Hawk got me into Last Chance U on Netflix, a 6 ep series about East Mississippi Community College. It's basically Hard Knocks meets Hoop Dreams and is a fascinating look at the world of Junior Colleges, the players who transfer down to them (largely for academic reasons), and the academic advisor(s) that deal with those players knowing they want to go back to DI ball in a year or two. PRETTY GIRL WAGNER DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER!

The HC is a total dick at times and we (Hawk, AHM, and I) compared him to BUD KILMER from Varsity Blues. The QB who transferred from Florida State, John Franklin III (who will likely start for Auburn this season), came off as the ultimate prima donna highly hyped QB full of himself and all about himself. Yet he couldn't even beat out Wyatt who didn't even get to walk on at Mississippi State (they refused to even let him) because Franklin can't throw the ball accurately despite a cannon. JF3 = The athletic insanely fast QB with a cannon and shitty accuracy.

Also Clint Trickett, the QB from West Virginia who retired due to concussions, is an assistant coach there.

Finally, fuck that dude, Ronald Ollie. But just for SFH if he reads this post, Ollie and teammate Marcel Andry will be attending Nicholls State.

Re: Last Chance U on Netflix: Season 2 Now Up

Just finishing up Season 2. Thoughts

- Isaiah being so awful on ST falls on the HC. Buddy's an awful HC in terms of coachability. He clearly his hands on the O but doesn't give an ounce of shit about the D unless it's going wrong and even then, he just bitches at the DC to, "find something that works!"
- Kam Carter was Ollie 2.0, arguably worse because he came from Penn State and just has no ethic to balance his obvious talent.
-
PRETTY GIRL WAGNER IS GONE! About time 'cause she was right, the coaches seemed to fight her more than work with her and she was busting her ass for every single student-athlete on that football team.
- Was fascinating seeing the disparity of say EMCC and some schools like Coachula (sp?).

Ollie wound up doing pretty good for us last season. No word on his character.

Re: Last Chance U on Netflix: Season 2 Now Up

After how season two finished, I have no desire to see a third season.

Despite his constant claims of attempting to be a better person, Bud Kilmer Jr was actually more unbearable. The only coach that doesn't come off like a shithead was the OC.

The players as a whole must have been too boring or unwilling to participate because it seemed only 6 players were followed this time and none of them were that likeable except Dakota.

They kept talking about the first season which is probably realistic but it got annoying to hear it referenced so often. I liked the episode with the other school showing another light on how EMCC isn't remotely the last chance stop but rather the playground where the talented can hide from their trouble. This episode also painfully illustrates how important Miss Wagner is for those kids, most of whom are either so dumb they need hand holding or too entitled despite their shitty circumstances.

Also, thanks for not including the locals this season outside the obese fan at the dinner who kept screaming conspiracy theories about pollsters. He also supported Trump.

This season also takes place with the election in the background so at random times the viewer would have to be subject to political opinions from kids who can't remember what time their classes are without Miss Wagner physically escorting them to the class.

It was a good watch but it's time to leave Buddy Stephens and if they continue the series, move to a new school perhaps in a different part of the country. No shortage of dumb college kids out there.

http://deadspin.com/two-last-chance-u-players-charged-in-stabbing-death-1809940294

Isaiah Wright and Camion Patrick were arrested this week in connection with the death of Caleb Thomas Radford, who was stabbed to death on July 25 in Alcoa, Tennessee. Patrick was arrested in Bloomington, Indiana by IU campus police and will be extradited to Blount County soon, while his younger brother Wright was taken into custody in nearby Harriman. Two other men were arrested in connection with the case on August 3 and held on $1 million bail.

Wow.

Miss Wagner won't be happy. Also, stunned this is the first arrest (at least as far as I'm aware) of players or staff from the show since it's started.

I know I'm late to the party on this. I really liked the first season and couldn't even finish season 2. Why did Ms. Wagner leave? Was it made a big deal on the show?

You know Kansas is the land of Junior Colleges. Maybe they should hit up one of those schools? I know it was 10 years ago when I was there but I remember Hutchinson CC being pretty good.

She left to pursue a different career outside the restricted structure of an academic institution and started her own tutoring/mentorship program. It was a very big part of the season 2 finale as the players were not happy about her departure but it was clear the coaching staff didn’t approve of her popularity within the program and the show itself.

Well of course she was popular on the show. She seemed to be the one genuinely good person there, her job looked like a constant struggle that she wasn't really recognized for and she was like the only pretty woman in the county.

Re: Last Chance U on Netflix: Season 2 Now Up

EMCC went 10-1 and beat NW Mississippi CC 67-66 in 2 OT to win the MACJC Championship this year.

"The win also earns No. 1 East Mississippi an invitation to participate in next month's Mississippi Bowl and most likely a shot at playing for the school's fourth NJCAA championship in seven years. The Mississippi Bowl is slated for Sunday, Dec. 3 at May Memorial Stadium on the campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston."

Season 3 will start up on July 20th. There will be a recap episode for EMCC I believe and then a complete season of Independence CC.

Re: Last Chance U on Netflix: Season 2 Now Up

Really enjoyed Season 3 and found the HC a ton more likeable. Good to see a program that was really on the low end as far as facilities too. Also nice to see QBs be QBs in this series although nobody quite as memorable as Ronald Ollie but I found most of them to be pretty solid to follow, especially the Nevada lineman.

I quit on season 2 but I may have to jump into this one since it's a new team.

Season 4 trailer, which followed Independence CC again including now infamous HC Jason Brown. S4 drops on July 19th.

Finally binged the entire series this month. I'm pretty embarrassed that Nicholls actually signed Ollie based off of his behavior here, but allegedly he straightened out by his senior season before going to the Raiders.

And Jason Brown for the Independence seasons is a hot pile of human garbage. Almost every part with him was uncomfortable. Even the heartfelt parts felt insincere with how he was acting in the scenes prior.

Curious to see if they continue from here.

I'd prefer to see them tackle an area that isn't a real hot bed for football e.g. the Northeast or hook up with a bigger program ala Blinn College. Would be cool to also see a military program ala Georgia Military College get covered.

Heck they don't even have to do JUCO to have my attention now that I've watched. I'd pay attention to an NAIA program, lower end D3 or even a mid tier D2. Going to an FCS we've hosted all of those in "money games" and have gotten some ball games out of those teams and in our recent 0-12 season lost to D2 power Henderson State.

Gotta keep the spirit of "last chance" though, so I get it if they stick to JUCOs.

I'd like to see something on the Ivies, D3, and similar that don't offer athletic scholarships.

Damion Willis who appeared on the first season of Last Chance U was named starter for the Bengals this weekend and is to the best of my knowledge, the first cast member to make the NFL as a starter.

LCU jumped to the basketball floor this season to cover East LA College. As somebody who grew up playing basketball, I'm more invested in this than the past couple seasons of LCU. I like that the coach is super likable and the team itself seems fun to follow too with good personalities overall.

KJ's a beast and DeShaun's (?) the type of guy they profile that you can't help but root for to make it.

Another season is out and it's another basketball season. Hell yeah... one of my favorite sports docu-anything to ever come out.
