Notes on drafting and scoring

1. When drafting players, please include things like career highlights, pics, film, reasoning, etc. Most of the fun here is to read about the all-time greats.

2. At the end of the draft, I will randomly seed these teams and hold a single-elimination tournament where we will all vote for the winners, with the exception of voting for your own team. When we get down to tournament time, feel free to use your own system of judging the teams against one another. Last year, I voted based on peak performance. I'm sure some of you will consider full body of work to be more important, or mechanics, and I'm certain HarleyQuinn is going to be analyzing these guys statistically. Basically, be sensible, and please be consistent.

3. When it's your time to pick, you get to pick regardless if prior participants have picked or not. That's what keeps this format moving.

4. We'll be selecting 11 offensive and 11 defensive starters, as well as a Punter, Kicker, and return man, as well as a coach.

5. Regarding players that played multiple positions: You can certainly have Deion Sanders be your starting CB and return man. Feel free to use that "return man roster spot" on something like a special teams gunner, 3rd down back, etc. Be creative. HOWEVER, say you choose an old-timey 2 way lineman; when it comes down to judgment time, fatigue is fair game in terms of estimating whether that player will wear down and hurt their performance. Draft wisely.

Jerry Rice WR San Francisco 49ers

-22,895 receiving yards
-197 touchdown receptions
-3x Super Bowl champ

I picked Jerry Rice because I wanted a player who was the best at his position, who was durable, and would be a leader on and off the field.

Dude, you just failed the concept of this draft. You don't draft until midnight Eastern time, although I guess it doesn't matter if you're technically the first, right?

I just asked Ob about this in a pm, I really should've made it here it seems.

Should you not make it for your time for whatever reason, you can always get someone to sit in (Ob can confirm this if he wants to). Just so long as you trust the person to draft the guy who you want, and not screw you over and take them themselves.

And if you can't make it to your time on your very first pick, what the hell are you thinking?

So, last year I made it to the finals with a heck of a good offense, a great coach, and a killer secondary. Ultimately, the lack of depth in the trenches caught up with me and I wasn't able to win big because of it. This year, I'm changing that strategy entirely and, even though I think there might be better players available, there was no better guy at his position or for what I need than:

white_03.jpg

DE Reggie White
13× Pro Bowl selection (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998)
10× First-Team All-Pro selection (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1998)
3× Second-Team All-Pro selection (1994, 1996, 1997)
1× All-USFL (1985)
Super Bowl champion (XXXI)
2× NFL Defensive Player of the Year (1987, 1998)
3× UPI NFC Defensive Player of the Year (1987, 1991, 1995)
1986 Pro Bowl MVP
1985 USFL Man of the Year
NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team
NFL 1990s All-Decade Team
NFL 1980s All-Decade Team
USFL All-Time Team
Philadelphia Eagles #92 retired
Green Bay Packers #92 retired
Philadelphia Eagles Honor Roll
Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame

That's a hell of a list of accomplishments, top to bottom, and exactly the guy I want anchoring and leading my defense, no matter what shape it may take.

Although he retired early, in my opinion, this guy is the greatest running back of all-time. He's one of the reasons why I became a football fan.

QB Peyton Manning

He was the first QB taken last year, and here he is again, since my top two choices were already taken (Rice and Munoz, in that order)

Last year, my team ate shit during playoff time because I got waaaaay too cute with my offense. Not this time.

I've seen nearly every pro game this guy has played (he hasn't missed a start), and he's the best QB I've ever seen play the game. Barring injury, Manning will most likely own every statistical record in the NFL, and he defines leadership on the field. He has a Superbowl win, too, in a playoff where no one gave them a chance.

Career Highlights said:
9× Pro Bowl selection (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)
4× First-team All-Pro selection (2003, 2004, 2005, 2008)
3× Second-team All-Pro selection(1999, 2000, 2006)
3× AP NFL MVP (2003, 2004, 2008)
Indianapolis Colts All-time leader (Passing Touchdowns and Passing Yards)
Pro Bowl MVP (2005)
Super Bowl MVP (XLI)

Career Stats said:
Pass attempts 5,960
Pass completions 3,839
Percentage 64.4
TD-INT 333-165

I'm writing this up as Agent speaks so if he picks this guy I'm going to cry. This guy is probably not only the best running back of all time, but he may be the best player of all time. He led the league in rushing EIGHT years, he had 1863 rushing yards in a 14 game season! Dude was a beast, 6'2, 230 pounds of mayhem, skill and unstoppability. My pick is:

jimbrownah9.jpg

Jim Brown.

3 Time MVP
3 Time Pro Bowl MVP
9 Time Pro Bowler
8 Time First Team All-Pro

I like the Reggie White pick...I was hoping first round everyone would focus on offense so he'd fall to me in the 2nd but c'est la vie

Anyone else thought about what kind of offense/defense they're playing? I'm going with the 3-4 on defense

I usually wait until I'm a couple rounds in before deciding what defense I'm going with, since I'd hate to start building a killer 3-4 and then realize that there's more good d-linemen available than good linebacking.

I'm definitely targeting a 3-4 on defense as I did last draft. I may end up converting some undersized DE to rush LB if given the opportunity.

I'm not sure what defense I'm using. Last time, I basically used the 70's Steel Curtain and drafted a bunch of guys from that group. This year, despite Lambert, I'm going a different direction.

My defense is going to look way different than the QB killing machine I made last year. Of course, I'm actually going to have a WR on my roster this year, too, so it might be a little more balanced.

10 picks so far and I'm the only one who went QB. Weird.

My defense is going to look way different than the QB killing machine I made last year. Of course, I'm actually going to have a WR on my roster this year, too, so it might be a little more balanced.

10 picks so far and I'm the only one who went QB. Weird.

It may just be me, but I think the amount of "great" or "HoF" qbs is greater than RB,DE, etc.

But yeah, I figured there'd be a run of QBs in the first round, the variety of players chosen is fun

I honestly don't think there's enough of a quality difference between guys like Marino, Montana, Manning, Brady, Elway etc. to grab a QB in round 1.
