Title: Sports Cards Hobby Thread
Post by: Harley Quinn on April 11, 2013, 09:31:40 AM
Figured this would work best in the Sports Folder.  Inspired by Bored's article and Fazzle's last post (any pictures?).

If anybody wants to discuss card acquisitions, box breaks, etc. it can go in here I guess.

Gonna be scanning a bunch of the cards from my TC break tomorrow probably.  I could post pictures if people wanted?

I probably won't be buying anything else for a while though cause I'm probably gonna lose a nice chunk of change on that case.

I happen to be lucky in that I've got one of the best LCSs in the country though.  If anyone on here knows what The Hobby Box/Cards Infinity is, yeah, I live about 15 minutes from that store.

I'd love to see pictures myself because that's half the fun of box breaking on a board :)  I've heard of them (THB/CI) but what exactly are LCSs?  Local Card Store?

I collect & occasionally do some shows.  Unfortunately, I'm now living about an hour away from the nearest card store.

I'd like to see some pics too, fazzle.

That Russell Wilson card is terrific!

Yeah that's a sick Wilson patch.   That'd basically pay for your break if you were to sell it, and everything else would be free.

(and yeah LCS is Local Card Store/Shop)

I started collecting around 1987. Usually I'd get baseball cards only if the toy store was out of Garbage Pail Kids packs.

I currently have a binder of every MLB and NFL team. I have 2 Saints binders, 1 binder of Drew Brees, 1 binder of Frank Thomas, and multiple complete sets of various sports. I've reduced my buying as of late and instead have been focusing my money on getting existing cards graded.

I've been participating in group submissions on a card website which allows for multiple people to submit cards through one person's account allowing for bargain basement prices. I'll post some pictures later once I figure out what other people would find cool and not my biased opinion (everything).

Incidentally, I know I'm not too much on the "in" group here but if anyone is interested in getting some cards graded on the cheap I should know something in the next month or so about another submission for around $7/card 45 day service through BGS if anyone is interested.

I was a big card collector in the 90s and have basically all of them still. Bad part is it's when they were overprinting like crazy so they're probably not worth much.

Just got a chance to scan in some of the better/cooler hits from my case, gonna list them along with my estimated value (cause Beckett is pretty worthless nowadays)  I'm gonna put it in spoiler tags cause it wound up being a bunch of pictures

Spoiler: show

First the 1/1 of Travis Leslie.   Being that it's...you know, Travis Leslie and not someone worth a damn, I have no clue on the value of this card.   $30-$40 probably?  Too bad it wasn't Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving, cause then it'd be around a $3000 card.   Also, for those who aren't aware, last season's rookies are still considered rookies in the 2012/13 cards due to them not really getting proper rookie cards last year because of the labor despute.

Metta Green parallel, probably around an $80 card, might go up in value a few bucks if the Lakers take the 8 seed.

Anthony Davis rookie auto, most likely the most expensive card of the break at around $90-$100
(http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q219/fazzbug/img456_zps1a3b0845.jpg)

Jim Jackson 3 color patch card numbered to 25.  Not really worth alot cause..it's Jim Jackson.   But I like the look of the patch, probably my favorite card of the entire break.   Ebay says it's around a $10 card
(http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q219/fazzbug/img457_zpsb1143033.jpg)

Kenneth Faried 2 color patch.  I just really like patches.   $30 card
(http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q219/fazzbug/img454_zpsef60c820.jpg)

Patch love continues with one of Jamaal Wilkes.  Looks like $5 is the max on this one
(http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q219/fazzbug/img463_zpsc578850a.jpg)

Paul Pierce patch.    $10-15ish
(http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q219/fazzbug/img462_zps3ec285c1.jpg)

Dikembe patch, maybe $10
(http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q219/fazzbug/img455_zps65da741c.jpg)

Autos of Dion Waiters and Nikola Vucevic.   Neither one worth a whole lot now, but they should go up, especially Vucevic in a few years when he's one of the top 5 bigs in the game.

LeBron jersey, got 3 of them in the break.   They appear to be about $10-$14 each
(http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q219/fazzbug/img458_zps052007e6.jpg)

James Harden gold parallel, numbered to 25.  Not sure, maybe like $15?

Steve Novak auto to 15.   Not really sure on this one either, but it's pretty low numbered so it's cool.

and a Lillard card numbered to 499, cause at this point pretty much anything Lillard is money.

Cool to see the pics.  I really like the Jackson and Pierce patches.  That Lillard should keep jumping in price right now.  Even his most common cards seem to push around $10 (he was the last base card needed for my Prestige set I was building).

So...blowoutcards forums had a Masters contest going, where you had to pick the winner and their winning score, and if you got it correct you won a box of 2001 SP Authentic golf (the set with Tiger autographed rookie cards)

I just so happened to randomly pick Adam Scott at 9 under.    Hopefully I get something sick of the box!

Good luck with that. I mostly use blowout cards forums to spam my ebay and COMC listings but other than that I just lurk.

I have a shit ton of old baseball cards that I'm cleaning out of my parents' storage room before they move.  Like, a few thousand, mostly from around 1989 to 1991, Topps, Donruss, and Fleer.  Is it worth trying to figure out if some of these are worth anything, or should I just divest myself of them all in bulk?

Unless you have an '89 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card and need to pay for a tank of gas with it, don't bother. That's during the era when cards were super over produced so most aren't worth shit.

Good.  I like money, but I wasn't really keen on spending hours on hours flipping through cards for a sport about which I don't care.

That's about the only card from that time that holds any value. Being Upper Deck's first year helps it out. 86 to 91 is pretty worthless for baseball cards in general. I used to be big into cards. Finally got priced out in 2003 or so.

Surprisingly (to me) that card, I've found, is cheaper to come by than the various attempts to cover it up.

speaking of blowout forums and their contests, I immediately thought of Harley when I saw this contest:

http://www.blowoutcards.com/forums/blowout-cards-promotions-other-cool-stuff/494743-new-blowout-cards-2013-nfl-draft-promo.html

Correctly guess the first 12 picks in the NFL draft and win a box of Five Star football (like a $500 box)

Actually not worth that much.

I busted my 90 Topps factory set just to see if I had the Thomas error without the name on it

I just ordered some boxes, I think after the recent talk here.

Wes really looking at the new Panini Marquee Basketball but decided to hold off for the moment.

Grabbed a box of the 2010-11 Donruss basketball I had been eyeballing, with some old filler that was cheap like 1993 Classic Basketball and 1990-91 Fleer basketball for now.

http://culturecrossfire.com/sports/baseball/cardbored-1988-donruss/

First CardBored article is up, it's the same one I posted on the board just with a different introduction. Yesterday I also did end up getting my 25 pack box of old, worthless baseball cards for potential future articles. Here is what was in the box.

1988 Donruss (added a comment to the article on this pack)
1988 Topps Big Series 1
1989 Bowman
1989 Donruss
1990 Donruss
1990 Fleer (three packs)
1990 Score
1990 Pacific Senior Baseball (yes, really)
1990 Topps Big Series 1
1990 Topps Big Series 2
1990 Topps Traded
1990 Upper Deck
1991 Donruss
1991 Fleer
1991 Leaf Series 2
1991 O-Pee-Chee Premier
1991 Score
1992 Donruss
1992 O-Pee-Chee Premier
1992 Sky Box Triple-A
1992 Topps (two packs)
1995 Topps Bazooka

Anyone with suggestions on what pack I should open for the next article? I'll definitely be doing one on that pack of Senior Baseball league cards (a short lived baseball league featuring 35 and older players) at some point but not right away.

Got my Donruss box last night in the mail.  The 3 pulls were a Lebron Relic #/399, a Birdman autograph #/25 and a Channing Frye relic #/15.

I ended up finding a Marquee box on sale online for about $20 less a few nights later, so that should be here this week.

I also bought into my first box break on eBay today, getting a few different teams cheap for the Panini Contenders set, which I have been getting autographed in person this year at Suns games.  We will see if I get any big hits, as I got the Suns, Wolves, Mavericks, Nuggets, Warriors, Hornets, Pistons and Bucks, which covers some of the better rookies (which are all autographed in that set).  All teams together cost $20.59, so if they pull Davis, Faried or even Barnes, it'd be well worth it.

I don't really like buying into ebay group breaks because:

A) I don't trust mother fuckers on eBay
B) I prefer the gambling element of just getting a random team and having random.org decide which team you get, instead of having to pay more to get a better team.

Good luck with yours though
Title: Re: Sports Cards Hobby Thread
Post by: Baby Shoes on April 20, 2013, 04:23:42 PM
Yeah, I figured I would give it a whirl for once, seeing as I got most teams for $2-$3.  Probably going to regret it later.

Think I was just in high spirits after being at the local card show today.  Most stuff was a ripoff there but I bought a pile for my autographing purposes from a guy selling stuff 10 for $1, as well as a few random ones I thought were decent deals (UD Masterpieces Longoria RC, Jered Weaver UD rookie #/150 for $2 a piece).  Mainly dropped money on the paid signing they had for Andre Dawson, getting a card signed.

The one and only ebay box break I did the team I selected (Saints) had no pulls. In compliance with Ebay policies the seller put all buyers would still be mailed "something" After a month I had not received anything and it was only $6 I was out of. I decided I should still contact the seller anyway. I was still within the 45 day threshold for reporting problems and this gave me two weeks to sort it out.

The seller was very apologetic and sent me 4 cards, 2 rookie autos and 2 low #'d mem cards of my team. So, no real complaints here. I quit while I was ahead though and haven't done anymore.

Post by: Baby Shoes on April 21, 2013, 04:23:40 AM
That's not bad compensation but definitely sounds like you got out ahead.  I've heard there are more reputable places to do these.  Diamondbacks pitcher Brad Ziegler is a collector and has hyped sme crazy pulls he's done on a website that escapes me right now.

I'm guaranteed to at least get a base card of each team too.  We will see.  I figure $20 was worth a gamble, although it sounds likely it will jut be a lesson to not do it again.

Post by: Baby Shoes on April 22, 2013, 02:06:56 PM
Looks like I did ok in the break.  I got a special Anthony Davis insert and a few of the other inserts.

Out of the 4 hits in the box, I feel I got the best.  Whoever got Brooklyn got two hits, as they got a Kenny Anderson relic #ed to 50 and a Tyshawn Taylor auto.  Clippers winner got a Trey Thompkins auto.  I had the Bucks as one of my teams and they pulled a Sidney Moncreif auto #ed to 99.

Best pull I ever had was an SP Authentic pack. Maybe 98-99. I pulled a Duncan rookie along with a mail in redemption for a signed Anferny Hardaway jersey. Took forever to get it in the mail, but the jersey was very nice. Ended up getting a couple hundred for it.

Based on the free gifts and the prices on stuff, I'm gonna guess your order is from D&As?

That's pretty bad when I can look at a breakdown and have a good idea on where stuff was ordered from.   I've never actually personally ordered from them cause it seems like they're always more expensive than blowout and cardsinfinity.  Hopefully you get something nice from those boxes though

Even though Score fucking sucks, I'm probably gonna wind up getting a box this week when they come out just cause I want some NFL product with rookies in it.  Then after that, due to the weak rookie class my plan is to be done with football this year until Chrome comes out.

Correct.  I'll need to check out those other sites at some point too.  Do you prefer either to the other?

I may skip the 2013 Class unless somebody really breaks out.  The "best" players are either WRs or defense, with maybe a gem coming out in the QB Class.  The class just feels like a 2005/2006 type group.  Maybe you get 2-3 superstars but you also get a lot of 'solid' guys who simply don't amount to much long term.

I wish I had stocked up on 2005 boxes back in the day.

Sure for the "superstars" but overall the class is pretty meh.  QB = Aaron Rodgers, maybe Alex Smith.  RB = Frank Gore.  WR = Roddy White and Vincent Jackson.  TE = Heath Miller.  D = DeMarcus Ware, maybe Trent Cole.

You have maybe 5-6 surefire hits in terms of getting rookie cards but you're more likely to whiff and get somebody like QB Jason Campbell or RB Cadillac Williams or WRs Mark Clayton & Matt Jones.

Nice Dalton auto

Didn't end up getting that box of Score today because Panini waited until freakin day of release to tell shop owners that it got pushed back a week.   Bought into a group break of Momentum basketball though, was disappointed because I got the Mavs, but then ended up getting a Michael Finley auto numbered to 5 and a Sam Perkins auto to 10.   Or maybe it's the other way around, I don't remember.   I'll find out when I pick up the cards either tomorrow or Friday

Pretty blah box break for the price.  Rookie Autos of WR Jairus Wright (#d to 299) and Travis Benjamin (#d to 499).

I'll probably stick to Upper Deck as that was the most fun/most "productive" of my box breaks thus far.

I've been slowly opening my boxes and finally pulled a couple of good hits in the Gypsy Queen box.

Goose Gossage Yellow Printing Plate 1/1

Elvis Andrus Mini Wood 3/5

No list price on Beckett for either. Judging by Ebay the Mini Wood's (heh) are going anywhere from $40 to $250, Andrus I'm guessing should be around some where between $50 and $75. The Printing Plate cards are going from $20 to $100, Gossage is probably a $40 to $50 card. Only other card of real note I've pulled so far is a Yu Darvish 2012 Topps shortprint which is listed at $30. All my autograph cards so far have been nobodies.

Guy I know just stopped by my office with three binders of baseball cards for appraisal.

He had three oversized cards worth in the 5-10 dollar range. The entire collection outside of those were late 80s/early 90s cards and anything even remotely interesting was damaged.

Poor guy was heart broken. I told him the same advice I've been giving, "Donate them to a children's charity of some sort and take a 1 cent per card tax deduction."

It is sad seeing people think that their cards from the 80's and 90's are worth anything. I had a friend with a ton of cards from that era, he bought a becket and started pricing them out. He thought he was doing good by the fact that so many cards were worth $.25-$.50. Thinking that quantity meant something in this case. I had to break it to him that it didn't matter and he wouldn't get a fraction of what the book said they were worth. No one wants you Jim Abbot and Jose Canseco Topps cards.

Question for the more experienced collectors, what has been your luck with redemption cards? I got my first one ever, a 2012 Bowman Platinum auto relic refractor of James Paxton (Mariners prospect), but I'm reading some horror stories over the ridiculous length of time it takes for Topps fulfill the redemptions.
Title: Re: Sports Cards Hobby Thread
Post by: Baby Shoes on June 07, 2013, 12:36:19 AM
I can't recall doing a Topps Redemption recently.  I do remember a few years back, as a Celtics can I bought a redemption on eBay for a dual signed rookie Glen Davis/Gabe Pruitt.  By the time they responded, they ran out of the card I specifically got the redemption for and sent me a Sheldon Williams jersey/auto.  Not sure if at that time in those player's careers they considered it an upgrade.

Mainly collecting basketball, I do a good amount through Panini.  Fairly smooth and easy to redeem there but it does take several months.

In my not really well thought out return to baseball card collecting I had resisted the premium products as I just look at them as very expensive lottery tickets. But to date I really haven't had very many major pulls, that Elvis Andrus card I posted had been the best to date which I sold for $60. Not that I in anyway had delusions of making money on baseball cards it still would be nice to get something worthwhile. So I finally gave in and bought a box of 2013 Topps Museum Collection which comes in at over $200 for just 20 cards and to my pleasant surprise this box paid off. Here were the two big pulls, both Rangers players again.

Nolan Ryan Red Parallel 1/1

Ryan cards are always in demand and I saw the Ripken red parallel went for $220 so I'm guessing this is worth close to that.

Yu Darvish Auto Relic Patch Card 5/10

Wow this is a great fucking card. These are going anywhere from $400 to $600 $425.

Damn I don't know shit about baseball and even I know that was a killer box.

Last box I bought was a 2013 score that had a 1/1 Jon Dwyer and a Montee Ball auto to 25...at least I think it was 25.

Edit:  Where are you seeing $600 for that Yu card?   Everything I'm seeing on ebay is in the $425-$400 range
Title: Re: Sports Cards Hobby Thread
Post by: Bored on June 21, 2013, 11:49:14 AM
The lowest selling price was $402 and the other two that sold were at best offer accepted so can't be sure for what they sold for. Looking at at it again more likely they sold for under $500.

Yeah still a nasty card no doubt, considering I've been back in the collecting game for probably a year now and haven't pulled anything that sold for more than like $170
Title: Re: Sports Cards Hobby Thread
Post by: Edwin on June 21, 2013, 01:49:35 PM
What does it mean when something's a 1/1?  Just that it's the only type of card in a series?  Does the 5/10 mean that there are 9 other pieces of Darvish jersey out there, or that there are 9 other players who got the "we chopped up yo jersey" treatment that year?
Title: Re: Sports Cards Hobby Thread
Post by: fazzle on June 21, 2013, 02:47:09 PM
Yes a 1/1 means it's the only one of that type of card in existence.  In this case it's a 1/1 base parallel, meaning that this is what the normal card looks like

(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/2013-Topps-Museum-Collection-51-NOLAN-RYAN-Rangers-Mint-Free-Shipping-/00/s/NDgwWDY0MA==/z/VTMAAOxyhodRsVZd/$T2eC16Z,!y0E9s2S8i1SBRsVZdCE6g~~60_12.JPG)

So Bored's is the only Nolan Ryan base card from museum collection in existence to have red borders instead of silver.

Meanwhile the Darvish /10 means there are 9 other Yu Darvish autographed cards with patch chunks inserted in them as well.   While they're technically all the same rarity, cards with better looking patches always sell for more than ones that are kinda plain looking.

I need to get into this business. Not collecting them, good god no. I mean making these shits. Rollie Fingers pubes in a lazered glass sphere or something. There are people in the world wiilling to pay three+ figures for something with negligible material costs.

I'll agree that parallels are totally ridiculous and it makes no sense why people pay extra money for a different color, but I'm more than happy to sell them to people on ebay.

Just ordered a 2012 Upper Deck SP Signature Edition Baseball Hobby Box on sale for $109.95 (DaCardWorld has it originally for $279 and BlowOutCards has it for $225 for comparison's sake).

I actually don't mind parallels when they are rare like this but of course every set these days has about four or five parallel sets.

The Felix/Lester/Shields is a good score.

I don't think Upper Deck could make those cards look any more bland though.

I think they look that way because Upper Deck basically has the rights to use NOTHING.  I could be wrong though.

Just ordered 1 2013 Topps Museum Collection Baseball Hobby Box from Blowout Cards for $198.95 (on sale from $224.99).  The 2012 version is for $270 by comparison.

I'm so tempted to pick up another box (or two) of Museum after those two killer pulls but deep down I know I should quit while I'm ahead.

Spoiled for the pic spam.

Just ordered 4 boxes of 2013 Topps Series 1 Baseball Hobby Box for $150.80 thanks to Blowout Cards offering a $5 off coupon too for their July 4th Sale.  Comes out to an average of $37.70 per box (already on sale from its $59.99 list price).

I also like that a lot of the 1/1 are Hobby & HTA only (same for the entirety of the Autograph Relic Cards).

I've gotten "bigger" hits through DaCardWorld but more consistent hits through Blowout Cards thus far.

The Musial coin is a nice pull, they're going from about $20 to $30 on ebay.

The Darvish card from the Museum Collection box ended up selling for $406 and the Ryan card for $171. Of course by getting such great cards out of the box I've foolishly dove head first into the premium products buying four boxes of Bowman Inception, a box Topps Tribute WBC, and two boxes of the standard Topps Tribute that I'll be getting in the mail later this week. I don't have scans at the moment but just pulled an Addison Russell (A's top prospect) autograph printing plate from an Inception box. Other one on ebay sold for $250. Also got a Bubba Starling (Royals top prospect) redemption red parallel which should top $100. I'm selling any redemption I get now after the nightmares I've be read about Topps taking literally years to respond and replacing them with cards well below the value of the original redemption. Can't believe people are paying premium for them.

I also pre-ordered a 12 box case of Topps Chrome to try to take advantage of the ridiculous prices Yasiel Puig cards are selling for. Hopefully he stops running into walls.

I'm still planning on preordering a case of 2013 Topps Chrome FB at some point, but I'm still holding out hope for the price to drop before I put in for them.   Cheapest I'm finding online right now is $900, if anyone knows somewhere to preorder for cheaper let me know  (other than eBay.  preordering on eBay is a giant fucking gamble because by the time the product actually comes out, you're way past your window for opening claims if the other person screws you)

So I finally went in and ordered a case of Chrome.  I used my fanduel winnings from the other night, so the case only ended up costing me like $275.   I'm pretty good with that price alright.   Haven't really busted anything lately.  Anyone else been buying cards?

I also have put a stop to the binge buying I did for a couple of months there. I still though have the Topps Chrome baseball case that I pre-ordered coming next month so we'll see once I get that if I fall off the wagon again.

I haven't collected cards since I was a little little kid (and don't have anything from that time, not that I had anything amazing to start with), and was looking at buying a hobby box of Topps Series 2 and seeing what I pull and if I can make any sort of profit. I doubt I would actually *collect* anything, but I guess it would all depend on what I got. I'm currently on the fence about it.
Title: Re: Sports Cards Hobby Thread

You're highly unlikely to make a profit unless you pull a rare insert card in the box as base cards pretty much sell for nothing, even rookies. But you can get a Topps Series 2 hobby box for around $40 so even if you pull nothing of note you're not exactly out a huge amount of money. But just a warning from someone who hadn't collected for over 15 years until this year, it can become very addicting.

Yeah, I was looking at not spending a great deal, like less than a hundred tops. Of course, I do worry a little about the addiction part, but I already collect one thing (Disney Vinylmations) and I'm not about to add anything else major. My 'back up reasoning' is 'oh, if I have a kid someday, maybe it'll be cool to have something that they can collect too'.  Still, I don't see me even buying a box until late next month unless my finances take a hefty uptick.

And that's what happened to me.  :'( Product was released three weeks ago but never received it. Seemed like a reputable seller but in the past month it looks like the guy just disappeared based on his reviews. I'm out $685.

I wonder what kind of legal grounds you have to take this to a non paypal option.   He took your money and didn't deliver the promised product.  That's still theft no matter what.

I'm really debating picking up a box of the new NBA Hoopa cards that come out next week.  The hobby box is ten packs of 50.  I want to get all the rookies at least for autographing at games this year but I feel like I am better off just trying to but sets than dropping $100 on that box.  Especially because I wasn't too enthused with most of my autograph pulls last year anyway.

Bumping up this thread for the first time in a while because I bought a box of Museum Collection football that just came out yesterday, and got it for only $80 due to the card shop owner losing a super bowl bet with me, and pulled a Joe Montana autograph numbered to 25 out of it.  So...I'd say I got my money's worth.

February grading special @ BGS is $7/card for football cards, 45 day service level. You still have to pay the $2 auto fee though. I had a bunch of cards ready to go for a group sub last month and had to back out b/c of my wife getting emergency hospitalized, but I might be able to jump on this before the end of the month. I have a bunch of low #'d cards that aren't autographed that would do good in some holders.

Disappointed in my last few breaks, I've really calmed down.  I bought some onsie twosies recently for potential autographs but nothing too exciting.

Pinnacle basketball set seems pretty solid, bought a few team sets and lesser recognized rookies off a seller on eBay.

Saw the 2014 Topps baseball at the Dbacks event last weekend.  Seem nice enough but I will probably wait until sellers start trying to unload complete sets in Spring Training for $20 or less, if I even bother.

I always like those letter patch autographs like your Moore.  I've never seen a patch like the Colston one, purely the Reebok patch.  Wasn't sure they would do the "sponsor" like that but it is actually pretty cool.  Makes me wonder if it brings extra "value" to the card.

Seeing this thread got bumped anyway... http://culturecrossfire.com/sports/basketball/delightfully-random-basketball-cards/#.U2ZuCPmwKM4

I remember a buddy of mine pulling a Ray Bourque game used jersey out of the first year that Upper Deck did the jersey cards. Odds were 1:2,500. In just a couple of years they stopped making that a special card cause they were everywhere

Being called in to appraise a collection, heading there in about 2 hours. I'm always apprehensive about this because people read the internet and think they're sitting on a goldmine just like them people on the yahoo/msn/cnn article and when I get there it's always 1989 Donruss type stuff.

This time I'm cautiously optimistic. The person making the request is late 40s and her dad died when I was a kid (friend of my father). If it's her dad's collection there could be some cool stuff from the 50s or 60s. I'll try and take pictures with my phone.

Just ordered a Box of 2014 Upper Deck Football Hobby for $104.95 with 2x 2012 Panini Absolute Football Retail Pack.  Went with DaCardWorld as I've gotten higher end hits from them more so than Blowout Cards.

Im still waiting for this job to end so I can get back home and open the box of 2014 Press Pass Showbound I won for free from Blowout for correctly predicting Lonnie Ballentine as this years mr irrelevant. I know the longer they sit they the more value they lose since Press Pass is a pretty garbage product and the closer we get to NFL licensed cards coming out, the faster they fall.

Total waste of time. I found a 1994 Collectors Edition Special Edition A-Rod and a Derek Jeter from the same set. Other than that it was all the usual stuff people bring to me to look at.

Maybe not 40, but a whole bunch of 2013 football has fallen to the $50-$60 range since nobody has any faith in that rookie class.

Score hobby boxes usually check in around the $40 price point but then you're stuck with 36 packs of about 8 cards each...

I'll check them out tomorrow, maybe. I got a shop less than two blocks away and the guy is pretty reasonable with prices (tends to be 10 to 15 percent less than retail, at least).

Most of the time I hate manufactured patches, but the sole exception is lettermen.   I always like the look of those.  I picked up a blaster of 2014 UD a month or so ago and got a Jeremy Gallon lettermen auto out of that, 75/75.

Edit:  Did you get any short print base variations?  (cards over 150 are SPs in 2014 UD)

so Topps Chrome WWE came out today, and holy shit did the hype instantly die down once the checklist was released.

Aksana
Alicia Fox
Diamond Dallas Page
Dolph Ziggler
Fandango
Honky Tonk Man
Kane
Natalya
Roman Reigns
Sin Cara

That's EVERYBODY who has an auto card in this series.   The duals have a better checklist, but they're all just numbered to 5, so..good luck.

So I was an opportunistic little bastard last night and put up a Kawhi Leonard Contenders rookie auto on ebay right after he got named finals MVP.   Just a few months ago that was a $30ish dollar card, but after winning finals MVP I managed to get $100 for it so..I'm pretty psyched.

Things have been spiraling out of control in the personal life with medical bills and such forcing me to throw a lot of my better cards on Ebay. I threw some BGS 10s up there, Elway, Marino, Montana, Bradshaw, Rice, and OJ Simpson rookie cards up there. Also have some stuff unrelated to sports cards also.

Anyway if anyone's bored, http://www.ebay.com/sch/corieandgreggotodisney2011/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from= (http://www.ebay.com/sch/corieandgreggotodisney2011/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=) give it a look.

First thing on the other side of that link "7 mew pokemon cards"

Sorry, just made me laugh.   Opened up two boxes of Bowman FB last week and while the majority of the autos I got were pretty crap, I did get an Ebron Prism auto numbered to 5 out of it, so that was pretty cool.

The old lady that lived next door to my parents fled town with her sister and told my parents to clean the house out. They found Pokemon and Magic cards in there (her sister grabbed the baseball cards). That's the only ones I have left that I haven't given to friends  in the area.

The stuff requiring signing in is mostly old playboys from college on when PB gave me a $1/issue subscription.

While printing plates typically don't grade well, I'd advise you to get it slabbed by BGS.
Title: Re: Sports Cards Hobby Thread
Post by: fazzle on November 12, 2014, 04:33:42 AM
I'm not really much of a BGS guy in general, but I really don't see the point of getting 1/1s graded.   I mean, yeah, a printing plate isn't exactly a superfractor or anything, but does a 1/1 getting a high grade really improve the value more than a 1/1 raw?  Isn't the main point of getting a card graded to separate it from the lesser versions of that same card?
Title: Re: Sports Cards Hobby Thread
Post by: Saints_Fan_H on November 12, 2014, 11:17:27 PM
My counter to that is that there are so many 1/1s on the market these days, that yes, a higher graded 1/1 of RG3 is more desirable than a lower graded one. Consider that most products have 4 plates for each card (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) that's 4 1/1 plates for one player, just different colors.

On my shelf I have 3 1/1s from 2008 National Treasures Drew Brees. All are autoed, all are plates, all are graded, just they are different colors. As it stands they are all 3 BGS 8 but if one was a 8.5 or higher, I'd anticipate a premium on that one.

Plus them holders are so phenomenal in protecting and preserving the cards.*

*not a BGS employee, I swear.

Blowout's twitter feed tweeted it. It is a sweet ass card.

I admit I do get a little rain man when it comes to card grading. I live in a flood zone. In 09 a whole box of graded cards got water logged. The box was a total loss, the cards perfect. Just had to wipe some of the sludge off of the cases. Had it gone 3 inches higher it would have hit my ungraded card box and ruined them.

Oh cool I must have missed blowout's tweet, since I follow them too.  I don't do much grading cause, honestly, I rarely get cards worth grading.  I'm thinking about finally doing it though for some of my football cards (that one, a Wilson triple jersey rookie auto /49, Wilson rookie auto /49, a Kaep jersey rookie auto /35)

If you sign up for the BGS forums there's a guy named Jeff who facilitates 20 day group sub grading for like $6.25 a card no minimum submission and only $1 extra for auto grades(I think it's over $10/card normally). Last month he submitted 2000 cards for people. You just have to get on his good side and he'll invite you. Also in the football sub forum there's a female user who once every three months does a 45 day open sub for around $7/card no minimum submission and no extra auto cost.

Also, Blowout hosts group subs as well.

There's one user on BGS forum who hosts group subs, a NY Giants fan, but I was advised on research to not go through him because he is a middle man for a third party and THAT third party submits to BGS.

Has anyone been following the saga of Jason Mars and his "Honus Wagner" card?

He purchased it on Ebay for less than $200: http://www.wthr.com/story/26545391/2014/09/16/nevada-man-snags-rare-honus-wagner-baseball-card and was scared it would be fake but upon receiving in the mail, he just knows it is real.

Even though the listing says reprint: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Collectible-1909-T-206-Honus-Wagner-Baseball-Card-Sweet-Caporal-Antique-/171439808784?pt=US_Baseball&nma=true&hash=item27ea9be110&si=jcgCvAy3tNo6Tx6HcSndWru1W1c%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 he and the seller states it has to have the word "reprint" since he cannot provide a COA.

Hobbyists from a few forums including blowout forums (http://www.blowoutcards.com/forums/baseball/775002-honus-wagner-t206-sold-ebay-170-a.html) pointed out to Mr. Mars on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/jason.mars?fref=ts) that the seller sells LOTs and LOTS of reprint cards. Mr. Mars then flew off the handle and has spent the better part of 2 months talking himself in circles on Facebook that it is real despite multiple amounts of evidence pointing to reprint.

He has since supposed to have been sending it to both PSA and SGC for authentication and neither have done so. He's since discredited them as not knowing what they're talking about (which considering the Gretzky Wagner PSA 8 card...) and is instead relying on vague unnamed experts. At random points Mr. Mars refers to himself as an expert card grader with 30 years of experience.

Many hobbyists have started following him on Facebook, some approaching civilly, others not so much, trying to reason with him that he is NOT sitting on a valuable card, but he won't have any of it. He is planning on selling it and securing the estimated $500k - $1 million that it should bring, but it looks like hobbyists are not going to allow him to pull a fast one on some unsuspecting person of wealth.

It is interesting being a spectator in this. Part of me thinks this man is possibly mentally ill (married with children) and another part of me thinks he is a straight up con man based on hobbyists digging up a criminal history.

Joined a card trading group on Facebook to get rid of some of this excess I have. I open with "Here are scans of these low dollar items. I don't have many high end items anymore as I sold off everything from teams that aren't the Saints. I'm looking for Saints cards of equal value."
I'm flooded with messages, "DO YOU HAVE TOM BRADY ROOKIE AUTO CARDS? WHAT ABOUT PEYTON MANNING ROOKIE AUTOS? AARON RODGERS ROOKIE AUTOS? WHAT ABOUT RICHARD SHERMAN OR JJ WATT ROOKIE AUTOS?" WTF people?

Well it's Facebook.  No matter what the community, facebook is going to be a huge massive grouping of idiots.

Meanwhile, I just place two of my Wilson rookie autos on eBay, timed to end just after the Super Bowl ends.  I sure hope that I'm right and they win, otherwise it could be a mistake.

Edit:  Yikes, they were actually only up for 24 hours.  Good thing I noticed that and was able to edit them before anyone had a chance to bid on them.

Personally I'd have them go up the day after the Superbowl ended. I'm sure eBay traffic gets historically low while the Superbowl is on. And probably not too busy just after it ends.

Assuming the Seahawks win, immediately after the super bowl ends is the best time, because that's when everyone is looking to get something.  The longer you wait the more the high dies down and the demand lowers.  Same thing as when the Spurs won the title last year and Kawhi won MVP.   I had a Kawhi auto that before the playoffs was going for like $30.  I sold mine for $100 immediately after the finals ended, and now it's back down to like $40 again.

Anyone that pay pals me $10 and their address will get a binder of their favorite football team or baseball team. Most teams guaranteed 300+ cards (check with me on specifics). All base commons.

Already taken: Patriots, Cowboys, Dolphins, Falcons. Awaiting for confirmation from 49ers and Chiefs.

OR we can just swap your team for my team as long as it's reasonably equal.

Above is the crux of what I've been posting in trade groups. Responses:  HEY MAN YOU GOT ANY ANDREW LUCK ROOKIE AUTOS?! WHAT ABOUT JJ WATT OR RICHARD SHERMAN!?

They ended up going for $162.50 and $113.50 and didnt receive any additional bids after the game started...and then the guy who was the high bidder on both of them said he wouldnt be paying for them since the Seahawks lost. I fuckin hate how theres NO consequence on ebay for fuckers like that.  Oh well, I get to keep the cards. I'm not too worried about them losing much value.

I tried a couple boxes of 2011 Panini Limited Cuts a few weeks ago.  It's a one card per box thing; the one card being a cut autograph.  They had been $200-225 per but now back down to earth at the 50-60 range.  First one had Riggs Stephenson, a Cub from the 1920s-30s.  Not bad.  The second try was Pee Wee Reese.  And that was awesome.

This motherfucker on COMC.com will not negotiate for shit. And he's a power seller so it's not like he isn't able to turn offers off. I've made 50%, 33%, 25%, 15% up to just offering $.01 off total to be an ass. He still declines.

Hey man I'm not really into cards at all but I'd totally paypal you $10 for a binder of White Sox cards if you've got one.

The problem with the white sox binder is that Frank Thomas cards were pulled out a long time ago into a separate binder since he's my favorite all time baseball player.

Picked up the following from DaCardWorld... Also saved an additional $5 with this site: DaCardWorld Discount Codes (http://www.retailmenot.com/view/dacardworld.com?c=6600890)

2014 Upper Deck Quantum Football Hobby Box: $109.95 (on clearance from $343)
2009 Upper Deck SP Authentic Football Hobby Box: $82.95 .... Mainly going for the big names of Stafford & McCoy.
Free Gift: 5x 2012 Panini Absolute Football Retail Pack

I've decided to start jumping on clearance deals more too. They aren't necessarily bad product (usually) and if the warehouse is dumping them, may as well save the $$ and possibly get some hits.

So just did my box break... The 2009 Upper Deck SP Authentic was a bust as I kind of expected tbh. Got signatures /299 of LB Brian Cushing and LB Clay Matthews.

2013-2014 Upper Deck Quantum Football more than made up for it though, especially since it cost me only $108!

31/35 Autograph WR Tavon Austin
18/65 RB Johnathan Franklin
65/65 QB Zac Dysert
61/75 Authentic Jersey WR Kenny Stills
24/85 Autograph Jerseys WR Aaron Dobson
117/175 Rookies WR Odell Beckham Jr.

Congrats on all your pulls.  I'm always partial to NBA, really dug the McCollum card.

I have been more aloof on cards this year than I have in a while but I placed an order today for the 2014-15 Hoops Hobby box.  It isn't a high dollar product but I usually do the set every year.  I know the box won't make a complete set but it has been a while since I did a box break but I always have a hard time buying the product that is like $90 for 20 cards.

NICE on the NFL break.  I'm jealous of that EJ 1/1.  I still have some faith in him, even if it isn't much.

I ordered 2 boxes of 14/15 Select and got them in today as well.  Hit a gold patch of Cory Jefferson /10, a gold base of Roy Hibbert /10, a Tye-Dye Patch of Kawhi Leonard /25 and a Black 1/1 base of Darren Collison.   The autos weren't anything special.

Was added to a Facebook group. You send your cards to a guy in Dallas and he walks them to BGS personally so you don't need to worry about FEDEX return shipping with BGS (it escalates quick) or the insurance prices they charge. And then you pay him after the fact.

$8 no auto/20 day
$9 auto/20 day

And he runs same day submissions also. And there's some deal he has where you can name your grade and if it doesn't meet that standard you only pay $2 instead of the grading cost (haven't investigated that deal further b/c its not something I'd want).

ANYWAY as always, offer stands if you guys want in, let me know.

Title: Re: Sports Cards Hobby Thread
Post by: Saints_Fan_H on May 26, 2015, 07:34:42 PM
I quit my monthly OPG subscription at Beckett about a year ago. I hardly buy baseball anymore as it is, and when I do buy baseball it's Frank Thomas singles or random 80s/90s stars I've been meaning to pick up. My football collecting is pretty much singularly Saints.

I used to defend price guides while a large segment of the hobby is pulling away from them (unless it works in their favor to make a sale). Sorting through cards the other day, though, pretty much solidified me thinking they are useless. There's a Frank Thomas single that I have 3 copies of. In 98 I was at Walmart and was looking at the rack of baseball cards and saw one of those "remix" packs where you can see the top card and the bottom card. It was $3.99 and there was a 1993 Frank Thomas Fleer Team Leaders card sitting on top. I got excited and bought the pack. When I got home and looked in my weekly Beckett it was worth $20, which for me at that time was high rolling. A week later I was at the same Walmart, in the same section, and they had another of the same card in one of those repacks. So I bought it for the girl I was dating (she also collected). When we broke up some how or another that card got mixed up with mine when I went get my shit from her place (she organized my whole collection to that point for me).

At some point I randomly picked up a third one, not for $20.

Last week when I was putting together a grading order I glanced through my 400 deep Frank Thomas collection and paused on those three cards. I checked COMC and just shook my head. There's a LOT of copies of that card and a good # of them can be had for less than $1. I don't know what the current OPG would even say what this card is. If I had to gander a guess, $2.50-$5.00 based on the upper end of the COMC listings. When I checked the graded population report there was only one graded copy, so even in the early days of BGS no one really considered this a card worth slabbing.

This card is just one example, but damn it's my example.

1.   1985 Garbage Pail Kids Blasted Billy 8b Checklist (altered/trimmed unable to be graded. I'm livid that someone took scissors to a work of art. Had this graded high enough I could have easily got $500+ for it)
2.   1987 Garbage Pail Kids Bobbi Booger Purple Variant 6.5
3.   2012 Crown Royale Rookie Pay dirt Nick Toon 9
4.   2003 Ultimate Collection Frank Thomas 64/75 8.5
5.   2012 Topps Five Star Jimmy Graham 080/139 8.5
6.   1998 Upper Deck Retrospectives Frank Thomas 8.5
7.   2011 National Treasures Century Jimmy Graham 10/25 8.5
8.   1984 Fleer Schedules Saints 8
9.   2007 Donruss Gridiron Gear Robert Meachem 13/50 9
10.   2012 Crown Royal Sunday Soldiers Materials Marques Colston 8.5
11.   2009 Exquisite Collection Marques Colston 77/80 8
12.   1999 UD Authentics Encore Mark Brunnell AU  9
13.   2002 Bowman Chrome Jeremy Shockey AU 9

Overall I'm disappointed in my cards all being 9 or lower. I honestly was in an almost tear filled rage over the altered card because I had both versions of that card last year in relatively high grades but had to sell it in the wake of raising money to pay our attorney to file bankruptcy. None of our stuff was actually able to sell for as high as we wanted and I had to let a LOT of sentimental childhood stuff go for way low. That was one. I was able to secure a new copy off of COMC.com in March and finally got it to BGS. I've calmed down though, it's just cardboard. And I'm only out around $30 total (getting the card for so low should have clued me in) and have contacted their CS to see if there's any recourse on the seller for listing altered items.

As far as everything grading 9 or lower, that's good in the sense that there's a LOT of conspiracy theorists in the hobby that think bulk submitters get unfairly high grades and this proves that there's no favoritism being exercised so you are getting treated fairly. As soon as the cards arrive I'll post scans.

EDIT: Registry won't let me add the Fleer schedule even though they graded it.

To cut me out as a middle man, if you post your email address (or PM it) I can add you to the group via email.

duuuuuuuddeeees I'm so fucking pissed offf right now.

I finally decided to follow up with Topps reference to a 2012 5 Star Jimmy Graham redemption auto. It seems ole Jimmy decided to leave New Orleans without signing his cards. I figured since he's no longer a Saints player, I'd ask Topps to replace it with something I collect, specifically current saints players so they don't try to hit me with an Aaron Brooks auto or some stupid shit like that. I was also trying to see about a redemption a friend had that wound up being already redeemed (idiot).

Me:

Quote
Hello,

I have two issues to report:

1. I’m trying to punch in a redemption code for a 2013 UFC Knockouts auto card. Everytime I put the code into the appropriate blank, I get a runtime error. I need to be able to retrieve this. I’ve attempted 3 times with capital letters and twice with lower case letters.
2. I have a redemption for a 2012 Five Star Jimmy Graham auto card that is STILL pending. He no longer plays for my team.

Please advise what can be done for both issues.

Response:

Quote
Thank you for contacting the Topps Consumer Relations regarding your redemption.

I apologize for the delayed response.

Please can you send an image of the redemption card that you are trying to enter, also your Jimmy Graham redemption card is still in process of getting signed.

If you would like to replace the Jimmy Graham redemption card please state that in your next email.

We hope this information is helpful to you. As always, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Service team (By phone: 1-800-489-9149, or by Email: support@topps.com) if you have any other questions, comments, or suggestions. A customer service representative will be available to answer your questions between the hours of 9:00am - 4:00pm (EST), Monday through Friday.

Sincerely,
Tareek
Customer Service Representative

Me:

Quote
As far as replacing the Jimmy Graham goes, that would be fine as long as it is a current roster member for the saints. I paid a pretty good amount for the redemption but since he’s no longer on the squad, I’d prefer to have a current roster member auto (Drew Brees, Marques Colston, Garrett Grayson, Brandin Cooks, CJ Spiller, etc…). If Topps for whatever reason cannot fulfill the redemption with a Saints autograph I collect the following non Saints or non football related items that Topps handles:

Frank Thomas (1990-2009 career)
Garbage Pail Kids
Cal Ripken Jr.
Mariners Ken Griffey Jr.
Ravens Lardarius Webb
WWE Daniel Bryan
WWE CM Punk

My wife also collects Aaron Rodgers auto cards. At worst I can turn this into a gift for her.

And I have included scans of the UFC redemption. I did not pay for this, it was a gift and was given to me scratched. The giver of the gift says he does not remember if he scratched it or not (it came with a card he bought on the after market and he didn’t want it). There is a VERY STRONG possibility my friend is an egg head and gave me a gift that’s already been redeemed.

<IMG_0962.JPG>

Again, my biggest issue is the Jimmy Graham autograph redemption.

Response:

Quote
Hi,

Unfortunately I have looked in our database and someone else has already redeemed the redemption card that you have.

Also you can not request any replacement card for your pending Jimmy Graham because it is a low value you card.

All low valued cards are randomly replaced with a card with the same current market value as the card that is being replaced.

Sincerely,
Tareek
Customer Service Representative

I start to get annoyed:
Quote
I paid $75 on this card in 2012. That is not “low value” to me. I find it pretty questionable that Topps could consider the best Tight End in the NFC (and #2 in the whole NFL) as low value. Especially considering what Seattle gave up to get him. I just finished donating nearly 21,000 non Saints, Non Frank Thomas, Non Aaron Rodgers, and Non GPK cards to a children’s home to weed out stuff I don’t collect (and it seemed like a nice thing to do).

I would ask you to reconsider your policy of “low value.”

Thanks,

SFH

They sense my annoyance:

Quote
I apologize for the inconvenience but I can reconsider our policy for you.

Your 2012 Five Star Five Star Signatures Base Auto of Jimmy Graham #FSS-JG is valued at $25 Beckett.

There is nothing we can do, it's either you wait for your redemption or get it replaced with a random card equal to its current market value.

Sincerely,
Tareek
Customer Service Representative

So  I turned into spurned love interest and take pictures of every complete Topps set I have in my sports room and key singles with this message:
Quote
I apologize for not mentioning this sooner, but it was not a $25 book value when I bought it. I also apologize for the hurt I’m directing at Topps, but see things from my point of view. I’m a life long Topps fan and customer. And now I’m getting emails from TOPPS coming off like I’m being scolded for the company’s inability to fulfill redemptions. Maybe I should have started bombarding Topps with emails 30 days after no movement like some collectors seem to do, but no I gave you the benefit of
the doubt and was patient. And when I refer to myself as a life long Topps fan and customer, I’m not being superfluous. I’ll show you.
SFH

And they seem to have lost interest in engaging me:
Quote
Hi,

Are you going to wait for your card or would you like to replace it?

Sincerely,
Tareek
Customer Service Representative

Like I want to be a dick and push it further but what's the point? It's clear I lost. And my friend that has a law degree has better things to worry about than to send threatening mail over a trading card. Even if he would do it "for the lulz."

That sucks. The guy said he could give you a card of equal value but can't let you pick specific players/teams, which is fair enough (otherwise people would be asking for the elite stars all the time obviously).

Yeah, you paid $75 in 2012 but that was 3 years ago and you know as well as anybody that card values fluctuate. Not sure how yelling at the guy helps this situation at all.

I agree it royally blows but on the other hand, I'd have grown tired of dealing with you too since I'm sure that guy's hands were tied.

That does suck but I've been hit by that.  Being a basketball collector, there was a point I was buying cards of the young guys on my team.  During their rookie year, I paid a little extra to get a dual Big Baby Davis/Gabe Pruitt dual signed rookie, as I really wanted Big Baby.

Without any notice until I received the card, they couldn't fulfill it and sent some random ass Shelden Williams autograph.  Since then I haven't really messed with the redemption ones unless I pull them myself.

The problem is redemptions as a whole.   It's complete bullshit that cards can go YEARS without being signed.  Who's to blame for that though, the player or the card companies?   More often than not, I'd be willing to bet it's the card companies putting the redemptions in without even talking to the players to make a deal, and assuming they'll be able to get them later.

That's true.  I've heard stories on people giving the sticker sheets away for people to do for them because the card company doesn't monitor and doesn't give deadlines.

I don't disagree with you that I'm being tiresome. The purchase was made when Jimmy Graham was still on the Saints. Two full seasons have passed AND he's been traded since I put in the serial #. I *just* last month got rid of all of my extraneous cards that have no use to my collection. And now their solution is to saddle me with a card not in my list of things I collect. I could probably trade it, and I will, to get something relevant to what I collect. But I'm highly agitated that I have to go through all of that.

His hands are tied, you are correct, how unreasonable would it be for me to call Topps directly and go through the chain of command? It'd probably be a waste of time and I'd still have the same outcome. I probably wouldn't yell because I'm all talk and I'm easily duped by people talking professional to me.

As far as picking star players I gave him plenty out with "Current Saints roster members." They could stick me with Punter Thomas Morstead and I'd be happy.

Anyway, I appreciate you giving me a counter point to my rambling.

I don't know if the card company would be one that bends over for customer satisfaction like other businesses.  They may try to pull random or tiered stuff still with no budging.

I remember when I was a kid, my parents bought me a pack of Fleer cards.  I got one of the top rookies at the time (okay, it was Shawn Bradley, but that was a big deal at the time, stop laughing).  That card, for some reason, was damaged in the pack.  My parents helped me write a letter to Fleer and they said "Sorry to hear, send us the damaged card and we will send you some random card from the same set".  Now, at the time, the Bradley card was the second or third most valuable card in the set, only behind his rookie peers Chris Webber for sure and maybe Penny Hardaway.  I wasn't going to send one of the cards that was over the price of a pack alone back when I would probably get a random ass common card instead, even if mine was damaged.

I feel like card companies haven't moved forward with their thinking.  I think it'd be great if they gave in and would love to hear you try but my guess is they will just wash their hands easy, claiming this isn't their fault which, in some ways it isn't, but I am sure Jimmy got paid for those cards he never signed, which is their fault.

I keep them for now as I'd rather hold onto them in case (as an example) Russell Wilson wins 4 SOUPS or Cam becomes Rodgers or something down the road rather than looking back and going, "what if?"

That and I've been card collecting since the early 90s so I like just looking at them from time to time.

I used to collect everything back when I was younger, but with how expensive cards are now, I sell probably 80% of what I break to recoup some of the costs.  I mainly keep Bills cards and just other stuff I think is cool and/or may go up in value.

Said I wouldn't go back to the flea market by my house again but I was out today and nothing better to do so I dropped in while passing. The actual proprietor of the card booth was there, not his grandson. I asked him first off if he dealt in 1980s Garbage Pail Kids and I had to explain to him what that was. He then lights up, "Oh yea I have a box of those at home for $500 Those are high dollar cards. I'll bring them next week for you." I asked if he had series 1 (that's the only box that makes sense at $500 and that'd be low balling it) and he said "yep!"

Then while I was there I started looking around the display cases at what was new (nothing really)...

"You know, if people would actually pay me the prices I ask I'd be a millionaire..." he wasn't being funny. He was dead serious. He shows me a "1 of 2" Wheaties box with a baseball player I can't place. Price? $1 million. I told him that if he sells it he's buying drinks, "ha ha ha" uncomfortably...and he says, "yea that's my grandson. I have a friend at Wheaties that made 2 of these for us." (It's apparently a different grandson and not the one that helps run the booth)

He tells me he has over 3 million cards at home to sell. I mentioned my recent donation of cards to the local special home and he did the whole "wha wha how ..wha why? What did you say for value?" I told him $3k for 21,000 cards, 52 binders, and 2400 ultra pro pages. "What? That's it!?" I said ''well I don't want to get audited..." He seemed genuinely offended that someone would just donate cards to charity and not try selling them. I explained it would have been too much work to list on eBay and shipping alone would be a bitch.

He tells me a lady came in with 50,000 cards (his words) and that he offered her $100 for them.

He shows me a few boxes of cards of players I mentioned that I collect, nothing I didn't already have. Lots of late 80s early 90s cards for $8-$15 each. He complains that he had to let someone talk him down from $200 on an 89 Griffey rookie. Said he doesn't like the idea of "John Beckett grading my cards" but I told him, "Sir we live in a flood prone area and those cases are water proof. I already have first hand experience on how much good they do."  Then some younger kid comes up, they apparently were in a price dispute prior to my arrival, and starts showing him prices of the Pokemon cards online that were a lot less than what the man was asking. The man begins to start a lecture on how you cannot trust the internet. They purposely put low prices on cards so that you'll sell the cards to them so they can rip you off.

I ducked out. I wish him well, but I'm done with that spot.

This guy on comc.com listed a bunch of cards that sell from $3-$4 for $0.73 cents each. So I bought them up and listed them on my own page for $5.00 (and accept 50% offers turned on) each. Like 40 of them.

Now we wait.

On Facebook, one of the better players to come out of my alma mater posted a picture of some of the NFL and CFL cards he's appeared on in his career. I commented on it citing having some but not all of those. I also mentioned I have some that he doesn't. So he's expressed a willingness to send me some of his extras, "Since I know you're a collector." I immediately responded and saying I'll absolutely send him some that I have that he's missing.

Like I thought it was stretch we'd ever really interact when he approved my friend request a while back, but he apparently pays attention to my posts (I have albums for the various players I collect, including one specifically from Nicholls State alumni who randomly will get tagged). I'm probably more excited about this than a grown man should responsibly be, but fuck it, I got acknowledged  8) .

*deal alert*

COMC.com sellers are having spring cleaning sales this week. The site software is pissing us off because it isn't 100% showing sale prices until you click on the actual card for some of us. COMC allows you to buy singles over time and then bulk ship them for one flat cost, if you have an account. Also on non-sale weeks you can offer percentages off the asking price if you have store credit (actual percentages vary per seller preferences).

I actually listed a bunch of stuff on clearance below listing cost just to move some of the shit. But then I'm also buying other peoples' cards at the same time.

That's awesome, Harley! The time I bought a box of National Treasures was from them and they really hooked me up with free stuff as well.

I don't know if you fool with grading, but BGS in the spring changed their price scheme (emphasis on scheme it would seem) and did away with 20 and 45 day guarantees. Now anything past the 10 day guarantee price point is "Non-guaranteed" and is listed as "20-60 days."

My group sub guy sent in some cards in May. We are on business day 86 right now. On Friday we were told, "Shipping Monday." Last I checked, my cards are not in the pop report. I think after he gets this submission back I'm taking a grading break until they get their house in order.

Apparently there's a labor shortage, unexpected influx of submissions, and not a lot of people wanting to grade. Knowing what I do know about the economics of this branch of the hobby, they are making a KILLING on this part of the hobby. You can't tell me there's not people in the Dallas area that are teachable to this job, okay with the tedium, and willing to make $65k. I really think that is an okay price point to pay a grader with the expertise required, and the money they are raking in (via my estimations).

If PSA wasn't so inferior in my opinion, I'd give them a look. Also, not to understate, but I'm pretty OCD about my cards and I don't exactly want to change horses mid race.

Is there a good resource online to look up cards? I've got a ton of stuff from when I was younger ('87-'88 or so) and I'm interested to see what they're worth.

The easiest/simplist way is Ebay and scoping out what your cards have sold for as a rough estimation. Price guides are virtually useless now IMO as the market is ever changing and, especially with the immediacy of the internet, a book value may be drastically different just months down the road (e.g. if a player enters the HOF or suddenly dies or what not).

Hassan Whiteside 16/49
Star Factor Insert - Russell Westbrook
Phenoms Jersey Patch & Autograph - Dwight Powell - 64/99

Getting the Whiteside/Boogie cards are awesome. The Collison's solid for a free pack and I'm a sucker for the Trio Jerseys (namely for Jokic), the Ewing card, and the Stevie Franchise jersey card.

It's funny.  I almost pulled a trigger on a box yesterday because it's been a while and I had a $24.79 eBay bucks certificate expiring yesterday but I realized the last box I bought it is still kinda just sitting in the box, all unwrapped, on a shelf so I held firm.  Curous to thee the break when you get there.

My interest in cards has really gone down the last few years.    Panini's monopoly of the two sports I care about breaking just kills it.

What kills me is how much there is just from a single producer, reminds me of the 90s overabundance of the market place.

2017 Topps MLB: Allen & Ginter, Archives (+ Signature Series, SS Postseason, & Snapshots), Bunt, Chrome (+ Jumbo & Mega Box), Clearly Authentic, Definitive, Diamond Icons, Dynasty, Finest, Fire, Five Star, Gallery, Gold Label, Gypsy Queen, Heritage (+ High Number & Minor League), High Tek, Inception, Luminaries, Museum Collection, Opening Day, Pro Debut, Series 1 (+ Jumbo & Relic), Series 2 (+ Jumbo), Stadium Club, Sticker, Top Tier One, Tribute, Triple Threads, Update Series (+ Jumbo)

Come the fuck on, Topps. I couldn't even tell you the difference between most of them with the exception of maybe 4 beyond how many packs per box/cards within each pack.

I think the card companies took the cue of the video game deals and got exclusivity.  I think they think if they make all these variations it makes up for all the different companies, which isn't true.  When I was going ultra heavy on collecting a couple years back, you'd get the same picture on a lot of cards across the line - not something that would happen when you had all the different companies/brands to choose from.  Granted, some values have held in the present market due to not over-saturating everything but the aesthetic has gone down, IMO.

First time doing a real Bowman box break.

The 2011 Break was pretty shitty outside of a 087/599 Green Shelby Miller. Also had a Gold base parallel of Dustin Pedroia & Adrian Gonzalez, Green base parallel of Troy Tulowitzki, and Red base parallel of Hunter Pence.

2012 was slightly better with Autograph of Daniel Norris, Clay Holmes Gold 335/399 (Put up good #s at AAA in 2017, could hit MLB in 2018), 116/399 Martinez Perez Green, 162/199 Blue Jedd Gyorko, and Gold base parallels of C.J. Wilson, Desmond Jennings, Justin Morneau, and a Red base parallel of Alex Gordon.

So for spending like $118 or so, here are the "main hits". Overall, not bad at all with a few particularly great hits (Ricky Williams, Rodgers/Nelson, Bob Griese) and a few others that are very solid (Alex Collins, Michael Strahan, the 2 Demaryius Thomas, and the Welker/Sanders/Thomas/Latimer quad patch).

Ricky Williams - Autograph 09/15
Thunder & Lightning 2nd Down: Aaron Rodgers/Jordy Nelson 29/49
Brian Hill - Rookie Card 49/50
Bob Griese - 54/99
Playoff Autograph Serial #d: Alex Collins 101/199
Michael Strahan - 070/299
Ryan Switzer - Rookie Card 132/299
Demaryius Thomas - 297/299 & Jersey Patch 289/299
Quad Jersey Patch: Wes Welker, Emmanuel Sanders, Julius Thomas, and Cody Latimer
Rookie Ink: William Jackson III
Rookie Force Jersey Patch: Connor Cook & Jersey Patch: Connor Cook

Final Thoughts: I prefer Clearance/Bargain binning where possible as the above shows. May not get the "elite" super new hits but you can get great steals too. I also prefer the cards/packs that include potential Autographs/Jersey Patches of veteran players in the NFL and not just the rookies (e.g. the Panini Prestige box which is basically rookies and little else).

I was thinking about it. If the Rice were better centered I would have sent it in no doubt. I’m not sure how much centering factors in to grading.

Broke a couple boxes of Sage HIGH Hit Series 2018 Football. Very pleasantly pleased with the results!

TE Jake Roh PP Auto is 7/10 (ironically he just got cut by the Atlanta Falcons, lol)
QB Mason Rudolph PP is 20/25
QB Logan Woodside PP is 23/25
TE Durham Smythe PP Auto is 5/25
RB Jaylen Samuels Premium Portrait Auto is 4/10
OLB Harold Landry is 17/250
WR Keke Coutee is 121/250
RB Malik Williams is 240/250

That's all on top of autos from Roquan Smith(!), Sony Michel(!), Mike Gesicki(!), and Tremaine Edmunds(!). Even not numbered, that's a pretty solid group.

As much fun as I have breaking boxes, I've talked myself out of boxes in recent times.  I go through these peaks where rather than the fun of the box, it sometimes makes more sense to me just invest in the cards I want - which tend to be autographs or like rookies of top prospects or plays on teams meaningful to me, regardless of their star power.

A buddy of mine told me about all the great eBay deals he was getting on football rookies and how he managed to catch a Saquon Barkley autograph on a steal.  Knowing I am a Celtics fan, he showed me a picture of a Jayson Tatum rookie autograph he scored for around $40 early last season that is now going in the hundreds.

I think the highest I ever paid for a single autograph was maybe about eight years ago I bought a Paul Pierce autograph, I think in the $30 range because he was the Celtic I grew up watching that I never got.  I got some deal buying authentics of him and Rondo together, like combined purchase discount.  During my season ticket years with the Suns, I would get both of them in person, which usually has more personal meaning to me.  The value is less but I really never feel like I would sell something like that.

After hanging out with that friend, I started browsing again and got a handful of little cards like a random Luke Kornet signed rookie I could get for $1.75 shipped, stuff like that mostly.  I picked up a few guys who values were high before and probably won't rise again but are still relatively young - dropping $5 on a Jahlil Okafor autographed rookie /199 and $6 on a Emmanuel Mudiay autograph rookie /299.  Again, $11 for two midquality player rookie autographs, cheaper than a box where the guarantee may be some guy who never made the league, let alone had the little bit of hype those two had at one point.  It's paid off before as I got a few Victor Oladipo autographs cheap when he got traded to OKC, which are up in value now that he made his All-Star debut.

Got a handful of things but the one I treated myself to, in part, shocked that I actually won, is on the way.  I saw a Celtics Kyrie Irving autographed card from this year that was numbered out of /25.  I somehow won that auction for $29.  A bit more than I normally pay but Kyrie at this point has solidified his career to the point I don't see the value really going down but I don't see myself ever getting his autograph under other circumstances.

The other "bargain" I got, another guy who's stock probably is way down and not going back up was I did win a Justice Winslow autograph rookie, I forget the numbering, for $4.44.  He used to be one of the most expensive in his draft class but think he is recognized as a career role player at this point.

Outside of trying to land a David Ortiz, I haven't looked too much outside basketball.  Just for fun I did get a Trayce Thompson (Klay Thompson's brother the MLB player) for cheap, which I thought would be fun since I have autographs of Klay and their dad Mychal.

Friend pointed me in the direction of a good insurance company for collectibles but apparently there's a caveat that the customer has to provide heavy proof of the insured property. So I've been digging into scanning all of my graded cards. All Frank Thomas (50) and Drew Brees (220) have been done. From here it's getting odds and ends baseball, mostly Saints players in football, a small bit of Basketball, and my Garbage Pail Kid graded collection is sneaking up on being respectable. I don't think my graded Magic the Gathering is going to impress anyone but I'll insure it to be safe.

Hoping I can knock out the remainder in the next four days.

Funny story, Baby Shoes, only time I ever ordered a specific card I also paid around $30 for a Paul Pierce Jersey Card and IIRC it was a 2008-2009 era card.

I still stick with boxes (actually getting several NHL Boxes today including a 2017-2018 SP Authentic) because I just like the rush of opening a pack and seeing what I get. With that said, I do prefer going for older boxes which may be a little cheaper but also have players who are "proven" by now so you kind of know whether a player's worth anything e.g. a Hall of Famer vs. a Nobody.

I "collect" the good cards but I'm not a hardcore collector in the sense that I care much about getting $$ out of this hobby really. I figure I can let my future kids get this and they can either look through/enjoy as I did or sell it off or whatever they want.

Definitely appreciate your sentiments, HQ.  I always loved the rush but the past few boxes I got, I just felt kinda burned by the contents.  No different than other gambling and I am guessing now that I starting getting all these random cards, I will probably be inspired to find a cheap box soon.

I always get a kick out of 'classic' card look because I grew up heavy card collecting from roughly 1989 - 1997 and kind of stopped around 2001/2002 or so. Even just looking at 1993-1996 cards on Ebay strikes such a hard nostalgic trip for me.

Been trying to sell more than buy on eBay these days but I started looking at some wrestling cards on eBay the other day, which I am not sure if folks want me posting in this thread.

Some of the newest WWE set has some VIP 1/1 cards.  I won from one seller 1/1 Lince Dorado and Riddick Moss cards for like $10 shipped and another seller I paid around $18 for 1/1 Ariya Daivari and a special 1/1 Nakamura.  Feel out of all of those Nakamura may eventually may be worth something but I am a sucker for 1/1 things.

My other big score, in my opinion, last night with minutes to go in the auction I stumbled across a /25 Tomasso Ciampa auto relic.  The relic was a 2-tone of one his shirts.  I actually ended up sneaking in the auction and winning for $15.50 shipped.  Noticing some of his straight up autos in the /199 range are going for more than that.  The signature from the picture looks great too, so really hoping this comes through.

Not a big modern guy, but I do have some decent "vintage" stuff:

The below is all stuff I picked up over the last year at card shows:

75 Topps George Brett Rookie

71-80 Topps Nolan Ryan cards  (full run of them)

1967 Topps Hank Aaron

82 Topps and Donruss Ripken rookies (not Traded though)

59 Topps Frank Robinson

64 Topps Frank Robinson

72 Topps Roberto Clemente

59 Topps Willie Mays

78 Topps Moliter/Tramm Rookie

74 Topps Winfield Rookie

71 Topps Al Kaline

84 Donruss Mattingly Rookie

Only modern card I have that is worth a shit is 2014 Topps Chrome Update Gold Refractor of Mookie Betts.  I got it out of a blaster box at Target like 4 years ago when a friend of mine told me to buy it, as I had no clue about modern cards.  I was just opening a blaster for old times sake.  When I pulled it I didn't even know it was a good pull at the time.  It was just sitting in my closet, but like a year ago I was going through some stuff, found it, and thought, "hey, he's turned out pretty good.  I bet this card is worth something".  So, turns out it was a nice pull considering that's the only modern product i've bought in years.

Well done nailing down those bargains. Both of those sets look great year in and year out.

Really liked the Crown Royale designs! Here are my 'hits' (most of the autos were of junk players and my best card in the lot was of a kicker, lol). I find my good luck revolves around getting elite names but are lower card numbers usually rather than the opposite.
