Looks like Cleveland AGM Carter Hawkins will be the new Cubs GM

White Sox are expected to exercise the $16 Million Option on Craig Kimbrel then try to deal him during the winter. Kimbrel is 28 saves shy of 400 for his MLB career.

Not good news for pitchers who didn't want to be rushed/baseball's efforts to try and speed up the game this year.

"The average was 3:10:07 for the 2021 regular season, the commissioner's office said after the regular season ended Sunday. That was up from 3:07:46 for the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and 3:05:35 in 2019.

"Take that away (extra 50 seconds of commercial time) from the 3:40 average length and that’s 3:26 — which is still 15 minutes more than the average length of a 2021 game."

Great article covering MLB's experimental rules in the minor leagues and the effects (positive & negative) they had.

"The AFL (Arizona Fall League) is using the ABS system (in games at Salt River Fields), the full shift restriction, the 15-second pitch clock, the pickoff-attempt limitation, and the 18-inch bases, which may hint at the rules that MLB considers keepers.

MLB wants to ensure that “the call that ABS is producing matches the representation of the pitch location on all our different platforms,” so that a strike on the field also looks like a strike on K-Zone and Gameday (and vice versa). For that reason, Sword says, “We’ve been prioritizing rectangular, two-dimensional zones as we work through this process.”

...a 15-second pitch clock (17 seconds with runners on base) in the Low-A West, a circuit composed mostly of teams from the former High-A California League. After the pitch clock started ticking on June 8, the league’s average time of game fell by roughly 20 minutes, from 178.2 minutes to 158.4.

Because the (step-off) rule wasn’t paired with a pitch clock, it also led to long delays as pitchers held the ball to try to disrupt runners’ timing, usually in vain. Although steals were much more common, Goldberg-Strassler says, “players were frustrated and the larger reaction from spectators was that games/pace was slower than it had ever been.”

Hopefully something is worked out during this to fix the lack of marketing and promotion of the players. When older baseball fans know nothing about Mike Trout, there is a problem.

Astros pitching coach Bert Strom isn't returning next year.
Dusty seems like he'll be gone as he and the GM haven't been on the same page for a while.
Correa is 99% off to bring in a massive bag of money NOT from the Astros.
Verlander and Greinke are both probably gone.

The Athletic is reporting that Buster Posey is announcing his retirement tomorrow.

Pretty crazy to go out on being Comeback Player of the Year (for 2nd game no less). Good for him.

Top five catchers by WAR who are not in the HOF (50%+ games at catcher)

1. Wally Schang (47.9)
2. Gene Tenace (46.8)
3. Thurman Munson (46.1)
4. Buster Posey (44.9)
5. Bill Freehan (44.8)

Posey won three world championships. Schang also won three, Tenace four and Munson two. There aren’t a lot of catchers with or below this group who are in. Roger Bresnahan, Ernie Lombardi, Rick Ferrell. I’m inclined to say yes for Posey but can you explain why Posey and not Thurman Munson?

Joe Mauer ended up with less than 50% of his games at catcher but he has 55.2 WAR, way above this cut.

Baseball Hall of Fame veterans committee ballots

The early baseball ballot omits Doc Adams, a Knickerbockers era pioneer who came close last time. This committee only meets every ten years so that‘s particularly jarring. Given that this committee includes negro league players they should assemble more. This group seems particularly suited to finally elect Buck O’Neil. I would vote Dahlen, Donaldson, Fowler, Johnson, O’Doul, Redding. I don’t think O’Neil is HOF caliber but I wouldn’t vote to keep him out either.

Golden Days group is Dick Allen, Minnie Minoso and maybe Ken Boyer. So one group covers pre-1950 players (about 110 years of history), the other covers twenty years of history. All of the Golden Days group got a look by the BBWAA, none of the negro league players did. It often feels like these selections are random, rather than any concerted effort to select the most deserving candidates.

Julio Lugo passed away, also 45 (serial pillist?!). Still in the Ray's top ten in bWAR and member of the 2007 Red Sox world championship team.

Robbie Ray, who just won the AL Cy Young, declined the Blue Jays qualifying offer and will be a FA.

Corbin Burnes beat out Zack Wheeler for the NL Cy Young with both players receiving 12 1st Place votes.

Sad to see Thor go. Jacob deGrom is the only one left from the "Five Aces" now.

Former relief pitcher Doug Jones has died at age 64. Jones was still closing games for the Brewers in the late 90s when he was in his early 40s
