I know there’s a time when I’m going to want to see Louie again. I really didn’t think he’d surface for some time still.

How will they continue to show almost nothing but crime dramas? Who will think about Boomers looking for shitty shows to watch?

NOBODY. GETS. CANCELED. Ever. Haven't we figured this out by now? That's why all the claims that #MeToo is 'ruining men's lives/careers' are one hundred percent bullshit.

Maybe Spacey's? He's the only guy that really comes to mind, but then I'm sure it will be all "forgive and forget" ten years from now.

Ten? I give it two, at the outside. Although it would be entirely consistent with American culture if the only man to actually get canceled by #MeToo was gay.

Well weinstein is hopefully going to go to prison and I'm sure there are some men who have had their careers seriously impacted by metoo, I agree with waht I think is Slims point, that all of the whining about how MeToo (see Norm) is much harder on the accused and is ruining their lives is total bullshit.

Hey remember all those 70s and 80s films you loved like Animal House, Revenge of the Nerds, and Sixteen Candles? They all glamorized rape culture.

With Revenge of the Nerds it’s still up for debate between rape and sexy prank

What if you didn't like those and preferred The Naked Gun.

Well they did. Have you re-watched those movies man? It's pretty blatant.

I remember even as a teen the Revenge Of The Nerds sexy prank/rape stuff seemed weird and creepy. It probably would've been better if switched to being a drama for the end with a realization scene, followed by the haunting laugh of Lewis, then a fade to credits.

Oh no doubt. I'm just pointing out what's been making the rounds on social media. There are a lot more examples from the 80s that I can think of (90s too). I'm glad we're seeing a change now.

It’s really amazing how that scene got through like it was no big deal. Your hero of the movie. I know it was a different time and all. But rape through deception in your nerd comedy is a bit much.

they prob thought it wasn't true rape since it was oral? just taking a wild guess in how those in charge back then saw it.

Hell it's crazy what even more recent stuff like HIMYM was getting away with. Barney Stinson would def not go over well in 2018.

“NPH is gay, so it’s okay because we know the actor doesnt mean it” was an actual talking point by fans and critics to justify the character and his persona.

MASH is my favorite show, and I watch it almost every day. Hawkeye came across incredibly creepy most of the time. He tries to sleep with anything that moves.

It will never feel right to me to judge a lot of old movies (I'm talking 20 years or more, give or take) using modern standards. Of course many won't hold up or be fucked up or offensive through the eyes of modern society. Having watched Animal House and Fast Times At Ridgemont High not too long ago, it's absolutely insane those existed by current standards, but are such products of their time that it feels like wasted energy to worry about them in current context. The thoughts of promoting horrible things are 100% correct, but it doesn't feel like an argument worth starting because no shit.

Revenge of the Nerds is fucked up, though. That was gross and shouldn't have happened. I'd argue similarly the webcam stuff in American Pie. There are absolutely lines.

Yeah, I thought of that when I watched a rerun a few months ago. I think the rest of his friends laughing off his behavior is what makes it even more problematic. Compare Barney to a character like Dennis on Always Sunny where the rest of the cast is absolutely terrified by him and point out how fucked up he is all the time.

I've been watching Cheers and loving it, but my god is Sam Malone a total creep watching through today's eyes. Ted Danson is great on it, but yeah hopefully that type of never going to take no for an answer guy sitcom character dies out.

I was like 13 when I saw "Revenge of the Nerds", and even then I thought "holy shit, the protagonist is a rapist". I still love "Animal House" and "Sixteen Candles", but I totally agree with the sentiment about them.

Also RE HIMYM, it's worth noting that Ted has a bunch of cringeworthy moments as well when considering today's climate. This is all fresh for me as I've been doing a background re-watch of the show. I've always thought Ted was a piece of shit but it's even more amplified in 2018.

we almost need a thread about beloved sitcom "ladies men" that are like "oh fuck...no no no" now. Sam Malone as already mentioned is up there.

HIMYM dated itself incredibly fast that way. Ted telling his kids in detail how scummy he and Barney were makes it all the worse.

YNA talked Coupling a bit, and I gotta say "Patrick secretly records all the women he sleeps with and keeps the tapes in a closet" seems like it'd cause some problems today.

Nielsen squeezes a woman's breasts in at least 2 scenes. A monster.

Ha, your right. So, did any comedy from the 80's not have either sexual assault or characters casually dropping gay slurs? The latter always throws me off during The Monster Squad and Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure.

The webcam scene in American Pie would 100% be looked at differently today. A woman stripping not knowing that her entire town is watching her? Yeah, that raises some eyebrows in this day and age. I guess it's not seen as bad since they also show the guy prematurely ejaculating thus "getting his comeuppance".
