Title: College FOOTBAW 2019
Post by: Harley Quinn on August 23, 2019, 10:37:07 PM
Season starts off today with Miami against #8 Florida as the marquee game. Arizona/Hawaii duel later tonight while the FCS features Youngstown State taking on Samford on ESPN in the middle of the day. Season then kicks off proper Thursday and Saturday!

Questions of Sound Design
#1: Graham Harrell is ready to introduce the Air Raid to USC and try and save Clay Helton's ass along with the program. Thoughts, 909?

#2: Do you believe in last year's 4-8 Nebraska program heading into this season? Maybe the most hyped up team in the nation.

#3: Justin Herbert, maybe the best NFL QB Prospect this year, is ready to try and carry Oregon to the playoffs. Notre Dame, Michigan, Auburn, Oklahoma, and a whole host of other teams are ready to shut that shit down though. Which teams do you think have an outside shot at the playoffs or may surprise the most?

#4: Clemson and Alabama yet again look like two of the top teams in the nation to the surprise of nobody. Does either QB run away with the Heisman Trophy? Is there a Dark Horse Heisman winner in your mind?

I'M WATCHING FOOTBAW

It heals the Andrew Luck news to see a good game between two big name schools. Also, FUCK FLORIDA

Ooh, that felt good, it's been a while.

Watching the Hawai'i game was a lot of fun. When that Run & Shoot is humming and going right, it's beautiful to watch just how wide open those WRs can get. Byrd was absolutely ripping up Arizona's D down the middle in that first half and they just couldn't stop him at all throughout the game. On the flip side, the misreads and tipped balls also can lead to a lot of struggles which is what happened to McDonald and led to his benching.

It wasn't always like this! Besides the streak of freak comebacks in the first half of the 2016 season... it has been for the last decade. I couldn't guess at what's all gone so wrong. It's been way too long to say the Lane Kiffin affair is what's still the problem. The fanbase is shattered too, finding itself looking forward to basketball season more often than not.

Tennessee is looking like a real football team, up 13-10 over BYU early in the third quarter~

EDIT: Nevermind, BYU's already at midfield. We can't give up less than three yards a carry.

Tennessee getting muscled into their own end zone to lose the game was a fitting way to go down. Good gravy. 0-2.

Take this as bitching, but Jesus fucking Christ.. How many LSU defenders had to have the medical staff come out onto the field during the second half..

Turns out there’s a reason why...

Quote
LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron confirmed to media members Monday that the Tigers did not have air conditioning in the locker room Saturday for its game against Texas.

Heat creating dehydration creating cramps. No cooling off at halftime.

This shouldn’t even be allowed.

North Dakota State won again and in their defeat of North Dakota 38-7 on Saturday, they've now won 23 straight games. It's the longest current streak in Division I and the 5th-longest in FCS history. They'll have their hands full with #18 Delaware up next.

So I was able to watch Footbaw 2 of the first 3 weeks of the season and I'm actually happy to be shelling out for ESPN+ due to the access of games I wouldn't normally catch (which it is a running joke in my family about me choosing Idaho @ Wyoming over an SEC game).

That said, for the major marquee games coming up, the top of the pile is looking REALLY good. The final 4 is going to boil down to attrition.

I’m a Michigan fan, but most of us know what they’ve been the most overrated team in all of football for the last 20 years. Every season when they start ranked so high you just know they can’t end the season there.

Cal held on to beat Ole Miss 28-20 after an Ole Miss WR caught the pass with his body in the end zone and ball at the 1 yard line. Subsequent QB Sneak got stuffed and time ran out. Crazy finish.

I was lucky to be at work and basically watched this. What a completely bonkers game. I figured UCLA was dead and out of nowhere they started coming back. When they made it back within I think it was 49-38, I started thinking this could turn into a crazy finish but didn't think it could get that crazy.

Fun Fact: Connor Halliday threw for 734 yards at home and lost, now Anthony Gordon throws 9 TD at home and also lost. COUG CURSE.

Georgia Southern remains undefeated following a 2 OT win. They have a good chance to run the table and stay undefeated by year's end.

App State also has a chance to run the table and get highly ranked if they can also beat South Carolina on 11/9.

Georgia Southern knocked off #20 Appalachian State 24-21, dooming App State's chances at a potential high bowl appearance.

Other big games this week in terms of rivalries or high stakes: Army/Air Force, Miami/Florida State, #22 Kansas State/Kansas, #8 Georgia/#6 Florida, #15 SMU/#24 Memphis (in PRIME TIME), and #7 Oregon/USC.

At the FCS level you have - #15 Dartmouth/Harvard, #9 Northern Iowa/#7 Illinois State, #16 North Carolina A&T/South Carolina State, #1 North Dakota State/Youngstown State, and finally #3 Weber State/#6 Sacramento State.

This situation is one of the more "fuck you NCAA" situations I've read in a while.

I'm not an LSU fan, but I was at an LSU party earlier with LSU people in an FCS town (that was playing away so it wasn't TOO bad) and my God Larry the Cable guy could have been there taking notes for his next tour.

That said, as a fan of the sport, the product on the field was very entertaining.

The only guy who has returned from a busted hip to play in the NFL was Dennis Pitta, and he busted it two more times. A player cannot actually come back from that and maintain a consistent career. Worst of all Tua plays a position where guys will run at him full speed and try to kill him on every play.

Playoffs will be announced Sunday, so we have to wait multiple days unlike the Saturday teams.

There's a really nice Q&A here related to playoff selection as well as pertaining to this season: http://www.fcs.football/cfb/story.asp?i=20191121115455672936004

"This is not just for FCS football, we're using the same selection and bracketing process that they use for the men's basketball, the women's basketball, baseball, softball. It's the exact selection and bracketing process that they use among all their championships."

Also congrats to Nicholls :) Still sad that UMass made the jump to FBS and are just a college of the poor sisters compared to their success at the FCS level. Worth highlighting the massive jump Kennesaw State has made as well in their jump to the FCS level and their success (9-1, scored 440 points thus far, and lost to Kent State 23-26).

Coaching changes aplenty starting to happen!

Tim Walsh announced his retirement after coaching at Cal Poly for 11 years going 59-66. He's best known for coaching at Portland State for 14 seasons.
Bob Davie is out at New Mexico after going 35-63 over 8 years there with a likely factor being his health scare in September.
Mark Elder is out at Eastern Kentucky despite back to back 7 win seasons.
Tony Sanchez is out at UNLV after 5 years and winning just 16 games.

A few 'upsets' in the FCS playoffs already with the biggest being SE Louisiana beat Villanova 45-44 thanks to Chason Virgil's 474 yard 3 TD performance at QB.

#18 Austin Peay steamrolled #16 Furman 42-6 and #13 Illinois State beat down #12 SE Missouri State 24-6. Finally, RB Jonathan Murphy paced #15 Kennesaw State's 28-21 win over #11 Wofford with 206 yards and 3 TD on the ground.

North Dakota State is going for their 35th straight win (and eventually their 8th Championship in 9 tries this season) on ESPN at Noon. What has really made this run even more impressive? They've had 3 different Head Coaches in this run since 2003: Craig Bohl (2003-2013), Chris Klieman (2014-2018), and Matt Entz this year.

"Since 2011, the North Dakota State Bison have a record of 121–8 (.933) which included a record 22 game playoff win streak, making them the most successful college football program in Division I this decade. The Bison are 166–35 (.826) since moving to Division I in 2004."

If the decision makers in college football can say with a straight face that is the 4th best team in FBS, then the whole situation sucks.

I'm not saying anything against LSU (for once) but this drubbing really, really makes me want a revamp of the playoff system. I have nothing new to offer to that desire, same thing a lot of fans want. The same thing that everyone points towards March Madness and FCS (and lower).

They were the fourth best team. Maybe Wisconsin is a little better. But, there are three teams that are so much better than the other teams that you could send anyone out there to die this season. I think there is no team they could have played that would have been that close.

LSU was probably gonna dismantle anybody they played in the first round. Texas, Auburn, and Alabama gave them their toughest games and LSU still was scoring 40+ on everybody except Auburn.

Clemson's gonna be a stiff test as they've only allowed 20+ to one opponent and that was Ohio State. The flip side is that offensively they can struggle against lesser competition so if LSU gets ahead early and fast, this could be a beat down if Clemson can't answer offensively.

I've not attended a game at my alma mater in a few years, just too busy. Plus, after the 0-12 season, I decided "this is supposed to be entertainment. I'm not entertained if they lose every single game." I got accustomed after that to just not going that by the time they turned it around, the games are available on ESPN3 and other streaming sources.

They keep raising the ticket prices and due to recent success, parking is a total pain in the ass. I used to have the PERFECT spot by the band room that for some reason no one ever took from like 1999-2010. Then all of a sudden, it's always occupied when I get there.

We traveled to an FCS @ Sunbelt game one time. We had to park nearly a mile away for a mid-teir instate Sunbelt, and fortunately it was free parking.

Next year we play @ LSU and if 2004 is any indication (I took my sister to the Troy @ LSU game for her birthday) hell no I'm not going. We had to park an astounding distance away, stuck in traffic for two hours just to leave the parking lot, got rerouted by the traffic cops (this was before GPS would automatically help you) and got lost.

More and more these places are starting to charge for parking in even far away places on campus, which if you're a state university, screw you my taxes are already paying for this cement. I'm cool with paying to park in a private parking facility.

Stadium experiences really aren't that great anymore. Your video board isn't luring me in if I have to climb to the third level of a stadium and choose between the ants on the field or the jumbotron, if that's the case I can go home. Stadium bathrooms are disgusting.

A lot of it is very petty, first world, and lazy. But sports at home has evolved into such a much more convenient spectacle, why would I want to go through all that trouble when I can watch the game in my recliner, eat my food, park in my own driveway and use my bathroom.

Plus, most of my college friends have moved on from supporting the team. If I go, it's usually by myself and that's no fun either. At least even in a shitty game having someone to goof with helps.

I have similar complaints about NFL games except you have to pay a lot more to park and walk a LOT further. And the Superdome's upper level is the biggest piece of shit in stadium seating. Every other section has an inclined walkway to the sections and breaks each level 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 (suites are in there somewhere) into halves so if you're in row 1-15 you can use one entrance and if you're in rows 16-3#(?) you can use another one. Not in the 600 section. You have one entrance, at row 1, and the steps are right around knee high so you really get a work out and then there's no easy exit if you need to go to the bathroom up there, you have to trot down 30something rows again. (I think there are SOME portions of the 600 section that are broken up but I haven't been seated there for multiple NCAA & NFL games and a Wrestlemania).

I've only been to one college football game (A Michigan State-Notre Dame game 2 or 3 years back when I was visiting a friend in Michigan) and I was amazed at lack of amenities. Gameday atmosphere was incredible but once you're inside the stadium, I think the level of concessions and seat comfort isn't even comparable to a minor league stadium let alone the NFL.

And that is a huge Division 1 school. The stadiums of teams that Harley and SFH are into are probably just glorified high school stadiums, I'm assuming! I think that probably has more than a little to do with drop in attendance.

For the last three years our visiting opponents have been dressing in glorified tents with floors and portable plumbing, but still tents. We're upgrading the athletic building to connect to the actual stadium and with that we'll have proper visitor facilities again. We had hosted a D2 a few years prior to this nonsense and they were impressed with everything we had, and we're lower level FCS so I could only imagine what those student-athletes have at home at the D2.

A rival FCS team, in 2003, hosted us and long and short, I got into something bad at lunch and spent most of halftime and the third quarter in their restroom facilities, staring down all manner of critters and cobwebs. You would think that wouldn't be an issue with people going in and out of the stalls on a regular basis, but yeah each time I had an attack, I chose a different stall, and more insects & arachnids kept me company.

The ONLY saving grace of late for my alma mater's stadium is that the Manning family has been pumping millions into our turf, locker rooms, dorms, and similar since they host their passing academy and want the counselors (generally every top FBS and FCS QB in the country along with 5-10 NFL players) to be comfortable. We literally have a multi-million dollar turf and press box...and 10 cent seating. Fuckers.(nah for real good guys despite media portrayals, I'll real life yell at someone to defend Payton, Eli, Cooper, and Archie as people. Eli just needs to watch where the fuck he's walking).
