Scatman John was a thing that was played in dance clubs in the '90s

People danced to a weird mustachioed middle aged man scatting about overcoming his stutter back in the '90s. What a time.

A friend and I were going to make a zero-budget indie flick back in high school that was clearly going to be awful. It was a total mishmash of Jawbreaker, Dazed and Confused, Clerks, and other 90s indie tropes. Emo and death metal soundtrack (legit emo, this was 2002ish), some classic rock, etc. The project broke down halfway through the writing stage because I insisted on "Scatman" playing during the opening credits as we introduce the cast at a party.

This song is 90s dance pop. Ski-ba-bop-ba-do-boop indeed.

I'm a fan of his stirring ballad, "Song of Scatland."

I've long felt Lana Del Rey's single "National Anthem" took a bit of inspiration from this track but I doubt she'll ever cop to it.

HOLLLEEEEEEEEEE SHIIIITTT! How had I never seen "Song of Scatland" before? I laughed so hard I'm pretty sure my girlfriend thought I was having a stroke.

That song and music video was also a clear influence on ICP's "Miracles"

Yeah I never seen it before either. I was dying laughing during this. This is even weird and cheesy by 90's standards.

Also video has strong shades of GNR's "Estranged" which also might explain why BUTT is so allured to it.

Scatman John is MY SHIT! I remember when he died in 99 and being sad I'd never get a chance to see him in concert.

Fucking LOVE this song.

Also, last summer Lou Bega dropped this. I wasn't a fan at first but I've warmed up to it, but had this happened in 99 I would have died of joy overload:

Look at these cool '90s Italian teens go wild for The Scatman!

I'm just realizing how much Scatman John reminds me of his high school gym teacher Mr. Koharian and dying LIRL. Mr. Koharian talked about singing doo wop music in the '50s so maybe he could throw down some scatting now that I think about it.

That YouTube wormhole led me to a Vice documentary on Eiffel 65's "Blue". Happy Birthday to me. What a quarantine birthday.
