Players Wearing the Wrong Uniform - Thread II
« on: June 25, 2015, 03:45:00 PM »
I know there's already a thread like this but it's full of broken links so im starting another one.

And I'm starting with this

Yes, that's Dr. J in a Hawks jersey.  After his rookie season with the Virginia Squires in the ABA, he was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks 12th overall in 1972, one year removed from a championship and already featuring Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson.  How's that sound for a big 3?

But he inexplicably signed with the Hawks instead, playing 3 exhibition games with them before a legal injunction forced him to return to the Squires.  The Hawks were fined $25K per appearance because the Bucks still owned his NBA rights.  Presumably the Nets assumed them upon the merger, because there's no other explanation on how the Bucks lost them.

Gretzky was traded to St. Louis on February 27th, 1995 and would play just 31 games (regular season + playoffs) and score 37 points. July 12th he signed with the New York Rangers.

Jerry Rice signed with the Broncos in 2005 and played the full preseason with them but elected to retire before the regular season started.

Ronnie Lott signed with the Chiefs in 1995 but broke his leg in the preseason causing him to miss the entire season and would shortly retire afterwards.

A's owner Charlie Finley sold Rolie Fingers and Joe Rudi to the Red Sox and Vida Blue to the Yankees on June 15, 1976 (trade deadline). Commissioner Bowie Khun invoked the "best interest of baseball" clause to block the deals so none of the players ended up playing for their new teams but the Red Sox were in Oakland when the deal happened so Fingers and Rudi did suit up for them and participated in pregame warm-ups but were never officially members of the team.

Lot of Red Sox like this in the years after the Curse ended in '04 (then after the Sox won again in '07) but Smoltz stands out.

It's fucking weird that a first ballot Hall of Famer has, not simply played for that many teams, but been traded as many times as Shaq. That's damned near fucking unprecedented; I mean, it's basically just him and Iverson, right?

Peter Forsberg played just 17 games with the Nashville Predators after being dealt from Philadelphia. His Flyers tenure could probably count too actually.

Jaromir Jagr is seemingly turning hiimself into Shaq or Grant Hill with his late push but his run with the Bruins, 11 games, particularly stands out as weird.

Andy Moog closed out his career with a single season for the Montreal Canadiens in 1997.

Paul Coffey spent just 20 games with the Hartford Whalers in 1996. He then played 10 games with Chicago in 1998 and finished his career in Boston in 2000 playing just 18 games.

More hockey fun...

Adam Oates as a DUCK in 2002! He still had 45 points in 67 games because he was so good even at that age.

Marc Habscheid with Calgary in 1991. More known for his Canada exploits but had a 54 point year with the Minnesota North Stars in 1988.

Kirk McLean with the New Jersey Devils. Played just 6 games early in his career in 1985 & 1986 over 2 seasons before being a key focal point of the Vancouver Canucks during the late 80's and 1990's.
