Title: 2019 NFL Week 2: No News is Good News
Post by: Kotzenjunge on September 11, 2019, 01:43:13 PM
Can we have a quiet week where only what happens on the field shapes the news? Please?

How about some good news? A Melvin Gordon breakthrough would be nice.

Speaking of injury news, RB Derrius Guice is likely to have surgery and miss 6-8 weeks.

Also the Chargers signed WR Anthony Johnson in case Mike Williams can't go and they also lost Hunter Henry for a while. This team could end up being really bad if injuries keep piling up.

It is most definitely the year of the WR. There are 7 or 8 first round quality WR's and two of them near top five level.

Patriots have a chance to score 56+ this week but I think they could also be in for a tougher game than most people expect.

#1: Brian Flores as HC. Ex-Pats assistants know the Patriots offense/defense backwards and forwards and usually have success against Belichick even if their overall team seasons suck (see Patricia last year with Detroit).

#2: It's on the road at Miami where the Patriots notoriously struggle for whatever reasons. Much like when they go to Denver on the road, they just tend to struggle more often than not. The Dolphins are 5-1 in their last 6 home games against the Patriots extending back to the 2013 season.

#3: Ryan Fitzpatrick has proven he can dice up New England regardless of the team around him. Fitzpatrick's thrown at least 2 TD in his last 7 of 8 games against New England, the exception being his 8/21 Week 16 performance in 2016. He also has thrown for 270+ in 7 of his last 8 against them as well.

It has to be time for him to at least consider retiring in the near future.   His style of play means he's taken more punishment than any other QB in the league, and it's starting to look like he'll never get back to 100% again.

Cam's also had the shoulder injury/surgery from this offseason, which he still seems to be coming back from. Outside of 2015, he's never been a great passing threat as he's long lived by his ability to run and truck defenders.

I think we could see Cam retire in the next few years. He doesn't need the money, will be 31+ starting next season, and has already endured one shoulder injury along with a foot injury earlier this offseason. If his running ability gets taken away from him, I don't think he's a good enough pocket passer to change his style of QB to that and be nearly as effective.

Apparently a lot of the Miami Dolphins defensive players (including CB Minkah Fitzpatrick) are pissed at being asked to play multiple positions within the defense as Flores tries to build that side.

https://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-dolphins/fl-sp-dolphins-minkah-fitzpatrick-trade-request-20190913-qibwyzqvhrd5hpxgf45tkqcrea-story.html

"Fitzpatrick’s request also comes roughly a month after his mother, Melissa, clamored on social media that her son should be playing free safety. In Flores’ defense, Fitzpatrick plays the rover, hybrid defensive back role (aka the Pat Chung NE Role) that calls for him to cover tight ends and slot receivers.

Fitzpatrick played in 49 of 77 defensive snaps against the Ravens, about 64 percent of Miami’s plays. But he could see increased playing time against the Patriots."

Kinda sad that the Dolphins' Key to the Game according to CBS is "Well, the team can't do anything but it's hot and it might rain later so maybe that will do something."

I think the Giants can beat the Dolphins but other than that I'm struggling to think of another game they can win this season  I guess against the Redskins or Jets. Maybe. I don't see how they possibly get past 3 wins

Lol Giants/Pats on Thursday Night on 10/10. Point spread will probably be close to 20

Raiders looking good, definitely motivated by the whole shitty situation, and "Morally bankrupt" Patriots have a 2nd chance at 19-0.

I think Brown is most likely a garbage human being, but he's not alone by any means. This whole story would have never seen the light of day if he had just paid her off the 2 Million she was looking for:

I believe so. I felt coming into 2019 that this would be his last season after they were dogshit without two world-beating skill position players who had propped him up for a while. Pittsburgh needs a fresh start. New Orleans though? Big difference. They're capable now and are legitimate contenders. Brees being out for a while might mean the Saints are simply division champions rather than having a first round bye, but I'm a lot more upbeat about the Saints situation than the Steelers.

Yeah, those two sentences don't go together. And now that there's been a story written about his issues with domestic disturbances and exposing his dick to another woman who was doing a painting at his house, this should be taken much more seriously (when it already should have been serious enough to suspend him indefinitely, but I digress).

Looking for some fantasy advice and I don’t see a general fantasy thread -

(Trading) Matt Ryan for Kyler Murray and Melvin Gordon? I’ve been starting Lamar Jackson the past two weeks and might run with him this season.

Edit: Lamar Jackson, not Miller.

Gordon is not coming back until week 10

Well Lamar Miller has a torn ACL so he is getting you nothing.

Melvin Gordon might be back by mid-season. I'd probably do that trade especially since your RB situation must be bleak if you have been starting a guy out for the season.

Also, Kyler is prob better than Ryan

Either way, you need to dig around on the waiver wire for RBs. If you have no bench room to hold Gordon than trading for him won't help.

RIP Trevor Siemien.

Theismann'd by Myles Garrett. At least he drew the penalty.

And he managed to walk off!

Jets pass two straight plays in the red zone needing 2 yards for a first down. Hand it off to Bell. That's what you paid him for. Your 3rd string QB's arm is going to get you that first down. Adam Gase is an idiot.

Kind of a risky trade for the Steelers. Ben could be done. They're almost giving Rudolph a vote of confidence for 2020 based on one game. Steelers' probably will have a top 15 pick. Just not a great move for a team trending down.

Great move for the Dolphins though. Fleece these desperate dumb teams.

Tanking works.  I love what Miami is doing.  They are going to be really good in 3 years.

Tanking absolutely is not proven to work. It's the only thing the Dolphins can do now, but do we remember how long the Browns failed for? Or the Lions? They're going to draft a QB and have him play with the same kind of talent that was playing for the expansion Houston Texans.

It doesn't matter what they draft or who they sign. You can sign the best players in free agency, and any given time it could turn out like Trumaine Johnson or Albert Haynesworth. We're talking about building a 53 man roster from absolute dookie.

The trade today is one they should have made, but the strategy as a whole has no basis in reality. Tua or anyone else could blow their ACL in one random OTA and you're stuck with having improved your team somewhat (although this is arguable as they recently made the playoffs) and not have gotten the player you wanted.

Daniel Jones officially named starter for Sunday v Bucs. Eli Manning era is over. I'll always love that dorky little goober.  Thanks for 2007 and 2011.  You provided maybe the best moments of my life as a sports fan

Obviously they still need to make the right picks and it has to be a draft with gamechangers available, but even just getting the QB can instantly turn a team around.  It worked for the Colts.  It is working for the Browns.  Even the Cards look like they are on the right track.  It works.

Miami will get that talent with all the extra picks they are getting, provided they draft well.

Miami now has 5 1st Round Picks over the next 2 NFL Drafts. That's a hell of a way to try and quickly re-build a roster.

I agree with 909, tanking does not prove to work in the NFL. If the Dolphins prove to be too much of a losing culture this year they will not get the players they want during FA next year whether they have $130 million or not.

I think I like the trade for both teams; definite risk both ways. Don't think the Steelers make the playoffs so this will be a Top 20 or better pick, that said all of the years of control for Fitzpatrick gives him value to Pittsburgh, and I think at least 6 teams finish worse than Pittsburgh no matter how Rudolph plays out.
