UPDATED: Twin Peaks fans’ quarter-century wait is over. One of the top cult series of all time is coming back with a new limited series on Showtime from its original creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost. The nine-episode series will go into production in 2015 for a premiere in 2016 to mark the 25th anniversary of when the series finished its run on ABC. In a fact that will delight Twin Peaks devotees, Lynch and Frost will write and produce all nine episodes, with Lynch set to direct every episode.

'Twin Peaks' Co-Creator Mark Frost On Showtime Limited Series: How It...

DAVID LYNCH;PRODUCER MARK FROSTThe new Twin Peaks will be set in the present day, more than two decades after the events in the first two seasons. It will continue the lore and story of the original series, with Lynch and Frost committed to providing long-awaited answers and, hopefully, a satisfying conclusion to the series. It is unclear which actors from the original series will be featured in the followup. I hear that star Kyle MacLachlan will be back, reprising his role as FBI Agent Dale Cooper who was at the center of the show. The ABC series also featured some of Lynch’s favorite character actors, and it is likely that at least some of them will return. Leading to the 2016 debut of the Twin Peaks limited series, Showtime will re-air the first two seasons of the series, owned by parent CBS Corp.

I've still never seen the 2nd half of season 2.

Gonna post a lot of GIFS in this thread when I get home.  Twin Peaks is one of my favorites, even the truly odd and misses-more-than-it-hits back half of the second season.

OH MY GOD

I'm a little leery with Showtime airing it instead of HBO/Netflix, but I believe in Lynch.

With Season 2, I would stop after episode 9 Arbitrary Law and watch the last 4 or 5 episodes. The finale is legit terrifying.

Well, they've updated it.  Turns out Lynch left the show because he felt Showtime wasn't ponying up enough cash to do the show right, but Showtime is still helpful something can be worked out.

I just saw FWWM for the first time in a theatre. I've seen the show, but never the movie. That was... definitely a David Lynch movie. Yup.

Also, I didn't see it posted here but the episode count was bumped from 9 to 18:

Quote
Lynch filmed the entire season as a movie, with a decision made later how to cut the material into episodes, so the exact episode count had been in flux. “It will be 18 unforgettable hours,” Nevins said.

The vibe I'm getting from the promo material is that the show is going to be more along the lines of Fire Walk With Me or some of Lynch's darker movies like Lost Highway than the tv show. I don't expect to see a lot of comedy which was kind of hit and miss on the show to me anyways. But, I could see that pissing people off.

Yeah, a lot of my friends are suspecting the same thing. Especially given FWWM is what you get when Lynch isn't restricted by a network like ABC.. and since Showtime is basically and HBO-like channel, then all bets are off.

It is very dated at times (the character James especially), but I find it adds to the charm. It's 26 years old so some of the hair and fashion is goofy.

I finished my rewatch a few months ago and it's still really effective and gripping television with some amazing characters. But, two warnings:

It gets borderline unwatchable towards the middle of season 2 before it picks up for the last few episodes and there are heavy soap opera elements at times which could be a turnoff for people.

I failed miserably at re-watching the original series in anticipation. (Aka I never started).  Nevertheless I am DVR-ing the return, and will have it ready to go as soon as I actually do get through the first two seasons.

Only watched the first two so far. Episodes 3 and 4 are available on Showtime on Demand as well as various streaming outlets that carry Showtime like Hulu before they air next week.

Wow, there's a lot to digest. This definitely feels like Lynch is aiming for this to be his magnum opus as there are a ton of nods to his other work and the feel from these two episodes is more Lost Highway, Eraserhead, or Inland Empire which might piss people off expecting the quirky Twin Peaks vibe. It's incredibly dark and mean. I wasn't expecting the scope to be this big which is a great way to take the show.

Spoiler: show
It took me a second to take Cooper Bob seriously with the long hair making him look similar to Gene Simmons or Glenn Danzig, but Kyle Maclachlan was creepy and menacing. Can't wait to see how far his rampage is gonna go.

The disturbing imagery was in full effect with probably five scenes really unnerving me. You can add the creature in the glass box and the weird hobo thing in the prison with Robert Blake's mystery man, Bob, the Eraserhead baby, and the thing behind the dumpster at Winkie's in the David Lynch Nightmare factory.

I kind of groaned when I realized that was Matthew Lillard, but he was actually good in his two scenes. The new characters didn't do a whole lot yet but I'm intrigued to see what Jennifer Jason Leigh is gonna do and if Ashley Judd's part is bigger than lady Ben Horne will ogle.

I loved the nostalgic Twin peaks moments like the Ben and Jerry scene and even seeing stupid James again got me to mark out a bit. It looks like Hawk might play a bigger role here, which is great. The scene with the Good Dale/Laura in The Black Lodge gave me goosebumps. Sheryl Lee still has a shit ton of screen presence and magnetism.

That was probably better than I even imagined. This is pure David Lynch.

Haven't watched three and four yet, either; I'll rewatch the first two episodes before I do.

I echo your sentiments, brocklock. A part of me was worried beforehand that there would be too much lip service paid to the original series, but all the throwbacks have been done well so far.

Episodes 3 and 4:

Spoiler: show
Didn't see another Coop doppelganger getting into the mix. The Dougie scenes were equal parts funny and sad and had some great acting from Maclachlan. I laughed every time he said "HelllOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" in the casino.

The funniest thing ever to me is recasting Michael J. Anderson with the Eraserhead baby attached to a tree. That's what you get for being a rightwing nutjob.

First fifteen minutes of episode 3 were classic Lynch. I wonder what was up with Coop seeing Ronette Pulaski.

Episode 4 was the most like the TV show with plenty of humor and quirkiness. I freaked out when Denise Bryson walked in and is now the FBI chief of staff. The Michael Cera scene was something. Loved seeing Bobby as a cop and that guy has aged really well even if he still makes some weird crying faces.

I'm intrigued at how they get Phillip Jeffries involved without using Bowie. That whole ending scene was intense with the demented Coop thumbs up and his unnerving dead voice. I'm guessing the woman Albert and Gordon are going to find is either Sarah Palmer or Audrey.

Sorry if that was rambling, these episodes are packing so much in. I'm loving this as much as the original series so far. Maybe even more since there's not much filler and I always preferred the Lynch weird dream stuff to the townspeople hijinks.

Re: episode 4

Spoiler: show
I bet the woman Albert and Gordon go talk to is Diane. The person is identified as *knowing* Coop and it stands to reason she knows him better than anyone else. FURTHER SPECULATION: If it's Diane, I'm going with her being played by Laura Dern.

I could see that, I forgot Dern was going to be in it. I chalk that up to avoiding any promotion, photos, or commercials, or anything for the show. Only reason I thought it was Sarah Palmer was that they said they could find the woman at The Big Bang Bar and the only scene with her showed a bunch of empty alcohol bottles.

I watched this yesterday for the first time ever in preparation for the new series and holy shit, I'm still shook. I knew it had a reputation for being way darker than the show, but I was not expecting it to be that fucking raw.

Finally watched The Missing Pieces last night. Lynch was right to cut most of it out of FWWM, though I think keeping in the extra Bowie stuff would have been nice.

I know there's a fan edit out there with the deleted scenes put back in, but I can't imagine the final product being good, even if the deleted scenes themselves were not bad. A nearly four-hour version of this film would have terrible pacing issues.

Re: Phillip Jeffries

Spoiler: show
I know it's been said Bowie isn't in this, but the more the yet-unseen Jeffries keeps getting mentioned I've been working myself up over the idea that he does appear (production wrapped while he was still alive) and they've just kept it secret. Credible speculation has been that Tim Roth is playing Jeffries, which wouldn't be unusual given that Lynch has recasted before (FWWM had a different Donna). Still, I can't shake the foolish notion of getting Bowie. Someone talk me down.

Spoiler: show
Tim Roth seems like a probable choice for Jeffries. I was scared they recasted him with Jim Belushi but Belush is playing a fat henchman. If Bowie does show up though, I'll shriek. I'm already excited that it seems like Ernie Hudson might be getting a semi big role.

I'm pretty sure I figured out like 75% of the main plot, but the Argentina twist adds new kinks to it. The creepy guy in the bar was credited as Richard Horne, so that might be the Richard the giant mentioned in the first scene.

That Amanda Seyfried car scene was pure Lynch. He's so great at holding long takes on innocent moments until they become unsettling.

I love Dougie. That is all.

Spoiler: show
So, the online theory (because the young man in the bar is credited as Richard Horne) is that he is the kid of Audrey and evil Cooper.
And since the slogan is "It's happening again", he will kill a pretty blonde, drug addicted teen who has fallen in with the wrong crowd (Seyfried).  Once the real Cooper comes back he'll lead the investigation.  This would also play into Audrey being the girl they were talking about finding to get the info on evil Cooper.

Chad fucking sucks

Naomi Watts is awesome. That scene with her scolding Jeremy Davies and other guy was hilarious.

The Dougie handshake scene probably got the biggest laugh from me so far. Kyle MacLachlan is great at physical comedy.

That child death was devastating and gruesome. My god.

Only big new cast member left to be revealed is Tim Roth so he has to be playing Jeffries. Wonder when Sherilyn Fenn is gonna pop up.

Re: Dougie

Spoiler: show
Lynch being Lynch, I'm thinking we'll never find out why there's a hit out on Dougie. I don't think it's connected to his gambling problem (the debtors in episode six do not look like the murderous type), and, given Lynch's usual way of doing things, why people want Dougie dead just isn't important to the story being told.

EDIT

Spoiler: show
Going back to remind myself of what's happened to so far, I see I've forgotten that Dark Coop is the one who set in motion the plot to kill Dougie. There's just so much going on in this series it was easy to forget!

Even though I was pretty much fully expecting it, the Diane reveal still made me clap out loud while sitting alone in my living room.

Also this show is surprising "current events" heavy for Lynch and seems really, fully rooted in contemporary, post-financial crisis America (vacant tract homes, Janey-E's rant about working people getting stiffed by shitty interest rates, etc), which I'm finding really interesting. It's like the postwar/50s-style suburbia which was once his milieux and subject has been so thoroughly wiped out that it can't even be obliquely evoked or recreated (except through cloying and obvious pastiche, i.e. Wally Brando)

To add to that, Byron

Spoiler: show
The residents of Twin Peaks, for all their flaws, are nothing if not sincere, which is what makes the presence of Deputy Chad particularly jarring. He scoffs at the Log Lady, took a bribe from Richard Horne, ridiculed Truman's dead son, etc. His mocking cynicism is another way the 21st century has imposed itself on the show.

Yes, this show has been fantastic. Everything's starting to really pickup pace wise and the plot is coming together.

Spoiler: show
The two minute sweeping scene is already getting a bunch of hate online haha.

A lot more exposition than most David Lynch projects, but I'm fine with it.

Naomi Watts is giving maybe my favorite non Maclachlan performance so far. She's so good at nailing the vibe of Lynch dialogue. Laura Dern was terrific as well.

That menacing little person assassin (Who's character name is Ike "The Spike" Stradtler!) getting chopped in the throat by Dougie/Coop made me simultaneously laugh and scream.

I'm pretty sure the noise Beverley/Ben heard was Josie.
