Yo dog, lets talk about RPGs
« on: March 04, 2017, 10:26:04 AM »
Just had a conversation with a friend of mine about our top 5 favorite rpgs. This was my list:

1) Planescape:Torment
2) Secrets of Evermore
3) Tales of Destiny
4) Breath of Fire 3
5) Earthbound

Apparenly not having FF7 on that list is blasphemy. But hey, you tell me yours!

Actually in the midst of a FFVI (FF3) playthrough on SNES right now. Still in World of Balance.

1. Secret of Mana
2. Final Fantasy VI
3. Suikoden II
4. Chrono Trigger
5. Breath of Fire II

I never got around to finishing FF7. Got close, but kinda stopped caring after that.
This list is subject to change based on my mood on any given day.

Then there's a whole lot of what really is an RPG, what isn't...

For me what comes down to an RPG is:
1) Customization of Character
2) Story-based gameplay
3) Immersion.

Some games have one or even two of these, but all three tend to be RPgs as we know it.

BTW Breath of Fire 2 is the only one in the series I've yet to play.

Maybe it's my age but nothing will ever touch Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, etc. I still enjoy the newer ones, but nothing matches those games + my built in 1990s nostalgia.
Show loose women what I'm workin' with.

I personally subscribe to the mentality that an RPG is any RPG that allows you to take up the role of a character and the journey they are on. Which I realize allows games like FIFA's story mode to qualify, but then again, it really is an RPG at that point. It is just the mechanics that get a game called "RPG" that most people think fit a typical RPG. The genre really isn't very "this is what it is" anymore.

Kinsey, I'd honestly say that BoF 2, even with its hilariously shitty translation (talking original version), is probably the best of the bunch. Also, I'm surprised that someone else loves Tales of Destiny a ton. Stahn and Rutee is probably one of my favorite couples in RPGs.

I'll post my list later on. I'll probably also post my list of most time devote to which RPGs, because the lists of my best and what I play most aren't exactly the same.

Not in order because ranking them would be like having to choose between my...something I really really like. Also limited it to one per franchise or it'd be even harder to get a top 5.

-Chrono Trigger
-Suikoden 2
-Link's Awakening
-Final Fantasy VIII (several other Final Fantasys could have this slot but I went with the one that hit me personally the hardest at the time I first played it. Teen angst RAAAAAAAAA)
-Crystalis
I want Jimmy Fallon to be dead. That doesn't make me a bad person.

So I'm thinking of buying a PS Vita to scratch my JRPG itch. Clearly, Persona 4 is at the top. Anyone got any other must haves?

Just played through Final Fantasy V & VI again and am currently working my way through Tales of the Abyss and Trails of Cold Steel again.

My top five:

1.  Suikoden II
2.  Persona 4 Golden
3.  Mass Effect 2
4.  Final Fantasy VI
5.  Chrono Trigger

Xenogears would have been easily on there if the game was finished, but that Disk 2...

If you haven't yet played Suikoden V, do so. It's just as good as II.

Suikoden V was a weird one for me.   It takes FOREVER to get going, and the general consensus was as long as you can power through that first 5+ hours of nothingness, then the game opens up and gets great.

....I powered through the opening just fine, and then as soon as it opened up that's when I lost interest.   I have no clue why that happened.

I bought it when it came out but was waiting until I finished IV and tactics. I did finally play IV a couple of years ago (spoiler: it sucks) so I just need to finally do tactics and I'll play V.

Honestly, it might be on the list, but I was reluctant to repeat franchises.  I don't think it is quite as good as II, in large part due to the slower start and weaker villains, but it is certainly up there with it.
