The other lead is Vince Vaughn.

Maybe season 2 is a parody?

Sounds like Vaughn's playing a villain which could be okay if he channels his weirdo role from Clay Pigeons.

I think that was the last time he tried to act. I like Ferrell in movies (moreso comedies), but he has that Ben Affleck perpetual mehness with me. I just can't get excited when he's onscreen.

I'll check it out, but my expectations are real low.

I didn't care at all or Ferrell until in bruges and seven psychopaths. Now I think he could pull off a True Detective season. Vince Vaughn I've never liked in anything though.

Those are the 2 movies that sold me on him.

Vaughn has shown he knows how to act in the past. Maybe he can pull something out of his hat. Since he's the villain, that could help.

You may be right.. Justin Lin is directing the first two episodes.
You should probably put your bandit hat on now.

Community Paintball was great too, but they were deliberately harnessing his Justin Lin-ness for what they were going for in the episode.

Don't want to write off True Detective season 2 without seeing any of it but these announcements about who's involved are a bit disconcerting. But there are plenty examples of film people getting outside of their comfort zone and doing awesome stuff - really comes down to who's overseeing everything.

I would guess they are going to keep it, similar to how American Horror Story keeps the music but everything else changes.

I have no real opinion on the casting.  Farrell and Vaughn can act.  McAdams can too.

TD season 2 will not be TD season 1.  If it has to be held up to those lofty expectations it will never meet them.  I'm going to judge it on it's own merits.  If it's gritty and dark and weird with a good story and good performances I will like it.

As for the song, I think they should do like the Wire did, and have a different cover of it each season.  Ties them together, but gives each season it's own identity

I think it should be a new song.  The last song really captured the nasty, swampy, spooky feel of the first season and I don't know if it would be able to work with the new one.

http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/main-cast-of-true-detective-season-2-confirmed-including-taylor-kitsch-190

this has character details

Quote
Colin Farrell as Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him.

Vince Vaughn as Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.

Rachel McAdams as Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves.

Taylor Kitsch as Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle officer for the California Highway Patrol, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened.

Kelly Reilly as Jordan, Frank Semyon’s wife, a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions.

Kelly Reilly being in this is new to me, she's a solid actress. Still going in this with low expectations. Taylor Kitsch will probably be the cast MVP.

Also I want them to keep the theme from the first season but if they are hell bent on changing it, the song in the trailer wouldn't be a bad choice. Set the mood.

Other than Colin I didn't really care for anyone on this episode much or find anyone interesting. Nothing really stood out either. Not a very exciting beginning.

So we have two guys shooting blanks and one with ED. Plus the female lead's boyfriend freaking out over what I'm assuming was something being stuck in his butt. Someone has issues with their manhood.

Also, everyone is so tortured!

Colin Ferrell is the only good part of this show. I dozed off when he was offscreen. Vince Vaughn is trying, but his character is a total bore.

Fukunaga was a massive loss. Even when nothing was happening, the visuals and mood kept me engaged. The directing and cinematography is just flat and uninspired making this a chore to sit through.

Spoiler: show
The ending was something. Hopefully Ray comes back as a robot because they can't kill the only interesting character 2 eps in.

Trying to replace Fukunaga with the Fast & Furious director might be the biggest series blunder of this decade. Now Pissolotto's writing is exposed and the charm of hearing legitimate actors recite his edgy bullshit has fallen flat within two episodes.

Spoiler: show
if Colin is dead I have no more reason to watch the show because he is the only character I've been given a reason to give a shit about. If he isn't dead it was was a shocking twist for no reason but to be a twist because he took two huge blasts right up close. One from POINT BLANK range. He has to be dead. I don't care about anyone but his Fat Kid now.

The opening with rambling on lying in bed was fucking terrible. Made me glad when they got to the guys burned off junk. It got better from there but still not very good. Vince's character is one of the most incompetent mob bosses ever. Not only did he get hustled by this guy, he didn't keep an eye on him to see what he was doing in his personal life at all. AND he gets involved personally in threatening/assaulting people in broad daylight. That's what hired goons are for.

I'm not sold on this season from the two episodes I've seen. It's not terrible per say. The acting is fine and all. It's just missing that special something now that Fukunaga is gone.

Spoiler: show
There's a lot of online speculation that the gun was filled with rock salt. I didn't see blood or gore, so it's possible that he's still alive waiting to yell obscenities at children and drink.

Vaughn seems to be getting most of the venom online, but Taylor Kitsch is much worse imo. His line deliveries are so wooden, he has two facial expressions, and any ounce of charisma he displayed on Friday Night Lights has completely disappeared. The Vince monologue was awful, but I did like that scene where he started threatening that guy who got his ass kicked. McAdams is doing fine so far. I'm waiting for her character to get fleshed out more. I loved her scenes with Colin.

It's not good, but there are only six episodes left, so i'm gonna finish it.

There was plenty of Colin Ferrell stuff from the trailer that wasn't in the first 2 episodes, so either that was filmed on purpose to throw people off and/or cut from the show, or he isn't dead.

Kitsch is terrible yeah. And I did like the Colin/McAdams scenes although them driving around in the car talking just led to (unfair) flashbacks to season 1 which of course then left me wishing I was watching that.

Better episode this week again but still some laugh out load scenes. Vince Vaughn Fist Fighter! Now we have two characters with limp dick issues. I'm waiting for Bike Cop to get hit on by his new friend and go HAM on him. Colin was the highlight once again. His Ex needs more screen time too.

Oh god I just laughed so hard at that.

That shootout was so fucking stupid and over the top it belonged in an 80's action movie. It was completely out of place and leaves nowhere to go. Seems like a bad attempt to top the amazing action last year when they were rushing around in the neighborhood getting chased and shit. I think like 50 fucking people got killed in this shootout. The only people left were the 3 main protagonists. How convenient! The action was cool and everything but just silly as fuck.

I'm hate watching at this point. There's no reason to care about any of the characters and stuff is just happening. Every episode has at least huge unintentionally funny moments per show.

That shootout had some action, but it was just a poorly shot and constructed version of the Heat shootout.
