Kicking off the new-ish year as Ilya Kovalchuk is returning to the NHL (been gone since 2013) after signing a 3 year deal with the Kings.

Also a lot of intriguing Free Agents out there with FA set to open at the end of the week.

Re: The 2018-2019 NHL Thread

Very happy with the Red Wings' draft. Didn't try to outsmart themselves and took the best players available (and their first two picks could end up being steals). Seems like they're clearing up room on the blueline too so hope that means they're taking a shot at finally upgrading the D.

Tavares has meetings scheduled with the Leafs, Sharks, Stars, Bruins, Lightning and Isles. General consensus is he stays in Long Island. Will be curious how this shakes out.

- The Buffalo Sabres have acquired D Matt Hunwick from the Pittsburgh Penguins. He's never been more than a decent depth player but is 2 years removed from 18 assists in 72 games with Toronto after a down year with Pittsburgh last year.

The Leafs signed Tavares. Definitely the biggest free agent signing in franchise history, probably the biggest in Toronto since Roger Clemens.

Re: The 2018-2019 NHL Thread

Riley Nash signed a 3 year deal with Columbus. He provides some needed vet leadership and should be a quality 3rd Liner with potential to contribute on the 2nd Line if injuries hit.

Penguins signed D Jack Johnson to a 5 year deal. He's flashed offensively in past years and could really aid Pittsburgh's power play units too.

Bruins signed several players. D John Moore should be a potential 20-25 point guy while Chris Wagner fits as a prototypical 4th Line hitter. G Jaroslav Halak will backup Rask. Halak struggled mightily last year but at his peak he can put up a 2.20 - 2.40 GAA which would be fantastic if done for 15-20 games in Boston although Halak has a legitimate chance to get closer to the 2.20 level IMO.

I can't believe he left the Islanders after they decided to get a real GM and coach.

Re: The 2018-2019 NHL Thread

- The New York Islanders have signed Valtteri Filppula to a one-year contract. He's towards the tail end of his career but can chip in 30 points still and provides some depth scoring wise.
- The St. Louis Blues have acquired Ryan O'Reilly from the Buffalo Sabres. He's hit 20+ goals in 4 of the last 5 seasons and been on the cusp of 40 assists each year. Quality pickup who has a legitimate chance at flirting with 65-70 points next year.

Buffalo's return on the ROR trade:

BUF gets 1st in 19, 2nd in 21, Tage Thompson, Vladimir Sobotka,Patrick Betglund for Ryan O’Reilly. No salary retained. STL pays ROR signing bonus

Sounds like that 1st is conditional though, but I'm not sure what the conditions are.

Re: The 2018-2019 NHL Thread

The Detroit Red Wings have found out that Filip Zadina isn't eligible to play in the AHL next season. There's a widely held belief that Zadina could make the Red Wings roster at the start of the year but if he doesn't, he'll be returning to the QMJHL rather than trying his trade in the AHL.

Hopefully he plays well enough in camp to make the team. They're not a playoff team so he has every opportunity to do so.

Jan Kovar has signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the New York Islanders. Kovar has routinely hit 20-24 Goals a year in the KHL from 2013-2016 including 3 years of 68, 68, and 63 points.

Ray Emery died. He was a goalie for the Senators, Flyers, Ducks, and Hawks.
RIP.

- Elias Lindholm has signed a six-year, $29.1 million contract with the Calgary Flames. Elias has been with Carolina and has hit 39, 39, 45, and 44 points in the last 4 seasons and is just 23 years old. He's flashed potential to possibly hit the 20 Goal mark and has a chance to top out around 55-60 points if everything hits right offensively.

Also this is his last year on his contract. I heard one of the conditional picks is based on him resigning.

Re: The 2018-2019 NHL Thread

Not surprising news but Henrik Zetterberg is forced to retire due to back issues. Hard to top Yzerman as my favorite player of all time but he was close. He's a borderline HOF'er in my mind and 40 should be going up into the rafters at LCA eventually.

That's pretty much why I didn't think he was worth all that. If he had more years on the contract, it would've been worth it.

Then again, the Sens got probably the worst out of this. There had been much better offers earlier than this. So they really screwed the pooch on that.

Re: The 2018-2019 NHL Thread

Washington and Boston playing tonight, hell yeah!

Also we get to see how the subtle rule changes to the upper chest/shoulder/arm equipment of goalies goes and whether that has an early impact on goals. I read a stat where the Goals Per Game for both teams(?) was the highest since the 1995-1996 NHL Season or some such last year.

Tom Wilson got suspended for 20 games. Good but it will probably go down after appealing it.

I'm guessing if Betteman asks the Bruins to go to China again he will get thrown off the Zakim Bridge.

Re: The 2018-2019 NHL Thread

Actually, considering it was his 4th suspension in like 100 days, and 14-16 games from his last suspension. So Tom's probably not winning or having his appeal go down. I'd also wager the fact that he aimed for the head and hurt someone again will wager into no reduction.

Especially considering he just hurt a player yet again.

Toews had a hat trick last night. https://www.nhl.com/video/toews-fifth-career-hat-trick/t-277350912/c-61672403

Jason Spezza is just 10 points away from 900 for his NHL Career while Jonathan Quick is 7 wins shy of 300.

Re: The 2018-2019 NHL Thread

Bergeron just potted his 2nd goal of the 1st quarter. One thing I've noticed is that the slightly trimmed arms/shoulders has allowed for more "top shelf" space to score.

Fake Edit: Ottawa just hit post on a wide open top shelf shot.
