This is a really good card. But I feel like this has been one of the least hyped main events for a heavyweight title fight in a while. Feels like there's no steam behind this one.

agreed with YnA, but the UFC has been bad about pushing Stipe.

The top eight fights all involve the cream of the crop of their respective weight classes, Polo Reyes vs. Vick might be in that tier as well. I don't care about the FP prelims.

UFC hasn't been bad about pushing Stipe. UFC has been pissy and vindictive towards him because he played hardball with them over money.

Jared Gorden lives down the street from me (but is a Renzo guy), so I'm excited to see him in the big show (even if its on FP).

It would be dumb to push a heavyweight champion given how often they lose.

Cejudo hurt his hand and the fight is off. We've still been lucky with this one.

I highly, highly doubt he hurt his hand. It's fight week and he's doing hard sparring? Nah. He wasn't going to make weight.

Edit: Looking at how gaunt he looked at media day I'm 99.9% certain this is the case.

“I actually applaud Maia for taking this fight. It’s a tough fight. If you believe you’re the best in the world, you should fight anybody. You should fight all comers. That’s one of the problems that Tyron Woodley has and why the fans turn on Tyron Woodley. I respect Maia for taking this fight. It’s going to be a great fight and whoever wins this fight is obviously next in line for a title shot.”

As much as I love Maia and wanna see him get the title shot, if there's one guy I don't mind taking his shine, it's Masvidal. Been watching that guy since he had a potbelly and was repping MMA in the Kimbo north Miami backyard fight league days.

I'm riding with Maia but won't be upset if Jorge wins. Plus if Gamebred takes it and nets a title shot we'll see Woodley get excommunicated from ATT and he'll probably have a mini-meltdown over it.

I'm sorry, I like to have my cake and eat it too. Maia shouldn't have to stop the momentum Gamebred has to get a title shot and Gamebred should get a more exciting style match up to build him up.

I don't want to see either guy lose as a fan and from a business standpoint.

I feel like Gamebred can work his way up to a title shot again despite him being an OG he hasn't taken much damage. If Maia loses (and if he does I think it's by KO) then I dunno if he could, hence why I'm rooting for him.

Joanna Champion had to strip down to make weight about 10 minutes before the deadline.

Jared Gordon's fight is off because he had to go to the hospital last night.

I'm actually more interested in Maia/Masvidal, Joanna/Andrade, Yair/Edgar and yes even the trailer park scrap:

http://mmajunkie.com/2017/04/chas-skelly-on-jason-knight-scrap-theres-only-room-for-one-redneck-in-this-145-pound-ufc-trailer-park

than I am in the main event. Heavyweight is kind of a bullshit division, either of these guys winning would be a toss-up against a lot of other decent fighters in the division. I can't care that much about it. Even if it's exciting in the moment, it won't mean much by this point next year, imo.

I think Maia/Masvidal is going to go the same way Jacare/Whittaker went. The parallels are there if anyone's looking for them.

Except Maia isn't as slow as Jacare, isn't planning on striking with and is much bigger than Masvidal.

Never thought about that before but great point.

I think Edgar is being seriously overlooked. It's entirely possible that Yair tornado kicks his face off but outside of his tendency to get rocked Frankie is a smart fighter and kicking game aside Yair's boxing has at best looked average and at worst looked downright bad. I think Edgar will fight him in a phone booth, stay inside with combo's and a clinch game and not find himself at the range where Yair can unload his kicks.

Masvidal is the favorite so lots of people agree with the 209.

I'm still picking Maia, he's taken down every welterweight he's fought. I don't think Masvidal has the takedown defence of a Bobby Knuckles either, and I think the difference in BJJ is significant.

I'm also confident in Edgar. He looked a bit out of sorts against Stephens and the logic is that if one of those high kicks can rock you, a Yair one will kill you. But I think Edgar is still very talented and smart and will find a way to win. But the thing with Yair is guys like that improve by leaps and bounds every fight so I wouldn't bet on that one.

Maia is as slow as Jacare so I disagree with that, but I agree with the rest. That being said, I think having no intention of striking benefits guys as experienced as Masvidal because they know exactly what their opponent is going to do. This isn't a Condit case where the guy Maia is fighting is easy to take down, the opposite is the case. Jorge's TDD is actually better than Nelson and Laflare's, but it is relatively untested at 170 so I guess I understand why people are hesitant to believe in it. Still, I watch his other fights and I see that he hits guys hard in the clinch, he doesn't allow guys to just set their shit up. Mutante is a shit fighter, but he's a lot bigger and more powerful (and more roided) than Maia, and Masvidal fought him off the clinch and knocked him out.

I love Maia but he's also cutting a lot of weight and he's old. It surprises me but Masvidal also has longer arms, but he's short. He does for sure have the bigger gas tank and if you watch Maia/Brown again, it's pretty clear Maia gassed even though he was able to put Brown away anyway. I don't think you can get away with that against a top fighter. If I was his camp I would tell him to put pressure on Maia and force him to shoot without setting it up. Whittaker fought it the same way. You can't allow fighters like that to play their game.

The argument against Masvidal would be all of Maia's wins as well as Masvidal/Khabilov.

It is but it isn't as significant as people expect. Masvidal has literally never been held down for a decision loss and look at the guys he's fought. They're definitely not all multi-faceted, but I would have expected a power wrestler like Khabilov to hold him down, or Bendo, Chiesa, Gilbert, Healy, etc. Maia is bigger than those guys but again I go back to the weight cut, there's definitely the potential for it to take something out of Maia at his age. Masvidal said 155 definitely took something from him.

Masvidal said he wasn't training anything except for striking and defensive wrestling, though. I don't think that's automatically a bad thing though, because you look at how Rumble trained for DC last time and uh...there's really nothing you can gain from preparing to roll on the ground against a specialized fighter like this.

If I didn't have to cash out a few days ago and if Masvidal wasn't the favorite, I'd drop a bet on him.

I'm picking Yair, Junior, and Andrade in the other big fights. I probably shouldn't look past Stipe but I know Junior hits a lot harder than the shot Stipe got knocked down with by the Reem.

I base the Yair pick on two things. One is Edgar getting buzzed a lot and the other is Yair's ability to keep Edgar out of punching range.

Junior especially. Aside from getting dropped by Overeem we haven't seen Stipe take much damage since their first fight. JDS has had the Cain fights plus the war with Stipe, the Hunt fight and getting stopped by Reem too.

Eddie was going to win that fight but they should fight again. Result was definitely in doubt and they'll both get wrecked by elite fighters, so no reason to fight somebody else.

There are also better pure wrestlers than Frankie in this division. So that's it for the idea of Yair being a contender as far as I'm concerned.

Jorge never pressed the gas pedal. I would've been pissed if he won the dec. 30-27 Maia  in a closer fight than that shows. I actually think Jorge gets a finish in a 5 rounder.
