MoviePass

So I don't know how many of you out there know what MoviePass (http://www.moviepass.com) is, but it's basically a theater subscription service.  For $30 a month (I've read prices may vary based on location) you get a fake credit card that is good for one ticket to a 2D movie every day at any theater that participates with them.  It's invite only at this time and after signing up for notifications around a month and a half ago, got an email today with an invite.  I just bought a subscription, and I know this is going to end up with me feeling like if I DON'T go see movies I'm just throwing money away, even though I would normally never see the movie.   Also for signing up I got 10 invites to send out to people so if anyone on the board is interested just shoot me a PM with your email.

One ticket every... what?  Every week, every day, every hour?  The whole "invite-only" deal seems kinda suspicious, too, that would seem to guarantee a low ceiling on their possible sales.

What do movies cost in non-major metropolitan areas these days?  I've been paying $10-$12 a ticket while I have been, like Tron, living for the citay.

I can see this being a favorable model for theaters since they make their cash on concessions, anyway. Unless you're sneaking in a backpack full of burgers, of course.

Given your prospective claim to the title of Bob Barron, can you tell us what underage Disney star you plan on having an unhealthy obsession with?

I'm somewhat disappointed that I don't even know enough about Disney shows to come up with an answer

The only thing that worries me about this is you need to download an app and other shit so they can sell your information to marketers. It sounds like a telemarketing companies dream. And without the app, seems like you can't go to the movies with the debit card.

Last thing I need is more spam email and spam phone calls.

If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. 30 to 40 a month for upwards to 28 to 30 movies?
But man, it does really sound tempting.

Realistically companies already have your info and if they don't they're going to get it eventually. If you have decent spam filters than email shouldn't be an issue at all. I don't think I've had spam show up in my inbox at all this year. If anything I have to check my junk folder to make sure that it isn't filtering out too much.

Their official reason why you need the app is so that they can use your phones GPS to verify that youre actually at the theater before giving you the ticket, so you dont just let someone else use your card. But yeah i can see that aspect getting really annoying.

In theory, how is letting someone else use your card any different than using it yourself?  It's just one card, and only works once per day.  It's not like you're stealing any extra movie tickets which weren't rightfully yours already.  And this alleged security measure has gaping holes in it; you could just accompany the other person to the box office and then leave, or let them borrow your phone, or countless other things.  Sounds like it's just a bullshit excuse to sign you up for spam.

Just set up an email address solely for this app, that way you'll never see any of the resulting spam in your real email.

My card finally came today.  Of course between signing up and getting it I got put back on the road so now I'm not gonna have time to go all the damn time like I was planning.   So now the question becomes sleep or movies, which is more important?

So I've had the card for a little under a month and I've seen 9 movies with it.  Falling shy of a Barronesque pace but I've seen 6 in the past 9 days and will go up to 8 in 11 by Sunday.  Trying to keep track of everything I've seen but it's way too early to post a list yet.

Not yet.  It has however made me hate previews and question why I don't just show up 15 minutes late for every movie.  Hopefully I'll learn my lesson soon.

invite sent.   I'm now up to 37 movies from this year seen, 17 in theaters via moviepass, 4 in theaters before I had the pass, and 16 via redbox(in an attempt to catch up on what I missed before I had the pass)   I'm thinking I'll post my first rankings list when I hit 50, but the goal is to wind up at 150 before the end of the year.

*BUMP*

So back in August this company decided to drop it's subscription fee to 9.95 a month. Needless to say they were a tad overwhelmed with sign ups. The standard 5-7 business days for getting the card has stretched out to weeks for some. And they haven't been on the ball in terms of getting back to people's questions. But, in spite of all this, I decided to sign up a week ago. Optomistic that my card will get here by the end of the month and excited to try this out. I already have the app downloaded on my phone.

Got mine last month. Used it twice so far. It's not great for me because I tend to get my reserved seat days in advance, but other than not being able to do that it's worked fine. And most movies up here cost more than ten bucks so one movie a month and I get my monies worth.
I want Jimmy Fallon to be dead. That doesn't make me a bad person.

I also signed back up for MP when they did the $10/m price drop.    It took about a month to get mine.   I've been using it far less than I did the first time, so that I don't completely burn myself out and never want to go to the movies again.

Same with me and still waiting for the card (3 weeks now) but I can wait since it's such a good value long term.

What I haven't been able to figure out is if I can use MP and still receive rewards pts through the various chains I frequent.   Probably not.

Yeah, you can, because it processes through their system like any prepaid debit card.  The individual employee might hesitate if they know what MP is, but most of them don't get paid enough to give a damn.

Why should they care anyway. Not like they're making comission off ticket sales.

Once you actually get that email, it's accurate.  Unbekowest to me, I inadvertently gave them my work address and because I never look at my desk, I was unaware it been there a whole week so my rage at MP was unwarranted.

Got my card on Friday, haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I will tomorrow night. I have a feeling I'm going to try and see as many different films as possible. Even films I normally would dismiss because why not. I might actually feel compelled to post blog reviews now.

I got my card today after only 6 days of waiting so it seems they've fixed that problem (less people signing up I'd assume). I'll probably use it tomorrow for the first time.

Seeing Thor tonight, 4th film using this since activating last Monday. And I'll make it 5 times by tomorrow when I check out The Florida Project. This thing really works a lot better than I even thought it would. And I'm learning ways to use it for films I technically can't see (Since it only loads the ticket price, if there's say a Fathom event screening for a film that isn't listed in the app, I'll just buy a ticket for the same price for a film showing that evening that does pop up and Ta-da!)
