1991: Alt-Rock Cometh

1991 was not only the last gasp of the hair band era but it also marked the death knell of classic rock bands status as radio and MTV staples. To add a more somber endcap to this time period, Freddie Mercury would also pass away by the end of the year. A few bands would struggle on into the alt-rock era and a few non-alternative groups (namely Metallica and GNR) would remain arena headliners but the days of big hair and big riffs being at the forefront of the rapidly expanding genre of rock were essentially over.
