Votto may be in left next year if Yonder Alonso continues to move through the system.

In a rare feat, Jake Peavy's average annual salary for his current contract ($14 million) was more than the entire starting 9 he lost to today($12.8 million). I think is actual 2009 number might have been lower, though. Also, Adam LaRoche ($7 million) outearned the other 8 starters on his team ($5.8 million). The game also featured a pair of brothers playing on both teams, 3 of the 4 had homers and 3 of the 4 had multi-hit games. There probably could have been a first in there somewhere had the 4th come through in both categories.

My decision to actually watch the Red Sox/Yankees game pays off, as Jacoby Ellsbury pulls off a straight steal of home.

Two quick minor league notes.

One, here's one for the books.

Brandon Snyder reaches on throwing error by third baseman Neil Sellers. Dave Krynzel scores. Melvin Dorta scores. Paco Figueroa to 2nd.

That's pretty simplistic. Bases loaded, no one out. What actually happened is that Sellers looked home, changed his mind and threw high to first. The first baseman (Brian Stavisky) jumped and snagged it, but the umpire called the runner safe. Krynzel scores. Stavisky argued the call, and ignored Melvin Dorta, who took advantage of the distraction to take home. Complete bonehead play.

Jake Arrieta looked great for Bowie though, striking out six and hitting 94 consistently on the stadium gun. Baltimore may have some promising young talent finally on the way up.

Two, Connecticut defeated Portland 20-15. You know your pitching let you down when you put up a ten run inning, and LOSE.

Disappointing to see the Yankees get swept. We should have won on Friday, had a 4-1 lead and a couple of chances to bust it open late. Saturday, I don't know, up 6-0, Girardi probably stayed with Burnett a little too long once he started getting hit, but the bullpen was taxed and it just got out of hand. Tonight the offense just fizzled.

Bruney out is a huge deal. He's been our best reliever besides Mo so far, lights out since the first game, and not having him out there has a trickle down effect on the rest of the bullpen, and our pen isn't good enough yet to make up for it. If Bruney is active he pitches in the 8th on Friday and we don't have to stretch Mo to 1+ innings. We probably win that game, and the bullpen situation which cost us the game on Saturday is entirely different.
