I've seen almost all of those, and would slice about two dozen off the list as "not at all essential." And add Saw VI. It's about healthcare!

Re: TRTSM Presents - Our Definitive Horror Movie Thread

You've seriously seen almost all of them? I would never have pegged you as a high-volume horror guy. That list is fucking long.

Can you recommend something from there? A horror movie that I really like for reference is Deep Red. Hey, maybe that should be added!

Compiling this list, I had forgotten how solid a film Mute Witness was. I saw it on IFC a couple years ago after looking it up on IMDB to see how it was rated when the description intrigued me. It's a good little tension thriller and worth checking out if it's on.

I count 16 I haven't seen, so yeah, almost all of them. I'd recommend any other Argento, especially Suspiria. Definitely Black Christmas. And if you've never seen The Wicker Man, it's one of the few that exceeds Argento for flat-out "oh man this is ridiculous and nuts."

And I was totally joking about Saw VI, Harley. You should probably take that off and put up The House of the Devil instead.

I've never seen Deep Red, but that's on my halloween viewing queue next week

Black Swan

This is considered a horror movie? I'll check it out regardless as well as the other Argento stuff and Wicker Man.

Report your findings on Deep Red, Dead Roy. I haven't seen it in awhile, but I remember liking it a lot. One of my favourite scores, and some great cinematography. The killing scenes are p. epic as well.

I'd definitely consider Black Swan a horror movie. It's quite terrifying if you let yourself really delve into it.

My recs follow, and I've broken them down by sub-genre. Some are really great must-sees, some are just b-movie schlock that you should see either for fun or to see how a movie shouldn't be made.

No rule saying horror has to have crazed killers or supernatural elements.

It's actually AKA Zombi 2. Dawn of the Dead (original) was released as Zombi in Italy.

100% true.

Also, we should probably add the original version of The Crazies (from 1973, directed by George Romerio) to the list. I'll say that the remake is better, but there's elements of the original that I really wish they kept for the remake, particularly the ending.

Black Swan is more of a Thriller than a Horror. I always feel like that line gets blurred a lot, but what can ya do..

Glad to see Session 9 is already on the list. It's another one that blurs that line but it's a great movie regardless. I'll go through my DVD/BRDs later tonight and add a few more to the list.

Re: TRTSM Presents - Our Definitive Horror Movie Thread

Joseph Lee of 411mania (he writes A Bloody Good Time, focusing on all things horror each week) made a great point about "thrillers": most of them are horror movies that would like to be Oscar-bait, so they call themselves "thrillers" instead.

Re: TRTSM Presents - Our Definitive Horror Movie Thread

Indeed, I actually sometimes prefer movies that lean more towards the thriller side (see Black Swan, Mute Witness, etc.) as opposed to the strictly supernatural side.

I updated the list a bit and included a movie I have a soft spot for in Alligator. Don't be afraid to throw out movies that are merely solid or 'only' okay either. Almost everybody knows the classics and I love lists like what we have now where I haven't heard or seen a decent amount of the movies listed. There have been times I've literally DVR'd a movie simply because a TRTSM poster said it was worth watching or recommended it (Pontypool being an example).

Re: TRTSM Presents - Our Definitive Horror Movie Thread

Wasn't sure about Pontypool at first but I actually kinda liked it in the end. It was especially weird to hear them calling out locations that I know or have been to as being under attack, lol.

Couple more...
La Horde (2009, directed by Benjamin Rocher & Yannick Dahan, France)
The Dead (2010, directed by Howard J. Ford & Jonathan Ford, United Kingdom)
Bride of Re-Animator (1990, directed by Brian Yunza)

I was serious about Dagon (2001, directed by Stuard Gordon). It may be a deviation from The Shadow over Innsmouth but it's still a good creepy/small town monster movie.

Slashers (2001) - Directed by Maurice Devereaux
Kolobos (1999) - Directed by Daniel Liatowitsch and David Todd Ocvirk
Hellraiser: Inferno (2000) - Directed by Scott Derickson (the best sequel after part 2, IMO)

I've been saying this for years. Silence of the Lambs is a horror movie, but don't tell that to Hollywood. I'm surprised The Exorcist isn't listed as thriller most of the time.

And I'd add Maniac and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer to the list.
