What games did you dislike that were universally praised?
« on: June 16, 2017, 01:10:36 AM »
So I thought of this topic last night because I quit Resident Evil 7.

I was excited to play it and I forced myself to play all the way through the first part where you keep tangling with Jack before I had to quit.

I just hated the sense of dread. I've never liked horror movies or jump scares and this one had it in spades. Plus I came to the realization that I just flat don't like survival horror. I hate fighting enemies that are absurdly stronger than me with limited ammo ad health.  I hate having to avoid fights. It's just not my thing. I felt weird quitting because the game was so universally praised.
I watched RAW. I thought it sucked. The usual problems and such.

GTA V. I didn't get very far before I got sick of it and never turned it on again.

The first Uncharted is hot garbage. I think people were just desperate for something to play on their PS3 when it came out so it got good reviews and maybe I would have liked it if I played it in 2007, but I found it to be really bad.

You have this huge island that looks like it would be fun to explore and they make the game super linear and throw a few shiny things on the ground to find that don't add anything to the game. I don't know where this endless wave of bad guys came from, but there are somehow hundreds of them willing to work for the main villain.

And the game play is so tedious. Kill some bad guys, run ahead, kill some more bad guys, run ahead. And when they finally switch things up a little bit and you have to drive a boat, they make it the slowest part of the game and you're just dodging exploding barrels with bad controls.

I know the other games are supposed to be a lot better, but the first one left such a bad taste in my mouth I haven't felt like going and playing the next one yet.

I have no use for the Kingdom Hearts series either, though I did enjoy Chain of Memories.

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Sailing everywhere is a pain in the ass, plus putting together the Triforce is a chore.

Edit: I thought Bioshock sucked too. You kill thousands of splicers while doing all these fetch quests. The graphics and story is okay but it would have been better as something else other than a FPS.

The Super Smash Bros. series of titles got old pretty fast for me. I didn't mind the first one but haven't bothered much with the others unless I'm playing my nieces/nephews.

First Uncharted is really bad.

First Uncharted was ok for it's time, but the bullet sponge enemies combined with the shitty motion controls make it almost impossible to enjoy now.   UC2 is a HUGE upgrade though (before going back down with UC3 and getting back to form in UC4)

As for the question at hand, I thought GTA 4 was a fucking boring pile of shit, and didn't really like RDR either.  I don't really like Bethesda's games either, as they're *too* open-ended for me.  Sure, freedom is nice, but when I have absolutely no incentive to progress the main story, I quickly lose interest in your game as a whole.  Also, every Metal Gear Solid with the exception of 5 is horrible at the whole *game* part.

I don't think the first Uncharted is that widely praised. I didn't really hear the hype until 2 came out. Which is better than the first one, but nearly the same game.

I couldn't get into Far Cry 3

It has an 88 on Metacritic, but reading through most of the reviews on there, a lot of the praise is along the lines of "everything else on the PS3 so far is pretty bad".

I'm surprised more people didn't have something to say about me turning off the new RE. My buddy was giving me a hard time saying it was a tremendous game and I just had to stick it out longer because it gets easier at the end. I just can't stand the fact that the Bakers (I think that's their last name) are like unkillable monsters that I have to avoid until it's time to throw down. I HATE enemy avoidance. I just want to be a badass that blows stuff away.

The first Zelda game I ever tried was Zelda II: The Adventure of Link for NES.  I couldn't figure out where the hell I was supposed to go, and it pretty much turned me off of the Zelda series as a whole.  I liked the cartoons though

Wasn't Zelda II universally panned? I mean it sucks it turned you off to the whole series, but I don't think it's a good representative of Zelda.

It was completely different from the first one and they never tried a Zelda game like that again. I never beat it.

Also, I never played RE7 Dama, so I couldn't tell you if it's overrated. I'm not really into survival horror games.

I have another one to add to the list and this probably will piss someone off: Portal

I'm not really into action puzzle games and with Portal I get stuck in a room, get frustrated, and then watch videos on YouTube on it. I go back into the game and I still can't do it.

The Portal one is actually a surprise to me. Those are two of the best games I think I've ever played.

Throw in any Telltale or "point-and-click adventure" game for me.

EDIT:
Seeing the Wrestling Games thread, the Fire Pro series. I even agree with most of the praise as it's insanely detailed and being able to play as "fake" versions of real talent from different promotions/eras is fantastic, but the actual gameplay is frustrating as hell for me. No grapple button, strikes need to be lined up perfectly within a few pixels...

I personally LOVE Resident Evil 7, it's currently my #2 game of the year (behind NieR Automata) but from the sounds of it, you just have a problem with the genre Dama, not the game, so there's nothing really that I can say to try and convince you otherwise.

Yeah I think you're right Fazzle. I remember loving RE 2 as a kid because that one was a bit less difficult with more weapons whereas I wasn't a huge fan of RE 1 because I felt like I was spending too much time running for my life and not enough time being able to fight. Then when RE 4 came out it turned the whole series around for me because now I was a badass mowing down waves of enemies with a ton of ammo and items.

I'm disappointed because I loved the graphics and the sense of dread and unease I had while playing was pretty good, but I just couldn't get past the survival horror portion of it. Plus I kept having to read ahead on the strategy guide because I never knew when Jack was going to jump scare me and put me in a terrible situation. I'm almost glad I didn't make it to whatever her name was' area. She seemed freakier than him.

I've got a couple others and I think that's it:

Shadow of Colossus - Go around the world killing Titans. I beat the first one and never played it again.
Journey -  I played through most of it and I couldn't figure out why it people liked it so much.

Journey is just fucking boring to me.  Shadow of the Colossus is ok, but after the 3rd titan, I just didn't care anymore. Star Ocean Till the End of Time was also a snooze fest for me.

This. Like most true rasslin' fans, I am a fan of the N64 THQ series of WCW/WWE video games, and don't play many of the new WWE games. But lots of people tell me to play these Fire Pro games, and the rosters make it look so attractive. Then I play the game and it's so clunky that I don't even bother to finish a match. The match flow isn't smooth at all, it feels more like you're playing Pokemon than a rasslin' game.

The problem with Fire Pro is that it emulates wrestling too realistically. I have to hit my finisher at least three times in order to get the win.

That's actually one of the things I love about the series, that you can hit your finish at any time but it's not guaranteed to work unless you've beaten your opponent down quite a bit.

Mario 64 set the bar tremendously high when it came out, but even in 96, i thought the control was rough and the camera killed the experience for me.

Sonic CD is a colorful, lush game with two great soundtracks, and some creative boss battles.

That being said, its levels are complicated pains in the ass, lacking any of the streamlined stage design of the Genesis titles, and completely counterintuitive to either finding the special stages or going back in time to make a good future. A high percentage of the play time feels like a series of amateur Super Mario Maker levels by someone who felt you can't have enough platforms, spikes, and conveyor belts.

Yeah after finding a Past post, I have trouble building the momentum to travel in the past.  Other than the FMV in opening and closing, Sonic CD could have been a Genesis game.

I didn't. I'm just referring to the 2011 remaster which has widescreen, a better physics engine, and improved special stages. I can't even imagine how much more frustrating the 1993 release was.

I think I'm one of the very few people who had a Sega CD that didn't own it
