People are tackling each other in anger again so WHO YA GOT?
League MVP? Patrick Mahomes
Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year?
OROY = QB Trevor Lawrence. DROY = Micah Parsons.
What coach gets shitcanned midseason?
Vic Fangio in Denver as the team zips towards another disappointing 5-11/6-10 season.
Who suffers a devastating injury before Week 1 and makes all of this discussion moot?
QB Baker Mayfield in Cleveland

Patriots are already dealing with injuries putting TE Dalton Keene and LB Raekwon McMillan on IR. Both were expected to be valuable depth at key spots. I'm excited to see Mac Jones on Thursday night. The lower-end WR battle should be fun to watch with Wilkerson/Zuber/Gunner all trying to hang onto roster spots. Worth highlighting that Matthew Slater & Justin Bethel have taken CB Dee Virgin under their wing as a pet project and he could be an heir apparent as a future ST Captain.

MVP: Matthew Stafford, I'm going for a surprise winner.

OROY: Justin Fields
DROY: Micah Parsons (despite the next entry)

Shitcanned Coach: Mike McCarthy when he can't get anything done with a healthy team either.

Devastating Injury: Derrick Henry feels a pop in his leg during practice leading up to Week 1, just as we thought we were safe.

Saints CB Patrick Robinson announced his retirement after 11 seasons. Had seen his playing time decline since 2017 starting in just 5 games the last 3 seasons.

He led the team in interceptions his 2nd year I think. My social media was full of people bitching about wanting to cut him for giving up a TD. I'm like, "but he leads the team in INTs??!!!?"

Chiefs lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is out 4-6 weeks with a broken bone in his hand. KC plays Cleveland then Baltimore in its first two games so losing him + a new OL still finding consistency could see Mahomes feeling a lot of pressure like the Super Bowl.

Patriots cut RB Tyler Gaffney and are bringing back S Malik Gant, likely trying to beef up their ST units a bit. Cardinals continue to try & bolster their defense with pieces signing DT Jack Crawford while the 49ers signed DE Shilique Calhoun.

I agree with this a lot. A WC Round win before bowing out in the Divisional is in my head. Snuffing out the Xavien Howard issue before it was a problem is the sign of a good organization. He's worth it.

Quick thoughts on the Patriots...

#1: Cam was spotty in his accuracy but more willing to take the check down and live for the next down, which was progress.
#2: The running game is gonna be beastly again this year. Harris runs with such hard-nosed purpose, Michel is running like he's in competition for the #1 role, and White is White. Rhamondre Stevenson had a lot more wiggle and speed than I thought. He did look slimmer than he was at Oklahoma so I wonder if they asked him to lose some weight for speed purposes.
#3: Mac definitely had a factor about him. He needs to work on his arm strength in the gym (was short throwing some guys) but clearly has touch & accuracy when going deep. Not having DeVonta Smith/Jaylen Waddle type speedsters will take him getting used to though.
#4: Jakobi Meyers is gonna be our Troy Brown. Will never be an "elite" #1 WR talent-wise but he is just so consistent and such a good fit for the scheme.
#5: There were 4 false starts on the punt team. Not good. Also several big punt returns due to Bailey outkicking his coverage.
#6: Quinn Nordgrin looked legit and like he'll make it a battle for Folk's kicking job. Very impressed although he missed a PAT.
#7: WFT were making plays behind the LBs & in front of the Safeties passing-wise all game. Phillips/Dugger are very good talents but it'll be hard to replace Chung's presence on that backend.
#8: DL was inconsistent. They made some great plays to stuff the run and get off the field on 3rd Downs but generally seemed to be getting pushed around by Washington's OL more often than not. Not big plays given up but a lot of 3-5 yard runs play after play given up that would add up & extend drives in a real game.

Watching this fight as a fellow out of shape sports fan. Can you imagine blowing up after fighting in the nosebleeds and then having to walk down all of those stadium steps?

Some roster move catch up news...

Lions released LS Don Muhlbach and Saints signed WR Kevin White. Patriots TE room is quickly turning into no bodies left as Troy Fumagalli was injured/released leaving (I think) just Devin Asiasi as the lone healthy body right now.

49ers waived Josh Rosen after he complained about his lack of reps in camp. Eagles injured/waived Kerryon Johnson.

Giants traded CB Isaac Yiadom to the Packers for CB Josh Jackson. Dolphins acquired T Greg Little from Carolina for a conditional 2022 7th Round Pick. Little was the 37th pick in 2019 so he clearly has a lot of talent but also speaks to how quickly he fell on Carolina's depth chart.

I'm surprised Kevin White still gets picked up by teams.
I call it the Laquon Treadwell effect where he was drafted very high/had obvious talent and the GM/HC thinks they can make him a productive player several seasons into his career.

It is WEIRD hearing a British defensive line coach on Hard Knocks. So jarring. I can't wait to hear him if he yells and cusses anyone out.

Massive blow to the Jets as DE Carl Lawson is out for the season with a ruptured achilles. They also lost S Zane Lewis for the year.

Patriots Pre-Season Game 2 Thoughts

#1: Patriots DBs were on point in this game, constantly smothering receivers and making it tough for the Eagles QBs. LB Harvey Langi had a big performance as well nearly getting the 2nd INT later in the game and delivering some big hits.
#2: Cam was solid but still prone to holding onto the ball for too long allowing pressure to force him to move up in the pocket. He still struggles to progress through his reads fast enough despite this being his 2nd year in the system. Mac Jones definitely has the arm/touch to go deep but also made some rookie mistakes including not seeing a LB cut in who nearly picked him off and throwing short at the end of the 1st half when they had to try and kill the clock and set up a FG chance.
#3: Jakobi Meyers is still a stud and will be the #1 receiver IMO. The passing game will be dependent on the QB being able to get the ball to the receivers and I have more faith in Mac in the passing game than Cam. Bourne looks like he'll be a great intermediate route running fit, reminds me a lot of Chris Hogan and his ability to stretch the field across the middle from the slot area. Patriots love running those deep crossers off play action and Bourne could shine there.
#4: The running game is gonna be the high point for the offense again this season. One big positive is seeing the RBs getting more action on the receiving side, especially Sony Michel who made several good catch & runs during the game. I can see Stevenson locking up a spot on the 53 man roster and beating out Brandon Bolden but we'll see.
#5: Quinn was missing pretty badly to the right on 3 kicks. Not sure if it was a holder or kicker thing but it was worth highlighting. Patriots opted to work on a few 2 point conversions during the game too.

Falcons are fearing that backup QB A.J. McCarron is out for the year after a non-contact knee injury.
