Meltzer called Gargano-Almas the best NXT match ever and said it was better than AJ-Cena last year which he gave 4.75.  So he may actually be giving a WWE match 5 stars.

that seems like a big exaggeration (it is meltzer though) even though I really liked it.

1/27/18- Young Bucks Vs Roppangi Vice 3k

Great psychology in this as the Bucks actually SELL like mother fuckers and the underdogs really have to work like motherfuckers against the vets.

I saw good stuff on that Bucks match, I just never catch Japanese stuff.

Agree on the possible over-rating.  I really liked that match last night but he flat-out said better than Bate-Dunne in Chicago which I liked better and his other top NXT matches, Neville-Zayn and Bayley-Sasha were ones I still rank high, though that may come from deeper personal investment.

Gargano/Almas was insanely good. The commentary was fantastic selling Gargano as another Daniel Bryan just trying to win to stick it in the face of everyone saying that he wasn't good enough and Johnny can just sell a beating tremendously well but also makes his comebacks look realistic and with perfect timing. I kinda wish that maybe Vega would have tried the DIY shirt thing again only to have Johnny just throw it away as a signifier that he was past it only to have the after-match be that much more impactful. I only wish he would have won to play off just how much that commentary was selling it like tonight just might be his big night. I could just hear the announcers echoing Cole after Foley's first win... "for all the people who said you couldn't do it."

Gargano/Almas was incredible.  That's the WWE MOTY.  I feel confident in saying that.  They won't top it.

I agree with Meltzer that Almas/Gargano was the best NXT match ever. He also said it was the best WWE match in several years. I agree with that too.

I can't think of a match outside of Japan that's had me on the edge of my seat like that since Cena/Punk in Chicago.
I watched RAW. I thought it sucked. The usual problems and such.

All in on Black/Cole. I can't imagine Gargano/Almas being better since neither guy is as talented as Black and Cole. Even the interference was perfect and added to the match!

EDIT: Okay, the opening moments with the chain wrestling has me hooked. Did somebody finally get in Gargano's ear and tell him how that stuff is supposed to work? The tease of the "headlock takedown to heasscissors and reverse" going into another sequence entirely was surprising.

EDIT 2: And they lose me when it becomes NJPW cosplay.

Maybe the real deep state was the friends we made along the way.

I definetly think all three of those guys mentioned are worlds better than Adam Cole, although I realize everyone has personal preferences. Black/Cole felt more like imitating a style to me than Gargano/Almas did.

I'm guessing the divide is more a style preference. I'll always love stiff and heated garbage brawls more than strong style and its derivatives.

Maybe the real deep state was the friends we made along the way.

2/10/18 Okada Vs SANADA

I love the match story of this so much. SANADA is to say the least a massive underdog. He has to wrestle the perfect match to even have a chance. SANADA has the dragon sleeper (SKULLEND) and the moonsault and Okada is as always looking to hit the Rainmaker.

2/7/18 Kzy Vs Mochizuki in Dragon Gate- You might need to know Kzy's history to truly get why it's a MOTYC instead of just a really good match but I think it deserves a shoutout. Kzy's growth from being a pretty shitty worker who just ran heel interference into a loved babyface who can hold his own with the best guys in the company has been totally insane. Someone needed to step up when Tozawa left though and he's done it.

1/2/18 Joe Doering Vs Zeus, AJPW- I'm starting to catch up on All Japan now. This was a Triple Crown defence for Doering. Doering has been on a pretty great run since coming back from a brain tumor and Zeus looks kinda like a mini japanese Batista. Zeus pulled out a ton of stuff you don't normally see from him in trying to hang with Doering (springboard crossbody~!) and actually was able to hang really well. Not the best of the year but deserves to be on the list.

I'll update the master list soon.

I heard Meltzer put that Takahashi-Ishimori match in his Top 10 matches EVER.  That good?  I liked the bits of Ishimori I saw in Impact but don't know a ton.  Just curious now that DA MELTZ put in the greatest EVER conversation.

1/6 Pro Wrestling NOAH: Kenou Vs Kaito Kiyomiya

NOAH had a big problem when Misawa died, Kobashi/Taue/Morishima/Rikio all retired, and Akiyama and his guys all left (and later KENTA). They had no main eventers left aside from Marufuji and Sugiura and a not terribly over Taniguchi. They filled this gap mostly by bringing in Suzuki-gun as well as signing Katsuhiko Nakajima and a number of former Osaka Pro guys, as well as stepping up their dojo.

NOAH actually did something unimaginable in Misawa's time, they started pushing young talent. Kiyomiya is 21 and Kenoh is 33 (and he started in MPRO, a dirty INDY). Kenoh has been getting a mega push the last year, moving up to the heavy division, winning the tag belts twice, the big singles tourny, then defeating Eddie Edwards for the GHC title (Meltzer loved that match but it was last year).

NOAH isn't doing great finanically/drawing but I actually find it more interesting to watch than it has been since 2005 probably. Kenoh, Kiyomiya, Masa Kitomiya, Atsushi Kotoge, Katsuhiko Nakajima (a long time fave), and several juniors are highlights. Most of these guys are also pretty young.

I did a big writeup because NOAH gets ignored now generally.

Also even if you feel like the MOTY is already a total LOCK please keep adding matches you think are great because this also is intended to help people find stuff to watch. If it's something that would be a MOTYC in another year or is something that's really noteworthy (in a positive sense!) I think it's worth adding.

If we are including those (which I agree, were great matches) we should probably add the Dunn/MM vs Era six man from night one too. That's the trilogy of greatness there.

Hoping this airs this week on the NESN feed of CWFH. They have been airing old episodes lately though (last one was the final week of build to the big card they were going to start airing the next week presumably)...I might have to start watching on FITE instead.

Scorpio Sky (c) vs Ray Rosas for the United Wrestling Network TV Title on Championship Wrestling from Hollywood (can be found on the Fite app). Phenomenal match.

Hoping this airs this week on the NESN feed of CWFH. They have been airing old episodes lately though (last one was the final week of build to the big card they were going to start airing the next week presumably)...I might have to start watching on FITE instead.

I get NESN, but there's a local channel that shows it here in NY on Sunday early mornings. I tweeted it out and Tagged Scorpio, and he was upset that it wasn't on the Fite app yet since he hadn't watched it at that point. CWFH said they fixed it and it's up now.

5/29 Marufuji Vs Takashi Sugiura

Two old dawgs square off for NOAH's top belt. A couple nasty bumps and a lot of stiffness put this in the top tier of NOAH stuff I've seen this year.
