Bellator Fighting Championships: Round 1
« on: July 27, 2009, 08:29:14 AM »
This place has provided some of the most insane knockouts and submissions I've ever seen.   I need to share them with you guys.

Take this insane submission for example...

A lot of these were posted in the General Discussion thread, but Bellator is worth discussing. The first "season" went extremely well and they are going to get guys who want to go there. The tournament winners all pocketed $175,000, which outside of the UFC is practically bank robbery.

I think it has a future.

I know in the initial negotiations there was talk of a simulcast between ESPN deportes and ESPN.com  with the website providing commentary in English, and maybe even leading to an eventual broadcast on ESPN or ESPN 2, but not sure if that ever happened

A lot of people are wondering though if Dana White has something in the works w/ESPN because ESPN has not yet announced a second season of Bellator even though it was pretty successful on ESPN deportes.

When: First round of tournament action starts April 8th.

Fighters announced so far....

MW Tournament

Bryan Baker (11-1)
Matt Major (6-1)
Eric Schambari (11-1)

WW Tournament

Ben Askren (3-0)
Dan Hornbuckle (19-2)
Jim Wallhead (18-5)
Sean Pierson (9-4)
Steve Carl (12-1)
Jacob McClintock (6-0)

LW Tournament

Mike Ricci (5-0)
Ferid Kheder (16-5)
Carney Varnier (7-2)

FW Tournament

Patricio Freire (12-0)
Bao Quach (17-9-1)
Joe Warren (2-1)
William Romero (5-0)
Wilson Reis (9-1)
Georgi Kharakanyan (12-1)
Shad Lirely (5-2)

Non Tournament Bout's

Eddie Alvarez vs Josh Neer at a Catchweight of 160 will be on the May show.

Incredibly stoked at the way the tournaments have come together so far, notably FW which looks to be insane as far as prospects go. WW is good too with McClintock, Hornbuckle and Askren.

This might be a little too soon for Mike Ricci, but he eventually will impress some people on the big show within the next couple of years. He started training when I did (but was obviously a lot more serious about it) and the hard work is paying off. A legitimate prospect, though he hasn't been tested by the kinds of guys he'll be fighting in this tournament (not the ones announced so far, but I'm assuming the other names will be pretty big). Can't wait to see it. Only 23, too.

FW Brackets Announced

Joe Warren vs Eric Marriot
George Karakhanyan vs Bao Quach- Scheduled for the April 8th show

Wilson Reis vs Shad Lirely
Patricio Freire vs William Romero- Scheduled for the April 15th show

If Lirely can prevent Reis from completely smothering him he could make a fight out of it. Not liking Will's chances here but I shall be rooting for him regardless.

Much higher caliber of wrestler, plus innate gifts like a great chin, so there were high hopes. Unfortunately, he just doesn't seem to "get it" when it comes to submission grappling.

I heard Ricci got knocked out cold, makes me sad. He'll be back though, but that's a brutal loss for any young fighter to take. It just sucks because there was so much hype around him, and whether it was deserved or not it's gonna be shitty seeing the backlash, talking about how he sucks and nonsense like that. It's fighting, shit like this happens. I'm confident he'll bounce back though, he's got the right attitude.

The only thing I can think of is that the ref thought Thomas' neck might get wrecked so he stepped in but regardless, fucking horrible stoppage.

Also, Ricci KO is goddamn grimy. Hope he's ok.

Justice for Ryan Thomas as the Icelandic Ash Cloud of Doom has grounded UK's Jim Wallhead so Thomas will step in against Jacob McClintock.

By losing two rounds of the fight? You have a thing for guys who throw and miss a lot of punches, don't you?

Huerta's technically deficient, and always has been. The UFC was hoping that building him up in the way they did would help him out, but it never really did before he bolted. Add in the fact that he's a slow starter, and thus ALWAYS ends up having to fight back from a deficit, and you have a recipe for an upset.

Did anyone see the fight Warren lost? I saw the highlights and was really impressed with how the guy he fought was striking to defend the takedown. He looked really impressive. I just wanted overall impressions of the fight, and the potential of the guy.

SIIICK first round in Huerta/Alvarez.

Alvarez was just tooling Roger on the feet, then Huerta got the flash knockdown and went in for the kill on Eddie. They were just trading as the round ended.

Alvarez is kinda embarrassing him on the feet here but Roger again makes a game of it with 2 takedowns including a belly to back suplex.

Still think it's 20-18 Eddie after 2.
