Full Final Gate lineup is out:
December 23, 2018
Fukuoka, Fukuoka Kokusai Center
The Final Gate 2018
Dragon Gate Network Live 5PM

1. Kagetora, U-T, “brother” YASSHI, Problem Dragon vs. Jason Lee, Kaito Ishida, Shachihoko Boy, Dragon Dia
2. Shun Skywalker, Hyo Watanabe, Yuki Yoshioka, Kota Minoura vs. Ryo Saito, Don Fujii, Gamma, K-ness.
3. Masaaki Mochizuki vs. Daga
4. International Special Tag Match: Naruki Doi, Masato Yoshino vs. Flamita, Bandido
5. Open the Triangle Gate Championship Match: Kzy, Susumu Yokosuka, Genki Horiguchi vs. Takashi Yoshida, Yasushi Kanda, KAZMA SAKAMOTO
6. Open the Twin Gate Championship Match: YAMATO, BxB Hulk vs. Big R Shimizu, Ben-K
7. Mascara contra Caballera: Dragon Kid vs. Eita
---

I'm curious about DK losing the mask or not but it feels like a weak main event.

If anyone has any other resources they think should be added to the top post go ahead and post them. Puroresu Spirit dying really got rid of the best one stop place for puro cards and results, so I don't know if there's any place that's stepped up since then.

Combination of Kevin Kelly, Rocky Romero and Excalibur for tonight's Tag League final. I like the sound of it.

added dramaticddt.

So after the WTL Finals we've got Ospreay Vs Ibushi and it looks like GOD VS LIJ Vs Bucks. The singles match should be excellent and the tag match will probably be good but as much as I love LIJ I'm just bored to death with the NJPW tag team scene. We've seen all these teams go at it multiple times and forcing them into a multi-man match (just like the junior tag division!) feels lazy.

Makabe making the save for Okada/Tana is somewhat interesting. I haven't been a fan at all of them having Okada/Tana losing every match where they've tagged together but if it leads to something interesting like CHAOS booting Okada out for being a chump and him joining a mega-faces stable with Tana/Makabe/KUSHIDA/Honma/etc that'd be kinda fun. And then in a couple years he can go dick heel and betray them.

I'm wondering if on the Road to WK shows they have GOD defend the 6 man titles and lose to have another title match at WK.

I loved the pairing of Finley and Juice and would love to see them continue on as a team. They have great chemistry, and if they want to throw them into a 6 man match, put Cobb with them. That would be a great combination as they are all great workers.
Title: Re: Puroresu Love & Resources V3
Post by: cobainwasmurdered on December 09, 2018, 10:13:08 AM
That would work for me but I feel like the 6 man belts have become even more of an afterthought than they were when they started up. When they had 12 or more champions in the first year alone it really hurt the belts. I think they should use the 6-man titles as a house show draw and leave it off the big shows entirely. That'd make it kind of unique.

Judging from the Road To cards, I guess Chaos is going to blow up entirely and that Yano will join Makabe again.

NJ announced two US shows early next year. LA on 1/30 and North Carolina on 2/1.
Title: Re: Puroresu Love & Resources V3
Post by: Slayer on December 12, 2018, 09:23:17 AM
So with all the expected talk about WK coming up, I figure I'd remind everyone how XMas/New Years is generally huge not just for NJ but nearly every puro fed has some major show during the time period.  Figure I'd compile them together here as they're all probably good starting points for people looking to jump into a new fed for the new year (except Dragon Gate, as I'll explain below).

12/16 - NOAH Great Voyage in Yokohama 2018 Vol 2 - Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium
Main Event: GHC Hwt Title - Takashi Sugiura (V7) vs. Kaito Kiyomiya (Global League Winner)
Full Card (https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dt4ursQX4AAVDjK.jpg:large)
A minor exception as NOAH is holding their big closing show this weekend, a little earlier than the normal last week of the year shows they've run in the past.

12/18 - Dragon Gate last Korakuen Hall show of the year
Main Event: Doi Darts match (Dragon Kid/K-Ness/Ben-K/Kazma/Kai vs. BxB Hulk/“brother” YASSHI/Yuki Yoshioka/Naruki Doi/Dragon Dia)
DG's annual last Korakuen show of the year is always fun because of the randomized Doi Darts match (picked at the previous Korakuen show) and the post-match when all the wrestlers (well, all the faces) address the crowd to talk about their highs/lows from the previous year and hopes for next year.

12/23 - Dragon Gate Final Gate 2018 - Fukuoka Kokusai Center
Main Event: Mask vs. Hair - Dragon Kid vs. Eita
Full Card (http://culturecrossfire.com/forums/index.php?topic=13739.msg989126#msg989126) (CWM's post above)
Final Gate truly closes out the year for Dragon Gate as for all intents and purposes they take the first few months of the new year "off".  They still hold shows and have title matches in their standard smaller venues like Korakuen, Hakata Star Lanes and Kyoto KBS (the stained glass building) but Dead or Alive, their first proper big show of the year, isn't until the first weekend in May

12/28 - DDT D-Oh Grand Prix Finals - Korakuen Hall
Main Event & Full Card TBD
In the last Puro thread I mentioned the King of DDT being like DDT's G1 except I was wrong, that's more their NJ Cup (single elim tournament) where this is their G1 (two block round-robin series with block winners facing in the finals).  ATM there's still a couple block shows to go with no clear picture of the finals but most any combo should be good

1/2 - AJPW New Year Wars - Korakuen Hall
Main Event: AJPW Tag Titles - Violence Giants (Suwama/Shuji Ishikawa) (V4) vs. The Bombers (Joe Doering/Dylan James)
Semi Main: AJPW Junior Title - Koji Iwamoto (V1) vs. Yusuka Okada

1/3 - AJPW New Year Wars - Korakuen Hall
Main Event: AJPW Triple Crown - Kento Miyahara (V1) vs. Kai
Semi Main: All Asia Tag Titles - NEXTREAM (Naoya Nomura/Yuma Aoyagi) vs. Takao Omori/Black Menso~Re

1/4 - TJPW - Korakuen Hall
(Noon JST/7PM PST/10PM EST, so no conflict with WK!)
TJPW is the main joshi fed that I watch, albeit mostly because it's already included under my DDTU subscription and all the DDT cross-promotion makes it easier for me to follow vs the independent joshi promotions like Stardom or Ice Ribbon.  Regardless, should be a good appetizer before WK

If anyone knows of any other big XMas/NY cards coming up for the other feds (I'm sure CWM will bring up BJPW) feel free to throw them out

Some really interesting stuff coming up it looks like. I'd be down with seeing Kiyomiya winning the GHC Belt in NOAH.

Meltzer had some notes on NJPW's relationship with ROH/IMPACT/MLW and AEW (the potential Elite company)
Quote
Obviously both AEW and ROH will want a business relationship with New Japan. Everyone in U.S. independent wrestling, including Impact and MLW would like that relationship for obvious reasons. New Japan has blocked its talent from working for Impact, even though Don Callis is an announcer for New Japan, because of the ROH relationship. They have not blocked people from working for MLW. New Japan could work with both AEW and ROH. The ball really is in their court. The key talent involved want to continue with New Japan. ROH losing the New Japan relationship to AEW would be a huge blow, but that won’t happen now, because they’ve got a sold out Madison Square Garden joint promotion on 4/6. But in 2019, depending if AEW can get off the ground, a lot could change.

NJPW having all these companies by the balls is pretty funny.

I finally watched the 12/4 DG show and I found it pretty enjoyable. Shun Skywalker Vs UT and PAC Vs Yoshino were the standouts. Seeing U-T finally making some progress as a worker again after he basically vanished after the Millenials unit disbanded is really great. Shun has a lot of potential as well, although it's hard to get too excited about any young guy in DG with their history of handling young talent.

PAC looked a ton better in this match than the Flamita singles. Much better at balancing the heel work and having a good DG style match. I'm feeling a lot better about him having a good run with the belt now and I think he'll do well.

I also watched the finals of the NJPW WTL and Goto/Ibushi. The tag league finals I thought was only average but Goto/Ibushi was great as you'd hope for from those two. It's a damn shame that Goto is going to be at BEST an after-thought at WK when he's been so good this year.
Title: Re: Puroresu Love & Resources V3
Post by: Big Beard Booty Daddy on December 15, 2018, 07:28:48 AM
Yeah, in all the talk of Ishii being MVP of the G1, and rightfully so, and Tanahashi's return story, Goto has been lost in the shuffle. He's put on some great matches, and he's always there to deliver a really good match. I think once the whole The Elite issue clears up, we'll see other guys with a chance to shine.

The final DDT Grand Prix show in Nagoya this morning was a fun watch.  Matches to check out included a multi-man with special guest Ultimo Dragon working with two of his former students (Toru Owashi and Masa Takanashi) and the A-block final of Harashima vs. Go Shiozaki.

Grand Prix finals are set for the 12/28 Korakuen Hall show

Spoiler: show

A-Block winner Go Shiozaki vs B-Block winner Konosuke Takeshita

To add to my list above, there's also another DDT Korakuen Hall show on 1/3 (evening show, with All Japan as the morning show) with Daisuke Sasaki likely defending the KOD title against a returning Naomi Yoshimura

speaking of injuries, BxB Hulk injured his neck during the Doi Darts match on Tuesday and so for the second year in a row the Twin Gate belts have been vacated right before Final Gate

Kagetora is stepping in as Yamato's new partner against Big Ben, and to make things more interesting DG has also added Speed Muscle and made it a three-way match for the vacant belts

yeah that's a really hard one there. DG doesn't need to lose any more stars so it's hard for them but the guy needs to think about himself for once. He's put himself through a lot and the last few injuries had already taken a lot out of him physically as it was.

Maybe I'm wrong (I'm sure I'm missing something) but it feels like Genki might be one of the few guys in DG to still have a pretty decent injury history of the older workers and he's still pretty beaten up.

I don't recall that.

Anyway it will be interesting if both Omega and Kushida are kept to that end of the month contract, meaning if either are WWE bound, it will be hard to do a debut in the Rumble itself. They likely will just have Kushida do the token ringside appearance at the Phoenix NXT Takeover.
I'm not convinced Omega is WWE bound quite yet, though. Tuesday's AEW press conference might clear up some stuff with all that. Khan has $$$ to throw around and I would guess that means a big offer to Omega, maybe even matching whatever deal WWE threw at him.

KUSHIDA said he will be with NJPW until the end of his deal.

Omega did a similar thing when he lost to Okada at the Dome. He took about a month off after saying he had to rethink if he wanted to still be in NJPW, etc.

Juice should be getting a really big push as he's the most over gaijin with the Japanese fans and has a lot of charisma and he can promo. He's got a crazy amount of upside.

KUSHIDA leaving is very interesting. I didn't think he was going to so I admit I was wrong. Hopefully he got WWE to agree to give him a good spot and they're desperate enough to put him on tv *SMACKDOWN PLEASE) instead of just 205/NXT. Give me a Tozawa/Kushida tag team (as one idea) competing against new day/usos/bar and I'd be going nuts. I don't know how great KUSHIDA's english is whereas Tozawa's english is excellent which is why i suggest a team.

KUSHIDA's english is actually pretty good. He did a podcast with Colt Cabana not too long ago. He also has family in North America which I imagine weighed in his decision to join WWE.

Damn this is pretty big even if a lot of newer fans only know him as a weird dude who barely does anything. He debuted in 1986! I think only Liger has a longer tenure with the company than him as far as wrestlers.

I know a lot of ppl aren't fans of Iizuka, but I loved his heel turn. It came so far out of left field and him going from this Nagata'esque perennial babyface to a missing link style lunatic heel was just a great revitalization for his career, IMO.

Also, do you ever watch "The Recount" on NJ's YouTube? They're doing multi-part histories, in English, of basically every stable in the promotion right now. Here's the start to the CHAOS one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjmVQpBy62M

I'd love to see them do Recounts for old stables like CTU and Team 2000.
Title: Re: Puroresu Love & Resources V3
Post by: cobainwasmurdered on January 07, 2019, 07:23:35 AM
I liked the heel run in that it did a lot to cover up his faults and was good for his character. He also usually stayed in the lower card too. As a worker he wasn't very good but then he'd also been going for 25 years or so at that point so it's not shocking.

I'd love to see unit histories for the older stables yeah.
Title: Re: Puroresu Love & Resources V3
Post by: Big Beard Booty Daddy on January 07, 2019, 07:49:10 AM
The Recount has been a lot of fun. My wife got into NJPW last year, and watching them with her has been great. She's learned a lot from them.

I wasn't around for most of Iizuka, but I've enjoyed his heel run. He's a perfect fit for Suzuki-gun, and it's a fun character at the perfect level of the card.

Also, Yuji Nagata had a great run last year, and it's awesome to see him getting some more time this year with a possible feud with Ishii. Those are going to be great matches. I'd love to see him work with Juice and Ospreay to help elevate them even more.

Karl Fredericks is a West Coast mainstay and NJPW Dojo guy, as are Clark Connors and Alex Coughlin.

Great O-Kharn is a British wrestler they are bringing in for this tour and making his NJPW debut.

Cobb vs Brody King is going to be great.

Tracy Willams just signed to ROH and is part of Juice's new group there.

They were supposed to have Cobb vs Goto and Ishii vs Nagata on the tour.

Yeah, Meltzer also speculated if this will affect the MSG show. I have no idea of the turnaround time between filing for a visa and actually receiving it but I'm sure when and if the government reopens, the process can be expedited.

Tracy Willams just signed to ROH and is part of Juice's new group there.

I'm very familiar with Hot Sauce Tracy Williams from going to EVOLVE and Beyond shows. And being in the same vegan coffee shop with him before a Beyond show.

I could've swore I had a shitfaced photo with Tracy Williams on Facebook but all I could find was a shitfaced photo of me wearing the shirt I bought from Tracy Williams with an annoyed Santana from LAX.

I figured you would know him from his Beyond work. Just was pointing it out for others that might not be familiar with him.

The idea of these shows from the start, though, was to be a showcase for the American Dojo and the work Shibata has done.

There's going to be an insane backlog and a wrestling company isn't going to be a top priority. If the shutdown goes much longer there's a real risk of some of them not getting cleared. I really hope that doesn't happen since it would be awful for NJPW...and because of the hundreds of thousands of people not getting paid. Mostly that.

Watched Final Gate and some other DG from December and they seem to be slowly getting back on track. I really like some of the new/returning talent they've got. DAGA, Dragon Dia, and PAC are all breaths of fresh air. Bandido and Flamita being on the shows more has also helped. They've got some promising young guys and hopefully they'll actually push them instead of just having them endlessly tread water like they've done in the past.

I also watched the Kaito Kiyomiya title win in NOAH. I can't believe a 22 year old is the champion in NOAH! That's like half the age of what I expect from them. The match was good enough and hopefully they continue the youth movement they've been doing the last couple years. It looked like they drew a decent house for the show which was really good to see.

Just finished watching Tana-Kushida.

First of all, what a great match.

Secondly, smart angle to clear Tana out of the ring so Kushida could give his speech.

@STRIGGA
LIDET has a division that has been producing pro-wrestling events in the past. That. includes DDT's DNA brand, AAA's shows in Japan, the reivial of the Differ Cup and Riki Choshu's POWER HALL. Interestingly enough Choshu also is the chairman of the board of directors at LIDET.

more notes on NOAH from an article from Weekly Pro Wrestling posted to reddit:
`new logo/ring mat/general branding from March 10th (Yokohama show); green will no longer be used as a motif (except for the annual Misawa memorial shows)
`while some relationships may continue temporarily, the general order is to cease cooperation with other organisations. they aim to create a sense of exclusivity to their shows
`contract renewal of talent will occur this month
`touring schedule is to be reduced - only 2 big shows and 10 korakuens of a year
`they are aiming for 'second place' in Japan
`the stated plan is not to sell NOAH again, even to talent within the company - it will either succeed now under LIDET or fold ('I don't think Misawa would want it to continue in that state.')
----

Losing the green mat is lame because it really distinguished NOAH and was a cool look. Changing it is a silly attempt to put their own stamp on the company. Cutting back shows is probably for the best but a really bad sign. Claiming that Misawa wouldn't want them to continue in "that state" is pretty stupid. We're talking about a guy who literally worked himself to death.

Not working with other companies only works if you have a roster that can draw on its own. NOAH has been trying that ever since they stopped working with NJPW and it hasnt been working very well. I wouldn't be surprised to see some talent leave with all of this. I hope this doesn't lead to yet another deal where we get half a dozen splinter companies, because that isn't good for anyone.

awful news as koab's and my favourite young lion Katsuya Kitamura has left njpw. He'd been out for a long time with injuries so it's not a big shock. Really loved this guy as he was going to be the new Nakanishi/Goldberg and showed a ton of potential and charisma.

I watched Kai/Miyahara, Violent Giants Vs Sekimoto/Okabayashi, and Dragon Gate up through 1/16 (the end of the rookie tourny).

AJPW/BJPW is really great so far this year. Enjoying them the last few months more than I have NJPW. Just a lot of great clubbering going on. Miyahara has great charisma and they've got a lot of big dudes that love to beat the crap out of each other in both companies. What's not to love?

Dragon Gate is starting to click for me again after a long dry spell. I enjoyed the rookie tournament a lot. Most of the guys were impressive and I think Shun Skywalker has the potential to be a big star for them. The crowd seemed to be really into the idea of him and vs Ben-K. KAI (and Hiroshi Yamato) working for Dragon Gate has been fun and I'm happy to see he's joining a unit and sticking around.

I doubt he will but I hope KZY beats PAC for the Dream Gate. I still think he should have beaten Mochizuki and gotten a run when they first turned him face, just gone all in on a promising young guy. Speaking of Mochizuki, i love that he always loses his anniversary match and seeing Shuji Kondo back was crazy. I have the match with Owashi back but haven't watched it yet.

For the old school TORYUMON fans:

https://rutube.ru/video/person/1324972/
Don Fujii, Genki Horiguchi, Susumu Yokosuka & Ryo Saito vs. YOSSINO, YASSINI, Machine #2 & Owashi

Toryumon Vs T2P, it's the 20th anniversary of the company's founding so we're getting NOSTALGIA! Yagi is even reffing!

So thanks to a rare bout of insomnia I actually caught the Dream Gate match this morning

Going into this match, my opinion was that this Kzy title shot was mistimed and either result would be a disappointment: Either the PAC reign gets cut short after one defense at a time when DG needs a strong heel champion (as DG is generally its best when the heel faction is good), or Kzy loses another DG title shot and all the momentum he's picked up since starting Natural Vibes.

That being said, the match was very exciting and a must watch

Spoiler: show
After a vicious AF looking 2nd-rope tombstone and the Black Arrow, PAC added the first key to his belt

Speaking of disappointments, I did not know that this was the final DG show ever at Hakata Star Lanes because the facility is closing down next month, WTF

Never seen a NJPW crowd deader for a title change, and it's not because he's a heel because they reacted big to all the other heel wins. I liked the match although the selling was really spotty. Tanahashi did everything he could to make White look good but the crowd really wasn't getting into the near falls the way they should have been. I think Okada, Tanahashi, Naito and Ibushi are so hot with the fans they'll keep moving a ton of tickets (and that's basically what I credit NJPW's success to right now) but if they keep were to keep White on top it wouldn't be a great idea.

Ibushi announcing he's staying with NJPW and is going to be in the NJ Cup is the best news I've seen for the company this year easily.

I’ve been aonout of the NJPW loop that I didn’t realize this was happening until I saw the result this morning.  Wonder if this is going to be a brief reign to take them through MSG as word came out yesterday that if Kenny stayed the plan was to retain at the Dome and drop the belt back to Olaf’s at MSG.

I’d have to assume the plans get back on track with this, though it would seem odd for White to drop the belt that quickly now.

I figured they were going to put the belt on White before the end of the year but I didn't think it was going to be this soon. I can see them giving it back to Okada and him getting his win back.

Ibushi staying with the company might build him enough good will to give them an extended push throughout the year.

I'm assuming Jay White will drop it to Okada at MSG before getting a longer run before the end of the year.

Although it'd be weird to have that many IWGP Title changes in a short period.

Okada and Tanahashi have both wanted a one on one match in the US. Naito keeps talking about being the first IC/World Title holder. Those 2 matches will probably be what happens at MSG (White vs Naito)

I could see that for sure....another Okada and Tanahashi classic would be perfect for MSG.

The way they put Ibushi out there at the last show too as entering the NJ Cup makes me think, though, that they may have Ibushi and White instead at MSG. And I would not be totally shocked to see Ibushi go over since he just signed what is basically an exclusive New Japan contract (preventing him from going to AEW at all). There is probably a title run in there as a caveat that he signed.

The White run to me seems very premature but I get they really need and want to fill holes with Omega, etc, gone. It just seems so pretentious and frankly, the match itself with White/Tanahashi didn't really blow me away in terms of a starmaking situation. That is what I think doesn't grab me with White. He is a solid worker no doubt but he doesn't have that extra added fire or uniqueness  to really blow people away on a big stage. He's getting there as the Okada match at WK was decent, but its going to take time.

It was announced that the winner of the NJ Cup will get the title shot at the MSG show. Meltzer believes it will be Okada, Naito, or Ibushi winning. Kenny said in his interview that he was supposed to win the title back at the MSG show, so they might have the winner of the Cup take the title, which could be Okada getting his win back.

There's no way he was going to win, but Shota Umino took it to ZSJ on ROH/NJPW Honor Rising. Holy shit is Umino fantastic. That kid is going to be a star. He started the match by knocking Taka out before the bell and went hold for hold with ZSJ for the first 5 minutes. He went nearly 15 minutes with one of the best technical wrestlers in the world, and didn't look out of place at all. The fans popped for him like they were watching Okada. Hell of a match.

All Japan announced the blocks for this year’s Champion Carnival, which starts on April 4 and runs through April 29.
Block A has Kento Miyahara, Kengo Mashimo, Yuma Aoyagi, Zeus, Gianni Valletta, Ryouji Sai, Dylan James, Shuji Ishikawa,Yuji Okabayashi
Block B has Joe Doering, Jake Lee, Naoya Nomura, Yoshitatsu, Daichi Hashimoto, Sam Adonis, Suwama, Takashi Yoshida, Joel Redman

This is a step down from last years I think since they lost SHINGO,  but still interesting. Yoshida for those who don't know is the unmasked CYBER KONG of Dragon Gate.

At the risk of triggering a wave of angry pms from a certain someone, the NJ Cup is a snapshot of a lot of what I complain about with NJPW.

They jammed basically everyone on the roster into this even guys who retired from the G1 (Nagata, Nakanishi, Tenzan) and guys who should probably not be physically wrestling (Honma). The tournament didn't need to be bigger than it was and if you're going to be bigger than just adding a lot of old and below average workers isn't doing anything to make it attractive.

Some of the matchup choices are questionable given the format too. Nagata/Ishii, Okada/Elgin, Naito/Ibushi (I have a rant incoming), Goto/SANADA, are all fairly big matches and while i understand you need some draws on the opening days it also eliminated a lot of the best workers right off the bat.

Doing Naito/Ibushi day one is fucking stupid. Yes it will be a great match. But neither of these guys should be losing in the first match. Naito spent all of last year doing nothing but treading water and loses way too much (he just dropped a clean pinfall to Taichi in a multiman! Taichi!). Ibushi just signed a contract something he has never done and is clearly in line for a huge push.

If they were going to do a big single elimination tournament then drop all the NJPW dads and lesser Bullet Club/Suzuki club members and get some more outsiders from Japan or give more guys like Umino a shot even if you're going to job them, at least its a big platform for them to show off.

Well I told you that Ibushi wasn't going to be winning the title at MSG man so I don't think this was that unpredictable. It makes having Naito going out in the first round even more frustrating though. I'm assuming they'll do a Naito/Ibushi program out of it but they could have done that from a quarter finals as well.

I haven't watched this weekend's show yet, but outside of a couple of bad matches, this has been a pretty fun tournament. Some surprising upsets, and some solid to great matches. Still upset Naito vs Ibushi was first round, but I'm not going to get too pissed since it happened, and nothing we can do about it. It made a great match, so that made up for the disappointment.

Everything would be forgiven in the unlikely event SANADA wins the Cup or hell even goes to the Finals.

I also final;ly watched the Baba tribute show. Fun stuff and they should try and do an inter-promotional singles match between Tanahashi and Miyahara at some point, maybe even at the Dome. They've got fantastic chemistry and the fans were super into it.

I could see SANADA winning it if the main event at MSG wasn't at stake. The rumor has always been that Omega was going to drop the title back to Okada at MSG and when he left that Jay White took over his story through that time. If that's to be believed, than Okada would be beating Jay at MSG. Gedo hates to deviate from the script he has. I'd love to see SANADA win (shit, I wanted Suzuki to get the Title at MSG as I'll be there), but I'd say he vs Okada will be the Final, and it'd be great.

i watched the Sanada semis and finals and will watch the other cup matches (I just had to skip to those as a fan). Went into the Finals not knowing the result (but knowing in my heart) and loved it. Their title match was better but this was really good and told a great story and left with you with the feeling if he'd JUST hit that Moonsault he would have had it. Okada gives his opponents so much while looking incredible, it's why he's the best lesson in what being the Ace is since at least Misawa.

I still find some of the booking of the opening round puzzling and don't think they needed to put so many guys in but the tournament ended up delivering where it mattered and putting over SANADA so strong was the absolute right move. If it wasn't for the MSG show they should have had him win tbh. Losing another title shot won't hurt him and going over MiSu/Goto/Tana/Okada in one tourny would have been a career achievement.

Wrestling purists might cry foul (and I haven't watched any of NJ Cup yet) but I can't get super into Sanada on account of how terrible his facial hair is.  :-[

People have been raving about the SHO/Shingo match from the opening night of the BOSJ. I watched it last night and goddamn, that was the best match I've seen in awhile. Don't know if I'd give it 5 stars or anything but it's really fucking good and you all should go out of your way to watch it.

He then followed it up with another fucking banger against Dragon Lee on Night 3. I'm watching Night 4 now, and Ospreay vs Rocky is suppoed to be phenomenal.

Just finished Rocky vs Ospreay and, holy shit that was fantastic. Rocky is still so good in the ring. The story the match told was great.

I loved the Moxley match and I loved the BOSJ Finals up until the last 5 or 6 minutes but I thought it was total overkill by the end and I also thought it was Shingo who really carried the match and held it together. I'm not at all into Ospreay's moveset of ultra flippy stuff and the goofy Rtruth spinkicks. There's a point where all the kickouts stop feeling epic to me and start feeling ridiculous.

NJPW spent what? A year almost on having Shingo going undefeated? Having him lose in the finals to a guy they had bumped to heavy and then bumped back down doesn't make any sense to me. Shingo was right on the cusp of breaking out as a BIG star who was ultra fresh.

Tana/Jay was really good. I'd honestly rather watch matches like Tana/Jay or Moxley/Juice where there's more of a story to it than guys kicking out of finishers for 10 minutes at this point.

I'm like 3 years behind on NJPW, but Moxley has me interested so much that I had to watch his match. And, it was awesome. He definitely busted out a ton of new moves (THAT WEIRD RELEASE VERTICAL SUPLEX WAS SICK) and his strikes looked a shit ton more vicious and stiff then in WWE. He actually wrestled like a lunatic fringe. He was terrific and also NO REBOUND LARIAT. Juice was great as well and his knee selling was fantastic. Just a great babyface performance from him. I'd go like **** 1/4 on it.

That was his best non-gimmick singles match. It's going to rule when someone pulls that earring out of his head.

I was glad Tana put Jay over in his return match as well, but the crowd's reaction to that was quite sad. My man Switchbladeoh really came into his own over the last year.

The BOSJ final was great but the wrong guy won.

I couldn't agree more. It's like when he joined BC a light switch went off and he just got it. He's the perfect leader to get BC back to what they were instead of the fun loving group The Elite made them into.

I also forgot to put down that Tana needed to be transitioned out of his role and replaced by someone else as he is now injured far too often. While it's sad and while he's not super old in wrestling terms, I definitely think it's necessary.

I really hope we see Brody King in the G1. I've been a fan of him since I first saw him on Championship Wrestling from Hollywood about 2-3 years ago and thought he's be great in NJPW. He had a great tour with Marty and the fans took to him pretty easily. He'd be great in the G1.

As an aside, I said from the start, PCO really shouldn't be part of Villain Enterprises (I thought it should have been Brody and Haskins with Marty). Seeing Brody second Marty during this tour has cemented how great they are together.

Just watched the event and too lazy to type up review of the final so these two posts summarized my feelings well enough

Unfortunately I think Hiromu returning was the big wrench in continuing Shingo's run, since it's pretty obvious that the first thing Hiromu's gonna do when he comes back is challenge for the belt he never properly lost.  Had Shingo won BOSJ I presume he would have also won the junior title at Dominion leading to a possible intra-stable feud which NJ is loathe to do, plus I imagine NJ is really banking on the Dragon Lee/Hiromu return match

I liked two hwt singles matches way better.   Moxley looks great (though weird seeing him in tights after years of wrestling fully clothed) and I liked the character work of Juice coming out taking the match all seriously and not doing his standard dancing and posing routine.  Also, I'll take Jay White sneakily beating Tana with an inside cradle over the five minute finisher overkill from the main event.

That's a pretty great card.

I love Moxley vs Umino. Shota has shown a ton of fire and this could be a fantastic brawl.

Shingo taking on one of the old guard to show that he deserves to play with the heavies.

GOD vs LIJ is always a solid match, but also shows how thin the heavyweight tag division is.

Ishii is a beast, and his last match with Taichi was really good.

Dragon Lee vs Ospreay should be a ton of fun.

Watched 2/3rds of the AXS TV broadcast of BOSJ. I friggin loved the Moxley/Juice Robinson match. As great as he will be in AEW, it made me slightly bummed that Moxley just can't be full time in NJPW because it seems like he'd absolutely thrive in Japan.

Juice looked awesome in defeat. Like a real resilient son of a gun that was able to stand toe to toe with a psychotic bastard like Moxley (even though he was low key scared shitless). I wasn't sure if Juice was main event level dude before this match but no question in my mind after that performance.

Already looking forward to the rematch.

As I said to 909 in chat (909 for most and vale for all watched in chat because we hardcore) I don't think 909 botched the finish exactly, it came across to me as he was trying a new finisher and it looked like shit or he still hasn't worked it out exactly. I could be wrong though.

Really strong show over-all. People who think Taichi can't work need to watch that Ishii match (among other matches really). Moxley/Umino was a fun simple match and Moxley picking him up and walking him back was a great touch of "we went to war but you get some respect kid" and it's the PERFECT way to get the crowd to love you in Japan. Moxley is so smart. Shingo/Kojima was  a really strong match and the perfect choice for shingos frist heavy match.

Kenta showing up was cool as was using shibata there. I'm not confident he can survive an entire g1 but im interested in watching. Moxley, Shingo and Kenta being in the g1 already freshen it up by a huge degree on their own. Hopefully Umino will also be in to add another and maybe Kojima will get his final run.

Lee/Ospreay felt like a let down after BOSJ and I don't know why they went back to Ospreay unless Hiromu isn't coming back for awhile. Ibushi/Naito was fantastic but jesus FUCKING christ, ibushi came the closest to dying I have seen a wrestler come in a very long time I think. i was legit terrified for him. That shit is NOT ok.

Jericho/Okada was not so good but the angle was great and the fans enjoyed the match. Finish was out of nowhere and was some 70s stuff but it made sense to protect jericho and it transitioned him to Tanahashi perfectly. The way they've turned Okada/Tana slowly into friends is also great. I'm hoping the stuff where CHAOS didn't come out to help Okada at all is some long term booking and we'll eventually see them toss Okada out for buddying up to Tana who is everything they've always despised.

I dunno what it is with the newfound western NJ fan wankery over Ospreay, but it's way over my head it seems.  I'll admit he's better now than when he first showed up but something about him still rubs me the wrong way and I just can't get into him.  Him winning the belt also makes me wonder what's gonna happen as far as Dragon and Hiromu since my theory from my earlier post just went out the window.

The Naito/Ibushi headdrop fests aren't compelling me anymore and I can stand not to see these two wrestle again anytime in the near future

Okada and Jericho funny enough I enjoyed if only because they tried something different there, though the execution was a bit off

When the most memorable aspect of the second largest show of the year is all the wrestlers grabbing mics and saying I WANNA BE IN THE G1 (admittedly one of them being motherfuckin KENTA, even though like CWM said I wonder if he can last thru the whole thing), something just doesn't seem quite right

btw Marufuji's (translated) response on Twitter to KENTA showing up:

Quote
I see.  You picked today of all days* to choose them over us.  Let me just say this.  Do your best... and don’t you dare get lost in the shuffle.

He's a great athlete but everyone these days is confusing great athleticism for great wrestling. He is creative as well but that's only one piece of the puzzle. He completely lacks the aggression for me to consider him to be a great wrestler.
Title: Re: Puroresu Love & Resources V3

If you want a guy to run through an athletic routine almost flawlessly really fast than Ospreay is a great choice. Otherwise I don't see a lot of appeal. Dragon Lee and Shingo are head and shoulders above him just to start as far as juniors, although Shingo is a heavy now I guess.

Marufuji firing shots at Kenta over the Misawa thing is interesting but NOAH is such a mess I don't think he really owes them anything. I get it though.

I thought Dominion was a solid show. I get not being into Naito/Ibushi because after that german on the apron I was really turned off for awhile before getting back into it by the end. That said I did really enjoy the match. Naito's heeling was fantastic. I don't want to see them work each other again for a long time though.

Shingo/Kojima, Ishii/Taichi, the Liger/MiSu stuff, Moxley/Umino all made the undercard a lot more interesting than it usually is. the undercard is normally just there but last night it felt like njpw was a whole company rather than just a hot upper card.

Finally watching the show now. I'm through the first 3 matches, and all 3 were great little matches. Shota getting in a bit of offense before Mox took over was great. That's exactly how he should handle a Lion. Helping Shota to the back was an interesting bit of storytelling.

Kojima vs Shingo was a great match and the perfect match-up for Shingo. They have a similar build and style, and worked well together.

ZSJ and MiSu are one of my favorite teams, and I love YOSHI-HASHI getting the huge upset as ZSJ was looking past him.

Watching Dragon Lee over the past few weeks in the BOSJ made me a huge fan of his. I've seen him here and there, but for was able to watch him work consistently for a few weeks really made me appreciate him. He's just so damn good in the ring. Shingo is phenomenal. His selling is great. And his back elbow, straight right, lariat is my favorite combo in wrestling.

First show I got the chance to see, so any thoughts are those of someone who barely knows what they're talking about:

--Mox/Lil Red Shoes was fun and made both guys look good. Mox did a great job, during and after, to make Shota look like he's on his way up, which is the important thing. I liked him helping Shota to the back without that fear of WWE bullshit.

--Shingo/Kojima was just right. Kojima is always one of my favorites, and they meshed well enough to make up for a few moments where Kojima was showing his age a little bit. I don't know anything really about Shingo (or pretty much everyone on this show), but that guy's a big deal. Kojima made him feel like a bigger one.

--During the tag match, I fully admit to just wanting me some Liger/MiSu. That and I was getting crazy tired through the middle of the show. I need to watch this again because I feel like I'm doing it a total disservice not remembering as much as I want to. I do know that I just have never had enough MiSu in my life.

--The six-man was fun, but Tana is looking rough. But the longer it went the more into it I got. I don't think I'm too big of a Juice fan, though. Don't know what it is. This is another one I want to rewatch. White impressed me way more than I thought he would, though.

--Ishii is fucking awesome and should just win everything. I think Ishii/Taichi was my personal match of the night; I went in knowing precious little of either guy and went out really liking both, but fucking Ishii, dude. I threw various star ratings all over the place in chat, but I don't remember any of them.

--GoD do not do it for me in the slightest, and I was a little disappointed. Something just felt off about this match, but I don't know if I'm able to tell you what just because I do not trust my puro brain enough. Just never clicked.

--Dragon Lee feels like a big deal. I really enjoyed watching him. But Ospreay did so little for me I'm confused. I think he'll be fine in a few years, but he was just an overly choreographed spot guy who was either going hilariously fast or painfully slow. He's got a good look, and like I said will be fine in a few years, but beyond that I fail to see the hype when people have been doing the same stuff better for some time. Lee was really good, though. Safe-but-scary dives, murder moves, aura. I like him.

--Ibushi/Naito was great fun until Ibushi fucking killed himself. They never quite got me back after that. I really like Ibushi, but he's fucking stupid. This was my first Naito experience, and purely for heel work and character he won me over, let alone how good he is. It was easy to get a lot of the character, and just root for that scumbag. But like I said, once Ibushi cracked himself it didn't seem as fun anymore. That was gross.

--Jericho has no business at this point in his career going longer than 15 minutes. He's a smarter worker than he was, and I think he knows his limitations to an extent, but he just can't do that long anymore. He visibly hit a wall and started to rapidly blow up at a certain point; I honest to god think he couldn't physically hold the Liontamer. Okada is the shit and what a champion should look like, however it felt like an awkward uphill climb at times. The angle after was fucking great, though. I don't know about the factions or alliances or whatever that well, but everything hit a perfect note. I can say whatever I want about Dad Bod Jericho as a worker, but he's one of wrestling's all time best shit talkers.

I really liked the show. The product itself was extremely fun and easy to watch (I got my second wind just before Ibushi/Naito), there was no wasted time, everything felt important. So much more was done with so much less than I've become used to with WWE crap, especially on a production level. And nothing makes a world title match mean more than the history of the IWGP championship montage before the match. That made it even bigger.

Ishii has grown to be one of my favorite wrestlers. Everything he does is just so badass. I was never big into Taichi, but his chemistry with Ishii is just insane. Ever since their match in the NJ Cup, Taichi has taken a step forward and seemed more comfortable as a heavyweight. I've often said that if someone can't have a great match with Ishii, that's on them not him. Ishii's matches with the likes of Goto and Shibata are some of my favorite and I could watch them all day. Ishii is one of the main guys I want to see against Moxley. I know everyone is begging for Suzuki, which I'd love to see, but Ishii would be absolutely amazing.

Meltzer and Alvarez really came down on the Ibushi/Naito match today. Said Ibushi is a dumbass for taking that apron bump and that he could have a broken neck.

Seeing highlights from the match just made me uncomfortable. Ibushi really drilled Natio on the back of his head/neck too.

The time to start calling out this stuff was when Shibata almost died. Things have just kept escalating and tbh Dave has encouraged a lot of it (not that Naito and Ibushi are people who care but US Indy guys in some cases do), I'm not saying he is responsible for people getting hurt or anything but I do think it's funny he just now seems to be realizing guys are out of control.

He's been critical of all the head bumps in all the Naito/Ibushi matches. He also called out Ospreay multiple times basically saying the thing holding him back from being the best in the world were all the head/neck bumps he was taking. He's always been against that.

My favorite take from that exchange was when Meltzer (or was it Alvarez?) pretty much said "don't praise this match because if you do, it just encourages other wrestlers to keep doing that stupid shit".

He's been critical while also calling them top 5 guys and all kinds of other stuff and throwing every snowflake at them. It's sort of a mixed message to me. If you say he's been more critical though I'll believe you.

See that's what I mean because these guys might say "this goes too far don't do it" and then give the match a crazy star rating and say they're one of the top 5 workers in the world. I have an issue with that because it sends a message to everyone else that that is how you get noticed.

You can be highly critical and give matches high ratings and still be upset by those particular spots. I had watched the match long after I saw the head bump. It was an awful bump, but before that and even after that, it was still a great match. It doesn't mean I want them to do those spots, but I can still enjoy the rest of the match.

And they are top 5 guys, but for some reason whenever they get in the ring with each other, they feel they have to do the head/neck bumps.

I'm listening to the show right now, and Dave even says that they should have stopped the match at that bump.

Nope, they just finally got to the point where former champions and prized signings demand to leave WWE so they can go there, where people who were in the other big promotions are now flocking to NJPW. I don't see him stepping down anytime soon.

I do think he's tossed his two year booking plans out of the window though judging from what's happened in the last six months. A booker can no longer predict what might fall into their lap. I think KENTA is going to be pushed very hard.

The participants for the 29th G1 Climax tournament have been revealed.
The full list of participants is as follows:

Block A:
Kazuchika Okada
Zack Sabre Jr.
Hiroshi Tanahashi
Kota Ibushi
EVIL
SANADA
Bad Luck Fale
Lance Archer
Will Ospreay
KENTA

Block B:
Tetsuya Naito
Tomohiro Ishii
Juice Robinson
Toru Yano
Hirooki Goto
Jay White
Jeff Cobb
Shingo Takagi
Taichi
Jon Moxley

This looks like a better distributed setup than last year. I wish Fale had been left out because he really hasn't done anything good in some time. Hopefully SANADA won't get lost in the shuffle with all the big names in A Block. Putting Tana and KENTA in A Block is interesting because I don't know if both of those guys can make it the whole way.

Can't wait to see Moxley vs Taichi and Ishii especially. If NJPW is going for the really huge Dome show then I'd guess the only real options for winners are Ibushi/Naito/Moxley. At the Dome some matches I'd consider would be;

Okada vs Ibushi
Tanahashi Vs Jericho
Naito Vs Jay White (KENTA if he's still healthy is an option)
Ospreay Vs Dragon Lee (Hiromu if he's back)
Moxley Vs Ishii
Liger Vs MiSu (they could do this sooner and do Mox/MiSu and a multiman with all liger's friends instead for the feel good retirement)

There's a bunch of top guys left over and there's stuff that might work better but I think we might see at least some version of that card over the two nights.

This year is pretty stacked. Would have liked Suzuki in instead of Fale, but whatever. There are some amazing match-ups

KENTA vs Okada, Tanahashi, SANADA, ZSJ, Ospreay, Ibushi
Naito vs Shingo
EVIL vs SANADA
Moxley vs Ishii, Yano (for pure entertainment value), Shingo, Naito, rematch with Juice, Goto, White

Does SANADA get his win over Okada here? It'd be a good idea.

No Ibushi vs Naito is a great thing.

Regarding Liger/MiSu, I would love to see MiSu unmask Liger and we see the return of Kishin Liger during that match.
Title: Re: Puroresu Love & Resources V3
Post by: Firmino of the 909 on June 16, 2019, 04:22:22 AM
MiSu apparently can't take back bumps anymore so there's no reason for him to be in G1 at all. Both of those blocks are drawn well with the exception of the constant Tana vs. Okada matches.

I have no doubt that Kishin Liger is coming out during the MiSu singles match.

So we've got the "work horse" block and the "crazy horse" block this year, nice

Definitely the most solid G1 lineup in several years.  My minor criticisms are that I'm not fond of Fale still being in (along with the compulsory annual Tana-Fale G1 match) and yet another Tana-Okada match.   Archer doesn't really excite me either although I am a little interested to see how he does without DBJ running interference on the outside.  No Yoshi-Hashi this year is also a plus.

On the other side, some surprising absences with no MiSu, Kojima or Makabe, though I can understand given those guys' ages and the available stock of younger/newer guys.  I know the last couple years I've been wanting Kojima to get a sendoff but it might just not be in the cards with the current crop.  In thinking about it also, Tenzan was a three-time champion and he plus Nagata were fixtures in the tourney for nearly two decades so makes sense those two would get special sendoffs.  Kojima OTOH was absent from NJ for most of the 00s, so maybe he just doesn't get one after all

Now if Makabe doesn't get any kind of sendoff down the road, barring an injury or his own choice to stay out, I'd be surprised
Title: Re: Puroresu Love & Resources V3

I think one of the more interesting things to talk about is the tag matches. When we have Shingo and Naito, and EVIL and SANADA, who will the seconds be? LIJ usually stay together, and BUSHI is the only one left. If he teams with Naito, who teams with Shingo? If he teams with EVIL, who teams with SANADA? Those should be interesting.

Also, I'd love to see Moxley and Shota vs Taichi and MiSu. It would give people a taste of Moxley vs MiSu for a later US Title match.

I don't mind Archer here. He got a good pop when they made the announcement and he's over in Japan. Fale could take a hike, though. Put in Chase if they need another BC pin taker. Plus his matches would be better.

Fale is in so that people in his block have a rest match. Same for Yano in the other block. I don't care for Fale either but I can't figure out who else fits in that spot.

I think Naito will beat Tana in the final to win. My presumption is that they kept them apart for two years for that reason.

The other possibility is White vs. Ibushi.

Ibushi vs Naito with Naito winning in order to have him end WK as Double Champion. Following night, Sanada breaks from LIJ and attacks Naito. Looks to both of the fallen belts and hesitates before picking up the IC title.

Had to go run some errands and jumping back into my recording of last night's show.  I want to praise this Kevin Kelly/ Rocky Romero commentary team.  I don't recall hearing Rocky on commentary before but I thought he did a damn fine job.  I liked how during the 3K match he stayed consistent to his character in showing concern for his team but not being overly/ distractingly biased or grating as those in other companies can be in similar spots.

Addtionally, Kevin Kelly did a really good job of calling the action and educating those new to the product without insulting or irritating people who have been around.  The key example of this to me was during the EVIL/Fale match, he was pointing out the longer leash NJPW officials allow wrestlers to have and how you really have to do something "felonious" to get a DQ - then transitioned that into putting over Fale by talking about how he was dastardly enough to get DQed six times in last year's tournament.  I just felt that was really good story-telling, putting over the product and character and essentially everything you'd want in a commentator.

I'm used to watching NJPW through AXS so it was that rough Ross/Barnett team and even the Don Callis appearances, which I am not a fan of Don Callis.  Really enjoyed the commentary on this, which I can't remember last time I said that as even my favorite brand (NXT) has some commentary that gets really, really distracting at times.

Hope that KENTA-Ibushi match silences some of the people that acted like KENTA was too old and broken down in WWE.  There some fun matchups to be had and that shows, beyond how good Ibushi is, KENTA still has something to give.

Rocky is a natural there. Hard to believe that last year was the first time he did commentating. He was a little rough his first night, but picked it up fast. Kevin Kelly knows how to get the best out of the people working with him, except for Lanny, who was dreadful. What I love about Rocky is that while he'll put over the other Chaos guys, he's also a fan of other guys. He loves ZSJ and Taka and talks about it all the time. His hate for BUSHI is a great bit, too.

Akiyama is out as AJPW President. The Owner is taking over. This never ends well for AJPW. Akiyama over the last 5 years got the company back on its feet and turned it into a really great product but they've gone as far as they can as regards business. There's only so much you can do without major tv or the money to bring in bigger names, etc. From a booking perspective Akiyama was probably the best in the business the last several years.

Enjoying G1 so far. I'm seeing the Meltzerites complaining about KENTA and Taichi but I'm enjoying both of those guys. Taichi doing his scummy Kawada wannabe stuff is fun and him bringing back Iizuka's IRON MITTEN is fantastic. KENTA has worked at the same pace since like 2008 so the complaining I've seen is funny.

Moxley/Cobb was different than what you usually get with a lot of smart armwork that led right into spots and not really centered around big bumps and it was a nice change of pace. The finish felt a bit out of nowhere but I like the idea that if he hits anykind of ddt it's over. Moxley also is great at framing "big" moments in matches. Like the moment where he and Cobb came back down the ramp on either side just staring at each other was something you know they planned out.

Ishii/White was fantastic and White has grown so much.

I'm one day behind and I'm catching up on yesterday's show. Mox and his son Shota might be the greatest thing ever. I love everything about that. And if AEW actually was working with NJPW, it'd be a perfect place for him to go on excursion to, but alas.

Taichi has started to grow on me since his feud with Ishii over the Never title. Actually since Iizuka retired he seems to have taken a little bit from Iizuka and it's been very good. I don't mind him here.

Night 2 was the night of upsets, and I loved everything about it. Doing that, and doing it the right way, makes the tournament exciting.

CWM, regarding Jay White, you mentioned in the MOTY thread, about him getting better over the past year. I agree 100% with you. It's like once he joined BC, he was able to find that character he's been looking for. He's much more comfortable in the role, and I think working with Gedo has helped so much for him.

Completely agree. Something turned around G1 Supercard time with him. I always felt that too...that he was on his way to being a more well rounded heel but it took some time since I think he was put into a position he obviously at first wasnt ready for (main event heel from the repackaging almost immediately). That said, he's really gotten to where he needs to be now and his look is also much more credible as a main event heel.

In fact, I think the match with him and Ishii was the best match so far in G1.

There's a lot of guys hurting this year (Tana, Ospreay, Naito, etc) but it's been a solid tourny and Night 6 was great. Moxley/Ishii was everything I was hoping for. Naito and Goto stepped up despite Naito being in not his best shape. Juice/Cobb and Shingo/Taichi were both really good. Best that Taichi has looked in the tourny.

Moxley backstage was great "My wife is going to be so mad at me...it was all Ishii's fault, he started the whole thing anyway!". His ending promo in ring was also really great and the crowd was eating it up. If he sticks around and they keep pushing him he's gonna be a mega-star.

I'll be watching that show tomorrow as I have to catch up on yesterday's show. I've heard nothing but amazing things about Ishii/Mox, but I'm not surprised. Mox has killed it in NJPW so far, and Ishii is the type of guy that if someone doesn't have a good to great match with him, it's on his opponent. He's that good.

I keep saying that I want to see Moxley stay in NJPW instead of going to AEW. I've loved him so much so far. Kidnapping Shota has been so fun, and I think if NJPW and AEW were working together, Shota having an excursion to AEW would have been perfect. His promos have been incredibly entertaining, and his work is so crisp and just feels new.

Watching whatever G1 part aired on AXS yesterday now.  That countout in the ZSJ-Fale match was the best use of countdown I've seen in New Japan with the 20 count and the best use of countdown I've seen in general in a very long time.

I haven't watched that show yet, but in the BOSJ there was one done in YOH vs Kanemaro that was perfect. They were brawling on the outside and the count was coming. Both guys ran to the ring, but Kanemaro threw Tsuji into YOH at 18 and he couldn't get back into the ring in time.

I got around to watching Moxley-Ishii and........

Stone Pitbull is like my favorite dude in NJPW currently, it was Naito for a bit but I digress......

I didn't like the match as much as a lot of people did.  I was seeing/hearing MOTY hype and I didn't get that at all watching it.  It was an ok match, but tbh disapointing given the hype.  That's kind of why I like to watch things fresh and cold without expectations.  My expectation was it would be a fun match, and it was, but it's nothing I'd rate as special

Also, I saw way too much of WWE Ambrose from Moxley in the match.  Telegraphing reversal spots in particular.  If he wants to be crazy Terry Funk or Brody in Japan.....it's a high bar and god bless him, but this match did not live up to me expectations.....which is a bummer....but maybe my expectations were unrealistic

So Jay Vs Ibushi is the finals. I'm ok with this as long as Ibushi wins and I'm pretty certain he will. Then I'd do Jay vs Naito because he shat all over him and they need to give Naito something good.

Juice/Moxley was a lot of fun as a story but I think it was a notch below their first match. It told a great story and I think Moxley made Juice look fantastic as a babyface.

He's been fantastic. He actually got the NJPW fans on his side during his match with Tanahashi. He got the Claw over in 2019. I remember him being a solid big man, nothing more. He had great matches this year. Even his match with Fale was a fun big man match. I'd love to see him get a run with a belt, most likely the US. Give Shingo the NEVER, Jay works with Naito and the IC, and Ibushi with the world.

spiller free advice: if you're like me and immediately skipped to the final match (I got work this morning!), don't, because you'll wind up with a very WTF response immediately

At the least, definitely watch the two tag matches right before the final (especially the first one), starting around the 1hr30m mark on the New Japan World feed

I can only imagine seeing it in that context, the shock value of it is a large part of what made the moment. That was the best thing that Bullet Club has ever done.

Meltzer says that Shibata isn't going to do a return match, but I know that if I was Gedo and I was going to book KENTA/Shibata for the Dome, I probably wouldn't tell anyone except those two until the press conference. There has to be a strong chance of it.

Ibushi 'Honestly I don't really like anything. What's the deal with golf? Why do old people like it?'
It's social, I think. It's good to have a hobby.
'I guess I'm still looking for one'
Fishing?
'Fishing pisses me off'
(Huge laughter)
Ibushi 'What?'
No, no, it's ok.
'Sorry, I don't know who likes what.'
True. Liger likes to fish. Okada, too, he was talking about it on the bus.
'What's fun about it? When you get a fish, what happens then? That's what pisses me off about fishing'
Kushi 'I don't really have a hobby either. Reading, I love to read'
Ibushi 'I tried getting into reading, it did my head in'
Kushi '...'
'Somebody created all this, made characters and made you envision them, become them, see what they see. It's amazing. I don't trust books'
From Kushida's podcast.

Ibushi is hilarious

Listened to Meltzer this morning. He says Shibata isn't cleared to wrestle but is going to try his hardest to get cleared. He mentioned that he gets very physical training students at the LA Dojo and the recent physical confrontation he had with the BC suggests that maybe he can work a match as long as they stay away from his head.

As much as I want to see Shibata in the ring again, I don't think the risk is worth the reward. Just back someone else to go after KENTA.

Quote
Will Shibata make his dramatic return to deal with KENTA and his betrayal himself, or will we return to the U.S. to redouble his coaching to make sure his young charges are as prepared as possible to deal with the BULLET CLUB menace?

So yeah I think he's probably cleared...

best year ever (i'd love to know what kind of numbers the inoki years in the 80-90's did and the breakdowns). Profits were down because they've been investing more in expansion and video game content (etc) but revenue was up, live attendance was up, etc. Overall more than 10% revenue growth and they're hoping for 12% next year.

An average ticket price of $53 is damn good.  I'm willing to bet that's almost double what WWE and most other companies get.  The Japanese economy was booming in the 80s but companies like AJPW were still strong and probably bit into their numbers.

I went to the first show of NJPW's Fall US tour at the beautiful Lowell Memorial Auditorium in scenic Lowell, Massachusetts last night. God damn. That was easily in Top 5 maybe Top 3 best shows I've ever been to and probably the best house show I've ever been too. Just a spectacular card that was masterfully paced and the way the action escalated throughout the night was frankly beautiful.

The crowd was super hot throughout the night and I was amused how for the most part, kind of behaved like a Japanese wrestling audience with very limited dumb chants. Just perfect. It wasn't totally sold out but I'd say it was 90% full.  Having been to 3 or 4 NJPW/ROH supershows, the difference in the level of efforts between those and this was night and day. It was crazy seeing Naito actually trying for one. It was really close to maximum effort for most of the guys and way better than a WWE house show level of effort.

I loved the gaijin special guest stars that they brought in (well, except TJP). The Rock N Roll Express were probably most over act of the night besides Okada and Tanahashi. They had an extremely fun comedy match with Chase Owens & Jado (who is somehow 10x more washed than Ricky & Robert despite being 10-15 years younger). But Jado did the funniest Flair flop I've ever seen. He just winced and shuffled around like an old man who had eaten some bad clams for like a minute before falling on his face.

I liked or loved every match on the card. Main event was a six man tag that had Okada, Tanahashi, and Kota Ibushi Vs Naito, Sanada, and Evil that was probably MOTN. A very solid 20-25 minute six man tag. I went to the bathrooms but I overheard one of the babyfaces screaming on the mic about how excited he was to eat at Taco Bell after the show during the postmatch babyfaces speech. Also I ran back in time to see Tanahashi gave us THREE air guitar solos.

NJPW Tag Team Titles match between Roppongi 3K Vs GoD and Tomohiro Ishii & Amazing Red Vs Shingo Takagi and BUSHI were close runner ups. I also personally loved Lance Archer Vs Ren Narita. Just a really great big man/plucky rookie babyface match. I really hope Lance Archer resigns with NJPW cause I think he could be a great midcard heel for them for the next few years and I don't think any other promotion come close to utilizing him better.

Really solidified my opinion that NJPW is, far and away, still the best promotion in the world in 2019. Even their B level effort blows away most A shows.

I'll type up a review of the show later as I'm on my iPad, but apparently Matt Koon, who was at the show, met up with an unnamed NJPW wrestler after the show. He said the wrestler was so apologetic, and mentioned that they (the NJPW wrestlers and higher ups) have an idea who made the call. The wrestler didn't give a name, but speculation has been made that it was someone within ROH.

ROH makes most sense to me. Hammerstein Ballroom is small beans for WWE and AEW. And if WWE wanted to fuck someone over there, they would've done it for the gazillion wrestling shows in the past 15 years.

ROH should worry more about the fact that they played to a 2/3rds empty, 1,000 seat venue last night when they sold most of the tickets at $13 a pop on Groupon. I bet Limitless Wrestling drew a better gate for their last show.

That was a complete garbage bush league cheap shot and I'm afraid this is far from the last we've seen of these type of moves.
Title: Re: Puroresu Love & Resources V3
Post by: Big Beard Booty Daddy on September 29, 2019, 03:10:57 AM
It seems weird for ROH to be doing it. I'd want to know why the person did it. Are they upset that NJPW soldout Hammerstein, when ROH couldn't sell 300 tickets the last time they were there? ROH's new world champion is a guy CMLL just fired, and they are using Dragon Lee, who was just fired, too. CMLL has a relationship with ROH (for now), and NJPW.

The idea that someone called the ambulance corp means that it was someone who knew exactly who to call. That would mean someone had to either do some research, or they dealt with them in the past. I'm ROH is upset that Juice pulled out of their shitting Lifeblood team, and NJPW hasn't sent anyone over since then, that I can remember, outside of GOD, who had to defend the ROH tag titles. We can pray that this is the end for that relationship.

I rarely speak poorly of current NJPW mostly cause it's rarely bad but I watched the chopped up AXS TV broadcast of Destruction in Kagoshima and holy crap, that KENTA Vs Kota Ibushi match was hot garbage. I've heard a lot of wise acres in the IWC talk about how washed KENTA was and yeah, it's obvious from the 3 or 4 matches I've seen since he's clearly lost a few. But man, this match. Hooooo. *plugs nose and waves hand over it* It takes a lot to get a bad match out of Kota Ibushi in the year of our lord 2019 but my man KENTA managed to do it.

Weird as hell cause their first match in Dallas was pretty dang good.

This was like one of those '92-'94 Macho Man Randy Savage Coliseum Video matches where the heel beat him up for 90% of the match and then Savage hit a quick comeback except it was almost 30 god damn minutes long.

Not really feeling Suzuki in NOAH again either tbh. His last run there probably did more harm than good although I enjoyed it and its probably too soon to go back to him there. AJPW would be great though. MiSu Vs Kento would be HUGE

Liger is god. Ospreay/Phantasmo was kickout overkill but was fun. Archer/Juice was a lot of setting up stuff in the ring to break and nowhere near as good as the Mox match would have been but I get they didn't have time to plan and it was still fun. Glad to see Lance get a chance. Haven't seen the last two matches but I know the results (and would without having been spoiled really). YOUR DAY WILL COME SANADA.

Also lol Naito is Taichi's bitch-boy.

Really weird to strip Moxley for missing one show.  I'm guessing they know they won't be able to use him much because of AEW so this was a good excuse as any.

I'm assuming he was already gonna job to Juice, who was gonna job to Archer so they decided to cut out the middleman.

It sounds like Mox will be back for the occasional guest appearance, at least. I hope we get him Vs Lance Archer. I think it'd be fun to see two crazy bastards like them butting horns.

It's how they've always done things. If someone can't make a defense, they are stripped. Makabe was stripped of the NEVER Open title when he had the flu the same day as a show. Chono was stripped of the tag titles when his father died and he was going to miss the show. NJPW feels if they advertised a title match, the fans are going to get a title match.

Yeah this wasn't because of AEW. Mox has said he intends to do more NJPW in a bunch of interviews. If you look at NJPW title histories this happens although not often.

https://www.f4wonline.com/japan/njpw-parent-company-bushiroad-acquires-stardom-295061

Notes from that:
There are no plans at present for Stardom talent to appear on New Japan shows, or vice versa. However, if New Japan does see a demand for women's matches on foreign shows, where there is no sign of any at this point, this will give them easier access to broker a deal for such talent.

NJPW and Stardom will be run and kept completely separate.

Hiroshi Ogawa with Reoman as the Stardom CEO.

As part of the deal, a TV show will air on BS NTV and Tokyo MX starting in January, with the BS NTV show being a 30 minute show on Thursdays.

The streaming service Stardom World will remain the exclusive for Stardom events. New Japan World will not be streaming Stardom, and with New Japan World part-owned by TV-Asahi and the Stardom TV deal with rival NTV, politically that would be almost impossible to work out.

The Stardom talent will also be signed to full-time contracts.

Walter worked for big japan a lot in the past so this might be something they're letting Walter do rather than a partnership. If it is a partnership though it's pretty awesome because BJPW has a fantastic roster of non-death match guys. If I can see Sekimoto vs Cesaro or really a dozen different dudes...ah shit.

Dome shows are shaping up very nicely

anuary 4 -

Kazuchika Okada vs. Kota Ibushi for the IWGP Heavyweight title
Jay White vs. Tetsuya Naito for the IWGP Intercontinental title
Will Ospreay vs. Hiromu Takahashi for the IWGP Jr. title
Jushin Thunder Liger, Tatsumi Fujinami, The Great Sasuke & Tiger Mask (with El Samurai) vs. Naoki Sano, Shinjiro Ohtani, Tatsuhito Takaiwa & Ryusuke Taguchi (with Kuniaki Kobayashi)

January 5 -
IWGP Heavyweight champion vs. IWGP Intercontinental champion for both titles
The two non champions following the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental title matches on January 4 will have a singles match
Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Chris Jericho
Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo vs. SHO & YOH for the IWGP Jr. Tag Team titles

Sanada is being criminally underused considering how great a year he has had but aside from that it's a fantastic two-night card and hopefully he'll get a big angle at DASH or something. Super hyped for the two Liger matches more than anything else tbh. Gonna be bitter-sweet. Teaming with Sano against the modern mega-rivals is the perfect ending.

Those cards look great but it is a bit of a bummer that they have two nights of shows and still have to stick some awesome talent like Shingo and Ishii in multiman tags. At least SANADA gets a singles match.

Agreed. I see so many people bitching that it should have just been a three way on night 2. This is what Lyger wanted, and I think it is much better. Lyger is my all-time favorite wrestler, so to see him retiring makes me so emotional, but I love that NJPW is giving him 3 straight days or celebrations (with NY Dash being about his ceremony).

I can see people wanting Ishii, Shingo, ad Suzuki to have matches, especially Shingo who had an amazing year. Suzuki is sitll hurting, so tag matches are better for his health right now.

Tokyo Sports announced their annual awards today. Kazuchika Okada took the top honor of MVP of the Year for the fourth time, previously winning in 2012, 2013 and 2015. Antonio Inoki holds the record with six wins. The winners of this year’s awards are:
MVP: Kazuchika Okada (NJPW)
Best Bout: Kazuchika Okada vs. SANADA from NJPW King of Pro Wrestling
Best Tag Team: Suwama & Shuji Ishikawa (AJPW)
Outstanding Performance: Kento Miyahara (AJPW)
Technique: Kota Ibushi (NJPW)
Rookie: Strong Machine J (Dragon Gate)
Women: Mayu Iwatami (Stardom)

Can't really disagree with most of this although I'd have picked Miyahara for Technique. Suwama/Shuji deserve the love so I'm happy there. They should add an award to recognize talent outside of the major companies though because it's impossible to get recognition if you aren't in NJPW or a couple of others.

Three more undercard matches added to WrestleKingdom. Night one apparently is gonna open with OLD DAWGS, for some reason, as Yuji Nagata and Manabu Nakanishi take on Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima. Night one is also gonna have a Young Lions heavy eight man tag Tomoaki Honma, Togi Makabe, Yuya Uemura, and Yota Tsuji vs. Toa Henare, Alex Coughlin, Clark Connors, and Karl Fredericks.

Night Two is going to have a NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Titles gauntlet with Yano, Togi Makabe, and Taguchi Vs CHAOS Vs Bullet Club Vs LIJ Vs Suzuki Gun.

No disrespect to OLD DAWGS or Young Lions but weird that those matches got a spot on the card and Shingo Takagi doesn't have a singles match. Grumble grumble.

Those matches being added do me think of who WWE would drag out for undercard matches if they had to make WrestleMania two nights.

A couple notable results from non-NJ shows over the last few days

The biggest shock came from the sellout NOAH show in Korakuen that ran counter to WK Night 1 as newfound young ace Kaito Kiyomiya's year+ GHC reign ended at the hands of Go Shiozaki.  Shiozaki sported new Misawa-inspired green and white attire counter to Kiyomiya's (don't feel like linking tweets but you can find them easily); whether that was a one-time thing or permanent change we'll have to see.  This also makes Go a double champ since he is part of the current GHC tag champions with Nakajima.  To me this very similar to what happened with Ben-K and the Dream Gate title where both had a lot of defenses against the old guard and I had expected both to eventually drop the belts to a generational peer (e.g. Kzy in DG, Nakajima in NOAH) and then got surprised (not necessarily in a bad way, especially as someone who wanted to see Doi get another DG run) when they lost the belts back to older wrestlers

From the two All Japan shows, while most people would focus on another excellent Kento defense (though I was not a fan of the immediate Lee rematch, especially now with two losses in a row Lee's challenger credibility will take a long while to rebuild), the big thing for me was Dragon Gate workhorse Susumu Yokosuka winning the 8-man tourney for the junior title vacated by Atsushi Aoki's death last June.  First I'm happy just as a big fan of Susumu, but the bigger picture is that along with things like Kagetora also being in that tourney and Mochizuki's 2019 work in AJ/NOAH/BJW shows that DG is overcoming the insular attitude they adopted for most of the 2010s and are going back to more cooperation with other puro feds like they did during their first major peak in the mid-00s
Title: Re: Puroresu Love & Resources V3
Post by: Slayer on January 06, 2020, 09:43:26 AM
So, funny enough, Go 2Belts didn't even last 24 hours as he and Nakajima lost the GHC tag belts at the 1/5 Korakuen show (which unlike the 1/4 show ran before WK rather than against it) to the team of Marufuji and Masaaki motherfucking Mochizuki.  Aside from the title change, the main story coming out of the match appears to be setting up for Nakajima to challenge Go for his first GHC defense as Go was so distracted taunting Marufuji outside the ring he missed Mochi catching a quick cradle on Nakajima for the pin when Go could have easily broken it up otherwise

Also tying to my previous post is the fact that now two DG wrestlers have belts from other feds

I figured something was up by the way he was acting at the dome show.

I'm a fan of his so I'm sad to see him go but at the same time it's best for him because he is a shell of himself and I hate seeing people rip on him for being slow and immobile who never saw him in his prime. He was never on the level of the best of his generation peers but he had a lot of charisma and was a fun big man.

I think it might have to do with the coverage the companies will get. The more coverage on TV over in Japan, the less space for NXT Japan there would be. I don't know what streaming in Japan is like, if it's big or not, but they're going to go with already established companies first. At least that's my thinking on it, and I could be totally off.

I really don't see any channel especially network giving any company in Japan, WWE, NJPW or whoever another TV show especially a spinoff. Most of the companies are struggling. NOAH just got sold AGAIN.

https://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/prores/noah/1708794/

It's now owned by the same company that owns DDT. AJPW is also in serious financial trouble (it always is though). Dragon Gate I don't think is healthy. Big Japan, Wrestle1, etc all have to be skating close to the edge.

New Japan wants to do another MSG show in August.

It'd be interesting to see what they will draw with people knowing that Elite guys are not going to be there. Presumably, Tony Khan will be like "Fuck off!" if they ask for any of the AEW guys to be on the card.

With that in mind, this should obviously main event NJPW's 2nd MSG show.

Probably even more important than the 2nd MSG show is the news that NJPW is returning to its old primetime, network television timeslot in Japan.

Also WrestleDynasty is the same night as NXT Takeover: Boston so that raises a lot more questions about attendance. Under those circumstances, I wonder if it'd almost be better if they did the adjacent Hulu Theater at MSG that has 5k-6k seat capacity and packing it out instead of risking another G1 in Dallas situation.

Probably even more important than the 2nd MSG show is the news that NJPW is returning to its old primetime, network television timeslot in Japan.

I've seen a lot of confusion about this. They aren't going to be on Network TV. They with be on BS Asahi which is a satellite station. TV Asahi is the network station.

That's still great news, it just isn't as huge as getting on network much less Prime Time Network.

Well. I guess it's easy to see how dumb gaijin like myself can get confused over that.

It's still great news. And prime time network TV doesn't really equal a game changer as much as it used to do (coughFRIDAYNIGHTSMACKDOWNcoughcough)

Okada Vs Jay White, Ospreay Vs Shingo, and Tana Vs Taichi all seem like odd matches to waste on the first round but I guess they need to generate some excitement on those shows. Consider me pumped for MiSu Vs Yuji Nagata as well.

I don't know if anyone else watched the Nakanishi retirement show but his farewell match was about as good as you can get for a nostalgia guys Vs current stars match. They did a great job of reminding fans what made the NJPW Dads so great without overshadowing the current roster. Also fun and random as hell to see Tanahashi act heelish.

Not at all surprising but really sucks. I'm expecting this to start happening in Mexico and the US too tbh.

Yeah, I'm wondering if there's any chance WrestleMania gets canceled.

Wrestle-1 is dead as of April 1.

Quote
Keiji Mutoh and President Kaz Hayashi held a press conference at the GEN Sports Palace Media Center in Okubo, Tokyo to announced that WRESTLE-1 will suspend all activities as of April 1st. This date also being their last show at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

Mutoh stated that the promotion has faced a deficit after the launch, in July of 2013, and they have struggled ever since. Mutoh stated that GEN Sports, as the owners of W-1, which is connected to K-1, has take up the financial burden year after year. Which it has been decided that there is no reason to inconvenience them any further. President Kaz Hayashi stated that everyone involved in W-1 has tried hard to keep this from happening, but sadly it was just beyond their means to turn things around.

The entire W-1 staff and wrestlers will be no longer under contract with the promotion as of March 31st. Though they have agreed to take part in the final show the following day. The event card will be announced on a later date.

Mutoh also announced that his final appearance for the promotion will be on March 15th for the final big show in Ota Ward. He will be unable to attend the Korakuen Hall show on April 1st as he is previously booked to be in the USA for several independent shows during WrestleMania weekend in Tampa, Fl.

This whole thing only happened because the former owner of AJPW was such a dickhead who had no idea what he was doing and Mutoh and his guys couldn't take it anymore and left. On the one hand it is a shame the company is shutting down because the last year or so they finally started to find their ground with STRONGHEARTS and other guys coming in and a really good crop of trainees starting to impress people. On the other hand there are too many companies in Japan and they aren't making money.

What I HOPE happens is some of these guys end  up in AJPW/NOAH/NJPW/etc but what is the usual pattern is that we get 4 smaller splinter companies.

Tokyo Sports posted something speculating that AJPW may be merging into WWE.  There is speculation this is part of the reason that Jun Akiyama is the Performance Center this week.

AJPW just tweeted that Jun Akiyama was going there to learn about WWE's television production as well as the guest PC Coaching.

So in case you're wondering "Why the hell are there so many camera cuts? I just want to watch this Kento Miyahara match!" in a few months...

New Japan has canceled all of their shows through April 11th so I guess it's too early to say Japan is through the Corona crisis.

NOAH GHC Heavy Result from today:
Go Shiozaki (c) defeats Kazuyuki Fujita (57:47)

I mean even when he was young Fujita wasn't a long match guy... Seems crazy.
