You're more than welcome.  It'll be the first show I ever watch with the new girlfriend.  She's not a fan but she's willing to learn about the sport and watch it with me.  The downside is I have to watch Grey's Anatomy with her.

My last girlfriend's first taste of MMA was Rashad knocking Chuck clear in to next century... she had just shown up at my house like 3 minutes prior, which was a good sign considering I hadn't seen her naked yet and that fight went on at like midnight.

She wasn't a fan, though.

Mine watched 101 with me last Saturday and the first thing she pointed out the "guy with the gay tattoo" aka Josh Neer. She also thought the Amir stoppage was bullshit and greatly enjoyed Andy's entrance music.

Opening video - Sweaty Gina in tight clothes and heavying breasts....flash to Cyborg grimacing and lifting some random huge weight

Awesome booking.

Cris "The Muay Thai Machine" Cyrborg? Isn't one nickname enough? And that's not even getting into the contradiction between the two.

Werdum wins fairly easily

Quote
Fabricio Werdum beat Mike Kyle fast. It went to the ground quickly. Kyle tried an armbar but didn't come close, then Werdum pulled him into a guillotine for the submission. Pretty much exactly as one would expect.

Mike Kyle is too small to be a HW anyway. 219 just isn't going to cut it these days.

Werdum is only 228 but he's got the jiu-jitsu to remain competitive.

And these keys to win or whatever are sort of puzzling.  I don't think I've ever seen Ishida use the clinch knee very often and I've never seen Melendez attempt a triangle.

Fucking cold blooded. He looked like he was sleepwalking out there... and the near wink he gave the camera during the staredowns was great.

I'm not surprised that he beat Babalu... please tell me he was the favorite going in or I'll be kicking myself for not placing a bet.

I can't wait for the Taylor/Chavez-esque arguments that fights shouldn't be stopped with only seconds left in a round.

I don't think I've ever seen a fighter stand up and give up a full mount before. That was completely incompetent.

I've always thought the reason Dana White didn't want her was because he thought she was just a flash in the pan that was over solely for her looks. Based on tonight, that might not have been wrong.

Just watched the fight after seeing this discussion. Carano didn't really seem to have a clue in that match...looked like she maybe got disoriented early and never really got a competent offense going. The part where she had Cyborg down and was punching her (very weakly, it looked like), and then just stood up was really a head scratcher. She also kept turning away to cover up like she was completely overwhelmed.

It wasn't even like Cyborg was unstoppable. She made a few mistakes that easily could have been capitalised on.

To be honest, I'm not a huge follower of Carano's in-ring career, so maybe someone can help me out here. She was undefeated prior to this, right? So, were her previous opponents serious contenders or easily beatable girls brought in to make her look good? Was Cyborg her first real challenge?

Carano fought smaller fighters up to this point.

Line of the year has to be:

Also, both have terrible wrestling.

Carano didn't necessarily give up mount, Cyborg pushed her hips out, shrimped, and got a leg in between the two.  I imagine she didn't want Cyborg going for another heel hook so she pulled away.  Her problem was not keeping a heavy enough base (not a very high mount nor did she have the greatest foot positioning) and not being strategic while in a dominant position.  This allowed Cyborg, who was the stronger of the two, to easily move Carano off.  Given the pace the two were at, Carano would have been better off extending her body weight by driving her hips down and basing out on her hands and slowing it down and trying to peck at Cyborg rather than go for an all-out flurry.

I don't mean to denigrate Carano's legitimate skills.  Gina really did amass a 12-1-1 record in Muay Thai, traveling to Thailand and beating the Thais at their own game.  However much one downplays the quality of competition available at Carano's weight class, she was in there, throwing punches, receiving strikes, and truly competing in a brutal sport.  And she did all this when there really wasn't any reason to think she could make huge sums of money and gain worldwide fame.  She has since garnered a 7-0 record in MMA.  She's been protected so far in her career (her last four opponents were coming off losses prior to fighting Carano; one opponent had never fought MMA before; and another had only one fight when fighting Gina), but she's put on entertaining, show-stealing performances, and most importantly, she's simply won.

The Strikeforce promoter is usually calm and cool under the worst of circumstances, and the weeks leading up to the show featured plenty of them, as several matches had to be rearranged for various reasons. But he thought he had a nightmare scenario on his hands the night before the show.

At about 9:30 p.m. on Friday night, on a show where every major match but the main event fell apart, Coker got a phone call from the Santos camp. They were apologetic, saying that they had no idea beforehand, but that when the commission was testing Santos, they found out that she was pregnant and the fight was off.

Coker fell for it … though later he was told it was a prank. Good thing for Coker – and for Santos.

So as an occassional follower of MMA, what does Strikeforce do with the women's division from here?  Does Strikeforce attempt to build Gina back up with some victories and give Cyborg some title defenses and attempt to stage a rematch down the line (albeit not at the top of the card)?  I wonder if this is going to be one of those Laila Ali situations where it is tough to find sufficient challengers for Cyborg and Strikeforce has a dead women's division now.  It can't help from a promoting perspective that Gina is not the champ, but maybe you can still promote her in a "comeback"-type way to garner some attention.

And I feel sorry for anyone that had to buy this show on pay-per-view.

If I'm not mistaken and they really have signed Coenen, then Strikeforce might be serious about getting some females that can physically match-up to Carano & Santos. Good for the division, maybe not so much for those two.

Read a lot of things today about how exciting and exhilarating the main event was... I think they were all watching a different fight.

I saw amateur hour at the local rec center, complete with gassing out in two minutes and headlock takedowns.
