THIAGO LET'S GO BRO

I think that the world needs more people like Holly Holm but she is far and away, without question the most undeserving title shot recipient in the history of the sport, male or female. She got a featherweight title shot after losing two in a row at BW, then somehow landed another featherweight title shot after dropping back down to bantamweight. Now she moves up in weight, beats Megan Anderson and is being rewarded with a bantamweight title shot.

Do.Not.Get.It.

Ketlen or De Ranadmie makes a lot more sense.  I really wish theyd have hyped the hell out of Nunes like she is the killer of killers and then build to this fight giving Holm a title eliminator that shed hopefully win.

Woodley/Lawler 2 next at ESPN 4 also.  I hate it.

De Randamie is never sniffing a title fight ever again after. I'd be everything I own on that.

My thought is that they are trying to milk as much as they can out of Holly before she calls it quits.  People still remember the Rousey KO and I feel like it (and the Silva leg break) are some of those "where were you when" moments in MMA.

Holly is such a weird case to study. She looked incredible prior to her UFC run then came in and had two incredibly mediocre performances to start. Got a title shot that nobody thought she had a shot in hell of winning and smoked Ronda who at the time was considered the GOAT of women's mma. Since then it's been a back and forth run of inconsistency with the occasional flashes of brilliance but I think if you were to make the argument that on the whole her UFC run has been a letdown.....well you might not be wrong.

She had a real opportunity there to be a new face in women's MMA (maybe not the face) as she was a lot more likable personality than Ronda but you're right, she did sort of squander that with several unimpressive performances following her big coming out moment.

With that said, she is probably the most recognizable athlete in Women's MMA behind only Ronda, Nunes, and Cyborg (although it's a pretty big gap between those three and her), even it was almost entirely based on one kick.

Taking the Meisha fight ended up being a killer.

I think a lot of her problems come with age.  She came in old.

IIRC the plan after Ronda lost was to do Holm/Rousey II at UFC 200 as the co-main event to Jones/Cormier II but when Ronda showed up on Ellen and looked like she had PTSD they proposed the Tate fight and Holly took it.

Why are you forgetting Meisha and Carano?

Currently the most recognizable.  As crazy as it sounds, Carano's peak popularity was nearly a decade ago.  Miesha hasn't fought in 2 and a half years.

Alexander Volkov been USADA'd, out of the Saint Petersburg main event against Overeem, Oleksiy Olynik steps in to take his place.

Yoel Romero is off the Florida card against Jacare, no replacement named as of right now.

also even though I've been a Masvidal diehard for a decade-plus now, I have to admit I'm not confident in him beating Askren. The way Maia took him down when he needed to, Askren has better takedowns and his striking defence is even better. If it was five rounds, it would be a different story, but three, fuck man.

Risky move for Stipe to sit as long as he did and trust that he'd get the shot if Brock didn't but looks like it paid off. I'm guessing if Cormier wins this he wants Jones at HW next.

Max vs Frankie at 240. This has gotta be Edgar’s last chance at gold.

The guy who has won 1 fight in two years is getting a title shot over Volkanovski.

Ali must seriously have the UFC by the balls if he's able to get Edgar a title shot.

Frankie’s my favorite fighter. So I’m not minding it. He’s won 3 out of 4 and 8 out of 10 (and I know that stretches quite some time).  Hopefully the winner doesn’t take much damage and Volkanovski can wait out a title shot. I know it’s not the right choice.

Volkanovski did get hospitalized with a virus after his fight with Aldo so maybe he wanted to take some extra time to recover from that?  But yeah, this isn't particularly a fight that I'm super looking forward to.

A possibly dubious main event in Canada? Blasphemy! Seriously though guessing the infection had something to do with this and Max maybe wanted to get back on the horse right away after the Poirier loss.

I know I'm counting out the dude you don't count out but I can't see how Frankie wins this. Even if you believe that the Ortega and Poirier fights have depleted Max's chin (which is possible) it's still a battle between two volume punchers with one of them having a significant advantage in power and reach not to mention size. I think Max beats him down like Ortega and finishes him in the 3rd or 4th.
