Nah, I'd argue he was close enough. When asked after that game why he didn't have a clear policy for who takes over when he gets ejected, as opposed to the job going to the person who was, ostensibly, his top assistant, Pop actually replied, "I don't care about making history." I don't necessarily believe that Pop had some sort of "anti-SJW" motive behind saying it, like Roy is implying, but he pretty clearly seemed to be sending the message that he was never actually seriously considering Becky for that job.

I mean, it was pretty groundbreaking for the Spurs to hire Becky in the first place, so they're probably always going to be able to dine out on the "credit" they get from that, but ever since Becky has earned her way to the second chair, Pop has seemed to want to make it a point that he only considers her to be good enough to be in the seat next to the big seat. This is at least twice since Becky ostensibly became the lead assistant that Pop has publicly undermined her coaching, vis-à-vis her role in the chain of command. And it may have even happened before, but it's definitely gotten more blatant, since Duncan joined the staff.

To be fair, my version was a lot closer to what Pop actually said than Roy's version. I'm inclined to think that Roy was doing some mad editorializing but, who knows? Maybe Pop has really been some kind of undercover sleeper cell anti-SJW, this whole time.

I think it's as simple as, it's been decided, from the top down, that Duncan was the heir apparent. The only thing that would have kept him from succeeding Pop was him turning down the job. And, as someone mentioned on a different message board, it's "freaking Tim Duncan," so of course the job was his. But let's call a thing a thing: if the roles were reversed, the hot takes would be flying, left, right and center, and the fifth word of every other sentence would have been "merit."
