I still play that game at times. It was one of the best classic 16 bit RPGs, bar none. Top five at the very least. I liked FFII (III?) for the class changing aspect, but Lufia II took Lufia I and made it better by an order of magnitude. The story was good, it had the right mix of puzzles and combat, strategy within combat was good. I just wish it had been longer.

Speaking of that, why doesn't a studio make a halfway decent RPG that is long on play and story and merely decent on the bells and whistles? I mean I know the answer, I just wish that a studio or two had the balls to do it.

Like Blue Dragon and everything on DS?

Oh please. I know the DS is popular, but I have always believed that system is one huge gimmick, despite how many units were sold. I meant the current generation of systems.

Speaking of that, how long until the next generation starts being leaked out? Where do they go, with XBox360 and PS3 being almost complete media centers and not just game consoles?

It's a damn good gimmick. And that doesn't really have anything to do with RPGs, anyway, as having two screens doesn't really detract from anything. The DS is underrated as far as all-time great systems for RPGs go.

You got tons of remakes, the Etrian Odysseys, Dragon Quest 9 is coming, as is Nostalgia, Knights in the Knightmare may be gimmicky, but apparently really good, plus a bitchload of Japan-only games that are worth your time if you don't mind using a patch or translation guide or whatever. Soma Bringer is supposed to be excellent, and Tales of Innocence, which I started a few days ago, is one of the highlights of the series.

The DS was a gimmick system for the first 6-9 months when 90% of the games available were gimmicky games that just had you finding things to do with the touch screen instead of playing an actual game. But outside of that it certainly is not a gimmick, it's got a massive library of good, deep games, RPGs included. Many of which ignore the touchscreen completely outside of being able to touch menu choices if you so choose.

Hmm... Maybe I should take a second look, but when all I see are games that are reviewed that utilize the touch screen in some wacky way, I tend to keep away from the DS.

DS is awesome and pretty clever at times for what it can do with its features, don't dismiss it due to its gimmicks, there's some real good games out there. Ask Luke-O and he'll give you the low down on Phoenix Wright (probably has some porn of it too).

Actually outside of Magical Starsign I can't think of any RPGs on DS that require you to use the stylus.

Fuckin' "The World Ends With You" which could easily have made its way onto my list. God damn is the combat fun and mind-bogglingly fast in that game. The story is just OK, the graphics and music are great, but wow, that fighting system... one of the best ever IMHO.

You use the stylus to control a character on the bottom screen, while you use the D-pas or buttons (if you're a lefty like me) to control the character on the top screen. You have to pay attention to both, really, and you really can't just mash buttons. Also, the number of stylus-activated attacks available is legion.

Ah, yeah. Note I find that game to be overrated as hell. A fucking nightmare to control.

You don't have to control the top screen in TWEWY (fuck if I'm typing it out), but the game is way easier if you can master it.
