RIP to one of the OG's of lightweight fighting who at one point was considered the P4P best in the game. When MMA revolved around Japan in the early 2000's he was THE guy, I read that his kickboxing match against Masato on NYE drew 30 million viewers which is fucking insane, no North American fighter can come close to touching those numbers especially on New Years.

RIZIN in a few weeks is going to be super emotional with his protégé Kyoji Horiguchi taking on Tenshin in a kickboxing bout which is an eerie parallel to Kid's fight in 2004.

@kid_yamamoto is a fuckin beast, so many people would have gave up last year with what this MAN had to endure, another level of Champion, unparalleled will power, there’s is levels to this shit and KID is at the top... thank you @melchormanibusan so much for everything you did and I know you would do the same for all of us 😢... Nori (Kid) messaged me a few months ago asking to come and stay in Hawaii to visit, But kid never showed up, @rich_chou called me one day and told me Kid is sick and is in Guam, Kid would always make me feel so important even when he was the biggest fighting star in Japan and the world thank you for always believing in me

Getting his whiskey on the canvas for all of his fights is a pretty sweet deal on his part. No one else could have pulled that off.

Conor is the best trash-talker in the history of the game. The references that he was dropping on Khabib likely flew over the heads of 95% of both media and fans but they were fucking brilliant, then mocking Ali Abdel-Aziz as a terrorist snitch and bringing up his son that he's a deadbeat dad to, fucking genius.

Barao. Good lord. Losing to a guy who doesn’t even have a Wikipedia entry. USADA or not what a decline.

He missed weight as well and is now 2-6 in his last eight fights. I imagine he's cut after this.

I skipped this event because it looked like trash but I did see Sakai cement himself as a prospect.

Also, I didn't want to see Alvey take advantage of Legendary Lil Nog's fading status, so when I saw the result this morning LOL

It's crazy to think him and Big Nog are twins, and he did this 7 years after Big Nog had that dramatic old dawg win over Schaub. That just shows how bad a fighter Sam Alvey is.

Serious question: is Charles Oliviera the greatest submission fighter in UFC history? He beat Royce's record on Saturday  and even before beating it his accomplishments were arguably more impressive because he's fighting modern day athletes with no gi and a limited ruleset.

Social media is poppin' off that Eddie Alvarez is finalizing a deal with ONE FC. If so, wow. Didn't see that coming. I don't think there's anything wrong with an OG vet like Eddie fighting for the biggest payday at this point in his career but at the same time you can't say that he has any interest in fighting top level competition because if he did he'd be re-signing with the UFC or going back to Bellator.

Sounds like this is a done deal. Hopefully Eddie is getting a serious payday.

I wonder if anything is written into the contract about either guy returning at any point. I want to see Askren in the UFC but not if it means we see MM leave.

Having said that, good chance Johnson is getting a sick payday being that his manager is also a VP in ONE.

Anybody with above- average takedown defence would give Askren problems. I don't see him having any chance against Woodley, Covington or Usman.

http://teameverlast.everlast.com/the-dwyer-score-ufc-fight-night-volkan-oezdemir-vs-anthony-smith/

So only 3 fighters (THREE!) on the entire card for Saturday have won their last fight and Anthony Smith is the only one with a winning streak...……at two fights. The scoring doesn't include guys like Chris Fishgold making their debuts cause his win streak is real good but holy shit this is the loser-est card in forever.

Actually, Askren and Woodley are training partners and won’t fight. But those other two? If Askren is still at a high level, I think he DECs them pretty easy.

I don't think I've ever changed my opinion on a fighter as much as I have on Anthony Smith. I guess the weight cut really had an effect on him. His jiu jitsu is legit even though he made a dumb mistake to not get up in the second round, when Volkan just rode him out for two minutes. He seems to be a good tactical striker also, and has good range and reach.

I think he has the style to beat Cormier and Gus at 205, but not Roided Jones or Rumble. In the USADA era, I still have to see Jones perform to get a good read on him.

Volkan's RNC defence was p. bad but he was getting worn down before that anyway.

Smith is a walking indictment of LHW. And he's not that good either. Dom Reyes would fuck him up if that fight happens.

Great win for Smith. But LHW is just a bad division right now. I hope he’s really turned the corner and is as good as he’s showing. But I’m leaning towards it being a paper thin division outside of DC, Jones, and Gus.

Smith is a gritty action fighter who's good everywhere and not great anywhere. He lost to Mutante and Santos at MW and was also getting beaten by both Lombard and Andrew Sanchez prior to finishing them in the 3rd, much like the Volkan fight. I have nothing against him personally but he won the lottery by fighting Rashad and Shogun in a row prior to getting this fight. I'll echo the sentiments that he doesn't get past DC, Gus or Jones and I think the wrestling of guys like Corey Anderson and Misha would give him a lot of trouble.

Sijara Eubanks missed weight, which I suppose we all should have expected after 1. blowing it at the TUF finale and 2. all the jawing she was doing after losing the main event at 230.

It’s pretty damn funny. She’s been non stop on twitter bitching about losing this title fight. I’ve never seen her fight. And her record is crap. But he twitter trash talk was fun... and now this.

She appeared to be a decent fighter on TUF.  WAY better than her record would indicate.

The problem with taking her seriously as a legit threat is two-fold:

1) Its the TUF crew, so they're a step down from the top level women (ex: the Strawweight season just getting murdered one by one by Joanna)
2) She can't ever make weight.  She's clearly a smaller bantamweight, and just clings desperately to the size advantage.

Anybody who thinks this will be anything other then a boxing match is fooling themselves. Floyd isn't dumb enough to try anything beyond straight hands against Tenshin otherwise he's a dead man.

Agreed that it will be boxing rules. But Floyd fighting under an MMA banner, especially in a foreign country, is huge news. He hasn't fought outside of Vegas since '05 as well.

This could potentially be a huge boost for Rizin's popularity too, I don't know enough about the business to know. But Floyd has global name recognition. He is particularly popular in Japan, and this may get many locals to give Rizin a chance that otherwise wouldn't have.

I'm guessing it will be an "exhibition" match.  Tenshin is a top 10 fighter in his class who is undefeated so I doubt Rizin would risk him getting finished by Mayweather in a straight boxing match.

And on the other hand Floyd isn't going to risk his 0 either. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a work much like the Fedor/Aoki exhibition grappling match a few years back.

What a goddamn fight! Seeing Sung get flatlined at the very last second was so damn shocking.

I thought Yair was going to win initially. I didn’t think he’d get it at 24:59. I was into the fight and wasn’t scoring it that closely. Was he losing?

Solid card on Saturday night, really good and measured performance by Ponzi. Magny is good enough to beat top guys on nights when he's on but this was a fight Ponzi was supposed to win and he looked great. Awesome jab, brutal leg kicks, cardio held up. I'd like to see him take on Till next.

Darren Elkins got brutalized (again) and honestly should think about hanging them up. The Mirsad comeback win was one for the ages and a great moment for him but with each fight that goes by the case for him being an average fighter who's just ridiculously tough gets stronger. I know that it's unlikely but if they could get Lamas to fill in and fight Moicano on the Toronto card in a few weeks that would be sick.

I really hope that Pantoja is one of the flyweights that they keep around and move up to BW, dude is ridiculously good. Since 2008 he's only lost to Formiga and Dustin Ortiz and the latter fight was really close too.
