WWF WRESTLING CHALLENGE Bastion Booger vs Rick Martel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6X_GcpUMBjs#ws)
A heel Vs heel match between Bastion Booger and Rick Martel. Whoever booked this is actually kind of brilliant. Martel's selling and JR and Heenan's commentary here is cracking me up.

Don Frye is the only celeb I've ever requested a picture with . . . he granted it. Him double-fisting beers all night mellowed him out.

--------------------------

I love this Haku/Barbarian vs Kato/Fuji match. Heenan gets some face heat. Fuji gets to be a complete asshole. Haku/Barbarian look a bit incompetent in how long it took them to beat a pseudo jobber and his manager.

Macho Man Randy Savage vs Jushin Liger - New Japan 07.17.96 WWE WCW (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9_K_v7RsUo#)

Should I have been aware of this?  Because I wasn't.  Not a great match, not even really a good match, but an interesting clash of superstars from different cultures.  I didn't like how Savage conveniently stopped selling the knee for the finish, however.

In The Dumb But Awesome Fantasy Booking thread I made a joke about Great Khali and Ric Flair being in the same match---not knowing that they actually had a one on one match! And it was for the World title no less!

Rick Martel vs. Ax from Demolition, from Piledriver, Show #1 1993 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ormVLkUPqAQ#)

I saw this on the sidebar of another video and thought it was weird that Ax and The Model had a singles match in WWF then I realized it was from an indy show. Had no idea Martel was working the indies in '93. Wasn't he still with WWF?

I believe between the Rumble and the fall of 93 he was doing the indy circuit. One thing I noticed from reading old WONs from that time period (and my memory - though at the time I just assumed they hadn't been on TV or something) is WWF seemed to have a something of a "rotating door" schedule with their undercard talent.

I totally bought into the Luchadores being a new legit group of future stars after reading the WWF mag pushing them.  I thought these 2 were going to be a top team (look at the sub-par competition at this point) Plus Hector Garza was suppose to be "the Spanish Shawn Micheals",  By this point Superstars was off syndication so from Sept 96 til March of 97 I had no WWF to watch, so I suppose I was ready to accept anything as awesome.

The first time in nearly 14 YEARS I have seen this promo.  Undertaker cutting a promo about he and Big Show driving into the middle of the desert on motorcycles.  This has to be one of the most nonsensical promos in history:

Man, this sucks! For months, I've been afraid to even come in this thread, because the pc I've been using is such a piece of shit, that it can''t even load a page with multiple embedded links without seizing up, and crashing the browser. I finally get a chance to borrow a computer that can load the page, and half the links are dead!

Jericho talks about this promo in his second book. Taker basically shot on him and buried him because Jericho (unintentionally) did the same to him. I remember this promo when it aired live and wondered why Taker went from talking about going to the desert with Big Show to talking about having more shower time than Y2J.

Rick Martel & Brooklyn Brawler vs George & Shunji Takano (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2PCuGf84So#)

So odd...

1> Martel and Steve Lombardi teaming up despite conflicting gimmicks...and conflicting places on the card

2> Brawler on an over seas tour?

I love how Martel goes into babyface fire mode early on only to remember he's The Model and immediately strikes the pose.

Only in wrestling can you tell a guy "your gimmick is to go out there and tell him why he sucks" then get buried because you told the guy why he sucks.

This is interesting. Savage jobs to Rick Steiner in Japan in 2000. Both men were still under contract by WCW. Steiner was apparently a replacement for Goldberg. This was one of Savage's last matches.

Weirdest part of that is "What Up Mach?" era Macho Man doing babyface Macho Man mannerisms. Although I guess he might have done them in '98/'99 WCW. I've just blocked everything he did after 1997 out of my head for the most part.

I'm pretty sure Savage didn't make another appearance in WCW after the match with Rodman in Road Wild '99 but was under contract. He made that quick cameo on Thunder during the Millionaire's Club/New Blood feud but that was it.

According to the description of the video I posted, he worked a random house show against Sid Vicious in 2000.

Why didn't WCW use him during that hiatus anyway?

Looking at Cawthon's site, Savage made one more appearance on WCW TV in '99 after that. He returned the night after Halloween Havoc '99 and cut a worked shoot on Vince Russo and talked about how The Powers That Be wouldn't hunt him down like they did to Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan. He also mentioned he was looking to pass the torch to the next Macho Man. Then he never appeared again because lolVinceRusso.

Subtopic: Let's discuss who could have been Vince Russo's hilariously bad choice for Macho Man's replacement in '99 WCW?

I thought Duggan and Super Crazy were a team for a little while. But then I just remembered that they were in the Tag Team Gauntlet at New Year's Revolution '07...and the match I just posted was from the day after the last PPV of '07 so they must have been a team (off and on) for a year!

Crazy/Duggan were a recurring team for a surprisingly long team.  Mostly on Heat but they were together maybe like a year and a half.

BorneAgain is right.  Highlanders turned heel on London/Kendrick due to "never getting opportunities".  Feuded with those guys on Heat, really stayed on the B shows because one got injured, the other one had the "Impact Incident" shortly after and they were sparingly used before being Future Endeavored.

Also, the Luger/Vader teamup is something I had never heard about at all before. I didn't realize Vader played a face really at any time in his WCW run, other than turning on the Dungeon of Doom shortly before he was fired.

The sheer number of grey boxes from broken links in this thread makes me a sad panda.  But we need content from something, dammit.  I've been scouring the darkest corners of Youtube recently, and found a few bizarre gems:

Genichiro Tenryu is squashing the Brooklyn Brawler.  Your argument is invalid.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cyg7iq5wV18

Meanwhile, a wrestler-exchange program sends the Yonkers Brawler to All Japan.

The Giants collide.  Andre versus Baba, motherfucker!  Also: Stan Hansen talks!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1pB9Es4pOg

And while we're talking about 1.Stan Hansen, and 2.ECW mainstays inexplicably working for AJPW: here's a super-young Rob Van Dam in Japan.  Point and laugh as he does some Waltman-esque worked karate kicks that Toshiaki Kawada utterly refuses to sell.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sb1jqleaJlI

Back to 'merica, here's Steven William Regal teaching young Bryan Danielson Daniel Bryan everything he will ever know.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_9l8AgA__U

Ric Flair.  Bruiser Brody.  One hour (or close enough).  What do you need, a road map?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2KJ-g-QgMk

Two guys sharing the same thought: "What the fuck is this guy in the ring with me?"  NASH-IMOTO HAPPENS, BABY.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyHLggWAlSk

Didya know Lou Thesz had his last match in the nineties?  No, I said in THE nineties, not in HIS nineties (though he doesn't look too far off).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bkxclbRYMI

You can always count on Onita to book a bizarre list of dudes who make you go "Whoa, THAT guy did exploding barbed-wire?!"  Yes, these respected old veterans of mainstream puroresu apparently decided that this was a good day to get blown the hell up.

One more random mismatch, from New Japan.  Muta, check.  Chono, check.  Liger, why not.  Sabu, sure... wait, what, SABU?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09E5llBUduE

I notice that most of these matches are from Japan.  That's because, well, fuck most wrestling which isn't Japanese.  But anyway, hardcore fans know that the legendary tag-team rivalry of stalwart babyface Mitsuharu Misawa and his beyond-fiery partner Kenta Kobashi had the best matches ever against the "Holy Demon Army" team of the ridiculously stiff Toshiaki Kawada and his big surly stoic backup Akira Taue.  So naturally that leads to... wait, what the fuck, at one point they switched partners?  Uh.  Okay.  Still had a hell of a match.

The EC3 interview where I saw this match linked mentioned a recent ten man tag at an indy show in Cleveland that was EC3, Samoa Joe, DJ Z, Raymond Rowe, and Matt Cross Vs Josh Prohibition, Johnny Gargano, Alex Daniel, and The Young Bucks. NOW that's a good candidate for this thread if there's video of it...

I can't see the video at work, but yeah, that match was pretty nuts. It happened at AIW's Absolution X this past July. Here's a link to the $11.99 digital version of it http://smartmarkvideo.com/promotions/absolute-intense-wrestling/aiw-mp4/aiw-july-10-2015-absolution-x-cleveland-oh-download

Plus, there's the fun fact of having wrestlers contracted to WWE, TNA, ROH, Lucha Underground, and Evolve in one match.

Not a match, but I had no idea Bob Sapp made an appearance in WCW . . .
Actually, Sapp was supposed to eventually debut in WCW as a wrestler.  He'd started training in the Power Plant shortly before they went out of business, and they'd had him working some in NWA Wildside back when they were using it as an unofficial developmental fed.

Huh, had no idea Bossman did some work in Japanese promotions.
More than ya knew:

They were far from the only ones, Memphis did that shit all the time.  Hell, just a few years ago they ran an angle where Tom Savini actually sent Jason Voorhees to take out Jerry Lawler.

Pretty sure he was dead a week or so after this match.
Actually it was closer to a month later; but yeah, not long.

Although ironically this wasn't his last match.  THAT award went to another bout he had later the same night on this show, a tournament final against Jim Duggan of all people:

I'd be surprised to find out you don't know about Bossman in AJPW. It's probably the strongest overall work of his career.

Quote

I was under the impression the horror movie guys in IWA Japan were just Memphis guys bringing their gimmicks overseas. Was this not the case?

A few things:

this is worth watching just to see the styles clashes. Seeing Sting and Terry go at it with UWF legends on the outside is surreal. great match imo.

the fan interaction at 3:28 might be the best fan interaction ever. Even Terry Funk was at a loss for words, you know how crazy that guy must be if the Great Terry Funk is stumped. JR makes some MEAN comments about him, but that was the 80s. Looks like security takes him out after and the fans boo
Spoiler: show
BUT HE COMES BACK

the match itself is classic 'singles stars vs. singles stars' tag team rasslin', made a little shorter for TV to get people hyped for something bigger. Too bad because it's not like they ever pushed this combo, might as well have gone all out here.

The only way that trio could be better is if Gillberg was bumped to have The Patriot (gimmick) reunite with old partner Buff Bagwell to have HACKSAW leading STARS AND STRIPES (tough guy)

From Mexico sometime in 1992.  Andre the Giant (busting out the RED singlet), Canek, and Villano III vs Bad News Allen, Kokina (Yokozuna) and...THE BLACK SCORPION!  It's actually 2 Cold Scorpio under the mask, although the video's thumbnail shows a picture of Flair as the Black Scorpion from 1990.  But seeing Andre and Yoko square off is pretty cool, I think

I somewhat remember this one but figure it is worth sharing here given one of the competitor's newfound recognition in 2018.  From his brief run in WWE with the CWC, Kota Ibushi worked a couple NXT matches.  At that point, Buddy Murphy had dissolved his team with Blake but would work some of the better workers that were adjusting to WWE style such as when he worked the house show loop with Aleister Black when Black was still relatively new to the company.  Not long after this, Murphy faded off into the background until getting his shot on 205 Live this year

I would've had zero knowledge on New Japan back when I would've watched this, so in looking up some about Tanahashi while getting ready for his match against Omega at WK13, I discovered he had been AJ Styles' opponent at Final Resolution back in 2006.

This may be the best place for this.

For some reason went down the rabbit hole of reading about Brian Adams/Crush on Wikipedia.

His final WWF match as Crush was a Shotgun match where all
Members of DOA took on a jobber team that included Marty Garner, Joey Abs and Steve Corino.

IIRC that was during the period where WWF had signed the Hardy Boys and were trying out other OMEGA talent (Garner, Abs). I believe Garner had a couple other on screen matches as well while Abs joined up with the Mean Street Posse later.
