General Rules Re: Keepers
- After 3 consecutive years of keeping a player, they "age" up a round in value.
- No limit to keeping FA pickups.  If you want to keep 6 guys picked up as FAs, go ahead.
- Round 20 is the default round for a FA who is kept.  If you keep 2 FAs, they will be listed as R20 and R19.  If you keep 3, it goes R20, R19, and R18.  So on and so forth.
- If you acquire a player in a trade with a specific round value of a player you already own, said acquired player will drop a round.  Another conflict will then bump that player down. Example: You acquire QB Jay Cutler who is Round 1.  You have QB Aaron Rodgers as Round 1 and TE Jason Witten as a Round 2.  Jay Cutler will get bumped down to Round 2 and Jason Witten gets bumped down to Round 3.

Rule Changes for 2011 Season
3 WR/TE Spots (down from 4 last season)
Playoff Expansion - 6 Teams out of 20 Total.  Division Runner + Division Runner Up (e.g. Top 2 teams in each division)
1/25 Return Yards Scoring
Blind Waiver Wire Bidding with $100 Budget
3 Divisions: SWAG (Top Tier), BIG DICK (Middle), and DAWG (Bottom Tier).  Teams can move up/move down between divisions based on end of year finishes. Explained more thoroughly here, re: the schedule-
1. No team will play another more than once. (except, see rule 3)
2. Every team must play all divisional opponents at least once.
3. I've tried to minimize the amount of games between the SWAG and DAWG divisions as much as possible and while I still have a couple kinks to work out on that end, it's been pretty difficult. One thing you have to remember is that the SWAG division only has six teams and with 13 games, that means each team would have 8 games out of division there whereas everyone else only has 7, and obviously these are the best teams from last year so it places the rest of the league in a tough spot. Because of this, the SWAG division will play 2 games against each team in their division, and 3 games outside of their division at random (or in a couple cases, not so random). This needed to be done in order to keep that competitive balance I was talking about in that other post and give the SWAG some additional SWAGGER.
4. In the future for the league, the placing for each division will be like this:
SWAG: All 6 playoff participants
BIG DICK: Consolation Bracket Champ, Bottom 4 from the SWAG division, Next 3 based on record
DAWG: Expansion teams and the rest on record.
This year it didn't get quite laid out like that because since it's our first year doing it, and we had the rare event of an expansion team that was actually decent being left behind so it was done strictly based on record, using our draft order.

This means that:
- If you're in the bottom division, you can earn a trip to the top with a playoff spot
- Earning a postseason spot essentially means playing a year-long postseason since the SWAG division's dick too strong to bite off
- Defending a championship is going to be tougher and be that much more worth it if you can do it. Finishing third in the SWAG is a bittersweet accomplishment.

DRAFT NOTES
- PM the person after your pick, please!  This makes the draft flow quicker/smoother so because some of us live in different time zones, this'll help.
- Every round will have a 12 Hour Window between picks.  If you cannot make your pick in that time or know you'll be away for a while, PM your selection(s) to somebody that will be around and you trust.
- Either I or VX or somebody will try to keep the list updated constantly to reflect the picks.  USE the find feature to make sure you are not selecting a player already taken.  Make sure you've spelt the name correctly as well.  Looking up "Malcolm Floyd" is far different than looking up the WR Malcom Floyd with no l.
- If you decide to select a player and change your mind... change the name BEFORE you post.  If you edit the post afterwards to change a selection (unless you took a guy already selected), you could be booted out of the league.  Once you post your pick, that's final.
- Players who are selected in the draft will be listed to the right of the team name in the below draft order.  Either I, VX, 909, or somebody will try to keep this updated ASAP in regards to picks made.

Surprised that they're doing this. Maybe Yahoo is clairvoyant enough to figure the lockout isn't going to go on much longer (there may be a court ruling tomorrow about it, as a matter of fact). Either way, we started draft last year around 4th of July weekend or so. I'll push beginning of draft to a week earlier to make it easier on everyone this time as well.

Updated the first post to also include both league scoring and roster requirements based off last year and updated where appropriate (e.g. the 3 starting WR/TE spots for the 2011 Season).

Nice to see that list. I'd like to add that there's been a new stat included into this season for defensive players. Tackle For Loss has now been added to Yahoo's stats (not our league, but Yahoo)

For offense, +40 passes, runs, and receptions have been added as a stat too.

I dig it. Edwin was on the reserve list for last year. I believe MFer87 was interested at some point as well, maybe he could fill the third spot.

Tested out last year's league settings with return yards (since it was brought up by VX and briefly talked about).

Test 1: 25/1 Point.  Bonus at 100 (3), 125 (1), and 150 (1). Players who only return are a little too dominant.
- RB Darren Sproles jumps to RB16
- RB Mike Goodson jumps to RB23
- RB LaRod Stephens-Howling jumps to RB28 [224 total yards offensively]
- RB Leon Washington jumps to RB34 [179 total yards offensively]
- RB C.J. Spiller jumps to RB35
- WR Percy Harvin jumps to WR8
- WR Danny Amendola jumps to WR9
- WR Jacoby Ford jumps to WR22
- DB Danieal Manning jumps to DB20
- DB Tramon Williams jumps to DB22

Test 2: 30/1 Point.  No Bonuses. Much better.  Players who only return are roughly Top 50.
- RB Darren Sproles falls to RB24
- RB Mike Goodson falls to RB26
- RB LaRod Stephens-Howling falls to RB44
- RB C.J. Spiller falls to RB46
- RB Leon Washington falls to RB47
- WR Percy Harvin falls to WR10
- WR Danny Amendola falls to WR21
- WR Jacoby Ford falls to WR29
- DB Tramon Williams falls to DB25
- DB Danieal Manning falls to DB37

Test 3: 40/1 Point.  No Bonuses.
- RB Darren Sproles falls to RB26
- RB Mike Goodson falls to RB31
- RB C.J. Spiller falls to RB49
- RB LaRod Stephens-Howling falls to RB50
- RB Leon Washington falls to RB52
- WR Percy Harvin falls to WR12
- WR Danny Amendola falls to WR23
- WR Jacoby Ford falls to WR37
*Note: WR Devin Hester finishes at WR48
- DB Tramon Williams falls to DB27
- DB Danieal Manning falls to DB45

Overall Thoughts: If we are to include return yards, I think it would be best to make it 1 point per 40 yards (the equivalent of a little under 2 kick returns or 4-5 punt returns).  I think bonuses would push players much higher than deserved whereas at 40 per 1 point, a guy like Stephens-Howling could be a Top 50 RB while helping as a bye week fill-in, despite largely being a returner only.

Guys like Harvin, Hester, etc. would get boosts due to their return abilities but not so much that they leapfrog many better FF players at their position.  Under the 40/1 inclusion, guys can jump as many as 15-30 spots depending on where they ranked last year vs where they would have (see RB Steve Slaton as a prime example who would have gone from RB112 to RB83, e.g. a potential bye week filler RB as opposed to free agent fodder).

In the other TSM league, we used 20 yards/point with no bonuses.  Amendola & Stephens-Howling became starters for me virtually every week.

My only concern with the yards being that low is that it becomes more opportunity over actual talent (and effective talent that matters).

Example A [1/20 Scoring]: Player X gets 4 kick returns for 94 yards and 2 punt returns for 10 yards.  Total: 104 yards for 5.20 FP
Example B [1/40 Scoring]: Player X gets 4 kick returns for 100 yards and 3 punt returns for 15 yards.  Total: 115 yards for 2.88 FP.

In example 1, said player has a chance at putting up what a RB2 who doesn't return kicks gets on returns alone.  In example 2, said player can be a solid fill in but you can't rely on him just because he returns kicks compared to the opponent.  He needs to be able to contribute something on offense or defense to be worth more of a start.

I just like having as many players be viable fantasy contributors as possible, regardless of how they get their points.  It's not like there's a plethora of return guys out there who are going to put up big numbers week in & week out, so you're not going to get stud RB's passed over left & right for return guys.  I like to scour the free agency pool every week (I had something like 32 free agency transactions last year in the other league), and having guys out there who can contribute solely on return yards is a nice luxury to have, and keeps things interesting (for me, anyway).  It also adds a little to the later rounds of the draft, knowing there would still be guys out there who can contribute, rather than picking sleeper dudes who may or may not do anything for your team.

But, I'm not in your league, so do with it what you want.  Just giving my perspective as a fantasy player who plays in leagues with return yards counted (here & off-board).

It all comes down to how easy or difficult you want to make it to compete.   In this league, it looks like 40 running backs get started each week, at a minimum.  Make return yards count for a fair bit, and you increase the likelihood of more teams being able to hang week to week.  Increased PPR for tight ends, 2 QB options, big points for sacks, and the really large number of starting spots are already pushing it in the direction of "win however you can," so you may as well include it to some extent.

I'm warming up to the idea of including return yards so I threw up a poll.  There was talk of possibly voting on this in the offseason after VX mentioned it around R16 or so last year so... here we are.

Choose No or your preferred scoring setup.  I didn't include total bonuses since they are a bit too strong (and the new kickoff rules make it tougher to hit them anyway).

Definitely back in (this year HAS to be better almost by default).  Voted 1/25 on return yards but at any rate it almost has to be a scoreable stat since even with the new rules it's a highly important part of the game (and sometimes the sole reason some teams have chances to win).

Question:

I know last year we used the baseball league rules when it came to most of the clerical and league setup. I would assume that would apply to the Expansion teams as well. Yes?

Quote from: TSM Baseball League Rules
O. New managers have two options to start their team. New managers are placed in order of first to express interest get first shot at potential exiting teams available as outlined in option B.

Option A: New managers can start fresh with a brand new team with no keepers. The managers will be entered in the early seeding draft lottery to determine draft pick seeding. They will be seeded before the team with the worst regular season record, and seeded after the winner of the Consolation Bracket IF the Consy winner chooses to use their prize.

Option B: New managers have the option of taking over ownership of a team which has it's owner quit the league. By selecting this option, managers will have the draft seeding in which the previous owner would receive by its end of season standings placement, like all other managers. By selecting this option there will be no lottery placement for the manager in the draft. The players on that team would follow all preset keeper values that the previous manager had. Keepers will follow all previous rules and values. Essentially all that is happening to the pre-existing team is a change in ownership.

Just wondering because more than likely the new managers will want to take over one of the old teams even if all they find is 1 player they want to keep. If I recall there were a few decent players on some of those retiring teams.

Having just looked at the draft setup, I tend to agree.  With expansion picks getting folded in to the regular rounds, I would much prefer to take over Agent's team and have at least some baseline to work off.  At least, based on the rosters in last year's post; I don't know what they looked like at the end of the year, or the rounds where the players were taken.

Three vacated teams and their end of season players with draft values. Remember draft values carry over even if a player was dropped or traded. That mainly is for Agents former team. Kinsey and Mayhem barely made any roster moves so theirs is straight forward.

Reminder to Broward, Edwin, and O.G. that they should select up to 6 guys from the rosters posted above shortly.  The initial post has the team's roster you can choose from.

Also if you have not voted in the return yard poll, please do so by the start of the draft so we can be absolutely clear whether to include it and utilize it in future draft selections.  We currently have 10 of 20 votes.

I think as long as Romo's in that offense, he should still put up good numbers. Hence why I said shocking. Then again, this is the team run by Jerry Jones...

Well with OG taking Jackson with a round 1, at least I've got some choices out there to make.

Keepers and Draft Order updated.

Quote
That's a no. I've already asked on the subject because I would love to correct a keeper or two.
VX can offer his opinion, since he's the actual league owner, but I told Flik no simply because that is part of the risk/reward of Keeping a player and it's not like there wasn't a long enough window to make decisions last year.

December 29th: League Champion and Consolation Bracket Champion Crowned
February 3rd: The final post of keepers by a team owner was put up on the board

That's well over a month that team owners had a chance to peruse their roster and keep a player or not (or change/update their keepers).  Every team faces the same risk of deciding, "Do I keep Player X at his current draft position and is he worth keeping there?"  Offseason drama can certainly happen but that should be part of the evaluation process and part of weighing the risk/reward.

Smues had made a post saying he wanted to see how the Carson Palmer situation unfolded.  VX made a post saying if Palmer (or any other keeper) retired, a new keeper could be selected to replace him and then emphasized that you can keep up to 6 but you don't have to keep 6.  The risk of keeping Palmer is that he could retire.  The reward is that he ends up getting out of Cincinnati/not retiring and exploding for another team.

Eh, guess I'll try for next year. Maybe someone else will drop out.

I dont know if I need to confirm but Ill be back to defend my crown

I voted 1/25 and I think we should do a 100 yd bonus too.  My only problem w it last yr was changing the scoring when the draft was almost over

I'll post keepers this week.  I'm out of town and only have my phone, which makes it a pain to go back and forth between pages.  Are those of us taking over teams drafting from a 1-2-3 expansion position, or taking over the team's draft slots, too?

We (the newcomers) are getting slotted in at the beginning of the round, from what I saw. I'm happy cause I get the 1st pick after the pick from last years consolation game winner.

No. Only if you are not keeping anyone and not taking over a pre-existing team does that occur.

Quote from: League Rules regarding New managers

Start a new team, get the expansion team draft slotting. Take over an old team, reap what that old team's record was and players delivered for it and slot in where it would have had that manager continued playing. That's the pro and con to each of the two option. Option A pro: higher draft slotting. Option B Pro: Get some players that come at a draft round discount to build around prior to the draft.

The former Kinsey team should have a #2 draft slotting.
The former Agent of Oblivion team should have a #7 draft slotting.
The former Mr Mayhem team should have a #12 draft slotting.

Krankor is correct.

I have an extremely busy week coming up and unfortunately since my old yahoo account got wiped out (sadness) we won't have history of last year's league, but I will be starting things up next weekend and am aiming to commence drafting as soon as I have everything settled.

Draft order updated with the correct slot placements shortly, thanks for the heads up, guys.  Also hope the hard work has made it easier on your shoulders, VX ;)  Figured being league owner was enough of a hassle with such a rowdy, hard drinking group.

Any chance we can get this thread pinned since the draft will presumably be starting in about 2 weeks?

I crown Harley Deputy Commissioner in my absence. Great job you've done getting the ball rolling on all this, HQ.

Thread pinned.

I'd like to trade Ochocinco for a round 3 draft pick, any takers?

Edit: First way I wrote it was stupid.

Okay, cause I couldn't find the rules in this thread and didn't feel like digging through last year's:

1. Do keepers "age," i.e. go up in round over time?
2. Is there a limit on how many FA pickups can be kept?  I.E., could I keep Torain, Gronkowski, and STYLEZ G WHITE, giving up #18, #19, and #20?
