I think Elmo's dad is an aging hippy that was doing stuff after he saw how fucked Nam was and became all about peace and love in the 60's/70's. Which means that Elmo could be in his 40's/50's.

Now I am thinking of this as a dark retelling of that Brenden Fraser movie where his parents raised him in a bomb shelter and I kinda want to watch The Street due to this

2006 according to Muppet Wiki was Elmo's dad's first appearance on screen. He's only appeared on television recently, but I've seen him pop up in books I've read with my daughter.
