Awful TV edits
« on: December 30, 2015, 03:18:14 PM »
Tried searching for an existing thread but after about five minutes of searching didn't find an appropriate one.

I hate watching movies on TV not just due to cutting stuff for time but also just the random edits.

Tonight I was flipping channels after finishing all the shows on my DVR I was going to get into tonight when I landed on (500) Days of Summer.  I remember liking it six years ago when I saw it.

Had it on when I got really confused because JGL and Zoey were sitting in the park shouting PANDA.  I couldn't figure out what the hell they were feeling like they were being embarrassed shouting panda, when it hit me that in that scene they were yelling penis.

Well, at least TV did a good job fixing up the signature line of Snakes on a Plane

I'm all about the Weird Science edit of "She kicked him the nuts and called him faggot in front of everyone" to "She kicked him in the guts and called him braggart in front of everyone."

Friday the 13th VI: Jason Lives

Marvin the cemetery caretaker is encouraged to dig up Jason's grave to prove it's not really Jason in there. Marvin declares, "Dig him up, does he think I'm a fart head?"

TV Edit cuts out the term "Fart head."

This always amused me.

Goodfellas is one of my favorite movies. I can watch it any time it's on no matter what channel. I'll even watch it on AMC or any other commercial network. What those networks do to cut the film up is hilarious, though.

Saw a TV edit of one of Seth Rogen's movies where "asshole" became "casserole".

Mallrats has the funniest edits for me. Jay has the dirtiest dialogue, rather than dub over a word here and there they get a voice over guy to redo his entire line. So it's back and forth with a different voice.

The two that immediately come to mind. The second one isn't a bad idea so much as it's just an awful edit job.

Stand By Me had terrible edits that always annoyed me as a kid.  The scene where Chris and Gordie are talking about Gordie's writing while walking on the tracks and of course the end scene at the body are the worst

I remember watching Mallrats on TV once and finding it odd that they cropped a scene to, as far as I could tell, hide what brand of soda one of the characters was drinking.

Looks like I didn't make that up!
"A TV version mangles a great many scenes, editing all the language, drug references, most of the violence, and any product placement (the Diet Coke cup is cropped out, the references to Jaws and Universal are pulled, and some very awkward zooming is used on Ivana)."

"Lard! Lard! Lard!" being yelled in Gordy's story instead of Lardass always made me laugh.

RE: Mallrats cropping, Kevin Smith talks a lot about that in the commentary on the disk.

A couple that spring to mind for me:

Buzz from Home Alone when Kevin asks to sleep in his room:  "I wouldn't let you sleep in my room if you were growing on my BUTT [ass].

Fargo:  "No frozen [fucking] way, Jerry!"  "No Frozen Way" was a trivia team name for my friends and I for a few weeks.

Tremors, after Val and Earl outrun the first graboid and it kills itself by hitting a concrete wall. Val yells "fuck you," the TV edit has a voice that is ridiculously not Kevin Bacon yell "screw you" in the most hilarious manner possible.

In Do the Right Thing, when Radio Raheem asks the Asian couple for batteries, he says "10, mickey fickey!" To which the Asian man replies, "Mickey Fick You!"

Scarface.

Actual line: "Where'd you get that beautiful scar, tough guy? Eating pussy?"
TV edit: "Where'd you get that beautiful scar, tough guy? Eating pineapple?"

I was trying to find something to put on in the background on TV this morning and saw TNT was showing the first Austin Powers.  Editing stuff from the dialogue where the joke doesn't even make sense anymore.  I am not even sure what they changed Alotta Fagina's last name to, it sounded like Felina.

Later on when he sees Random Task carrying Dr. Evil's cat, the line about "I never forget a pussy... cat" became "I never forget a kitty... cat".  Which made Austin's awkward cover just odd.

So better follow up - they just got to the scene where Austin breaks into Alotta's Penthouse and they still display ALOTTA FAGINA'S PENTHOUSE on screen.  But I guess I was wrong in thinking the said Felina.  He just called her something like "Cleavage-eh"
