I'm still behind but Okada is just so awesome. I really thought Hangman was going to win.

Interesting piece.

Short answer, without Favre the Packers were fucked.  They would have had a parade of bad rookies and mediocre veterans, and no way White comes.  If they still draft Brunell they might hover around mediocrity instead of being outright terrible, but I really don't see much hope for them until around 1998-00 when good QBs finally started arriving in the NFL like Peyton, McNabb, Culpepper, and Brady.  Most of the 90s were a real dry spell at the position with it being largely dominated by the same guys who were drafted in the 80s.  If they missed getting Bledsoe in 1993 (and it would be tough to do worse than the 1992 Patriots) there wasn't a lot available.

Of the scenarios you mentioned, I think trading for a couple of years of Montana probably would have been the best option.  It mostly worked out for Kansas City.  Heck, he got them closer to the Super Bowl than they have ever been since.  The only other time the Chiefs came that close was in the Dawson/Stram days.

Wrestling / Does Gedo know how to book an effective heel?
« Last post by Damaramu on Today at 03:51:01 AM »
Hey guys I know we have a puro thread and a G1 thread going on right now, but I didn't want this topic to detract from either since it's about a specific topic.

I brought it up in the G1 thread but I'm beginning to wonder something: does Gedo know how to book an effective heel? I think he's a great booker, but is this is biggest weakness as a booker? Or does he know and I'm not seeing examples that are right in front of my face? I think it could be an interesting discussion.

I know that NJPW wrestlers have a lot of leeway on their characters and storylines, but I also know from listening to various wrestler interviews that he still comes up with a ton of it. Jericho said it was Gedo's idea to brawl outside the ring before the Naito match. Juice described him as a red pen. He said he Gedo gives you the basis of the idea. Then the wrestlers develop it then Gedo comes back through like an editor and cleans it up and adds or subtracts.

I know they have had people get good heat in the past too like the original Bullet Club and Naito before the fans ate his LIJ act up.

But was that because of the talent of those guys?

Because right now we have Jay White trying to be a heel and the Firing Squad trying to be heels and I don't think it's working and what is working is getting extremely repetitive to the point it's not going to work much longer. Is this because of these guys or Gedo? If it is because of these guys why hasn't Gedo stepped in to make sure things are evolving and they're doing more than a one note heel act?

It feels like all Jay White does as a heel is ball shot people behind the ref's back (after he took the ref out).

It feels like all the Firing Squad has done so far as heels is interfere to the point it's already old a week into the tournament.

There's no nuance with these guys. No little things during the matches that heels do. They don't beg off. They don't do anything dastardly to get a subtle advantage. Their post-match beatdowns aren't particularly brutal. They don't really play to the crowd like they should or at all in some cases. It feels like they don't really do much of anything in the body of the match to make the fans boo them.

I know some of it wouldn't work for all of them. The cowardly heel stuff wouldn't work for Fale, but there's other things he can do as a big man shitkicker to get heat.

Jay White played to the crowd in San Francisco and the whole match had heat. He doesn't do any of that in NJPW. Imagine if he did something dastardly on the outside and then dropped to his knees and outstretched his arms to the fans just like he did to Josh Barnett. I know that's just something small, but it's something he could add.

I would really like to hear some thoughts and counterpoints on this because it's something that I've been thinking about since G1 started.

Disney is also a publicly traded company. If they didn't do something, the could have lost a lot of money and investors.

Especially with the shareholders vote on the Fox purchase (which is half stock) coming up next week. This is not the time for Disney to dig in their heels on this.  The Fox deal is a much bigger issue than what happens with the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Really great night of action outside of Tama/Omega which I don't give a shit about. You can argue the DQ was needed for the story to move ahead or whatever but then maybe don't do one the night before. I don't know who watches NJPW for that kind of shit. I watch it for everything else that was on the show.

Sanada has been on absolute fire ever since his match with Okada and has really caught on with the crowds as well. TBH I want him to get the megapush.

Totally agreed. The DQ here inunderstand, but it was overkill at this point. Interference could have been fine previously, but too many DQs aren't good.

This is really exposing the hypocrisy of some (by no means all) people on the far left to me. Some people I know who are always the first to join ever campaign to get someone fired are freaking out over this.

Disney being a company with a terrible past (and having a terrible present in many ways) doesn't really change that he needed to be fired. The fact that the people who dug this up are complete scum of the earth who are exploiting it for their own disgusting ends doesn't either.

Also the lesson to me isn't "delete your shit" because it can be dug up and it'll make you look even worse. It's to not be a fucking douche in the first place.

It's too late for most of us who lived in the era of flame wars and boardin' hard but maybe our kids will be smarter. Probably not.

I had no idea about Favre's hip. Did he ever get surgery on it?

I thought part 2 was nowhere near the first one's league.
