Best of The Best 2017
« on: December 27, 2017, 02:51:02 AM »
Fighter of The Year: Mighty Mouse (apologies to Max Holloway who I originally picked)
Fight of The Year: Justin Gaethje vs Michael Johnson
Knockout of The Year: Ngannou decapitates Overeem
Sub of The Year: GSP sends Bisping to the Land of Wind and Ghosts
Upset of The Year: Thug Rose over Joanna

What's everybody else got?

Fighter: DJ
Fight: Yancy/Cowboy
KO: Ngannou/Reem
Sub: Ortega on Swanson
Upset: Thug Rose over Joanna
Debuting UFC Fighter: The direct heir to Frank Shamrock's cheekbones, Paulo Costa.
Performance of the Year: Frankie showing that he's still got it and smashing the Yair hype train.

Personal Letdown of The Year Award: Mirsad Bektic gasses out in the third and gets turnt by a guy in Darren Elkins who never finishes anybody in a fight where both the first and second round were 10-8's in his favour. Honorable mention to Misha Cirkunov who is great at being the hammer but absolutely dreadful at being the nail.

Yeah I was surprised at how easily Glover took his back and controlled him immediately after the takedown. Glover's grappling is good but I thought a guy like Misha would be able to provide a better defence. I understand it's MMA and there are punches involved but he made him look like a blue belt.

Yeah the Volkan knockout isn't too bad in hindsight but that dude straight up quit against Glover. I'd say the book on him being a great prospect at LHW is about three quarters of the way closed.

I have UFC 217 as Card of The Year. 214 is a close second but Maia/Woodley straight up killed the momentum it had.

Speaking of Woodley we can easily put the Maia fight and Wonderboy rematch in column of Worst Title Fights of The Year. Not a stat you want to have on your resume.

With Thompson and Maia, Woodley had back to back the two worst welterweight title fights ever IMO. So despite going 2-0 this year it wasn’t a great 2017 for him.

For somebody who comes off as pretty intelligent Woodley is incredibly ignorant as far as his marketability goes. You can't put on the performances he's had this year and then sit there and demand big money fights.

only if you're putting them as examples of what the worst title fights of the year like the Jones/DC debacle on the same card should have aspired to be aka THE BEST TITLE FIGHTS OF THE YEAR

217 was the best card of the year, maybe ever.

217 was great simply to see Joanna and Bisping get brutally shut down after they spent the entire pre-fight banter mercilessly trashing their opponent to the point of overkill, Joanna especially.

TJ/Cody doesn't get enough love either, one of the best sub-ten minute fights ever.

Fighter of The Year: Tyrone Woodley
Fight of The Year: T-Wood vs Wonderboy 2
Knockout of The Year: Tyson Woodley vs the fans enthusiasm after Wonderboy 2
Sub of The Year: The Chosen One vs the fans morale after an old one dimensional human backpack failed again
Upset of The Year: Boomerang takes out some jobber on convict's island

Non-Champion Fighter of The Year: RDA. Effortlessly dismantled three opponents in the Top 15 and wasn't even remotely ever in trouble in each fight.

Fighter: RDA. Sorry DJ but he didn't run through competition that was as good as RDA fought, in a brand new weight class.
Fight: Gaethje vs. Johnson or Gaethje vs. Alvarez. That dude will have a short life.
KO: Ngannou almost literally murdering Reem.
Sub: When that dude put the Walls of Jericho on someone.
Upset: Thug Rose over Joanna, but I saw that coming I guess so what I will say as far as not seeing it coming was Bektic vs. Elkins and not even close.
Debuting UFC Fighter: Marlon Moraes. I have to rewatch the Assuncao fight at some point.
Performance of the Year: Khabib last night.
Letdown of the Year: Jason Knight. Wtf son. Comes in there looking like a beast and resorts to biting someone prior to getting completely fucked up for the second time this year.

Magny and the Sponge aren't that good, and Lawler is over the hill now. I don't buy it.

Me neither. Tarec was outside of the Top 10 and Magny isn't that good, Reis and Borg were both Top 10 plus he set the title defense record. You can't give it to RDA over MM.

And while those guys aren't at the level of some of his previous opponents, the way he buzzed through them and dominated them in all aspects was incredible. Plus that finish of Borg....
