EXCLUSIVE: Fox has closed a deal with The Fault In Our Stars director Josh Boone to co-write and direct The New Mutants, a standalone spinoff that expands its X-Men movie universe. The series, already part of the X-Men Comics universe, introduces a new crop of mutant characters born with special powers. Boone will co-write with Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg will produce with Lauren Shuler Donner.

It is not surprising that the studio would want Boone to grow into bigger things. He came out of nowhere to direct The Fault In Our Stars, an adaptation of the John Green novel The Fault In Our Stars. The book had a rabid youthful fan base, but Boone showed a strong feel in bringing youthful pathos to the screen, and while Shailene Woodley was already an emerging star, both Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff broke through as new stars on that film. The result was a $12 million budget Fox 2000 film that grossed $307 million worldwide. Boone became a hot director right away off that success, and among the projects he has been linked to are adaptations of the Stephen King novels The Stand and Lisey’s Story. He’s also been mentioned as one of the directors Marvel and Sony have been sweet on for the live action Spider-Man franchise reboot. Next up for him is The Vampire Chronicles at Universal, a reboot based on the Anne Rice novels that were turned into Interview With The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The Stand would go after, so The New Mutants is a couple years away.

Said Kinberg of the X-Men expansion with Boone: “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”

Fox has done well mining its X-Men franchise. Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool with Tim Miller directing, and Bryan Singer is directing X-Men: Apocalypse for 2016. James Mangold and Hugh Jackman are also doing another Wolverine installment with Hugh Jackman. Behind those is Gambit, a movie that has Channing Tatum attached to star. Those are the current X-Men priorities but it is proactive of Fox to keep new films in the pipeline and to re-engage Boone, who’s repped by CAA and attorney Gregory Slewett. Gwaltney is also CAA.

https://geektyrant.com/news/plot-details-revealed-for-the-new-mutants-film-which-will-be-full-fledged-horror

"Director Josh Boone is looking to do something extremely different in the X-Men universe with the New Mutants film that he's currently developing. He's planning on doing something that we've never seen before in the franchise, and as a horror fan, it sounds pretty exciting!

Boone recently talked to EW about some of his plans for the film and the direction that he's looking to take it. One of the first things he said was:

“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”
Whoa! That's definitely not the direction I was expecting the film to go, but it's certainly intriguing! This doesn't sound like an X-Men film at all, which might be refreshing. It's a group of X-Men characters that will apparently find themselves in a horrific situation.

Logan wasn't really a traditional style X-Men film or story either and that turned out to be great! It's awesome to hear that Boone is experimenting and trying something new with New Mutants. A source close to the production offered the following plot details:

"Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves."
Sounds intense! Boone goes on to talk about how the work that Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz did on the comic and how it inspired his vision of the film. He explains that the comic is "a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes."

So, that's what Boone is going for and it sounds like he could end up giving us something great! I like what I'm hearing from the filmmaker here and I'm excited to see how it turns out.

Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) has been cast in the role of Wolfsbane and Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) will play Magik. Sources close to the production tell the outlet that Henry Zaga from the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why is going to be cast in the role of Sunspot and that Rosario Dawson is currently in talks to join the film as well."

Went looking for this because I never saw updates. See the trailer never got posted when it came out last year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu9e410C__I

Went back for some heavy re-shoots as they are focusing more on the horror aspects after the success of It. They also are adding a character that was deemed too expensive originally in via reshoots. There had been confirmation that Jon Hamm filmed a post-credit scene as Mr. Sinister but that has been scrapped to debut a different, unannounced character. The actor was said some time back but just in case anyone may still be spoiled
Antonio Banderas
will appear as a different X-villain post-credits. So watch that original trailer but it is said maybe about half the movie has been re-shot.

Couldn't remember last time this thread got bumped and looks like it has been quite some time.

There's been a lot of speculation, especially with the Disney acquisition of Fox, if this gets sent to streaming instead of theatres or if it gets cancelled due to the unaddressed reshoot needs that have been rumored.

Hollywood Reporter reported today that Disney's presentation at CinemaCon revealed they still had this on the Fox/X-men release slate and while there weren't many details and the long term is to merge acquired properties into the MCU eventually, this film will get released at some point. The last update to the release date had been August 2nd, 2019.

April 3, 2020 is the newly announced theatrical date

Still signs of life, likely because the film is mostly ready. Other films planned before the merger like the Gambit film have been officially cancelled and off the slate now

This wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Not really good or anything but it's better than a number of movies in the X family (First wolverine movie for sure, X3, maybe others). I was also feeling generous since it was my first movie theater experience in 6 months. Didn't get super nitpicky about the total disregard for comic continuity (Roberto being a white Brazilian for no reason, ilyana being racist for no reason (attitude!~), etc)

Watched this tonight. This really felt like one of those movies that had a lot of pieces that could have made something decent or fun but instead it went half-executed and hastily executed.
