Title: Alice in Chains

New album to be released in September.

I saw Alice in Chains open for Velvet Revolver a few years back and I was pleasantly surprised with the new singer.

I like it. Bit long, but I like it.

luke-o, I agree. It's got a good sound, and vocally it's still AIC. The 7 minute running time is a bit much, though.

I can't check it out while at work, have to wait a bit, but does the new singer try to sound like Layne or does he have his own distinct voice that fits in to the AIC mold?

The latter.

Lushus, it depends on what you're listening to from him. I've found that any of the old Layne songs he does he tends to sound like a fan trying to do kareoke of AIC and therefore tries to emulate Layne.. which is forgivable, I guess, since how else would someone sing it? Though, seeing this guy get paid to sing "Angry Chair" , "Hate to Feel" and other songs written by Layne is kind of annoying.

I am still little pissed with these guys for going back on their word about only touring once with the old songs (2006) and then going on to do new things.. To me this is like an INXS thing.. you're not going to get big again so just let it die and move on to something new and different.

Also: here is the new track on youtube

Alice in Chains- A Looking In View * NEW SONG* (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnBEXTuUca0#lq-lq2-hq-vhq)

"Bored to tears" is one way to put it.. Okay, so I'm a little bitter.. but it does sound pretty cookie cutter, you have to admit.

The new guy isn't winning me over, though Jerry still sounds great.

He does. I would've liked if they just continued with the three of them.

He does. I would've liked if they just continued with the three of them.

I don't think Mike Inez (or is it Starr that is touring with them) would be suitable for any backing vocals. The vocals alone make Alice in Chains unique against other 90's era bands.

Their new video is ok, but the song is pretty good.  I'm glad they didn't change their vocal stylings too much.  Can't wait for the new album.

Alice in Chains died 7 years ago.  This is like Dave calling his band Nirvana.  Horrible.

The new vid is actually pretty good. Get a huge 90's grunge vibe from it, which I'm sure is what they wanted. The older dude looks like Handler Hearn from Dollhouse.

Still not sold on the vocalist, though. Could've been fine with just Jerry on vocals. :P

I downloaded the album from "one of those sites" last week.  It's pretty damn good, and definitely retains the AiC vocal stylings as well as their sound for the most part.  "A Looking in View" is probably my favorite track.

I never thought it'd happen but the new guy really is starting to grow on me. I've been listening to the album on YouTube ( http://www.youtube.com/user/FaygoVideo#grid/uploads (http://www.youtube.com/user/FaygoVideo#grid/uploads) ) and I think it's swayed me into the "gonna purchase" colbum.

So I bit and bought it off of iTunes. Much better than listening through YouTube. Damn, this really is a good album. I am actually really glad to be proved wrong about this being shit, and I should've known better.. Cantrell can make anything awesome.

I've listened to this several times, and it's honestly one of my favorite albums of the year.  It's lived up to my expectations, and I am very impressed with the new front man.  He can never replace Layne, but he does an excellent job.
Title: New Alice in Chains Song
Post by: Black Lushus on September 29, 2009, 01:55:18 PM
This is going to sound silly, but you can almost imagine Layne's vocals in there if you listen hard enough.  I'll need to give it maybe two more thorough listen throughs to accurately rate it, but I like it a lot so far.  Great stuff...definitely better than that shit Axl Rose gave us last year.

It's like this: DuVall is pretty good on the vocals, but he just doesn't have what Layne had.  It's not the same...it's a great album, absolutely it is, but it's definitely not the same.  Musically it is, that's why I said you can almost imagine Layne's vocals in there, but DuVall doesn't quite have the chops.
Title: New Alice in Chains Song
Post by: jerk of all trades on September 30, 2009, 06:58:02 AM
It's definitely not the same, I agree there. But it's a great album as a whole if you think of them as a new band. One thing I did after downloading the album was to change the artist name to just "AiC" in my iPod. I don't consider it the same type of Alice in Chains that I'd want to hear mixed in with the older stuff. I'm treating this as a completely different band even if 3/4 of it are the same.
Title: New Alice in Chains Song
Post by: Black Lushus on September 30, 2009, 07:03:18 AM
Yeah, I would probably do the same, that's a good take on it.  It's hard to call yourself the same band when a vocalist as iconic as Layne is no longer a part of the group.

I really like the new album. It's not Layne, obviously, bu the new lead singer sounds a lot like him on a number of the tracks. Overall, a good listen from start to finish.

I am at their show in Toronto right now. Unfortunately we missed MastodonN but we caught the entire Deftones set. They were fucking awesome, on fire like NBA Jam! I'd never seen them live before this. Just waiting for AIC to get on stage now.

That's true. Having listened to all their albums multiple times, I can't find one bad song. Even the great bands will tend to have a subpar song here or there, but I can't find any on their albums. Certainly, they have songs that blow away others, but they are pretty damn consistent with their music.

I have to say, as well, that I love that they have kept up with that mid-90's Grunge style for thier videos. When I try to think of another band who still does that kind of thing, I come up blank..

It's definitely fun to play on Guitar Hero.  I LOVED their late 90's hit, "Get Born Again".  The video was so fucking dark and twisted.  Fantastic riff and a killer bass line too.

Have to admit that both the song and video are both growing on me a lot.

The song has a vintage AiC vibe but also enough of a difference that it could stand on its own too.

So, 11 years ago, on day one, I picked up "Degradation Trip" by Jerry Cantrell.  I've enjoyed it ever since.  Yesterday, I was at a used CD store and came across a 2 disc version that I had never seen before called, "Degradation Trip Volumes 1 and 2".  Where has this thing been the past 11 years?  I've listened to it 3 times since yesterday afternoon, and it kicks ass.

Funny thing was Jerry Cantrell busting balls while presenting the band halfway through the set.  He kept asking Mike to say hello to the crowd, and he would wave but not say anything.  Jerry kept egging him on with COME ON MIKE, SAY HELLO TO THE PEOPLE!  Mike would stand there with his arms crossed, and shake his head no.  Jerry then said "he's been playing with us for 20 years, and will play on stage in front of thousands, but will not speak to a crowd.  I don't understand it."

Jerry spoke very fondly of Layne and Mike Starr toward the end of the set and looked like he was about to cry.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable evening, and I'd like to see them come nearby again.

I'm not all that crazy about the new album. It's got some good moments ("Scalpel" and "Choke" in particular), but a lot of it just sounds like "Black Give Way to Blue" B-Sides. Also, while I'm all for jabs at fundamentalists, calling your album "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here" is just lame.
Title: Re: Alice in Chains
Post by: jerk of all trades on May 29, 2013, 05:55:16 AM
It's not bad. On par with the last one, at least, IMO.. and that's fine. I really don't like the album title either, but mostly because it just doesn't flow as an album name, and is kinda long. Then again, I'm probably just used to old AIC one-word album titles. ;)

Saw AiC in Montreal a couple weeks back. Amazing show, as always.. though, this is the third time I've seen the "new" iteration of the band live, it was probably their best performance for me. They're really gelling together and hitting their stride as a band without their iconic vocalist.
