Title: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread
Post by: The King of Trash on March 19, 2016, 12:54:51 AM
For those of you familiar with BestFightOdds, they have a sister site called:

https://www.proboxingodds.com/

It's less about odds for me and more about what are the important fights coming up. It's a good roundup.

A few observations:

There are barely any worthwhile fights coming up. The fact that so many odds are lopsided, boxing has a matchmaking problem. Even the big names, when you're that established you shouldn't be fighting guys that you are a 15-1 favorite over. The few close fights between elite boxers are like Bradley/PacMan III, fuck that.

The big fights to me are really big though. Povetkin vs. Wilder is gonna be hot fire, and Thurman vs. Porter is a great fight (though that's three months away). Errol Spence and Anthony Joshua are both in good prospect fights as well, but those should be showcase fights. Fury/Wlad ehhh I'm not letting myself get up for that one.

To me though the biggest fight is Abraham vs. Gilberto Ramirez. Ramirez gets hit a lot, but he's got the chin to take it. Super exciting fighter who would probably get KO'd by GGG but it would be a fight that everyone would love to see. Plus the reach/height, chin, output and powerful body shots make him a live dog. He wouldn't back down, which has been a problem with a lot of past GGG opponents. The fact that he has no hype and a lot of people don't even know his name, the boxing marketing machine can use some work. But a big win against AA and people will know who he is.

Pac/Bradley 3 was the best of the trilogy, IMO.  Much more entertaining than I expected. It was too loud at the bar to really understand the post fight interviews, but did Kellerman drop Mayweather's name in there? I could have sworn I heard it.

Golovkin buzz sawed through Wade tonight on HBO almost no time at all. He was a -10,000 going into the fight. Don't see 100 to 1 odds so much anymore.

Will be interesting to see if Canelo takes the GGG fighter after he takes out Khan.  The money will be hard to turn down, even if it is essentially just to take an ass whooping.

Canelo/Khan is tonight. Worth watching. Probably starts around 11:15-11:30 at the earliest, but some fights on the undercard are worth checking out so you won't be disappointed if you head to the local boxing bar before the main event.

Khan has been chinny against guys who couldn't really punch so I think he's gonna get KTFO against someone who can.

Post by: The King of Trash on May 07, 2016, 11:09:47 AM
That's what most people think too, but I do think he'll use speed, footwork and smarts to make it a live fight for as long as it lasts. He is capable of winning a decision, but I agree that his chin will probably get wrecked at some point, I'm not sure he can survive for 12 rounds.

Well that fight went about as predictable as it could.  There were actually a couple shots earlier where I thought Khan might have been wobbled but he held up.  That KO shot though....wow.

I believe GGG is mandatory opponent for Canelo now or his title is stripped so talk is now cheap.

His haters were just ridiculous. Every opponent he took on later in his career was the guy that was finally going to "teach him a lesson" until Floyd schooled them in the ring, then suddenly it turned into "oh, well that guy was no good anyway"

Povetkin tested positive for meldonium and the Wilder fight is probably off. If you've seen his muscle mass increase over the last year, you'd have to assume he was on something.

Dude is the biggest phony with his tough guy act after taking down smaller dudes.

GGG doesn't need him. Chickanelo I is one of the biggest sellers in boxing but it was Cotto who sold that fight more than Amarillo. The Khan fight did between 450-580k which is good but not gawd status. GGG should face Danny Jacobs next, then unify the belts vs Saunders.

all these promoters are too afraid of having their top draw lose. But Canelo fighting a guy like that and getting that many buys will only add to his drawing power win or lose, imo.

That's why it's all about the MMA these days. Dana White is good for the sport in a competitive sense, getting the best out of the product.

ESPN.com boxing scribe Dan Rafael reported Wednesday afternoon that the two sides have agreed to finally settle their differences at the middleweight limit of 160 pounds, but they won’t get in the ring to oppose one another until the fall of 2017.

Both combatants are expected to fight “multiple” times between now and then, with Canelo aiming to fight up to two times to acclimate to 160 pounds, though he is currently a world titleholder at that weight.

This seems weird.

This being pay-per-view in the United States is a pretty tall ask for most fans, but of all the pay-per-view main events we’ve seen in 2016, counting those that are coming up, this is by far the most evenly-matched of the fights on paper

It's funny because Postol is a +500 underdog, so if that's the most evenly matched fight.

But I actually agree that this is competitive and worth watching. It says a lot though when two potentially cream of the crop undefeated boxers are fighting on PPV and nobody really knows who they are.

One of Floyd's fighters, Gervonta Davis is 16-0 with 15 KO's and fighting for a world title soon. He's good friends with Cody Garbrandt, which is cool. He also was trained by Cutty, which is cooler:

Quote
Davis has been training at Upton Boxing Center since he was five years old.[4] Davis is trained by Calvin Ford who was the inspiration for the character Dennis "Cutty" Wise on the hit HBO television series, The Wire.[5][6] Davis had a very successful amateur career, winning many National Championships.

Title: Re: Boxing 2016 Thread

The Chocolatito fight was a garbage decision, especially considering the fact that the headbutts didn't even really play a role in the scoring even though they clearly affected the fight. They took a point away after like 6 of them. But they also rewarded the headbutt, that early knockdown was not off of a punch, so it cancelled out and he got a bunch of free fuckin' headbutts.

https://youtu.be/8Rmt8MSOAgU

Go to 7:01 for a slow motion replay of the first round 'knockdown'. It's clear that he thrusts his head into him and that's what knocks him off balance, not the body shot. You can even see Chocolatito motion to the ref as he went down that it wasn't a punch, it was an illegal blow (but hard to get all that across with the language barrier). Immediately after that replay, they show it from another angle that makes the headbutt even clearer.

This was like the Holm/De Randamie of boxing reffing for me.

Sick ass fight. Could have gone either way if they'd reached the end of 12. Joshua looked burned out halfway through the fight. Found a second wind and made it happen. It'd be nice to see heavyweight relevant again.

It's kind of amazing all the casual boxing fans who weren't expecting this kind of one-sided beatdown and now view Canelo as this super unbeatable monster.  They are going to be in for a bit of a shock when Golovkin beats his face in this September.

I think Canelo can win and I don't base that on this fight in any way. Golovkin is slowing down.

I'm not outright picking him but I need to see what the odds are. Might bet on him.

If JCC Jr. had a different name, nobody would give a shit about him and he probably would have lost more often and never gotten some of these big fights. It was cool to see Canelo dominate but even I didn't think it would be that much of a mismatch. JCC Jr. looked like a punching bag.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2716206-former-ufc-fighter-tim-hague-in-icu-with-serious-brain-injury

Tim Hague got KO'd by a legit Canadian boxing prospect named Adam Braidwood and is in ICU right now. I hope he is okay, and this should serve as a warning for MMA fighters about what boxing can do to you if you don't respect the sport and take it seriously.

Braidwood used to play in the CFL and is 8-1, with that only loss occurring when he was doing it as a sidegig while playing for Edmonton. It was against Jordan Mein's dad of all people, who has a lifetime of experience. But since taking it seriously he's been looking like a decent prospect, knocking out some mid-level fighters. Even got that Mein win back. Not the kind of guy a traditional MMA fighter should step in there with.

https://youtu.be/-e-KdPHabUw

He's been training for a long time and was a legit athlete, will be interesting to see what he can do. He needs to work on his defence but he has time for that. For a guy that won Strongest Man competitions for Washington State football, he moves p. well and is really good at headhunting. Really, he should just learn how to sprawl and dominate MMA, he is 1-0 there.

At 17:25, about the last 25 seconds of the fourth round are insane and like something out of pro wrestling. It's worth watching but Braidwood gets hit with one shot and rather than retreat pulls a Max Holloway and laughs as he rolls with Eric's biggest shots, and the local Quebec crowd and announcers are overselling it all. Braidwood then throws one counter that had more impact than all those other shots combined and he damn near kills Martel-Bahoeli to end the round. He finished the job in Round 5.

That's how you put someone over. That kind of personality and backing it up in the ring right after, that sells PPV's. Hopefully he keeps winning and they don't throw him to the wolves too soon.

Hague was finished by TKO in boxing/mma FIVE times in the past 20 months. He should not have taken this fight, no matter who you want to blame. In this fight alone, he was knocked down FIVE times, once per minute it lasted.

When you come into a fight with that kind of brain damage, and then you take that kind of punishment in one night...

Hague died.  RIP

I watched the clip of the final minute of the fight, it's on youtube.  The ref is kind of in the way and the camera angle isn't great.....it's kind of a quick uppercut I think that put him out.  I've seen way more brutal looking KO's....but I guess he'd been taking hard shots all fight and shouldn't have been in there in the first place.

Edmonton's athletic commission deserves a lot of blame here.  From all accounts Hague should not have been cleared with all his concussions (that's why he was no longer in UFC) and recent TKOs

Also, the guy was a 4th grade English teacher and by all accounts a great guy.  This is so sad

ESPN is airing major fights for the first time in at least a decade. Pacquaio tries to resurrect his box officeabilty tonight. Back to back cards on Fri/Sat August 5/6 with Vasyl Lomachenko headlining on the 6th. The Terence Crawford-Julius Indongo unification fight is on Aug 19.

Deadspin posted an article today making fun of big fights happening on ESPN rather than HBO, Showtime, or ppv (apparently out of the same mouth that also pokes fun at major ppv events). I disagree. I think boxing has needed to get back to more cable/network fights for several years. I'm biased because I want to watch more boxing. But I do think that PBC airing on networks and cable, Golden Boy doing more ESPN dates, and now Top Rank moving their big names to ESPN is good for boxing.

I agree completely with what you've said and don't understand why anyone would complain about this.

Also, HBO doesn't air HBO quality fights themselves anymore. Supposedly they don't have the budget to do it, but they turned into mismatch central the last few years before this one. Showtime still shows big fights though. The lack of HBO having a budget creates a climate where fans aren't going to tolerate mismatches and where promoters are forced to have quality fights. The PBC concept is running out of money too, so I'm interested to see what happens when it's gone.

I kinda agree with Stephen A. Smith as far as that went too. The fighters gave us everything they had and that's what makes the sport great. You kinda have to ignore what the judge says when everyone knows what happened, and I know it's not easy to do that, but that's the approach I like to take. It was a great fight and the judge didn't even ruin it honestly, it doesn't even taint what I watched. Golovkin walked Canelo down and put it on him, end of story. Only better middleweight in history is Hagler, who also got fucked. Nothing will change my mind, don't care what happens in six months, Golovkin might be too old then.

There were a few swing rounds at the beginning and end of the fight that I thought could have gone to Canelo, but Gennady was so dominant in the middle portion of the fight that I don't see how anyone couldn't give him rounds 4-10.  I thought Canelo had the better looking shots (talking about 3 or 4 nice ones) but he was back pedaling the entire fight and was too content to stay on the ropes and wait for a counter-strike that was rarely available.  The times he did land it looked good, but when Gennady is aggressively jabbing you to death and hitting a couple of good shots on his own for seven straight rounds, I don't see how you can say Canelo won the round, let alone the fight.

And Adelaide Byrd shouldn't even be allowed to serve drinks in an arena, let alone judge another match.  909 is right that this was probably an inside job and everyone but the fighters and their camps were in on it.  You know everyone got a piece of this pie.  You could probably build a house with the bricks of cash that they banked off of this fight.

They don't have USADA rules though so the fight is still on. He's blaming Mexican Cowmeat btw.

The Mexican meat is a legit excuse because this has happened numerous times.

Yeah the NFL warned their players about it:

Does he gain an advantage from eating these based futuristic steroid meats?

I assume he does, because let's be realistic. Canelo isn't eating sewer meat that they inject with all kinds of garbage unless it has some kind of athletic benefit. He has far too much money for that.

Apparently 58 of every 200 slaughterhouses in Mexico produce contaminated meat.

Anyone watch the Top Rank Boxing fight on ESPN the other week?  Oscar Valdez fought half the fight with a broken jaw but still won.  Meanwhile, Scott Quigg (who came in overweight and was ineligible to win the title) suffered a broken nose himself.  Just a filthy, grinding fight in the rain.

I think he has a last ditch hearing on April 10 to prove that it came from the beef, although it doesn't look like they are confident of success considering that they are offering refunds to the fight.

Nevada wants to suspend him for a year. They also stated in a formal complaint that he is guilty of cheating.

Important to note it's cancelled because Canelo withdrew from the fight. I'd say his team is hoping they can clear this up and avoid a suspension so this was the smarter play.

Linares might've retained the title without that perfect punch to the liver. I think he deserves a rematch if he wants one.

I agree. I wish he pounced on Lomachenko in round 7, after the knockdown the previous round cause Loma was a bit hesitant for a bit after that till he got his second wind back. The cards were pretty close after 9 too (they had a draw).

I thought Gassiev would win but it did not surprise me that Usyk won as he looked excellent against Breidis.

With that said, I'd still have about half a dozen boxers comfortably over him.
Title: Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread
Post by: Firmino of the 909 on July 21, 2018, 10:45:50 AM
Usyk also barely beat Breidis.

I would rate Golovkin, Lomachenko, Spence, Crawford, Sor Rungvisai, and Joshua as being better.

Canelo, too.  I've watched more boxing this year than I have in years and years.  As someone who is used to judging MMA and kickboxing it has been interesting getting used to judging fights in boxing.

He’s beaten better opponents than Crawford, fights everywhere, and other than great power is the total package in the ring. His stamina is insane. I don’t think the other guys can fight on the road like he does.

So close.  I'm not mad at the decision but I thought GGG won.  Announcers seemed biased in favor of Canelo.
Title: Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread
Post by: NoCalMike on September 15, 2018, 03:13:43 PM
GGG won the damn fight. It was 12 rounds of HBO guys being fascinated that Canelo was doing better than the 1st fight.  Canelo was doing better early in the fight than he did the first time around, but GGG rallied and eventually pulled away.

Not to mention a judge giving Canelo the 12th is assanine.
Title: Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread
Post by: AA484 on September 15, 2018, 03:16:41 PM
People remember the rounds GGG won more than the ones Canelo won but they still score the same.  I'm going to rewatch and make another judgment but I think it's only going to cement my opinion that GGG won it.
Title: Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread
Post by: NoCalMike on September 15, 2018, 03:25:01 PM
Based on immediate memory, I had it even through six. Then GGG started landing combos and seemed to rock Canelo good each round from that point out.  Canelo did most of his best work in the first few rounds.

I didn't watch it but the opinion seems to be solidly behind GGG winning the fight. There's a lot of talk about crooked judges helping Canelo win.
Title: Re: Boxing 2016-2017 Thread
Post by: AA484 on September 16, 2018, 04:54:17 AM
Rewatched it.  115-114.  I feel dirty giving Round 1 10-10 so if I had a gun to my head I'd go Canelo.  That would make it 114-114, draw lol.

Announcers sucked.  Seemed biased in favor of Canelo early on.  GGG did better early and Canelo did better late than I had initially judged.

Manny has to be a top ten fighter ever at this point. He's supposed to be losing to the kinds of guys he fought last night, not beating them soundly. Scorecards said differently but that was a rather wide decision I thought.
