Did people expect Blade Runner to bomb?

Also it seems like we can tell when a movie is going to bomb hard just from the message board. How can they not tell?

The original bombed, and is mostly known to geeks, people who saw it a long time ago and cinephiles, so nothing about it bombing is surprising.

In 1982 when the original was released, it grossed just $23.44 Million. Adjusted to today, that's still only $70.89 Million over 5 weekends.

For comparison, Blade Runner 2049 was originally projected to open around $50-$55 Million so it coming in at just $32-$33 Million is a massive blow.

On a note not related to the box office, the original got a mixed critical response when it was released, while this one is mostly getting praised. I think it's a difference between age gap and today's critics being different than the ones of old, but that's another discussion altogether.

I AM THE CHEESE! I AM THE BEST CHARACTER ON THE SHOW!! I AM BETTER THAN BOTH THE SALAMI AND THE BOLOGNA COMBINED!!

someone on here just called me a "Cunk" because my wife wont let me buy a harp.

Doesn't do the movie much good when the director comes out and admits the movie is shit because he couldn't finish it

Every ad for that movie was so bad. How is a guy who dresses up like frost supposed to be terrifying?

A movie about a guy who dresses up like a clown made big money so no reason a moving snowman couldn’t scare people too.

A movie about a guy who dresses up like a clown made big money so no reason a moving snowman couldn’t scare people too.

The clown movie was 1.) getting good word of mouth ("The Snowman" wasn't) and 2.) had nostalgia on it's side.

I posted in the horror thread already on Amityville but that's hilarious they only did over $700 total on 10 screens. YIKES. But then again when you put it for free on Google Play....well....why bother with a theatrical release really? Plus they have delayed over and over on it since 2013 or something.

The new Saw movie really didn't do much $$$ wise, and I think I read that is the second worse opening for a Saw film. Obviously this second wave they are trying with the Saw franchise isnt going to go far.

It looks like it was ONLY on Saturday too, so I'm assuming there was some kind of contractual obligation that required them to have some kind of theatrical release for it, but they obviously didn't care if it made any money in theaters.

Thor really deserved It! I'm shocked Jigsaw only fell to #3. That one was a lot of fun.

Don't want to steal Gary's thunder, but Justice League is projected at a 96 million opening which is considered a disappointment and is the lowest opening so far for one of these DC Universe movies. It was predicted to do around a 110 million opening. The budget was projected at 300-350 million with the reshoots, but I imagine overseas will probably save the movie.

What do you reckon the chances are that Justice League will "bounce back" to have at least one more week on top, before Episode VIII comes out?

It might depending on how well Coco holds up. Only new wide release coming out the next two weeks is some action comedy with Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones as horned up old men getting chased by the mafia. The rest of the movies coming out are Oscar contenders getting small releases before presumably opening wider.

My son and I went to the movies. Thank God he chose Coco over The Star. It was actually a pretty good movie. And it had a Frozen mini-movie before.
I watched RAW. I thought it sucked. The usual problems and such.

Why did you just say “actually” with a Pixar release?  Also Star is probably still 50x better than Justice League so wasn’t the worst choice your child could have made.  Be worried if he wanted to see Daddy’s Home 2.

I've read the Frozen short is getting ripped due to its length (21 Minutes) and that it was originally intended to air on ABC as a Christmas Special before getting thrown in front of Coco.

I don't know why I said actually. I've pretty much enjoyed all of their movies. IMO this one wasn't on the level of the top Pixar movies, but it did definitely start pulling on the heart strings.

Luckily he has no interest in Daddy's Home 2, but I think I'm going to have to go see Jumanji 2 of which I have no interest.

The plot did revolve around Elsa and Anna looking for a family tradition for Christmas. Then Olaf went looking for a tradition for them, gathers a bunch of crap in a sled, it catches fire, Olaf gets lost, hilarity ensues. I thought it'd get a better reaction from the kids, especially the first time Elsa or Anna appeared on screen but most of the kids in my theater stayed relatively silent about it.

Not surprisingly, it turns out that the answer to my previous question was, "No fucking chance." Now I kinda want to see if a holiday surge can push Thor back over Justice League for a week.

My son wants to see Ferdinand. I guess I'll report back after we see it this weekend. I'm sure I'll have nothing to report.
I watched RAW. I thought it sucked. The usual problems and such.

My wife loved the book and was going to force me to see it. Then she saw the trailer.

Let me know how bad it is.

I loved the book too. I used to read it all the time as a kid. We'll see what this produces.

I'm starting to feel bad about making my parents take me to so many kids movies when I was that age because now my son does it and in some cases (not all) it's torture.

It’s been well reviewed if you take anything from RT and more directly, my seven year old nephew who is supremely picky said he really liked this movie.

I didn't realize Ferdinand had a budget of 111 million. I imagine it will probably have good holds through the holidays, but it's got some catching up to do to make a profit. Overseas will probably help it. Sisters and the last Alvin And The Chipmunks movie had similar openings of around 13/14 million when they opened up against Force Awakens and finished with around 85 million domestic.

Voice Cast and CGI. While CGI does cut down on the time needed for the animation, it also is still incredibly expensive and costly to utilize. If an entire film is largely done with CGI, that's gonna make it even more expensive than a traditional animated film with half the CGI usage.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, one of, if not the first, to make a film entirely of CGI had a budget of $137 Million for comparison's sake. Walt Disney's Frozen had a $150 Million budget.

Compare that to say The Lion King, which despite being more labor intensive, only had a budget of $45 Million.

Good insight but I'd be curious where those numbers were with inflation too considering Lion King was 93, Final Fantasy was around 2001 and Frozen being 2014.

For 2016...
Lion King (1993) would cost $75.824 Million
Final Fantasy (2001) would cost $191.166 Million
Frozen (2014) would cost $156.609 Million

Aladdin from 1992 would cost $48.595 Million ($28 Million budget at the time). So it's a pretty stark difference even adjusting for inflation.
