UFC 215: Nunes vs. Shevchenko
« on: September 07, 2017, 03:36:51 PM »
I'm not watching this because it's football season and there are so many other things I want to see (like the Chocolatito fight), but even if I was going to...

Quote
EDMONTON, Alberta -- Demetrious Johnson won't be breaking Anderson Silva's UFC title defense record this weekend after all.

In fact, he won't even get the opportunity to do so.

Ray Borg, Johnson's UFC 215 opponent, was forced to withdraw from the fight on Thursday evening due to illness, thus canceling Saturday night's main event, MMA Fighting has learned.

I can't fucking even dude HOW DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING.

This blows. Borg has missed weight twice before in the UFC. Wonder if it was a bad cut or if he wasn't going to make he weight and not risk losing a title shot. Just speculation.

I'd love for Nunes to give Dana a fuck you and pull out.

Make no mistake, booking DJ in a cursed province against a guy who's struggled to make weight was the UFC doing as much as possible without directly influencing the fight to ensure that Johnson wouldn't be able to fight. That's some evil villain shit and it worked.

Borg's camp says that this is illness related and has nothing to do with a bad weight cut. Guess somebody should inform them how easily susceptible the human body is to basic viruses and infections when you severely deplete it.

In regards to the main card Cejudo/Reis has been bumped, I haven't read which FP fight is on the prelims now.

Would have thought they'd bump Bhullar/Henrique to get Jinder Mahal some tv time as he's going to be in Arjan's corner.

I hope that the Singh brothers get to walk down the aisle as well.

As for all of these injuries and illnesses resulting in busted up cards, I feel like it would be wise for UFC to give fighters healthy stipends for training camps so that they don't hire underqualified bros that have them unfocused for three months.  I feel like a mixture of MMA evolving in 2017 mixed in with terrible pay of fighters, leads to less professional camps and canceled fights.

I believe that Borg had eight pounds to go one day before the weigh-in.  Is eight pounds out of 133 or so still a reasonable ask?

It's not unreasonable and hiring "underqualified bros" Borg was (key word) doing his nutrition with Perfecting Athletes which lists Joanna Violence, Chris Weidman and a ton more mma fighters as clients.

There are ways to stop this insane weight cutting. First is that all the weight classes need to be bumped ten pounds. Second is that fighters should be forced to do a check of their weight and have a weight limit on Wednesday.

If you think bumping up weight classes 10 pounds will stop weight cutting, you're very wrong. Weight cutting is apart of the sport, much like it is amateur wrestling.

where do they get these refs? Rick Glenn just beat the hell out of a guy for 3 full rounds that probably should have ended in the middle of the second.

That's why I said they need a Tuesday or Wednesday weight limit. There is a way to stop it.

The UFC makes enough money where they could send a team of people out to weigh the fighters a week before the fight if they really wanted to.

I really feel like Sara McMann has been one of the biggest busts of such a hyped prospect over the past few years.

I've landed in a shitty Buffalo Wild Wings for this card. The fights are on just a couple screens. Standard fed. And they won't pipe in the sound for the card. Just crappy dance music.

Stephens could have finished that fight a few times if he'd have let Gil stand back up. The ref could have stepped in for one of those later falls

Great win for RDA. I picked him to win. Didn't know it was going to be a quick domination.

It's not a good look for a guy like Neil Magny to get blown out on the feet by a great striker, and to get destroyed on the ground by BJJ black belts. I thought this guy was a great fighter but he should be much better at being able to impose his will on guys with certain strengths, and to not get run over.

I had it 48-47 Shev.  If the decision really came down to that takedown in the 5th? Eh......weak.

I gave Nunes the odd numbered rounds. But I really didn't care about the fight enough to really score it as well as a judge would have.

I thought Shev's slow start strategy might have done her in, even though I understand why that was the plan. It just seemed like Nunes slowed down a bunch after the 3rd round.  Shev also outstruck Nunes by over 20 strikes.  It might not sound significant, but in a fight that wasn't necessarily "action packed" it makes a big difference.

Cejudo looked awesome, but I can't give him a fighting chance against DJ until I see him utilize that advanced striking to hit takedowns in MMA. What's up with these olympic wrestlers who know how to strike not being able to consistently outwrestle fighters with no wrestling background? Bhullar, Cejudo, McMann, the list goes on. Makes what DC and Romero have done that much more impressive.

So where does Valentina's failed head and arm throw attempt lie in the pantheon of insanely stupid title fight decisions? Gotta be pretty high considering the judges probably gave Nunes R5 on the strength of control on the ground.

It was such a close fight that I'd say that there's a need to re-watch but the thing was, it wasn't that good of a fight so my urge to re-watch is minimal. I think we see Valentina be put into a #1 contender fight at 125 or be the first challenge for the divisions new champion unless Nunes loses the belt to whomever she fights next.

I think once women's flyweight get established you'll get Joanna move up and challenge there too. Shevchenko holds wins over her in Muay Thai fights and I'm sure that's a match UFC wants to book, both girls have said they want it too.
