AL Pitchers

Zack Greinke
Roy Halladay
Justin Verlander
Tim Wakefield
Mark Buehrle
Jonathan Papelbon
Joe Nathan
Mariano Rivera
Brian Fuentes
Andrew Bailey
Felix Hernandez
Josh Beckett
Edwin Jackson

Wakefield is an example of overrating win/loss record. Looks like a lifetime achievement selection. Bailey is the A's selection in case you were wondering who the hell he is.

AL Reserves

Adam Jones
Kevin Youkilis
Victor Martinez
Curtis Granderson
Torii Hunter
Justin Morneau
Jason Bartlett
Carl Crawford
Ben Zobrist
Michael Young
Aaron Hill

Granderson is a surprise as is Ian Kinsler being left off the team, although his numbers have dipped quite a bit of late.

Gallardo and Hoffman deserved it. Mike Cameron could've replaced Beltran had he not fallen off for a month.

The NL team completely lacks a CF if Beltran can't play.

He's definitely not going to play so one would assume that they'll pick a true center fielder to take his spot on the roster. Although I don't know if they'd stick that player in the starting line up after not being selected the original roster. Hunter Pence is the only one among the original reserve selections with any real experience in center. Having Kemp or Victorino voted in on the final ballot would help.

And here's the breakdown on who was voted in by the players and then who the managers added.

American League pitchers who have earned All-Star honors stemming from the Player Ballot include starters Josh Beckett of the Boston Red Sox; Zack Greinke of the Kansas City Royals; Roy Halladay of the Blue Jays; and Tigers teammates Edwin Jackson and Justin Verlander.

The All-Star relievers via the Player Ballot are Joe Nathan of the Twins, Jonathan Papelbon of the Red Sox and Mariano Rivera of the New York Yankees.

Maddon had eight slots to fill out the remainder of the A.L. roster. The five pitchers he chose included starters Mark Buehrle of the Chicago White Sox, Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners and Tim Wakefield of the Red Sox and relievers Andrew Bailey of the Oakland Athletics and Brian Fuentes of the Angels. The position players chosen by the manager were outfielder Adam Jones of the Baltimore Orioles, first baseman Kevin Youkilis of the Red Sox and infielder Ben Zobrist of the Rays.

...

National League position players who are invited to the 80th All-Star Game as a result of Player Balloting are catcher Brian McCann of the Atlanta Braves; first baseman Adrian Gonzalez of the San Diego Padres; second baseman Orlando Hudson of the Los Angeles Dodgers; shortstop Miguel Tejada of the Houston Astros; third baseman Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals; and outfielders Brad Hawpe of the Colorado Rockies, Hunter Pence of the Astros and Justin Upton of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The relievers whose All-Star berths stem from the Player Ballot are Heath Bell of the Padres, Jonathan Broxton of the Dodgers and Francisco Rodriguez of the Mets.

Manuel’s eight selections included three position players: first basemen Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers and Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies as well as Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Freddy Sanchez. Rounding out Manuel’s pitching staff will be starters Dan Haren of the D-backs, Ted Lilly of the Chicago Cubs and Jason Marquis of the Colorado Rockies and relievers Francisco Cordero of the Cincinnati Reds and Ryan Franklin of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Yeah, Granderson was defintiely a surprise there. I would've rather seen Inge or Cabrera make it as the 3rd Tiger, but at least Inge is on the fan ballot (not that he has any chance of getting voted in).

Took a look at win shares, Granderson actually leads the Tigers (miniscule edge over Inge). Not having a great season, but a very good defensive center fielder with an .808 OPS isn't terribly out of place.

I'm actually surprised that Hanley Ramirez gets the popular support to be a starter. I always kinda figured no Marlin would ever get voted in.

Even when Miguel Cabrera was one of the best hitters in the NL, he always had to make the team as a reserve.

Yesterday's Brewer effort seems to have been a complete fluke rather than a harbinger of a team finally putting it all back together.

Jonathan Broxton totally blows an awesome 8 inning gem by Chad Billingsley. Allows 4 walks and 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th, and shows the world why he should an All Star. Dodgers still win in 13, and avoids a demoralizing loss to the Padres.
