The movie is supposed to be really good but I’m one of those millennials who was busy traveling and didn’t want to spend time in front of a screen. Isn’t that what he’s complaining about?

Also seems like Scott’s mindset is still years behind. Seems like he’s referring to those goddamn teenage brats, and calling them millennials.

He's also only made 2-3 movies worth watching, and two of them are sci-fi flicks from ~40 years ago.

He seems very egotistical for a guy riding his own laurels re: Alien. Scott's done some decent work such as Matchstick Men, American Gangster, Body of Lies (underrated), and The Martian but his movies often just aren't that interesting to go and purposefully seek out from a general broad audience perspective. He's directed some of my favorite movies (Thelma & Louise, GI Jane) but even those, the movies themselves aren't as action-heavy as I remembered them being upon re-watches.

Scott seems to think that movies should still be sold on 'Directed by, Starring ____, and old school dramatic trailer" ignoring the fact that his types of movies are largely in contrast to what people are looking for in movies today. This isn't the 70s or even 80s anymore. Even against directors of similar types of movies, theater-goers have more entertaining options e.g. Roland Emmerich for the big blockbuster action movie.

House of Gucci looks intriguing (and is based off a book) but I don't know how much broad appeal there is.

Also when The Last Duel opened, it was going up against: Halloween Kills, No Time to Die (2nd Week), Venom (3rd Week), Addams Family 2 (3rd Week), and Shang-Chi was in its 7th Week. Then Dune opened the next weekend. Realistically, I don't know what Scott was expecting or thinking that his 14th Century movie about a French Duel would be a big box office success against those types of specific genre/family appealing movies?

Always oddly enjoy seeing the random Anime movies make the list and make relatively a lot for such small screen showings.

Taking out numbers and lists during when covid was really bad, this is certainly an interesting top ten list of box office this week. A Fathom event clearing the top five (has that EVER happened) and also the number ten grab too with limited theaters got really great numbers. Seems like some niche stuff is really clicking in theaters right now. Also Dune still sticking around due to IMAX screens re-adding it this past week.

I was planning on seeing Wolf, but it probably wont be around much longer than this week at this rate

I think it's worth pointing out that Disney also released "The Last Duel" when "Halloween Kills" came out. Granted, that was never going to do much at the box office, but Disney now owns Fox, and they released "Nightmare Alley" the same week as the most anticipated movie of the year. I'm not blaming Marvel for this, and that one is a Sony release...but this to me feels like the problem with Disney owning Fox. Now, only something like "Free Guy" will get promotion and money, while smaller, more personal films get shafted, removed from their schedule or are pulled from theaters after a short time.

Say what you will about Scorsese's "theme park" movies comment, but he did have a great point-it now, more than ever, feels like directors actually wanting to make art in the current cinematic environment now feels harder to get made, and that's actually bad.

I'm seeing three Disney movies in the Top 10. Like, obviously, Spider-Man technically belongs to Sony, but we all know what time it is.

Spider-Man ended up notching $260.138 Million! 2nd Highest Opening Weekend ever I believe.

Nightmare Alley did a pretty solid $2.811 Million considering its theater count got slashed pretty hard. Opened in just 2,145 Theaters. For comparison, Ghostbusters: Afterlife was still in 3,282 Theaters for the weekend and that was going into its 5th Week.

Poor Nightmare Alley is going to get lost in a shuffle bigtime here.....really unfortunate they released in in the middle of all of these other tentpole releases. Matrix is out tomorrow as well as Sing 2, which will just make it harder to keep this film around. I'm hoping to see it on Friday but I fear it may really not be much around by then.

Resident Evil came and went far too quickly around here too FYI, never even got a chance to see that one either. I think it's hitting On Demand today actually or tomorrow.

This one really sucks. The original Nightmare Alley is one of my favorite noirs, and I was looking forward to this one. I'm a huge GDT fan, and this one looked great. I don't get a chance to get to the movies often, but I wanted to see this one on the big screen. Looks like I'll have to wait until it hits streaming. Luckily at this rate, it shouldn't be much of a wait.

I'm probably in the minority, but I actually think the latest RE movie is the best one. Granted, I'm not a gamer, so the only things I know are the character and monster names, that there's zombies and that the latest one had a tall vampire woman who made a bunch of people horny. That out of the way, I appreciate that the director actually seemed to be trying to make it feel like a horror movie for a change. As for why it came and went-well, RE: The Final Chapter underperformed, so my best guess is that Sony probably wants to be done with the franchise. Besides, I think Netflix is making a RE tv show, so continuing to make these movies likely feels pointless.

Nightmare Alley and Westside Story are two movies from acclaimed directors-both who have won best director and best picture, and with Del Toro not that long ago-yet I barely saw any promotion given to them, and releasing NA on the same day as the new Spiderman just feels like a studio (Disney) just sweeping it under the rug because 1.) they probably figure it wasn't going to make much cash anyways, and 2.) they are (or at least feel like) the one film studio that's most hostile to the idea of making actual movies. Them having such a monopoly is actually bad for those who like to watch movies-all kinds of movies-and not just things based on existing on well known IPs or franchises. There needs to be more than just Marvel, Star Wars and stuff like Free Guy* or whatever. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with watching these things, but even then it's hard to deny that Disney and properties like the MCU are having a negative impact.

*unrelated, but I did not care for that movie.

I'd argue the latter has actually led to more movies dropping onto Netflix/Prime that would normally have been low-budget Indie releases or had very limited theatrical runs anyway so I don't feel like it's too doom/gloom. Stuff like Moxie and Blood Red Sky being great examples.

Good movies still get great BITS scores (credit Dan Murrell) but I also think people are just generally pickier about movies and this year's slate has not been that good. Most of the con-current HBO Max releases were solid movies but none that I was like, "Damn. I really wish I had seen that one in theaters instead," (The Suicide Squad maybe being that lone exception).

Out of the 23 movies I've seen of this year's slate, only 3 got an 8: Spider-Man: No Way Home, Last Night in Soho (which I feel I'm likely the minority there), and The Suicide Squad. I still need to see stuff like Antlers and Nightmare Alley.
