I don't think it's noted enough that Vince didn't know how to book heels either. Yokozuna's World Title run was hurt by him suddenly becoming a chickenshit. Dude is an agile 450-500 pound dude, just have him wreck motherhuggers. Not win by the skin of his teeth like Ric Flair.
As bad as the babyface side was in the New Gen era, the heels were even worse.
I feel like Yokozuna isn't mentioned enough when it comes to dredging up WWF's racist bullshit. I mean besides the obvious them building him as a Japanese dude when he's Samoan. He was perfectly capable of cutting his own promos and probably could have been very solid if he had someone to give him direction. Instead they stick him with the worst manager in WWF history, promo-wise cause we're supposed to think he's Japanese, I guess. He also should have done his own promos.
That’s a subtle distinction that probably flew right over the head of most of the audience in WWE’s target demo at that point, if we’re being honest. These were fans who were chanting “USA!” to support Bret Hart at WrestleMania 9.I want to reiterate what Vale was hinting at in that Yoko was never actually portrayed as Japanese or billed from Japan. He was billed as representing Japan because that's where sumo originated from and is where his manager, Mr. Fuji, was from. He was always portrayed as a Samoan who had ties to Japanese sumo.
I asked my brother and he said something like the same island as the Headshrinkers so he was just a Samoan sumo. The video games for sure listed Polynesia.Yoko was billed as hailing “from the Polynesian islands” but as a kid I didn’t know where that was and I lacked the intellectual curiosity to find out. I just assume they were near Japan.
Is there a point where we can note Mr. Fuji himself was actually Hawaiian?I feel like Yokozuna isn't mentioned enough when it comes to dredging up WWF's racist bullshit.
