UFC 216
« on: October 03, 2017, 01:11:12 AM »
This card is stacked from the Vannata fight on (except for the bout with two fighters who don't even have wikipedia pages, is that a TUF finale or something?)

Quote
Main Card
Weight class            Method   Round   Time   Notes
Lightweight   Tony Ferguson   vs.   Kevin Lee
Flyweight   Demetrious Johnson (c)   vs.   Ray Borg

Heavyweight   Fabrício Werdum   vs.   Derrick Lewis
Women's Flyweight   Mara Romero Borella   vs.   Kalindra Faria
Lightweight   Beneil Dariush   vs.   Evan Dunham

Preliminary Card (FXX)
Bantamweight   Tom Duquesnoy   vs.   Cody Stamann
Lightweight   Will Brooks   vs.   Nik Lentz
Lightweight   Bobby Green   vs.   Lando Vannata
Women's Strawweight   Pearl Gonzalez   vs.   Poliana Botelho

Preliminary Card (UFC Fight Pass)
Heavyweight   Walt Harris   vs.   Mark Godbeer
Flyweight   John Moraga   vs.   Magomed Bibulatov
Middleweight   Thales Leites   vs.   Brad Tavares
Flyweight   Matt Schnell   vs.   Marco Beltrán

I felt p. confident in Tony but he might just let this guy outwrestle him. But I can't take a guy who got KO'd by Leo Santos on the feet against someone like El Cucuy. I just hope Tony wins this and gets a big payday for his next fight. Kevin will get his eventually.

DJ vs. Borg will be another display of DJ's excellence, never a bad thing.

Werdum vs. Lewis is interesting considering Lewis's newfound dedication to training.

http://www.flocombat.com/article/62375-derrick-lewis-plans-to-punish-fabricio-werdum-he-made-me-miss-the-mcrib

Werdum hasn't finished guys post-USADA, this is a three-round fight so Lewis's cardio issues won't be as bad. A lot of people think he'll get run over but I give him a much better chance.

Dariush/Dunham will be a dogfight with the winner becoming a relevant spoiler in the division. They have the kinds of styles that could give any fighter problems.

Duquesnoy is an interesting prospect but his defence looked suspect. Fighting a guy who gets even odds is a good test.

Green/Vannata should be really good and will let us know if Lando is for real and if Bobby still has relevance in the UFC Lightweight division. Lentz/Brooks features two good grapplers fighting in what could be a stalemate or have some really fun exchanges.

This is one of the best cards the UFC has put on all year and it probably won't sell shit but I hope it somehow does for Tony's sake.

I think Werdum gets KO'd inside his guard. Can see him getting cocky and Black Beast drops a hammer on him.

I have bad memories of Lewis-Abdurakihmov & Werdum-Browne from 203, so I am worried of the shit show potential, but if Lewis knocks him out it may be a Top 3 moment for the year for me.

The FXX card I think looks great so that may get me behind this. I'm not as excited for this card as UFC 206, but I think it has the same potential for a card that outperforms what it looks like ahead of time.

Lewis is riding the good vibes he got from driving around and helping people out during Hurricane Harvey whereas Werdum has looked like complete shit since the Stipe loss, has the connection to Kadryov and topped that all of with his homophobic tangent last week. This is the easiest fight ever in terms of who to root for.

I'm p. confident in Tony. Even if Lee gets this to the ground, which Tony might give up in some crazy transition, I don't think he'll be able to finish him there or come close. But on the feet, Lee is really hittable and Tony is vicious.

Kevin has great back control and a sweet RNC, but I think Tony's 10th Planet JJ will save him from getting dominated on the ground.

Lee was getting lit up by Francisco Trinaldo. If he can't get this fight to the ground he's getting wrecked.

I watched four of his last five fights (not the Jake Matthews one), he literally got lit up by every one of those guys. He also only had one fighter hurt on the feet. Tony sometimes goes to war when he doesn't have to, but I think he should still win by TKO. Just avoid that high kick, and don't get thrown off by the jab.

Tony is a prideful guy, I can definitely see him wanting to send Lee a message as far as grappling goes so I think he keeps him hurt until his chance for a RNC or darce shows up and he chokes him out.

I really like Kevin's honesty and insights, and the fact that he is wearing an Adidas shirt. Still cheering for Tony but would be happy to see this real talker wear the belt too.

Kevin Lee made a "joke" about needing to cut 19 pounds last night, and there's only five minutes remaining in the weigh-in with him not having appeared.

Lee weighed in at the very last second, over the weight, and looked like absolute death. I'm sorry but I can't handle this stupid sport anymore. Every day before the show we don't even know if these fights are going to happen because these guys are cutting too much weight.

The commissioner gave him one hour to lose one more pound but this guy looked like he couldn't even take a shit without dying. This won't even be a competitive fight, Tony will kill him.

The weight classes should be moved up ten pounds and everyone currently fighting in them should be forced to fight ten pounds above. Enough with this shit.

Weight cut or not, I feel like Lee never stood a chance. He’s he ultimate benefactor of circumstance. Can anyone with a straight face say he deserves an (interim) title shot more than Gaethje, Alvarez. I know there are a bunch of guys out but the new WME model of forcing fake title fights. Is doing nothing for me or the growth of the sport.

I’ve been rewatching all of Lee’s fights. I’m a big fan, but he till kind of came out nowhere in the Chisea fight and I wondered why. Well, there’s a reason. He’s basic. Talented sure. But his style is more akin to what you’d see 2008-2013. Guy got lit up by Leanardo Santos less than 2 years ago. I imagine he loses this right and falls comfortably in the 7-12 rankings for the next few years.

Yeah. I feel like Kevin Lee may be the least known name to get involved in a UFC title fight, maybe ever? At least in the modern era. Nearly all of his fights have been on prelims. He's good, but it felt like they were trying to sell him as a star a while back when they were doing a presser for upcoming big fights... then for some reason had Lee and Chisea there.

He's trying to sell himself like a big deal all over the place in the last couple weeks. Really trying to work some Conor magic in interviews.

Looks like Walt Harris is stepping in to fight Werdum. And embarrassingly Mark Godbeer (Wal's original opponent) tweeted that his fight would be moved to the ppv. But he's being scrapped from the card entirely. Tweet has been deleted.

Super unprofessional to match these guys up, but the last minute excitement has an old school feel to it, and these guys probably got paid significantly more than they would have to take this fight. Good for them.

Not watching this, but I am refreshing the wiki entry, and it leads me to something that I've wondered about for a while: what does UFC do when they get to the main card, and a whole bunch of first round stoppages happen? Do they end the show up to an hour ahead of schedule, or do they do a whole lot of vamping?

Lee's striking improved a ton from his last fight.

Tony didn't look great and that chin up in the air is waiting for a guy like Conor to take him out but fuck it, he cleaned out the division and won the fights in the cage, he's the real best 155er in the world. Even if Conor beats him, I don't think he can beat all the guys that Tony did, and finish many like he did too.

Khabib is obviously too inactive to merit discussion.

DJ is the GOAT. I don't really care for other opinions, though I understand them. It's mostly nostalgia for a lost era. As far as what DJ can pull off in there and has accomplished at his peak, nobody else has come close. I'm sorry if I ever didn't give him the credit he deserved in those discussions.

The guy's top control is legendary, his ability to break down high level, durable opponents and finish them late is legendary, the way he can beat them at their own game is legendary, etc.
