I'll start this thread off...

Kid Cudi - Can I Be

Hm. I just listened to This Year's Model not two hours ago.

I know I'm supposed to sit back and let the board develop organically and all that jazz, but I'd also like to throw up a nice big "can we not?" on threads that are just dissociated notations of songs being played. I didn't like them there and I don't like them here. The idea was that they were meant to be catalysts for further discussion, but it's never really worked out that way, has it? We're moving onward and upward. So yeah. Food for thought.

Posted by: snuffbox March 29, 2009 10:59 pm
Maybe rather than just typing in the song we could say a little bit about? Why we're listening to it, interesting song-related anecdote, a review, etc.

Quote
Posted by: Bananarama - Cruel Summer March 29, 2009 11:07 pm
Yeah, that's cool. I'm not going to enforce it, of course, but it would be neat to have things to read. I'm not asking for full-blown essays or anything, I just worry that when we have these threads full of posts that didn't require thinking, they leave the rest of the folder to die somehow. I'm trying to say "I don't give a shit that you're listening to a song" in the most diplomatic way I can.

Timbaland Featuring Jay-Z - Lobster And Scrimp

Great production from Timbo, and Jay Z said one of my favorite lines ever in this song.

It ain't nothin but beginners, and y'all in the game
but y'all can't ball like Chicago centers

!!!'s Louden Up Now. I once disliked this band and this album in particular, but, a couple years after Myth Takes—an album that finally sold me on this band—I decided to give this one another shot.

It's good, but maybe just a little too samey, something that the dynamic and a little more all over the place Myth Takes is not. Sounds like they're still hung up on their ESG records. Also, and this may take some getting use to, Nic Offer's lyrics are awfully dumb. Most song lyrics are, I know, but you get something like "Pardon My Freedom" which, well:

And you can tell the President to suck my fucking dick
Does that sound intelligent? Like I give a fucking frick
Tell the FBI put me on the list because Lennon wasn't this dangerous
Call the Christians, tell them all that I'm taller than Jesus

I'm sure this is meant to be ironic and faux-edgy-cool, but it's so, so, so bad. The lyrics are pretty dumb on Myth Takes, too, but Offer's vocals are mixed low enough to not be a bother.

Quote
Posted by: Bananarama - Cruel Summer March 30, 2009 04:58 pm
That's the only !!! album I have and I don't really like it. "When the Going Gets Tough..." and "Pardon My Freedom" have sufficiently cool intros to be good bumpers on some sort of mildly edgy talk radio program, but every song on there invariably loses its steam if it had it in the first place ("Me and Giuliani" never does). I don't think they're doing anything others aren't doing better.

Quote
Posted by: Incandenza March 30, 2009 05:09 pm
I like "Me and Giuliani," but that part around the 4-minute mark feels like it should break into this anthemic, epic thing and it...just....doesn't. It tries, though. It's the only moment in a !!! song where burying Nic Offer's vocals work against it, though I don't think making them stand out more would help. He keeps this sort of emotional distance that someone like James Murphy—see "All My Friends"—would just go balls-out on.

Yeah weird sentence structure though (lol black people) but the implication there is that Chicago centers can't ball, not that people can't ball as well as they do.

I'm sure Joakim Noah is furious to know this, once he gets done listening to the sounds of his inner anus.

Mastodon's Crack The Skye for the third time since I bought it yesterday. Incandenza, you were half-right about this having the same curve as Blood Mountain, only this is better.

My only bitch: they're really wearing the King Crimson on their sleeves at points in the second half of this one. That said, the lifting is tasteful.

Well the song was made when Noah was still in Junior High School, so he has nothing to be mad about.

It's the first single off the new album Songs of the Universe. It's got kind of an Exciter vibe to it, albeit with more analog. I'm warming up to it, but I'm skeptical about the album itself. Granted, I loved their last album (Playing the Angel but judging from mixed advanced word (it's already leaked), I'll see.

"Imma Put It On Her" Day26 f/ Young Joc & Diddy

Its the new single off the new Day26 album "forever in a day". Young Joc sounds great in tracks with simple beats in them as he is a complete Ma$e clone. I like every verse but diddy as he plugs too much of his own shit in a song about picking up a chick and going for a one night stand. The beat is just fucking hot, and the verses are ok. This song might make me want to pick it up. The other two songs off the album I heard are great.

I agree. Here's what I got right now:

Ludacris & Common - "Do The Right Thing"

Luda goes 'conscious'. I guess it's ok, but I normally can't stand Luda over any beat for any of his songs (that is, I prefer it when he features on other artists' songs - though there are a couple of exceptions). That's true here as well. Though, like always Luda does bring the passion even if he's annoying. Common is his usual self, nothing better, nothing worse.

B-52s "Dance This Mess Around"

In my opinion, they're one of the most underrated bands. They've never put out an outright awful album (Good Stuff did test my patience). But nothing compares to the self-titled album and Wild Planet. None of the lyrics ever make any sense. What the fuck kind of drugs were they doing? Yet the strained voices of Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson often brings tears to my eyes. Fred Schneider is the one that makes me wanna dance. "Give Me Back My Man" is gorgeous and heartfelt but at the same time has weird lyrics like this:

I'll give you fish
I'll give you candy
I'll give you everything I have in my hand

Incidentally, their new album Funplex is a return to form and roughly 10 times better than I expected.

The B-52s are too gimmicky to warrant any serious consideration. It's hard to overrate or underrate them because they just are what they are. To whom do I compare them? R.E.M.?

I wouldn't call them gimmicky. I'd call the Insane Clown Posse or Cletus Judd gimmicky.

They stick to their style of music and don't try to stray which is probably one of the main reasons I love them and probably the reason you think they're gimmicky. I get your point though. Underrated may have been the wrong word - overlooked may be a better word. Put one of their early records on at a party and it will work more often than not.

I wouldn't compare them to R.E.M. because R.E.M. tries to get too political and personal which is a turn-off for me when I'm in the mood to dance or if I'm just driving. It's hard to compare them to anyone - maybe Blondie?

Cream - "Tales of Brave Ulysses" (Off their Very Best CD)

One of my favorite Cream songs (helps it was featured on BTVS twice) and I love the wah wah pedal use.  The bass is one of the most memorable out there and the vocals are just so solid without having to overpower the rest of the song.  I'm constantly surprised that the song's under 3:00.  It's a credit to the song that it feels like its around 4:00 instead.

It isn't that good.

I'm listening to "Gideon's Bible" by John Cale, which is pretty much the only song on his debut outing Vintage Violence that I really like. I guess "Amsterdam" is okay, but not as good as the Jacques Brel song of the same name or the Scott Walker cover of said Brel song. The rest of it is just a bunch of campy pseudo-country tossoffs that never clicked with me. I guess he can get a mulligan for this one, the same way Lou gets one for his self-titled solo album that nobody talks about, the one that came out before Transformer.

I like "Hello, There" and "Cleo" well enough, but agreed that Vintage Violence isn't anything special aside from "Gideon's Bible."  I've actually never heard the first Lou Reed solo album.  I should change that.

Yes I have! No, it's not the worst thing--Lou's had worse solo outings--but it's pretty offensive to put the Velvet Underground name on Doug Yule and some session men. If Squeeze had been released as a Doug Yule album, it might've gone down as a mildly favored curiosity rather than an example of what happens when you get a really shitty manager. Anyway, it's pretty MOR.

The Lou Reed s/t is interesting in that it has an early extended version of "Berlin" similar to the live one on Take No Prisoners. It's not as good as the stripped-down morose one on the great album with which it shares its name, but I like the added parts. "Lisa Says" is on here too, which I think was on that VU outtake album. Lou got about three albums out of the Velvet Underground's scrap heap.

I've never heard the Fischerspooner song but this is possibly one of the better Nirvana mashups I've heard and is really captivating, between the isolated vocals from Kurt to the steady bass thump.  A fun trancey treat.

Listening to a shitty quality leak of Conor Oberst' latest solo album. On first listen it seems kinda dull and thrown together haphazardly.  I enjoyed his first solo effort and I think it's one of the sleepers of 2008. Conor only actually sings on 7 of the 16 songs, various members of his band on the others [with mixed results].

His first album grew on me, so may be a bit too early to write it off.

Phantomsmasher-"Digit Dirt"

Think Fantomas meets Aphex Twin. Super noisy, blasty, kind of heavy. Those unfamiliar with James Plotkin should get familiar, and familiar fast.

Rufus Wainwright - Slideshow.

Abso-fucking-lutely gorgeous. His gay ass. Whatever. I've got this as one of the ringtones on my phone, but it takes a minute for the chorus to rev up so it's sort of moot. It sums up a couple of pseudo- and real relationships I've had. Must've been the "medication." I made a girl melt when I sang along to this once (perfectly, I might add), so it's good for that at least. I couldn't get the damn embedded mp3 like a couple of posts up, despite signing up for the website and everything. Kinda frustrating, but the song soothes me.

I want the remix of "Everybody's Free to Feel Good" that was in the first episode of the second season. I've searched for it far and wide, in vain. It was fuckin' awesome too.

I'm really smitten with the Pretenders song "Back on the Chain Gang."  That said, I find the "ooh, ahh" chain gang chant on the chorus to be pretty embarrassing. I don't know how I managed to not notice that when hearing the song a million times on classic rock radio, but it didn't really register for me until I d/led it recently.  Still, it's a fucking gorgeous song.  I probably relate to the sentiment too much.

Anyway, in the unlikely event that you've never heard this song before:

The Pretenders.- Back on the chain gang

Herb Alpert - This Guy's In Love With You

I've been on a weird Burt Bacharach kick ever since watching an informercial for some Classic Soft Rock CD collection early one morning.

Mad Capsule Markets - Kumo

I used to listen to this all the time before hitting the beach. Makes me feel like borrowing my neighbor's board and just surfing the day away.

All right, so that Pretenders song is now on the short list of tunes that can make me cry at the tail end of two-day binges.  Particularly on the verse coming out of the middle eight.  Kills me every time.  What became of the kid that her and Ray Davies had?  It should be about my age, I'd guess.  It's sort of hard to imagine the child of two great songwriters working middle management at a pencil company, but I must admit that I've never heard anything about his music career if he has one.

I'm going to agree with you on everything, re: Pretenders. The song is near-perfect in almost every category.

Here's a Selena cover, with different lyrics:

Selena:"Fotos Y Recuerdos"

Gavin Rossdale - Glycerine (live spring break)

Gavin Rossdale performing "Glycerine" live during '96 Spring Break.  Just guitar and his vocals in the rain.  One of my favorite live video performances and really the only time I've liked the performance of the song in part because of the way the vocals really standout.
