Looks like Assassin's Creed may bomb pretty quickly, haven't read many good reviews + it competing with a lot of bigger movies.

I've given up on the hopes that someday, somebody will actually make the video game adaptation that's actually good. They are always going to be bad.

Later this week "Hidden Figures" and "A Monster Calls" get wide releases, and we get our first "fuck you, it's January" movie in "Underworld: Blood Wars" ("Amityville: The Awakening" was supposed to come out on Friday, but got moved up again to June.)

I didn't have any hope for Assassin's Creed.  I just kept thinking of Prince of Persia when I saw the previews. Good video game movies just don't happen.
I watched RAW. I thought it sucked. The usual problems and such.

I'm just shocked that they were able to sign Cotillard and Fassbender to this abomination. Jeremy Irons and Brandon Gleeson are in this too? Well it definately has the best cast for a video game movie, that's for sure.

"Sing" has made almost as much as "Moana" and in half the time. That's just wrong.

Oh and "Hidden Figures" was the actual number 1. Beat "Rogue One" by about $800,000.

Fun little factoid about "Monster Trucks": It was shot in 2014, was supposed to get a release in May of 2015, and had it's date moved constantly. Plus, last year the studio said they'd be taking a $115 million dollar loss out of it. To top it all off-it's actually based on a pitch made by a studio executives 4 year old son.

Anyways, here's your honorable mentions/movies barely holding on.

Is the new xXx expected to do poorly?  I saw in my e-mail late last night when I got in that AMC Stubs e-maied me about going to see that for free on either Thursday or Friday when it opened.  Can only imagine that means they are desperate to get people in.

It made 7 million Friday night so it will end up close to 20 million for the weekend which is better than I expected it to do.

Expectations were that xXx and Split were going to go neck and neck, but Friday was huge for Split, almost $15 million on the way to close to a $30 million take and well above expectations. The movie was made for $10 million so it's another win for Blumhouse and M. Night doing smaller budget movies.

Even if it bombs here, the new "xXx" movie will do great overseas. A recent example of this: the latest "Underworld" movie. It won't make it's budget back here, but it already has overseas. That and it was fairly cheap to make.

That's what I thought.  Even if I have no interest in it, there's a market for it.  The biggest thing in making this before would be paying for Vin Diesel, who isn't in high demand outside of movies that aren't Fast or Furious.

"Kong" actually made $11 or $16 million more than it was projected to. It will have some stiff competition in the weeks ahead ("Beauty and the Beast", "Power Rangers", "Ghost in the Shell" and "Boss Baby") so good luck.

A little sad that John Wick 2 may/may not even crack $100 Million but at the same time, it did double the original's box office and was going up against juggernauts (Logan, the newly released Kong, Split's long ass run, and LEGO Batman Movie) while also battling stuff like La La Land and Hidden Figures. I'd call that a pretty good box office return, all things considered.

It doubled the 40 million dollar budget just in America while grossing 153 million worldwide so I'd say it did really good

Lionsgate is an interesting case in that they are a major studio, but with a few exceptions (such as the upcoming "Power Rangers" movie, the "Hunger Games" franchise and bombs such as "Gods of Egypt" and the "Conan the Barbarian" remake) they don't make movies with huge budgets. It's usually

1.) Something made with a modest budget that'll make it's money back (such as "John Wick" and the films of Tyler Perry)

2.) Something that's picked up for distribution by more cinephile/art house friendly arms such as A24 (who have distributed the likes of "Moonlight", "The Witch", "Green Room" and "The Lobster" for example). At the same time, they will also release something that's a festival favorite in a wide release, and not just through A24. Three examples of that are "Cabin Fever", the first "Saw" movie and "You're Next". These were horror films that proved to be popular in the festival circuit, and the studio took a chance on by giving them wide releases. Most other studios back in the day would probably dump them straight to video, or in today's world would release them in a minuscule amount of theaters while trying to go by on demand. Speaking of which...

3.) A lot of movies they've put out-indie/art house faves like "Slow West", indie horror movies such as "The Monster" and whatever pile of shit Bruce Willis, Nicholas Cage or John Cusack will appear in either for a 5 minute cameo because fuck you pay them (Willis) or a significant role for once reliable A-list actors (Cage and Cusack)-go by in the on demand world. The market has changed considerably in the past ten years-hell, there are studios (Magnolia and IFC for example) who mostly get by on small releases in theaters while getting the rest of their cash via on demand services.

I went to see Kong Thursday night and not only was I surprised that Beauty and the Beast was out because I legit forgot it was there already but how crowded it was.  I'm guessing that ended beating up the Batman vs. Superman previous March record, right?

So Your Name only ran for 6 days, apparently, but made a very impressive $2.4 Million in that run.

A lot of movies on that list that may not even make back their budget domestically including Smurfs (maybe), Power Rangers, Kong, Life, and the obvious bomb in Ghost In the Shell.

In what will be shocking to everyone who isn't Guy Ritchie, King Arthur is the first bomb of the summer.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4291&p=.htm

"King Arthur so far has the lead after taking in an estimated $5.3 million on Friday as it heads toward a $14-15 million weekend while Snatched took in $5 million as it is likely to pull ahead of Arthur due to the Mother's Day holiday and might manage a $15.5 million three-day.

Meanwhile, at the top it's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is also performing below our expectations after taking in an estimated $16.3 million on Friday and looking at a $60-63 million second weekend, dropping a bit more than we expected, but pretty much right in line with Marvel tradition"

Hollywood has to learn some things people want only as a tv series when it comes to something like King Arthur and similar genres.

I don't understand why studios keep bringing back old stories like King Arthur and Hercules. They spend a shitload of money on them but people are ready to move on.

What was the last sword and sandal flick that was a big hit? Clash Of The Titans? 300?

It seems like every year Hollywood makes 2 or 3 of these that cost 200 million to make and they flop every time.

Not big hits, but I think "Immortals" and the "300" sequel did alright.
