Initial thoughts: the 2016 version of this card was infinitely better and stronger from not only a name but matchup perspective. All of the pressure is on GSP to draw like he use to.

This isn't doing well in terms of tickets. But based on the hype I see around casuals in my own life, I think this will pop a decent buyrate. GSP still seems to be a relevant name in Canada, even four years later.

Joanna is catching a lot of heat for bringing up Rose's family history and mental illness. I've thought her personality was pretty manufactured for a while and that we saw a glimpse of the real her on TUF which was pretty much a cunt. I think Rose is going to get killed but I'm rooting for the upset here.

OSP kinda sucks imo. 205 is a joke, though.

Post by: Lord of The Curry on October 26, 2017, 07:10:00 AM
OSP given favorable matchups can be okay but I think UFC is looking at this fight and getting flashbacks to how bad he look getting outgrappled by Bader and seeing the chance that Anderson can repeat the same gameplan.

Feels like OSP is getting a wrestling push thru the Von Flue Choke so I'm gonna roll with that being the way the fight is finished.

Duffy's only UFC loss was to Poirier and that wasn't really a blowout. Don't really know what Vick is going to bring to the table that he hasn't seen before and Vick has been tagged clean in quite a few fights. I think El Duffo knocks him out.

Post by: NoCalMike on November 04, 2017, 02:29:10 PM
JJ did seem an extra level of ****y going into this fight, but I honestly felt it was just part of her hyping the fight.

JJ always starts slow and invites her opponent in during fights. It finally cost her.

Rose just shook up the entire division.  It's now wide open.

JJ has been in some wars, and has experienced a lot of dominant performances. Gotta wonder where she will be mentally after this fight.  She tapped to strikes. Wow.

TJ comes back from certain death at the end of round #1 to win with a KO of his own. Wow. Ludwig a bit classless after the fight though. Dude STFU and GTFO out of the cage.

The Cody-Cruz-TJ triangle is certainly a good story and situation to get a lot of good fights out of.

If TJ indeed fights Mighty Mouse next, I could see them doing a Cody vs. Cruz rematch for title fight rights?

Awesome night of fights. I think anyone in the top 5 would have crushed either guy tonight in the main event.

Team alpha male always comes off like a tool factory when they start bitching about TJ. So I was most happy with that result.

Seeing GSP in there tonight makes me wish even more he had moved up in his prime to fight Silva. Or at least done the catch weight at 180lbs.  He didn't look like the same guy in there and it seems obvious he sort of cherry-picked the guy he felt was the weakest champ since the pre-Rich Franklin days of that weight division.

Title: Re: UFC 217
Post by: Lord of The Curry on November 06, 2017, 12:47:42 AM
I think the hype behind a Bisping win was more people throwing shade at GSP moving up in weight after 4 years on the shelf more then praise for the champion. We aren't far removed from Bisping getting routed by Tim Kennedy and struggling badly with Thales Leites and CB Dolloway and like 909 mentioned the decisions in the Hendo and Silva fights are highly questionable.
Title: Re: UFC 217
Post by: HSJ on November 06, 2017, 03:15:56 AM
I’m shocked that Rose put down Joanna Champion but I think it will leave everyone better off in the long run. Love her or hate her, Joanna carried herself like a star and was a good champion. This loss shakes things up, gives Rose some attention and will lead to a rematch that I think joanna will come into more focused and regain her belt. It also leaves the other contenders in a good spot since Karolina beat Rose not too long ago.
Title: Re: UFC 217
Post by: Lord of The Curry on November 06, 2017, 04:01:10 AM
Unfortunately for Karolina despite her being the last person to beat Rose she's gone 1-2 since and a champion who's had the run JJ had pretty much guarantees an immediate rematch.

And even though I'm not shitting on Joanna for tapping to strikes like a lot of people are there's some pretty delicious irony in her blasting Rose for lack of mental toughness and quitting less then 2 minutes into what was supposedly going to be the easiest title defense she's ever had.
Title: Re: UFC 217
Post by: AA484 on November 06, 2017, 04:07:22 AM
I agree with HSJ that Joanna takes the belt back in a rematch.  I Loved Dillashaw beating Garbrandt and yelling in his face even though that's not the type of thing I'll normally cheer for.

Title: Re: UFC 217
Post by: Lord of The Curry on November 06, 2017, 06:11:38 AM
I think there's a few things that played into the anti-Dillashaw crowd though I could be reaching.....

- TJ looked like a serious douche in the season of TUF he was on and the UFC made sure the way the show was edited showed it then he got KO'd by Dodson in the finale
- The PPV that he beat Barao on did shit numbers and the rematch was on a Fox card that had nil marketing put behind it
- Cruz embarrassed him in the pre-fight banter going into their showdown
Title: Re: UFC 217
Post by: Zetterberg is Go on November 06, 2017, 08:55:34 AM
Entirely possible on all counts. Guess I was expecting a closer split considering Cody isn't exactly pristine himself.
Title: Re: UFC 217

That snake in the grass stuff was very effective in making TJ a heel.
Title: Re: UFC 217
Post by: Cool, Bad, & Handsome on November 06, 2017, 09:28:27 AM
I also forgot most fans will only know Cody as what the marketing has shown of him. He's the guy who outright beat the old dominant force in the division for the title and celebrated that moment with a child who survived cancer. He's one of the few guys that didn't let Conor just shit on him verbally like most small guys do. Stuff like that goes a long way when you combine the snake in the grass stuff.

I saw it the exact opposite way. Seemed like Cody and the rest of his coaches wouldn’t shut up about TJ leaving the team. They came off like jilted lovers that couldn’t get over a break up. They’d just keep bringing it up over and over and over again. TJ came off way better on TUF for me.
