Hey, more snark that says nothing.  But to continue, just to be perfectly clear: your argument is that states should have whatever rights they want, no matter how ghastly their decisions may be on a local level.  That the federal government should have absolutely no power to say "uh, that looks like a really fuckin' bad idea" and veto it.  That we should essentially go back to the Articles of Confederation.  Is that it?

Had Precious "George Wallace" Roy jumped the shark prior to this thread or was this his big breakout?

Anyway, one minor quibble, Nocalmike, in between shitloads of nachos, said that Obamacare didn't include any cost containment measures, which actually isn't true.  The extent to which they'll be successful is debated, but there are a whole buncha measures for cost containment included in the law.

This is what Wikipedia says:

Quote
Impose an annual tax of $95, or up to 1% of income, whichever is greater, on individuals who do not secure insurance; this will rise to $695, or 2.5% of income, by 2016. This is an individual limit; families have a limit of $2,085 or 2.5% of income

I really don't know all the exact specifics of my work insurance plan, except that I only get around 400 bucks paid out (then it becomes some 70/30 split until some maximum is hit and then other things happen) but I pay in over a grand over the course of a year and 1% of my income would only be like 400 bucks max. Even still, I would rather keep my work insurance than deal with whatever type of insurance the government was handing out. That kinda shit scares me because I just don't have any sort of trust in any higher powers anymore.

I just read that opposition to Obamacare is highest in the states with below-average/low life expentency, i.e. opposition is strongest in states which would most benefit from universal healthcare or health insurance reform.

Never change, America.

As unhelpful as it may be, it does re-enforce snuffy's earlier point re: Americans understanding of their asses vs. a hole in the ground.

Anyway, congratulations America, even if this whole debacle made you look like a bunch of barely-literate, easily excitable goons to such a degree that I questioned how you lot ever came to rule the world in the first place.

According to Wiki, Canada is 77% Christian, with 16% claiming "no religion" or "unaffiliated".  It's almost exactly identical to America's numbers.

Oh man. Today I went to pick my son up and my dad started in on me.
"Well good thing you have health insurance through work or Obama would be looking to take all your money!" I tried to ignore him then he brought Canada up. "Ask Canada how well this works. Some of those idiots still think it's a good idea even though it's destroying their country!"
WTF? Did he just completely pull that out of his ass?

Then I had a guy at work tell me he's moving to New Zealand. He went on about how the supreme court failed him or something.

I'm trying to look at this objectively. When the Right succeeded at something did the people on the left act like this big of babies? Because man these people I keep hearing from sound so butt hurt it's not funny.

The Right has no accomplishments as big as healthcare. The last Republican president to do anything contructive for the people was Teddy Roosevelt.

The Right has no accomplishments as big as healthcare. The last Republican president to do anything contructive for the people was Teddy Roosevelt.

Nixon did quite a bit in favor of affirmative action.  He also created the EPA and the clean skies act.  He tried to get govt subsidized healthcare for lower income families passed but was shot down by congress.

Eisenhower integrated the armed services, passed two landmark civil rights acts and this went down on his watch.  He also essentially built the national highways.

Nixon was the shit in some ways.  He was way ahead of his time on stuff...but he brought the ultimate shame to the office so people generally ignore it.

But that's pretty much to the point where old school Republicans wouldn't be Republicans nowadays.  Reagan raised taxes a bunch of times and was for a lot of stuff that wouldn't get him invited to the GOP ball.  They ignore that when they build his statues though.

It would be one thing if conservatives just left it at "I think this plan is financially unwise and we won't be able to pay for it" or "I believe so strongly in the free market that I oppose the nationalization of services in this manner".  Those would be sane and arguable points (that I don't agree with, but still fairly reasonable).  Yet the vast majority of the attacks against it basically amount to "Obama is Hitler and his plan for health insurance hides a sinister Illuminati agenda".  And most of the pundits making these claims really know better; they're just exaggerating this shit to epic mythic proportions because they know there are millions and millions of Americans who are somehow dumb enough to actually believe that bullshit.

Yeah, forced to have health insurance is equal to slavery.
Yep, about dead even. Nope, no difference between them.

Forcing people from their homeland in chains, making them work for you, raping their women and slaughtering them while whipping them into the submissive name you pick for them is EXACTLY like telling people to get health insurance!

Although I have to say, the IT problems with the federal exchange are a huge embarrassment and worthy of all of the scorn the Limbaugh-ites throw their way. The Republican shutdown and debt ceiling brinkmanship have pulled the administration's ass out of the fire by distracting from this, but it's a huge debacle. Someone, I'd say no less than the HHS Secretary, should be fired probably, immediately.
