On Facebook, one of the better players to come out of my alma mater posted a picture of some of the NFL and CFL cards he's appeared on in his career. I commented on it citing having some but not all of those. I also mentioned I have some that he doesn't. So he's expressed a willingness to send me some of his extras, "Since I know you're a collector." I immediately responded and saying I'll absolutely send him some that I have that he's missing.

Like I thought it was stretch we'd ever really interact when he approved my friend request a while back, but he apparently pays attention to my posts (I have albums for the various players I collect, including one specifically from Nicholls State alumni who randomly will get tagged). I'm probably more excited about this than a grown man should responsibly be, but fuck it, I got acknowledged  8) .

*deal alert*

COMC.com sellers are having spring cleaning sales this week. The site software is pissing us off because it isn't 100% showing sale prices until you click on the actual card for some of us. COMC allows you to buy singles over time and then bulk ship them for one flat cost, if you have an account. Also on non-sale weeks you can offer percentages off the asking price if you have store credit (actual percentages vary per seller preferences).

I actually listed a bunch of stuff on clearance below listing cost just to move some of the shit. But then I'm also buying other peoples' cards at the same time.

my shop in spoiler:

That's awesome, Harley! The time I bought a box of National Treasures was from them and they really hooked me up with free stuff as well.

I don't know if you fool with grading, but BGS in the spring changed their price scheme (emphasis on scheme it would seem) and did away with 20 and 45 day guarantees. Now anything past the 10 day guarantee price point is "Non-guaranteed" and is listed as "20-60 days."

My group sub guy sent in some cards in May. We are on business day 86 right now. On Friday we were told, "Shipping Monday." Last I checked, my cards are not in the pop report. I think after he gets this submission back I'm taking a grading break until they get their house in order.

Apparently there's a labor shortage, unexpected influx of submissions, and not a lot of people wanting to grade. Knowing what I do know about the economics of this branch of the hobby, they are making a KILLING on this part of the hobby. You can't tell me there's not people in the Dallas area that are teachable to this job, okay with the tedium, and willing to make $65k. I really think that is an okay price point to pay a grader with the expertise required, and the money they are raking in (via my estimations).

If PSA wasn't so inferior in my opinion, I'd give them a look. Also, not to understate, but I'm pretty OCD about my cards and I don't exactly want to change horses mid race.

Is there a good resource online to look up cards? I've got a ton of stuff from when I was younger ('87-'88 or so) and I'm interested to see what they're worth.

The easiest/simplist way is Ebay and scoping out what your cards have sold for as a rough estimation. Price guides are virtually useless now IMO as the market is ever changing and, especially with the immediacy of the internet, a book value may be drastically different just months down the road (e.g. if a player enters the HOF or suddenly dies or what not).

Hassan Whiteside 16/49
Star Factor Insert - Russell Westbrook
Phenoms Jersey Patch & Autograph - Dwight Powell - 64/99

It's funny.  I almost pulled a trigger on a box yesterday because it's been a while and I had a $24.79 eBay bucks certificate expiring yesterday but I realized the last box I bought it is still kinda just sitting in the box, all unwrapped, on a shelf so I held firm.  Curous to thee the break when you get there.

My interest in cards has really gone down the last few years.    Panini's monopoly of the two sports I care about breaking just kills it.

My interest in cards has really gone down the last few years.    Panini's monopoly of the two sports I care about breaking just kills it.

What kills me is how much there is just from a single producer, reminds me of the 90s overabundance of the market place.

2017 Topps MLB: Allen & Ginter, Archives (+ Signature Series, SS Postseason, & Snapshots), Bunt, Chrome (+ Jumbo & Mega Box), Clearly Authentic, Definitive, Diamond Icons, Dynasty, Finest, Fire, Five Star, Gallery, Gold Label, Gypsy Queen, Heritage (+ High Number & Minor League), High Tek, Inception, Luminaries, Museum Collection, Opening Day, Pro Debut, Series 1 (+ Jumbo & Relic), Series 2 (+ Jumbo), Stadium Club, Sticker, Top Tier One, Tribute, Triple Threads, Update Series (+ Jumbo)

Come the fuck on, Topps. I couldn't even tell you the difference between most of them with the exception of maybe 4 beyond how many packs per box/cards within each pack.

I think the card companies took the cue of the video game deals and got exclusivity.  I think they think if they make all these variations it makes up for all the different companies, which isn't true.  When I was going ultra heavy on collecting a couple years back, you'd get the same picture on a lot of cards across the line - not something that would happen when you had all the different companies/brands to choose from.  Granted, some values have held in the present market due to not over-saturating everything but the aesthetic has gone down, IMO.

I like the patch on that Judge one.  Hopefully it holds some kind of value.  I feel patches got so saturated they aren't worth what they used to be.

First time doing a real Bowman box break.

The 2011 Break was pretty shitty outside of a 087/599 Green Shelby Miller. Also had a Gold base parallel of Dustin Pedroia & Adrian Gonzalez, Green base parallel of Troy Tulowitzki, and Red base parallel of Hunter Pence.

2012 was slightly better with Autograph of Daniel Norris, Clay Holmes Gold 335/399 (Put up good #s at AAA in 2017, could hit MLB in 2018), 116/399 Martinez Perez Green, 162/199 Blue Jedd Gyorko, and Gold base parallels of C.J. Wilson, Desmond Jennings, Justin Morneau, and a Red base parallel of Alex Gordon.

$8 at goodwill. Low risk, high reward.

edit

Pack fresh Jerry Rice rookie! One of the Young rookies came from the bag of loose cards. Everything else was in packs. I pulled like 4 Mongo McMichael cards. Just one Rice though.

So for spending like $118 or so, here are the "main hits". Overall, not bad at all with a few particularly great hits (Ricky Williams, Rodgers/Nelson, Bob Griese) and a few others that are very solid (Alex Collins, Michael Strahan, the 2 Demaryius Thomas, and the Welker/Sanders/Thomas/Latimer quad patch).

Ricky Williams - Autograph 09/15
Thunder & Lightning 2nd Down: Aaron Rodgers/Jordy Nelson 29/49
Brian Hill - Rookie Card 49/50
Bob Griese - 54/99
Playoff Autograph Serial #d: Alex Collins 101/199
Michael Strahan - 070/299
Ryan Switzer - Rookie Card 132/299
Demaryius Thomas - 297/299 & Jersey Patch 289/299
Quad Jersey Patch: Wes Welker, Emmanuel Sanders, Julius Thomas, and Cody Latimer
Rookie Ink: William Jackson III
Rookie Force Jersey Patch: Connor Cook & Jersey Patch: Connor Cook

Final Thoughts: I prefer Clearance/Bargain binning where possible as the above shows. May not get the "elite" super new hits but you can get great steals too. I also prefer the cards/packs that include potential Autographs/Jersey Patches of veteran players in the NFL and not just the rookies (e.g. the Panini Prestige box which is basically rookies and little else).

I was thinking about it. If the Rice were better centered I would have sent it in no doubt. I’m not sure how much centering factors in to grading.

BGS algorithm is very heavily weighted on centering.

TE Jake Roh PP Auto is 7/10 (ironically he just got cut by the Atlanta Falcons, lol)
QB Mason Rudolph PP is 20/25
QB Logan Woodside PP is 23/25
TE Durham Smythe PP Auto is 5/25
RB Jaylen Samuels Premium Portrait Auto is 4/10
OLB Harold Landry is 17/250
WR Keke Coutee is 121/250
RB Malik Williams is 240/250

That's all on top of autos from Roquan Smith(!), Sony Michel(!), Mike Gesicki(!), and Tremaine Edmunds(!). Even not numbered, that's a pretty solid group.

As much fun as I have breaking boxes, I've talked myself out of boxes in recent times.  I go through these peaks where rather than the fun of the box, it sometimes makes more sense to me just invest in the cards I want - which tend to be autographs or like rookies of top prospects or plays on teams meaningful to me, regardless of their star power.

A buddy of mine told me about all the great eBay deals he was getting on football rookies and how he managed to catch a Saquon Barkley autograph on a steal.  Knowing I am a Celtics fan, he showed me a picture of a Jayson Tatum rookie autograph he scored for around $40 early last season that is now going in the hundreds.

I think the highest I ever paid for a single autograph was maybe about eight years ago I bought a Paul Pierce autograph, I think in the $30 range because he was the Celtic I grew up watching that I never got.  I got some deal buying authentics of him and Rondo together, like combined purchase discount.  During my season ticket years with the Suns, I would get both of them in person, which usually has more personal meaning to me.  The value is less but I really never feel like I would sell something like that.

After hanging out with that friend, I started browsing again and got a handful of little cards like a random Luke Kornet signed rookie I could get for $1.75 shipped, stuff like that mostly.  I picked up a few guys who values were high before and probably won't rise again but are still relatively young - dropping $5 on a Jahlil Okafor autographed rookie /199 and $6 on a Emmanuel Mudiay autograph rookie /299.  Again, $11 for two midquality player rookie autographs, cheaper than a box where the guarantee may be some guy who never made the league, let alone had the little bit of hype those two had at one point.  It's paid off before as I got a few Victor Oladipo autographs cheap when he got traded to OKC, which are up in value now that he made his All-Star debut.

Got a handful of things but the one I treated myself to, in part, shocked that I actually won, is on the way.  I saw a Celtics Kyrie Irving autographed card from this year that was numbered out of /25.  I somehow won that auction for $29.  A bit more than I normally pay but Kyrie at this point has solidified his career to the point I don't see the value really going down but I don't see myself ever getting his autograph under other circumstances.

The other "bargain" I got, another guy who's stock probably is way down and not going back up was I did win a Justice Winslow autograph rookie, I forget the numbering, for $4.44.  He used to be one of the most expensive in his draft class but think he is recognized as a career role player at this point.

Outside of trying to land a David Ortiz, I haven't looked too much outside basketball.  Just for fun I did get a Trayce Thompson (Klay Thompson's brother the MLB player) for cheap, which I thought would be fun since I have autographs of Klay and their dad Mychal.

Friend pointed me in the direction of a good insurance company for collectibles but apparently there's a caveat that the customer has to provide heavy proof of the insured property. So I've been digging into scanning all of my graded cards. All Frank Thomas (50) and Drew Brees (220) have been done. From here it's getting odds and ends baseball, mostly Saints players in football, a small bit of Basketball, and my Garbage Pail Kid graded collection is sneaking up on being respectable. I don't think my graded Magic the Gathering is going to impress anyone but I'll insure it to be safe.

Hoping I can knock out the remainder in the next four days.

Funny story, Baby Shoes, only time I ever ordered a specific card I also paid around $30 for a Paul Pierce Jersey Card and IIRC it was a 2008-2009 era card.

I still stick with boxes (actually getting several NHL Boxes today including a 2017-2018 SP Authentic) because I just like the rush of opening a pack and seeing what I get. With that said, I do prefer going for older boxes which may be a little cheaper but also have players who are "proven" by now so you kind of know whether a player's worth anything e.g. a Hall of Famer vs. a Nobody.

I "collect" the good cards but I'm not a hardcore collector in the sense that I care much about getting $$ out of this hobby really. I figure I can let my future kids get this and they can either look through/enjoy as I did or sell it off or whatever they want.

Definitely appreciate your sentiments, HQ.  I always loved the rush but the past few boxes I got, I just felt kinda burned by the contents.  No different than other gambling and I am guessing now that I starting getting all these random cards, I will probably be inspired to find a cheap box soon.

I always get a kick out of 'classic' card look because I grew up heavy card collecting from roughly 1989 - 1997 and kind of stopped around 2001/2002 or so. Even just looking at 1993-1996 cards on Ebay strikes such a hard nostalgic trip for me.

Been trying to sell more than buy on eBay these days but I started looking at some wrestling cards on eBay the other day, which I am not sure if folks want me posting in this thread.

Some of the newest WWE set has some VIP 1/1 cards.  I won from one seller 1/1 Lince Dorado and Riddick Moss cards for like $10 shipped and another seller I paid around $18 for 1/1 Ariya Daivari and a special 1/1 Nakamura.  Feel out of all of those Nakamura may eventually may be worth something but I am a sucker for 1/1 things.

My other big score, in my opinion, last night with minutes to go in the auction I stumbled across a /25 Tomasso Ciampa auto relic.  The relic was a 2-tone of one his shirts.  I actually ended up sneaking in the auction and winning for $15.50 shipped.  Noticing some of his straight up autos in the /199 range are going for more than that.  The signature from the picture looks great too, so really hoping this comes through.
