Title: Best Podcasts out there
Post by: Anakin Flair on March 20, 2012, 01:49:57 PM
Taking off from a comment by KingPK:

What podcasts that you listen to do you think everyone should give a try? I download news video podcasts (Rachel Madddow and NBC nightly, sometimes Morning Joe), but I know those aren't everyone's cup of tea. One podcast I would recommend, though, is Now Playing. A really good movie review podcast with an  emphasis on horror, they tend to focus on series. For free, they have the Nightmare on Elm Street series, Friday the 13th series, and Halloween Series among others. They have also done Sci-fi (Star Trek) and are currently working through all of the Marvel movies (including luminaries like the Corman FAntastic Four, Generation X, both Captain America TV movies, Doctor Strange tv movie, etc) leading up to Avengers. Also later this year they will be doing a donation drive- I think for $15 you get all of the Batman movies, and for $25 you get that plus the Spielberg alien movies.

Well, that's enough shilling for one night. Any other good podcasts out there?

For any history buffs, Hardcore History by Dan Carlin is a great podcast (though updated infrequently). Did a three part series on the Punic Wars, six part series on the Fall of the Roman Republic, and my absolute favorite a four part podcast on Eastern Front in WWII. Horrifying, nightmarish stuff, but absolutely fascinating. Guy does a tremendous job putting you in era and setting, and as cliche as it is, makes history come alive.

He charges a couple of bucks for the older shows, but they're entirely worth it.

Second to the Pod F Tompkast although the format might not be for everyone.

Plenty of good stuff on Earwolf especially Comedy Bang Bang and Who Charted?

Thank you sir.

I'm an avid Doug Loves Movies fan.  I even bought the Leonard Maltin app to play at home.

Earwolf has a ton of great podcasts like the How Did This Get Made one I mentioned and Sklarbro Country.  HENDERSON!!

Various different shows under Kevin Smith's Smodcast brand are worthwhile, although some of them do require you to listen to a bunch of different episodes before you get all their running jokes and general tone.

I'm listening to their Saw 3D review now, and I'm not terribly impressed.  Their analysis is pretty shallow, to the point where they refer to the Saw series as "thinking man's horror films".  And looking down their list of ratings, I seriously question their tastes in general.  They give all-thumbs-up to Saw III, Star Trek: Generations, X-men III, Quantum of Silence, Hostel 2, and both Human Centipedes; and entirely negative scores to Back to the Future part 2, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, Pineapple Express, and The Thing from Another World.  They actually expect people to PAY for this stuff?  Why?  They're not very insightful, they're not even trying to be funny, and they're complete nobodies.  They sound like they're just random people having a conversation about a movie, which is hardly something worth plunking down dollars for.

If you like Survivor, I'd recommend Rob Has a Podcast from Rob Cesternino.  Usually does podcasts with fellow Survivor alumni.

I enjoy Bryan Alvarez' 3000 podcasts per week.  Really recommend signing up for Wrestling Observer/F4 Weekly if you don't already subscribe.

More wrestling - The Score's Aftermath podcast is quite enjoyable.

Getting Blanked is a fun general baseball podcast by the Drunk Jays Fans crew.  I've heard they're going to revive the DJF podcast for Blue Jays-centric stuff as well.

Speaking of baseball, anything with Keith Law is worth a listen.  So I guess I'm recommending ESPN's baseball podcast.

Atop the Fourth Wall is more of a videocast, but still good stuff.  Especially History of the Power Rangers, which I'm hoping will have a new episode soon.

The greatest podcast I've ever heard is called Daves of Thunder on the Adam Carolla Ace network.  They canceled it a while back though.  It was NFL.com's Dave Dameshek and TV writer David Feeney and they...I don't even know how to describe it.  One of the more interesting comedy podcasts out there as it wasn't a typical podcast format at all.

Right now I'm kind of addicted to Talking Shit with Jim Jefferies and Eddie Ifft.  Eddie's kind of a douche and not particularly funny, but Jim Jefferies kills on the show.

On the sports side it doesn't get any better than Up and In: The Baseball Prospectus Podcast.  I'd say it's about 80% baseball related and 20% general weirdness.

I listen to a very large chunk of the 5by5.tv (http://5by5.tv) network. It's a lot of Apple/iOS stuff, but they also do more general tech talk here and there, as well as stuff about web design, pop culture, productivity, and even sports.

Mohr Stories is an excellent podcast. LOL funny, espeically when Jim Jeffries was on, which led me to their podcast.

The Film Vault is another, just for the douchiness quotient.

Agree 100%. I listen to Baseball Today and BB America, so I always saw the recommendation, but since most of their podcasts were over two hours I just thought it would be too long. Now I find myself walking more to hear it all. I would say your 80-20 split is right, and the general weirdness is always entertaining.

On that note, what is your preference with podcast length?  The Giant Bombcast is usually 2+ hours, so I can listen to it during an evening of gaming (or split up between a few days), but I find that around an hour is best for most others since I can listen to them while getting ready for work or at least half of it during lunch.

I work in a cubicle all day so for me the longer the better, honestly.

I have a podcast too! EvilEpisodes  I cover horror tv, horror games, as well as horror movies. I got picked up by the horror palace network. http://www.horrorpalace.com (http://www.horrorpalace.com)

On the latest episode the biggest segment was covering The Fly '58 and The Fly '86 and I had Doug Tilley as a guest from dailygrindhouse.com on with us.

I like listening to Now Playing because that guy Artie is such a chode. He'll praise Renny Harlin's direction of Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and trash MARTIN SCORSESE. I think he even defends Howard the Duck. It's amazing.

Since I'm listening to it right now I have to give a shout out to The Nick & Artie show with Nick Dipaolo and Artie Lange.  It's not a podcast per se, but they stream it live on their website and put all the shows up for download.  It's part sports talk and part comedy, 5 days a week from 10pm-1am EST.

The Hollywood Saloon is an excellent podcast covering film history. The have shows on Halloween, ALL the bond series, one discussing the director commentaries, just all kinds of good stuff. And they are involved in the film industry so they sound like they know what they are talking about.

Seconded. That show is just amazing.

Does any other historical podcast come close to Hardcore History? HH is so ridiculously good that listening to some other podcasts (like the history of the byzantium emperors podcast) are just absolutely bland by comparison.

CBC has a bunch of good podcasts. Definitely Not The Opera is a sort of culture podcast that covers a general topic (like 'secrets') and then manages to pump out a good solid hour on it. Spark is a fantastic show about tech trends and society. The Age of Persuasion is a short podcast (30 mins) about different marketing topics, really interesting stuff. Dispatches is a bit closer to traditional news, but it's still worth a listen...it's a collection of in-depth stories from reporters on the ground around the world, covers things in a lot more detail than the usual 2 minute snippet you see on the evening news.

The only podcasts I listen to every week are the aforementioned Rob Has a Podcast, which is about mostly Survivor (which I no longer even watch but I just like the podcast that much), and Football Weekly. I actually listen semi-regularly to a lot of soccer/football podcasts but some of the pundits are UNBEARABLE but Football Weekly only has one scouse guy that very regularly comes on that annoys me. Gabriele Marcotti is a fucking tool and ruined whatever podcast that is that he hosts, but the panel was good. The Score has a good one, The Footy Show, but if Kristian Jack is on it, I'm done. I hate that dude.

Ex-girlfriend really liked Battleship Pretension, but I'm not a big movie person so it didn't always interest me. But they seem to have a decent following and get some recognisable celebrity guests from time to time.

Kevin and Bean (Puts out 5 podcasts a week.)

Hollywood Babble-on (Kevin Smith & Ralph Garmen, and only once a week.)

Penn's Sunday school (Still 50/50 on this one and it's only once a week.)

Colt Cabana's Art of Wrestling (Once a week podcast)

This podcast has had more laugh out loud moments than any other I've listened to. If you haven't listened before start from the beginning because there are alot of inside jokes. JRE, Carolla, Icehouse Chronicles and Mohr are the others I listen to consistently.

There's some random cast featuring random dudes streaming on Smodcast at the moment.  I dunno who these two guys are, but apparently one of them worked on Twilight: Breaking Dawn in some capacity.  They've literally spent the last thirty minutes, if not more, bitching and moaning and whining about how mean and unfair the critics were to this movie.  They're the kind of ignorant amateurs who know just enough about a subject (in this case, film criticism) to think they know a lot, when in reality they barely know jack shit.

They're desperately listing a bunch of different arguments and talking points about how/why the critics are wrong, in a shotgun pattern where they're just praying that something will hit.  "Some critics liked it!" and "legit critics liked it" and "the critics have their own agenda against us" and "all of Pauline Kael's disciples liked it (the words "White, Armond" go unmentioned)" and "RottenTomatoes is biased against us" and "the ugly reviews came after press screenings where everyone loved it, so clearly the critics are lying" and "kids love the movie, and they're the real audience" and "not just kids love the movie, some adults too!" and finally of course "well it made a bunch of money, so fuck anyone who claims it could possibly be bad".

I can't stop listening to this bullshit!  They're so fascinatingly wrong.

EDIT: apparently the show is called "Team Jack", featuring Jack Morrissey and Greg Yolan, whoever they are.

The Flop House Podcast is one of my faves. It predates How Did This Get Made by about four years but doesn't get the same attention. I love both podcasts though.

I'll second Retronauts as well. The old 1Up feed and the current version are both fun listens.

It's been mentioned in the Wrestling folder but the Place To Be Podcast is great. The Kevin Kelly episodes are really interesting listens.

Ironically, I'm not much of a fan of the Place to Be podcast except when Kevin Kelly is on to walkthrough his WWF years. Really good stuff.

I recently got into the Review-A-Wai podcast with John Pollack & Wai Ting. They review old wrestling ppvs and some dvds. Ting is really laid back while Pollack is more or less a Bryan Alvarez clone. Either way, since they're in their 20s, they provide a fresh perspective to some of the older shows when they weren't following wrestling at the time.

I enjoy How Did This Get Made, but it's only a new episode every two weeks.

About Last Night with Adam Ray and Brad Williams has been my favorite show lately. One of the few laugh out loud shows I listen to.

Chewin' It is hit and miss. It's pretty much Mac and Farva from Super Troopers just telling stories. When it's good it's very good, but when they have a bad guest or things just aren't working then it can be a chore to get through

I'm starting to enjoy We Hate Movies more than How Did This Get Made. Minimum commercials and a new episodes every week. The four hosts aren't famous so they can dig deeper with their hate and it's hilarious. They tend to do more obscure movies and horror movies than HDTGM. And, you get some wrestling references and they already did No Holds Barred.

The six or so episodes where they rag on James Belushi and any episodes where they do a Wilford Brimley or Gary Busey movie are amazing.

That's like the fifth episode of an extremely low budget podcast that has 148 episodes. They got the format down later on.

I never really notice audio problems on podcasts, but their live shows are unlistenable.

Making a "good" quality podcast doesn't cost a ton of money these days.  The expenses to host the show and website(optional) might add up if the show gains a good listener base but the idea that you need expensive audio equipment to make it sound decent is not true.  Most people I have guest hosted with are using usb headsets and their shows sound just fine.

I did my research whenever I was doing some lame wrestling podcast that practically nobody listened to.  If you're gonna speak even semi-professionally about a subject, you should know what you're talking about.  Hell, at times they're complaining about things which even the movie clearly explained.  And the audio on that show was indeed at the same quality level as my aforementioned lame wrestling podcasts which we did on Skype and with me using an ancient ten-dollar microphone, which still sounded better than that if one of my teammates did some editing and sweetening work on the track afterwards.  I'm glad that those guys apparently got better with time, cuz they needed to.

The latest one is just glorious with Daly, Tompkins, Matt Besser and a couple of others.  Latest CBB with Daly is bonkers too, interested to see if they do plan on doing a second part (where surely Daly will have to flip between multiple characters very rapidly)

A) doing a podcast doesn't mean you're obligated to read a book
B) doing a podcast doesn't make you a millionaire

It truly depends on the topic and focus of the show. How Did This Get Made is one that makes perfect sense not to know the subject too intimately because the average movie goer does little to no research.

However, if a podcast like Retronauts doesn't know its subject it is much more egregious and would be awful.

Well that feels pointless now. The first episode was amazing. 2 and 3 were hit and miss.

Eh I kinda assumed it'd be a limited run (perhaps they said that in the pilot bit they dropped, can't remember), I don't think he could do too many episodes with the same characters without the jokes running thin and having to come up with a new character every week is a bit much.
Still it's 15ish hours extra free comedy to listen to.  I quite enjoyed 2 as well (yeah 3 was a bit meh) - and again I heartily recommend 4.   Plus 5 is Don Dimello and Marrisa Wompler (plus Jason Mantzoukas which sounds like it could be rather good)

I've been listening to Fatman on Batman from the beginning. I'm probably 16 episodes in. I like it a lot, but have some complaints.

I get that Smith is a smoker, but in the second episode with Walt, you can hear his lighter strike just about every five minutes. It's very distracting, especially when a coughing fit follows things up.

There was also an episode where he was talking about The Dark Knight Rises, and it's said from the beginning that it's going to be a spoiler podcast. And every time he's about to talk about something else in the movie he keeps blurting out that it's a spoiler. Then after a while takes the angry stance of "Fuck you if you're mad about spoilers. You should have known by now what this episode is." ...I think the only thing anyone's mad about is hearing his yell out spoiler every few minutes and getting mad about people that aren't even in the conversation with him.

Otherwise I'm really liking the show thus far.

I'm still liking Andy Daly's show. But seemingly every time a woman appears the show just gets worse.

The finale of Andy Daly's podcast is one of the best.  Scott Aukerman's attempt at an Irish accent is magical.

Edit: Oh wow, the second half with the Irishmen and limerick contest propels it to the best of the series.

As a means of context, my idea of a perfect "sports" podcast would be somewhere between The Tony Kornheiser Show (http://www.espn980.com/shows/the_tony_kornheiser_show.php), and His and Hers (http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/podcast/archive?id=8898044), only with less talk about football.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about; good lookin' out!

I decided to go back and start from the beginning... I was hooked when Paul Shirley, out of nowhere, just decides to say, "I think, generally, David Stern is a shitty human being," as nonchalantly as if he were talking about the merits of the chest pass. I just started listening to the second episode, and Halpern's theory for what really happened in Eagle, CO is amazing.

Okay, so last night I was listening to Season 2 Episode 3 of Short Corner, the one where they're talking about nepotism in the NBA, and Halpern digresses to tell an anecdote about how he was able to get seats to Bulls/Sonics in 96, because he had some kind of hook up, and was clowning on one of the Bulls players (I want to say Haley?) who was designated to be Rodman's "handler."

He then went on a further digression about some friend of his who is an actress, and basically got a 75-episode run on some "hit" sitcom in order to "babysit" the star (or one of the stars) of the show, whom he describes as "a mess." According to him, his friend was cast to do a guest spot, and the star really liked her, so they made her a recurring character on the show, just so that she could be the star's "handler."

My first thought on hearing the star described as a mess was Charlie Sheen but, unless Halpern was deliberately obfuscating about how many episodes, no woman has appeared in around 75 episodes of 2.5 Men (Melanie Lynskey has appeared in less, and Marin Hinkle, Holland Taylor and Conchata Ferrell have all appeared in significantly more; no other actress is even in the ballpark). Anybody have any idea what show he's talking about?

His first show was with Edge, he's had RVD, Matt Hardy, Sabu, Gail Kim and others on. I HIGHLY recommend Paul F. Tompkins' new show Spontaneanation.  Basically he has guests on who improvise a scene based on a topic given by a guest he interviews for the first 20 or so minutes.  It's more structured and laid back than Comedy Bang Bang which is actually good because CBB can be really good or really shitty (HORATIO SANZ FUCKING SUCKS) depending on who is on it.

I'm not going to consider anything I do to be the best of anything but I didn't know where else to put this. I know there are some posters around here that do their own podcasts and while I did do one before it was hard to keep a solid schedule due to the real lives of myself and my co-host at the time, but now I have started a new one (as seen in my sig). A Horrible Premise is a game show about making up fake TV shows and it's been much more fun than I thought it would be. I have a small group of folks that play the contestants, a few of which used to be posters at the old board and others that are comedy writers/stand up acts, and the most recent episode (and hopefully future ones) had a former WWE Creative guy.

My audio editing skills aren't fantastic (mainly due to my current hardware set-up not giving me super great audio to start with) but I feel like the content is good enough. Episodes go as long as they have to/we let them which makes for some being under an hour and some being closer to two. The most recent contains lots of Michael P.S. Hayes for reasons I don't remember. Only five in the can so far but I am hopeful people like listening to it as much as I like making it.

Bumping this thread because I didn't think this news warranted one of its own, and I couldn't find a more recent relevant thread:

So, I'm listening to the most recent episode of "Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men" and, apparently, they are breaking up. I don't even know if it really counts as 'news', per se, since I feel like the writing was on the wall when Jay came out as trans, but I'll be interested in seeing how the quality of the podcast will be affected, since they said that they plan to keep doing it, but also said that Jay plans to move to NYC, while Miles remains in Portland.

I started watching The Sopranos again this week and wanted to see if there were any podcasts about it.  There's only really one (No Fuckin' Ziti) but the first episode was pretty decent.

I've kind of rotated in a bunch of new (non-wrestling) podcasts:

- Dumb People Town: Basically Sklarbro County under a new name.  The Sklar Brothers and Dan Van Kirk joke about stupid things stupid people (usually localized around the Florida area) do.

- History That Doesn't Suck/Tides of History/How It Began: I've been searching for a good history podcast that updates much more frequently than Hardcore History and these three are pretty good.  Tides and How it Began are roughly around the same era right now (17th - 18th Century Europe) and the other is on the American Revolution.

- Dreamgun Film Reads: This one is fucking hilarious.  Famous movie scripts are rewritten and comedians act them out without reading them first in front of a live audience.  I only got into this one over the weekend and I've devoured all 12 episodes they've done.

- Sports? with Katie Nolan: Pretty much the only sports podcast I listen to and it's mainly because roughly 30% of each episode is devoted to sports.  The rest discusses Katie's Fortnite addiction, making brackets of various pop culture subjects and making fun of producer Dopp.  Oh, and probably the best ad reads of any podcast I listen to.

Old standbys: We Hate Movies, Giant Bombcast, Giant Beastcast (I've liked the Beastcast much more lately and I skip through WHM episodes whose movies I'm not interested in)

Got a ton of podcasts in heavy rotation, the only "mainstream" ones being The Right Time with Bomani Jones, the aforementioned Sports? with Katie Nolan, Cheap Heat and The Masked Man Show. I also listen to Three Guys On and Misandry with Marcia and Rae, which are ostensibly current events podcasts, hosted by comedians, the latter placing a heavy emphasis on topics that would generally be considered feminist (except that they don't really come out often enough to count as 'current': 3GO comes out weekly, and Misandry is more bi-monthly-ish).

Most of the rest of the podcasts I listen to tend to be of the "blackety-black" variety: The Black Guy Who Tips, The Interracial Jawn, most of the shows on the MTR Network, Black Astronauts, Where's My 40 Acres?, The Spann Report, Project Fandom... all shows that discuss current events, pop culture, TV, movies, music, sports, etc., but exclusively from the black perspective.

Also, since they don't talk current events (and are therefore not time-sensitive), I stockpile episodes of Jay and Miles X-Plain the X-Men and The Playable Characters Podcast, for when the other shows go on hiatus/holiday.

Just got out of seeing Last Podcast on the Left live in Boston
They did an entire section on the Montreal Screwjob, connected Casey Anthony and OJ Simpson to the Illuminati and MK Ultra, and went over the Pope Lick Monster.

Suffice it to say, it was incredible.

I finally started listening to LPOTL. I’d tried a couple times in the past and just couldn’t get in to it. Finally made myself see an episode through and it just snowballed from there.

Added some new shows to the rotation:

These Are Their Stories: Discusses episodes of all the versions of Law and Order (mostly SVU and "original recipe") including the real-life cases they are based on with a comedic bent.

Our Fake History, The Constant: History podcasts that talk about weird moments in history (like the history of Madagascar and how Germany wanted it to be basically a dumping ground for Jews before they came up with the plan they carried out) or if mythical figures like King Arthur actually existed.  Really interesting stuff.

Seincast: A Seinfeld recap podcast.  They sometimes get into Comic Book Guy levels of detail of the episode, but it's still entertaining.

I'll check out Office Ladies when it debuts.  I've pretty much stopped listening to the Giant Bombcast and I'm even skipping through the Beastcast more; I can only listen to Dan Ryckert's "most aloof man in the world" gimmick so much.  Plus, their e-mail segment has devolved into shit like "If you had to choose between (stupid thing A) and (stupid thing B)" what would you do?"

Does anyone listen to Doughboys? It's a podcast about chain restaurants, for anyone that hasn't heard of it. I enjoy it so much, it's the only Patreon I've ever joined, to get access to their bonus episodes.

I had to axe Talking Simpsons. Ever since Chris left the show Bob and Henry’s smugness has been running wild. I’ve been hate listening to it for some time now and I’m annoyed with myself for not doing this sooner.

My brother and I bought tickets for Last Podcast on the Left’s December live show in Detroit. No idea what to expect from it.

NOTE: in my previous post about trying to listen to LPOTL before and not getting in to it. That was actually night of the living podcast that I couldn’t like. I avoided Last Podcast for the longest time getting the shows confused.

LPOTL live is one of the greatest live events I've ever been to. It's a smorgasbord of the recurring bits from their podcast, and you can see Marcus and Ben try not to laugh at Henry every few minutes.

I started listening to it this year despite living in Australia and having hardly any chains. I should sign up to the Doughboys Doubles soon.

Just listening to the Quiznos episode with Hayley Joel Osment and he's been a terrific guest.

Saw Last Podcast on the Left tonight in Detroit. What a delight. Pretty much a 90 minute more rehearsed hodgepodge version of the show. But I was smiling from ear to ear all night and laughed my ass off more than a few times.

Yeah. Graphic videos of
Someone squeezing some stuff out of an open wound on their breast
Laser surgery on someone’s private areas removing some weird gravel looking growth.
And maggots that had infested someone ear.

Vs videos of monkeys wearing clothes.

I stumbled onto a show called The Atomic Hobo.  I didn't know I needed a demure, soft-spoken Scottish woman talking about how governments planned to deal with millions of dead after an atomic attack in my life.

My favorite podcast. They're so funny I'm thinking of subscribing to their Patreon.

Do it.  $8 for their top tier is a ridiculous value for how much stuff they put out.  I don't even listen to The Nexus because I don't care about Star Trek but everything else is good.

Favorite podcast (that I think I found here). They get my $8 a month. You get so much extra content. I’m way way behind on Nexus. I’d usually just watch a YouTube recap or trailer of the episode to get the gist of it first, cause I’m not watching that stuff.

Anyone else listen to Why I Hate This Album? It’s become a top show of mine over the last year or so.

It's been my favorite podcast since 2013 when I got tired of everyone's gimmick on How Did This Get Made. The four hosts have amazing chemistry, bring something different, and are all funny in their own way. I agree that their patreon is one of the best around and they produce so much content. I do miss when they would do more obscure movies that I never heard of like Kill Crazy, Free Enterprise, Hider In The House, and Baby Cakes, but I understand they are getting more popular and have to do movies that would bring in new listeners.

In my iTunes feed, I have a whole bunch of their show and only started listening to those of the movies I watched. I'll get to the other ones later. The Space Cowboys and Batman (1989) are my favorite ones they've covered so far.

Batman 89 was one of my least favorites. Sometimes they will just fall in love with a bit and hammer it well past death.

My personal favorite episodes off the top of my head are

One Magic Christmas
Next of Kin
The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking
Hard Target
Sabotage
Moonrtrap

If it’s a movie you’re not super familiar with just watch a trailer and maybe a couple YouTube clips.

If you're into True Crime, the episodes on The Dating Game Killer (4 of 6 have been posted) from the Hollywood True Crime series is absolutely riveting listening. The voice over woman is fantastic too, so silky smooth.
