Thought it'd be interesting to see how varied each poster's taste is/maybe discover a few new songs. As much as I love stuff like Riot Grrrl, Goth, etc. they are pretty sparse in my ultimate favorite songs group. There's also dozens of other songs I love but wouldn't crack my list e.g. Oasis' "Wonderwall" amongst others.

I also noticed my songs tend to be pretty dark/depressing when looking a little deeper lyrically. Shouldn't surprise anybody how female-centric it is either. Trying to get to 20 was actually tougher than I expected as I tried to keep it to just one track per band otherwise I'd have included songs like Unfinished Thought's "Evening" amongst others.

Ordered by artist's last name.

Brassy "Work It Out"
The Breeders "Iris" (SNUB TV 1990 Live Performance Version)
Connie Dover "I Am Going to the West"
Epperley "Shy"
Evanescence "My Immortal"
Garbage "#1 Crush" (Nellee Hooper Remix Version)
Gorillaz "Dare"
Kidneythieves "Spank" (KMFDM Remix Version)
EDITED IN: Letters to Cleo "Dangerous Type"
Ministry "Stigmata"
Nirvana "Lounge Act"
Oasis "Roll With It"
The Offspring "Come Out and Play"
Beth Orton "She Cries Your Name"
Portishead "All Mine"
Shock Treatment OST "Looking For Trade"
Simon & Milo (aka Prozzak) "Get A Clue"
The Spice Girls "Love Thing" (Demo Version)
EDITED IN: Stereophonics "Mr. Writer"
Unfinished Thought "Through Crowded Rooms"
Veruca Salt "Shutterbug"
Within Temptation "Deceiver of Fools"

I like what I like man. I knew it was gonna get some weird looks. I've always been more drawn to depressing music idk. It said favorites. I'm not gonna play that stuff if I'm around people.

I'll add some Jimmy Buffett and party rock in the middle.

I can't believe all the variance on these lists. Mine would be almost entirely Beatles, Sleater-Kinney and Smiths songs!

edit: I made a quick list. In no order and in no way definitive, just off the top of my head, and still more than half songs by the above artists...

Ronettes - Be My Baby
Darlene Love - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
Madonna - Rescue Me
Trina - Da Baddest Bitch
Lil Kim - Queen Bitch
Smiths - Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
Smiths - Still Ill
Smiths - Rubber Ring
Morrissey - Jack The Ripper
Morrissey - Seasick, Yet Still Docked
Sleater-Kinney - The Ballad of a Ladyman
Sleater-Kinney - Was It A Lie?
Sleater-Kinney - The End of You
Le Tigre - I'm So Excited
Le Tigre - LT Tour Theme
Beatles - Run For Your Life
Beatles - Things We Said Today
Beatles - Something
Beatles - You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
The Cure - Boys Don't Cry

I actually made a conscious effort to avoid the Beatles because so much of that goes without saying to me. They feel like they should be a given in some form.

I can't believe I forgot "Be My Baby." I knew this would get me.

This question would have been a lot easier for me 10-15 years ago but I feel like my list would change weekly. There are still a definite 5-10 songs I'll always adore but don't know about 20. I'll think about it and see.

Yeah, I probably would choose even more Beatles songs if I thought about it more.

I also immediately regretted not working in “Give Me Back My Man” by B-52s so I feel you.

I ended up keeping it to one song per artist (except I had to have 2 Nirvana) because it ended up having way too much Johnny Cash, Nirvana and Kinks because that's the mood I'm in right now. My top songs fluctuate a lot but these songs are always in them or at least hold a special place for me:

Alice in Chains: Man In The Box
Ayumi Nakamura: KAZE NI NARE~
The Beatles: Helter Skelter
Black Sabbath: Paranoid (the first metal music video I ever saw!)
Foo Fighters: My Hero
Hieroglyphics: At The Helm
Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child
Johnny Cash: Hurt (I had like 10 Cash songs on here)
Kinks: What I Like About You
Metallica: One (the music video version with "Johnny Got His Gun" cut into it)
Nirvana: Lithium
Nirvana: Come As You Are
Pantera: Walk (POINTS)
Pixies: Gigantic
Queen: Another One Bites The Dust
Ramones: I Wanna Be Sedated
Refused: New Noise
Rolling Stones: Sympathy For The Devil
Veruca Salt: Volcano Girls
2Pac/Dre: California Love

I may have to sit down and figure this out. Really good topic but I love trash music more than anything so my list will probably be super embarrassing. Like, real trash as in I am more likely to listen to Lindsay Lohan "Rumors" than Stevie Nicks and I am okay with that.

Gonna try to do this in order and I know I'm gonna kill myself after the 7th song because I can't handle axing something above it...

EDIT: I made it 4 songs and FUCK ME this is so hard... My top 15 are all songs that I 99% can throw on any mix CD and not apologize for it. Also, this list did change ever so slightly from my OP.

#1: Shock Treatment OST - "Looking For Trade" = Jessica Harper + Black Dress + Those Vocals... *shrug* Just hits my heart.
#2: Kidneythieves - "Spank" (KMFDM Remix)
#3: Garbage - "#1 Crush" (Nellee Hooper Remix). I blame Harley Quinn. I listen to this song and I just see her character completely.
#4: The Offspring - "Come Out and Play"
#5: Unfinished Thought - "Through Crowded Rooms" = I strongly associate with the lyrics when it comes to crowds way too much.
#6: Letters To Cleo - "Dangerous Type" = I just think immediately of The Craft when I listen to this song and Fairuza Balk.
#7: Nirvana - "Lounge Act"
#8: Simon & Milo (aka Prozzak) "Get A Clue" = This song just makes me happy and I don't know why. Maybe it was seeing the video on Disney Channel back in the day.
#9: Brassy "Work It Out" = See the explanation for my 8 song.
#10: Stereophonics "Mr. Writer" = My go to college essay/paper song.
#11: Veruca Salt "Shutterbug"
#12: Unfinished Thought - "Evening" = Double dipping but I love this song too much. Just re-listened to it a few minutes ago and I swear it gave me a high better than chocolate & sex.
#13: Within Temptation "Deceiver of Fools" = IIRC I opt to chop off the opening minute+ slow shit and get right to the rock stuff to make it a 5:00ish slammer.
#14: Portishead "All Mine" = Something about stalker songs + women vocalists. I clearly got a type.
#15: Oasis "Hello"
#16: Beth Orton "She Cries Your Name"
#17: Alanis Morrissette "All I Really Want" = Best track on JLP. Literally was singing the lyrics to myself at work today... sign of a great song.
#18: Evanescence "Going Under" = I love "My Immortal" but this song is my go-to Evanescence track.
#19: Blacktape For A Blue Girl "Knock Three Times"
#20: Kristen Barry "Ordinary Life" = My favorite track off the Cruel Intentions Soundtrack. Just edging out Aimee Mann's "You Could Make A Killing"
